Adam and Bernie Clark delve into the complexities of hip health, particularly in relation to yoga practice. They discuss the anatomy of the hip, common causes of pain, and the implications of conditions like impingement and arthritis. Bernie clarifies misconceptions about yoga causing hip replacements, emphasizing that flexion and internal rotation are not inherently harmful. The conversation also covers advancements in hip replacement surgery, recovery expectations, and the importance of individualized care in rehabilitation. www.yinyoga.com | @bernieclark7528 The book trilogy: https://yinyoga.com/ybyyt/ Stuart McGill's website: https://www.backfitpro.com/about-us/ https://www.elephantjournal.com/2014/01/playing-the-fear-of-god-card-in-yoga/ https://www.elephantjournal.com/2014/01/playing-the-fear-of-god-card-in-yoga/#comments Listen on Podcast Apple podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/keen-on-yoga-podcast/id1509303411 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/5iM9lcw52JskHUZ2eFvVxN Watch Episodes on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@keenonyoga Support Keen on Yoga: Subscribe, like and share our videos Buy us a coffee: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/infoRf Patrons €10 per month: https://www.keenonyoga.com/patrons/ Follow Adam Website: www.keenonyoga.com Instagram: @keen_on_yoga | @adam_keen_ashtanga Key Notes · Yoga does not cause hip replacements; correlation does not equal causation. · Flexion is not the problem; it's the combination with internal rotation that can lead to issues. · Understanding hip anatomy is crucial for addressing pain and injuries. · Recovery from hip replacement surgery is generally quick and effective with modern techniques. · Individual anatomy varies greatly; what works for one person may not work for another. · Impingement can be a natural part of movement; it's the excessive strain that causes problems. · Yoga can be therapeutic for conditions like avascular necrosis if practiced mindfully. · It's important to listen to your body and avoid pushing beyond your limits in yoga. · Consulting multiple healthcare professionals can provide a broader perspective on treatment options. · Gentle movements and maintaining joint health are key post-surgery.

It' in the sign of Virgo as we are in Virgo season. Virgo energy is ruled by Earth, and Virgo season ushers in a period of transition as we move from summer to fall and feel our energy settle and refine. This period gives us a foundation to rest upon as we process the events of the past and future. It allows us to organize our lives after the chaotic burst of energy Leo Season often brings. Virgo Season brings us an opportunity to show up as that person and realize our inherent self-worth. It is a time to let go of self-doubt, perfectionism, and self-criticism as we step into our potential in this lifetime. Virgo's energy helps us embrace our authentic self realized in Leo Season while accepting it with compassion, forgiveness, and strength. As we journey through Virgo Season, become aware of the conditions you place on yourself for love and acceptance. What impossible level of perfectionism are you holding yourself to and why? We often feel that we have to be perfect to receive love and be worthy. Over this season, began to teach yourself that you are worthy of love, acceptance, and fulfilled dreams just as you are right now. This New Moon sets your intentions by embracing all aspects of yourself this season. Purge your consciousness of unworthiness at the beginning of Virgo Season by making a list of all the reasons why you don't believe you deserve love, belonging, acceptance, or fulfilled dreams. Write unrestricted and break free of the bonds of shame that keep you tied to a life of self-doubt. What don't you feel you are good enough for? What in your past or present is preventing you from owning your magic and declaring your worth to the Universe? Come join us at Ritual + Shelter for a new Moon Light labyight meditation.. BERNIE CLARK – YOGA RELATED INJURIES (www.yinyoga.com | @bernieclark7528In this episode, Bernie Clark discusses knee issues in Ashtanga yoga. He explains the anatomy of the knee joint and the role of ligaments in preventing excessive movement. Bernie shares his personal experience with knee injuries and the different approaches to healing, including surgery and non-surgical methods. (more below) Bernie emphasizes the importance of strengthening the knee muscles and finding a balance between flexibility and stability. Bernie also addresses the idea of symmetry in yoga practice and the need for individualized approaches based on each person's unique body. This conversation explores the topics of symmetry vs. balance, the cultural protocol of crossing legs, hip structure and range of motion, hip pain and lotus position, hip issues and solutions, understanding pain and