The Yardbird's Godfrey Townsend is Living a Rock 'n Roll Wet Dream Fourth time IS the charm. After way too many reschedulings, as with all things, this conversation with the Yardbirds' Godfrey Townsend happened exactly when it was intended. Lightning doesn't strike the same spot twice, and this was an electric circus of talk and music perfection. From jumping in at the opening with The Who's Won't Get Fooled Again, to Godfrey's masterpiece of Jeff Beck's, Cause We've Ended as Lovers, from Blow by Blow, which cracked my heart open and left me with goosebumps, in tears… to every single moment in between, this was heaven. I've fostered my share of conversations that have blown my mind; this is amongst the best of the best. For a girl whose moniker was RockGirl back in the day when Godfrey and I met decades ago, this conversation was truly a Rock 'N Roll wet dream. Godfrey not only shares stories with Jack Bruce, John Entwistle, Alan Parsons, Mark Farner, Dave Mason, Joey Molland, Todd Rundgren, Howard Kaylan, The Cowsills, Chuck Negron, The Association, Mark Volman… he's played with them all! And his stories and intimate experiences with them left me breathless. And then there's meeting Clapton, his divine private audience with Pete Townshend, his adorable Jimmy Page encounter and impression, meeting Beck! Has any rockin' stone been left unturned? Dammit, I didn't even ask about Mick and Keith! Next time. And there will be a next time. For the two hours of this, I trust there are so many more unmined gems. If rock's your thing, if you lived through the 60s till now, or just dig the music, Do Not Pass Go, Do Not Collect $200… hit the play button and hunker down for a wild, fun, and wonderful ride. An inside view from an insider. Consider this the audiobook of Godfrey's sure-to-come bestselling rock memoir. Hachachacha! LOVED IT!

If you want to know exactly when the 1960s British Blues explosion caught fire, look no further than this 1966 landmark. Fresh off his departure from The Yardbirds, a young Eric Clapton teamed up with blues purist John Mayall to record what is widely considered the most influential guitar album of the decade. This week, the Random Album Generator gives us the legendary "Beano Album," the record that officially launched the "Clapton is God" era.Inside This Episode:Side A Reaction: We are splitting this 12-track blues masterclass right down the middle. If you're spinning this with us, hit pause after track six, "Double Crossing Time." Jeremy and Jon react to that massive, aggressive guitar tone that changed rock music overnight and John Mayall's steady, authentic leadership.5 Fast Facts: We uncover the story behind Clapton reading a comic book on the album cover, the exact amplifier combination that defined rock and roll, and the tragic mystery of the stolen "Beano Burst" guitar.Side B & Final Thoughts: We flip to Side B and discuss Clapton's vocal debut, the ferocious instrumental "Steppin' Out," and how this one album essentially laid the groundwork for Cream, Led Zeppelin, and heavy metal. The Verdict & Standout Tracks: Jeremy and Jon lock in their 3 essential tracks. Does this iconic blues record hold up against the test of time, or is it strictly for guitar nerds?Join the Polyphonic Press Community: Love collecting classic vinyl or have a definitive pressing of Stand! you want to talk about? Let's go crazy! This week's pick is "Psychotic Reaction" originally by The Count Five - a song which has to be in the Top 10 of all-time garage toonz ... a Yardbirds-style rave-up with great drums & atmospheric harmonica wails. Two versions, also from 1966, follow hot on the caped ones' heels - Texans Positively Thirteen O'Clock (who are actually Mouse & The Traps under a different name) and budget-rockers The Fire Escape. Labelmate Brenton Wood jumped on the song in '67 and reveals the secret original ending that the Counts ditched for their single. Television played the song live in Cleveland in '75 and they make quite a racket, but then Shockabilly's 1982 version add a ruckus to their racket! Take a ride!

From the vaults! Another long lost, but not forgotten, modcast of a bygone era. Enjoy. Welcome to Mr. Suave's Mod Mod World, modcast #131 if you can believe it. I don't know about you, but I've got the blues. The legendary queen of the blues Koko Taylor died a little more than a week ago, and that sparked me to dig out and revisit some my old blues, esepcially the British blues of the sixties, the early R&B. London's blues scene in the late 50s and early sixties spawned a number of bands and musicians that went on to great fame, many with very mod sounds - Rolling Stones, Georgie Fame, Them, the Animals, the Yardbirds and so on . And No doubt Ms. Koko Taylor was an inspiration to sixties mods who were blending the blues with rock, and jazz with soul, and creating radically new sorts of sounds. So, now it's time to get some mod blues. Remember, you can get all things mod over at the modcast homepage at www.mistersuave.com.