discomfort, the impact on personal practice, carrying angles and individual differences, and recognising pain vs. discomfort. Key Points · Hyperextension of the knee is a natural movement and is not necessarily harmful. · Meniscus tears are more common than ACL ruptures in yoga. · The knee joint does not have a good blood supply, which makes healing difficult. · Strengthening the muscles around the knee can help support the joint and prevent injuries. · Asymmetry is natural in the body, and it is more important to focus on functionality rather than achieving perfect symmetry in yoga practice. Seek balance, not symmetry, in your practice. · Individual differences in hip structure and range of motion can affect poses like lotus position. · Various factors, including overuse and structural differences can cause hip pain. · Understanding the difference between pain and discomfort is important for practising safely. · Personalise your practice based on your body's capabilities and limitations. Bernie Clark - Does yoga cause hip replacements? (yinyoga.com @bernieclark7528) No pain no gain? | Practice and all is not coming | Your Body Your Yoga | Rubber hip | What is available for all? | Meniscus tears | Tensile resistance v compression Getting a few more degrees rotation | Cultural differences | What stops me? | Self-selecting | Nobody is average | What is fascia? | Mobility v stability | Your body's energetic shape | Does yoga cause hip replacements? Bernie Clark has been teaching yoga and meditation since 1998. He has a bachelor's degree in science from the University of Waterloo and combines his intense interest in yoga with an understanding of the scientific approach to investigating the nature of things. His ongoing studies have taken him deeply inside mythology, comparative religions and psychology. All of these avenues of exploration have clarified his understanding of the ancient Eastern practices of yoga and meditation. His teaching, workshops and books have helped many students broaden their own understanding of health, life and the source of true joy. Bernie's yoga practice encompasses the hard, yang-styles, such as Ashtanga and Power Yoga, and the softer, yin-styles, as exemplified in Yin Yoga. His meditation experience goes back to the early 80's when he first began exploring Zen meditation. During those days, while he struggled with the conflict between practice and theory, Bernie also worked as a member of the executive team of one of Canada's oldest and largest Hi-Technology companies. Bernie is the author of Your Body, Your Yoga amongst others.
This week I am interviewing Addie deHilster. Addie is a mindful movement teacher whose teaching prioritizes mindfulness from the Vipassana tradition. She blends many styles of movement including Yoga, somatics and chi gong to facilitate embodiment. We discuss how Yin yoga in many ways is already a very accessible form of meditation. I know this discussion will inspire you to turn the things you are already doing in your Yin practice into your own mindfulness practice.Addie deHilster is a Mindfulness Meditation Teacher and C-IAYT Yoga Therapist. I had the good fortune to start my yoga journey in earnest, only a few kilometers from the home studio of yin yoga pioneer, Bernie Clark. This meant that very early on, only a year or so after I started teaching, I completed a 50 HR Yin Yoga training with Bernie. Alongside the depth of wisdom Bernie brings to his teaching of yin yoga & human variation, I learned the value of applying critical thinking & the scientific method to my endeavors in yoga.In today’s episode, Bernie helps me explore these concepts more deeply. At a time when we’re digesting more information than ever, critical thinking becomes even more important. It’s my hope that in this conversation, you feel inspired to question everything and keep an open mind, while not being afraid to change your opinions when presented with new evidence.PODCAST HIGHLIGHTSA definition of critical thinkingHow we can apply critical thinking to yogaHow to apply the scientific method to yogaHow to evaluate researchThe four levels of evidenceWhy Bernie has revised his use of the words “plastic” and “elastic” to describe the yin and yang tissues of the bodyTips to help your students avoid overstretching in both your yin & yang classesFIND BERNIE CLARKBernie’s FacebookBernie’s WebsiteFIND CORACora’s InstagramCora’s WebsiteFor links & resources mentioned in this episode go to www.corageroux.com/episode54Support the show (https://www.corageroux.com/theteachersclub)