Goose vs. Geese | The Battle of the Waterfowl! In this episode of Derringer Discoveries, we are officially “winging it” as we dive into the avian-obsessed world of rock and roll. Join Paul, Laura, Alton, and our newly minted co-host, Rob Derringer, as we settle a debate over two of the most talked-about bands in the current scene: Connecticut's jam-band kings, Goose, and Brooklyn's post-punk provocateurs, Geese. In This Episode, We Discuss: The "Apex Predators" of Bird Bands: We look at the industry's obsession with our feathered friends, from The Eagles and The Black Crowes to The Yardbirds, The Byrds, and Wings. We break down two very different modern rock stories: Geese, the Brooklyn post‑punk critical darlings who exploded after an SNL appearance and now boast millions of monthly listeners; and Goose, the Connecticut‑born jam‑band phenomenon whose marathon live shows and festival breakout turned them into a touring powerhouse. Geese – The Post-Punk Anarchists: How a group of friends from Stuyvesant High School went from a basement studio called “The Nest” to a bidding war over their demos. The fallout from their polarizing Saturday Night Live performance that split the internet between "rock saviors" and "derivative impostors". Their meteoric rise to over 2 million monthly listeners and critical acclaim for albums like 3D Country and Getting Killed. Goose – The Indie-Groove Torchbearers: The band's "Big Bang" moment at the 2019 Peach Music Festival that transformed them into a national sensation overnight. Why they are considered the new leaders of the jam-band scene, blending the spirit of the Grateful Dead and Phish with a Vampire Weekend sensibility. Their impressive resume of sold-out shows at Madison Square Garden and Red Rocks.  The Final Vote The team steps off the fence to choose their winner in the Battle of the Waterfowl. In his new book B-Sides: A Flipsided History of Pop (Headpress, 2023), Andy Cowan explores a century of music b-sides. Pop music would be a different beast without the B-Side. Music history is riven with songs deemed throwaway that revolted against their lowly status and refused to be denied. Be it rock'n'roll's national anthem ('Rock Around The Clock'), disco's enduring game-changer ('I Feel Love') or hip-hop's most notorious dis track ('Hit 'Em Up'), all three started life as the so-called 'lesser' track on releases primed for maximum chart impact. But the B-side has done much more than make stars of Bill Haley, Donna Summer and 2Pac. Whether it was the Beatles, the Kinks and the Yardbirds in the 60s, Elton John, the Who and Queen in the 70s, Depeche Mode, the Cure and Prince in the 80s, or Oasis, Pulp and Radiohead in the 90s, the B-side allowed many of the world's greatest artists freedom to experiment with no commercial constraints in an age where physical product ruled the roost. A quickfire A-Z of 500+ flips, B-SIDE is the first serious examination of the format's covert role in pushing the musical envelope. Best read with one eye on YouTube and one ear on a streaming service, its revelations will prick up the ears of music fans of all persuasions. Send us a textTonight we turn to a musician whose name has become shorthand for guitar mastery, blues devotion, and, depending on who you ask, the very idea of the rock “guitar hero.”Eric Clapton. For some listeners, he is the ultimate guitarist: the Yardbirds prodigy, the “Clapton Is God” graffiti on London walls, the molten solos with Cream, the aching beauty of “Layla” and “Tears in Heaven,” the tasteful bends and vocal-like phrasing that defined what an electric guitar could say.For others, his legacy is more complicated—shaped not only by brilliance, but by band breakups, addictions, controversies, and changing times.Today I want to trace how a quiet, art-school kid obsessed with American blues records became one of the most influential guitarists in history, move through the bands that forged his sound, and look at how his work helped define what “great guitar playing” means for generations of musicians.Eric Patrick Clapton was born March 30, 1945, in Ripley, Surrey, England. Raised believing his grandparents were his parents and his mother was his older sister, he grew up with a complicated sense of identity and a strong inwardness that would later surface in his playing — that mix of control, melancholy, and sudden intensity. Support the showThank you for experiencing Celebrate Creativity.