Continuing the conversation on how Yin Yoga affects the physical body, Jen and Sarah Jane talk about the physical benefits of the practice, immediately zeroing in on the elephant in the room: the edge. What is it? Why is it important? Is it safe to spend time there? How might we describe it to students so they can safely encounter it, so they can find their sweet spot?In the course of this discussion Jen coins a phrase: ujayii bypassing. If you don’t immediately have an idea what that might be, you might be doing it, and missing out on an important aspect of yin yoga asana practice: feeling. No discussion of yin yoga would be complete without delving into sensation and the practitioner's attitude or relationship to it. And what about pain? Is it possible for a practice to help us redefine or diminish it? Jen thinks Gate Control Theory may be at play in the way in which yin yoga asana minimizes her back pain. Sarah Jane muses whether yin yoga could have made her stronger. (More likely it improved her proprioception.)Finally, Jen and Sarah Jane wend their way toward the healing effects of embodiment practices on trauma and body image, and how well suited yin yoga poses are to this work.Resources“Not Too Much and Not Too Little,” an article in which Bernie Clark explains the “Goldilocks position” “Gate Control Theory and the Brain,” a recent article on Very Well Mind The Neurobiology of Pain and Yoga as its Medicine an article on helping students reframe their relationship to painful sensation using internal methods and asana.Enhancing Proprioception and Interoception in Yoga, Jen offers some practical advice for yin and yang teachers.Overcome Trauma with Yoga (video) from Bessel van der Kolk on KripaluVideo“How Yoga Helps Heal Trauma: A Q&A with Bessel van der Kolk” on Kripalu.orgCenter for Trauma Embodiment and Trauma of the Justice Resource Institute is the epicenter of trauma-sensitive yoga and yoga teacher trainingPaper from David Emerson et al. that codified principles of trauma-sensitive yoga, which Sarah Jane incorporates into her yin yoga instruction“Yoga, Body Image, and Self-Acceptance: A Review of Yoga & Body Image” in Yoga International by Jennifer MattsonBody Positive Yoga with Amber KarnesDianne Bondy Yoga is For Everybody

Bernie Clark has been traveling the yogic path for over 40 years, starting with a daily meditation practice that he established in his mid-twenties, in order to deal with growing stress. In his early forties, he was introduced into the physical practices of Hatha yoga, which assisted him greatly in his meditation practice. Throughout his first career in high-tech business, he continued to feed an intense curiosity about psychology, mythology, anatomy and philosophy. Today, Bernie is a yoga teacher and published author offering classes, teacher trainings, and workshops in Vancouver, Canada. In this episode, you’ll hear from Bernie on: [14.03] The definition of Yin Yoga. Bernie explains that yin and yang are relative terms and that nothing is either completely yin or completely yang. However, more muscular and dynamic forms of yoga, such as Ashtanga and Vinyasa Flow, are generally considered more yang-like and Yin Yoga is a slower-paced practice where postures are held for a longer period. [19.50] The concept of eustress - a beneficial form of stress which has a positive effect on health. Bernie aims for balance in his Yin Yoga practice and cautions against causing the body distress by pushing it too far or allowing it to weaken and the muscles to atrophy through lack of effective exercise. [22.25] Bernie elaborates on the hypothesis of anti-fragility; the idea that humans gain from chaos and grow stronger under a certain amount of stress. He emphasizes the importance of identifying the edge, the point at which we experience resistance but not pain, in developing a challenging but safe yoga practice. [32.56] Advice for teachers. Bernie recommends resisting commenting on medical conditions and favours a functional rather than an aesthetic approach to asanas, focussing on how students feel rather than how they look in a pose. [48.35] Bernie challenges the commonly held belief that ligaments and tendons should not be stretched. He explains that Yin Yoga works the deeper connective tissues of the body, including ligaments and tendons, and that long-held static stresses can help to strengthen the connective tissues and make them healthier. Preserving hope in the face of racism has been both challenging and elusive for Native Americans due to historical trauma from government policies of genocide, annihilation, termination, and relocation -- yet this is precisely the message that Fr. Maurice Henry Sands brings to Native American communities across the country. Fr. Sands is the Executive Director of the Black and Indian Mission Office in Washington, D.C., a priest of the Archdiocese of Detroit, and a member of the Ojibway, Ottawa and Potawatomi tribes, who are known together as Anishnaabe. He delivered this year's annual Rev. Bernie Clark, C.S.C. Lecture on Catholic Social Tradition, titled "Act Justly: Healing Racism through Faith." He joined us on the podcast to discuss racism against Native Americans from historical, personal, and theological perspectives.