ANNE LEIGHTON RETURNS (WITH MORE ROCK LEGENDS) She's back! After an incredible conversation in Episode 90, newly minted "Honorary Derringer" Anne Leighton rejoins Team Derringer at the table for Part 2. As a veteran music publicist, artist representative, poet, and public speaker, Anne (of Leighton Media, Music Services, Motivation) has championed some of the most respected names in music. In this episode, Anne pulls the curtain back even further, sharing insights and personal stories about three more artists from her rock and roll stable... including the namesake of this very podcast! IN THIS EPISODE, YOU'LL HEAR: Rick Derringer: The Namesake | We finally do it. We're talking about the man himself, the namesake for Team Derringer, the legendary Rick Derringer. While Anne didn't formally publicize Rick, she shares her notable personal connection to the rock icon who gave us "Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo." We trace his career from the #1 hit "Hang On Sloopy" with The McCoys to his production work for Edgar Winter ("Frankenstein") and even "Weird Al" Yankovic's Grammy-winning hits. Renaissance: The Annie Haslam Era | Next, Anne discusses the symphonic-rock legends Renaissance. We clarify the connection to the original Yardbirds-era lineup (featuring Jim McCarty) and dive into the iconic version of the band fronted by the ethereal vocals of Annie Haslam. Anne shares her work with the group responsible for prog-rock classic "Carpet of the Sun." Joe Deninzon & Stratospheerius: The Future of Prog | To cap it off, Anne introduces us to an artist who has been called "The Jimi Hendrix of the electric violin." Joe Deninzon is a force of nature who leads the progressive rock quartet Stratospheerius. We discuss his incredible journey, which has recently led him to his biggest gig yet: joining the legendary rock band Kansas as their new violinist, bringing his energy to timeless classics like "Carry on Wayward Son" and "Dust in the Wind." This week, we talk about the bizarre, the unusual and unsettling, the creepy and uncharacteristic… And what really makes it terrifying and disturbing is that these are true stories… Be prepared to be shocked! These are Rocktastrophes: true tragedies that occurred in the real world of rock n' punk n' metal. What is it we do here at InObscuria? Every show, Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection, an artist, album, or collection of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. Robert is forced to test his endurance and provide feedback, as he has no idea what he will be subjected to every week. Our hope is that we turn you on to something that was lost on your ears, or something you've simply forgotten about, or that (in our opinion) should have been the next big shocking thing.Songs this week include:For Squirrels – “Superstar” from Example (1995)The Gits – “It All Dies Away” from Frenching The Bully (1992)Death Angel – “Stagnant” from Act III (1990)Reagan Youth – “Heavy Metal Shuffle” from A Collection Of Pop Classics (1994)The Exploding Hearts – “Still Crazy” from Guitar Romantic (2021)The Yellow Dogs – “Until The Night Was Done” from Upper Class Complexity (2012) Armegeddon – “Brother Ego” from Armegeddon (1975)Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/https://x.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it: InObscuria StoreIf you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/Check out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/

Brad Zerbo and Jaytriot dive headfirst into the 1960s British Invasion, tracing how the Beatles' 1964 debut on The Ed Sullivan Show sparked a cultural explosion. They explore how the mop-top Beatles injected post-JFK-assassination America with joy and charisma, setting the stage for a flood of UK acts. From the Stones' bluesy swagger and the Who's proto-punk chaos to the Kinks' distorted riffs and the Zombies' haunting grooves, the hosts highlight how British bands reshaped American music while borrowing from U.S. blues and R&B. They dig into stories of staged hysteria, covers that outshone originals, and fights that got the Kinks banned from touring America. Along the way, they spin tracks from the Animals, Manfred Mann, the Yardbirds, and the Spencer Davis Group, tying it all to the seismic shifts in rock history. With personal anecdotes, humor, and even a nod to the “Paul is dead” rabbit hole, this episode captures how the British Invasion forever altered music, culture, and youth identity.

We at The Wolf are excited to present our 250th episode of UAWIL and want to take a moment to thank all our loyal listeners & social media followers. Building this show and the community of fellow rock fans has been such a fun and sometimes magical adventure around the world these past 5 years. We want to express our sincere thanks for coming on the journey with us. Also, we like to do big guests on our 50th shows - Ryan Condal EP of House of the Dragon Ep 50, Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets live (after welcoming Gary Kemp and Guy Pratt on earlier to promote the show) Ep 100, Steve Kilbey of The Church Ep 150 and Steve Howe of Yes Ep 200. And we are proud to welcome one of rock music's most celebrated and contracted cover artists, Hugh Syme. Hugh is best known for his work with Rush over 50 years as their first collaboration, Caress of Steel, is 50 this year. We learned from Hugh first hand how his original piece of art was given the sepia tone at print which we all know and the songs which inspired the front and back covers. We hear about working with Neil Peart, Bob Ezrin, David Coverdale, Jimmy Page and the many models he immortalized with iconic album covers. Hugh is also an accomplished musician in his own right and talks about recording with Rush, working with former guest of UAWIL Jim McCarty of The Yardbirds and jamming with Aerosmith. We found Hugh to be soft spoken yet wryly funny as he related tales of living in London as a teenager, working as a musician in Toronto, and the 80s and 90s living in LA when it was the heart of the music business. And for you Rush fans, listen until the end as he announces he just submitted his artwork for an upcoming Rush anniversary reissue of one of our favorite 1980's Rush records. We had a delightful conversation with Hugh and we hope you enjoy it. Thanks again for all the support these 250 episodes - it means the world to us. Can we make it to 1,000??? Time will tell but if you keep listening and telling us what you want to hear about, we'll keep making them. Thank you all!!