The thoughtful and articulate Bernie Clark joins us on the show this week! Bernie is perhaps best known for his influential Yin yoga teachings as well as his books, The Complete Guide to Yin Yoga, and Your Body, Your Yoga. When Jason and I shared our thoughts about Yin Yoga at the end of season 1 (episode 147), we hadn't expected it to be so polarizing. After seeing Bernie's response to the episode in one of his forums and after listening to you, our listeners, we asked him on the show.We covered a lot of ground in this episode: Bernie clarified Yin's origin story, he shared how Yin benefits him personally (and how he complements it with strength-training), as well as how he guides (even flexible students like Andrea) to discern their edge in poses. The big takeaway from the conversation? We landed on more points of agreement than points of difference. The one point of difference that remains is whether or not lengthening ligaments is a good idea. And if you'd like to research that further, check out the show notes.SHOUT-OUT TO OUR SPONSORSOhmme is a company that makes yoga and activewear clothing for men. The fit and function is phenomenal. In this conversation, Bernie and Kathryn get into some hot topics that are being discussed in the yoga community: stretching vs. stressing the body, how to teach yoga when considering human variability, hypermobility and thoughts on the spine. The conversation begins with Bernie talking about yin yoga and the difference between stretching and stressing the body’s tissues. He talks about how this practice can stress the deeper layers of the body, which is beneficial to the health of our tissues. Kathryn and Bernie discuss how to effectively teach yoga knowing that there is so much human variability and that ‘looking good does not necessarily mean you are being healthy’ in your movements. Bernie also talks about whether or not people that are hypermobile should do yin yoga. Finally, they chat about the spine and how certain yoga cues such as “neutral spine” or “lengthen your spine” may be unhelpful and confusing. Listen in as Dr. Michele interviews fellow Yin Yogi Michael Banks, and hear two yin yogis discuss why yin yoga is our favorite. Both Michael and Dr. Michele have been trained as RYT 200 yoga teachers with extensive training in Yin Yoga Levels I and II as well as Restorative Yoga Levels I and II. Michael believes every body is a yoga body, and if you can breathe, you can practice yoga! His focus is more health-based than performance-based, with an emphasis on alignment and anatomy. He uses props to assist with alignment and to help individuals better understand their own bodies. His goal is to create a space where individuals, regardless of mobility or physical challenges, can grow and heal from the inside out. Michael received his teacher training at the TheraYoga Studio in Montrose, CA, with Samantha (Sam) Joseph-Akers and Addie de Hilster. The training was based on Modern Hatha Yoga, which encompasses the physical asana practice and is the umbrella term for most styles of yoga practiced in the West. Sam and Addie developed the TheraYoga Method, whose lineage descends from the practice of T. Krishnamachary, who could be considered the father of modern yoga. Krishnamachary also practiced Ayurvedic medicine and combined this science with yoga in his therapeutic approach. Sam was taught by Kelly Wood, who was taught by Gurmukh Kalsa, who was in the direct lineage with Yogi Bhajan, Judith Lasater, Leeann Carey, Doug Keller and George Haas. Addie was taught by Bernie Clark, Leeann Carey, Paul Grilley (who was key in the development of Yin Yoga) and Sarah Powers, who coined the name “Yin”. Show Notes: 1. Show Notes: Join Dr. Michele as she interviews Bernie Clark on all aspects of yin yoga and yoga anatomy. Bernie has been traveling the yogic path for over 35 years, starting with a daily meditation practice that he established in his mid-twenties in order to deal with stress in his business career. In his early forties, he was introduced into the physical practices of yoga through Hatha yoga, which assisted him greatly in his meditation practice. He has a degree in physics and spent 30 years as a senior executive in the high tech, space industry, but he also continued to feed his intense curiosity about psychology, mythology, anatomy and philosophy, which culminated in his writing several books about yoga, mythology and anatomy. Today, Bernie is a yoga teacher and edutainer, offering teacher trainings and workshops in Vancouver, Canada. He continues to write books and maintain his website YinYoga.com. Bernie Clark is one of the world's leading trainers of Yin Yoga and the author a several books - The Complete Guide to Yin Yoga and most recently Your Body - Your Yoga. We discuss Bernie's transition from working in a fast-paced corporate company to teaching yoga relatively late in life. He shares his wisdom of Yin yoga and meditation, how to teach students to practice according to their own body, and the skillful means in which teachers can facilitate this. Topics Covered on today's show: As a yin yogi myself, I’ve read your books and followed your career for a while now so this interview is very special to me. Thank you again for agreeing to come on the show. Can we hear your STORY of how you came to love yin yoga and transition into a yin yoga career. For the listeners who don’t know what the difference is between yin yoga and other forms of yoga such as vinyasa or even restorative, can you tell us a little bit about the differences? Here are two things you may not know about me yet: Although I am a foot and ankle surgeon and Ayurvedic health coach, I majored in anatomy and physiology at UCB. So anatomy is one of my favorite things to talk about. I’m a student and more recently an assistant teacher of Joe Barnett, who is a senior student of Paul Grilley, and in their teachings and trainings we discuss anatomy for hours. So I would love to have a discussion with you about anatomy and why it’s so important in the study of yoga, both in yoga teacher trainings and in regular classes at yoga studios…because I think we have all been instructed by teachers that our foot isn’t in “perfect alignment” etc. Another thing that we have in common is that we both really found yoga in our early 40’s so I think we should talk a little about why yoga really is for every one, every body type, and all ages. I often hear things like “I can’t do yoga, I’m not flexible enough.” Can you speak on that a little and tell us how you respond when a potential student says that to you. Maybe we can touch on the “fuzz” or the connective tissue or fascia here as well and why this is so important for people to understand. Can you tell us about your latest book “Your Body, Your Yoga” and why a book like this is so important, especially for yoga teachers? Can you tell us a little about your personal yoga practice, what times of day do you find it most beneficial for a yang practice vs a yin practice? And does it matter that much? Do you recommend it for others or do recommend people do what feels best for their body? I would love to take a training or at least a class with you someday. If I make it up to Vancouver, I will definitely sign up! For others who want to train with you or take a class, can you let them know where to find you? And also let us know WHAT IS NEXT for Bernie Clark? Your new book or anything else we can look forward to? Notable Bernie Clark Quotes: “God doesn’t keep a list of who can do a deep forward fold.” – Bernie Clark “…that’s what we’re trying to in yoga, just become healthy- not super flexible.” – Bernie Clark "In a yang pose, we engage the muscles and stretch them. In the yin practice, we relax the muscles; we aim our intention into the joints and the deep tissues wrapping them, not the more superficial tissues of the muscles or skin." – Bernie Clark Books Written by Bernie Clark: The Complete Guide to Yin Yoga Your Body, Your Yoga YinSights From the Gita to the Grail ---------------------------------------------------------------- Contact Information and Important Links for Bernie Clark: Here's Where You Find Bernie: url -www.yinyoga.com Contact Information and Important Links for Dr. Michele: This episode was brought to you by the Body Wisdom 10 Week Coaching Program.
