Email in 2021 “...Being stuck in Stockholm with limited resources (a 2012 MacBook Pro, Apollo Twin, one Gefell mic, a couple of electric guitars, a mandola, a keyboard controller, and a short scale Gretsch bass that my son bought when was twelve) afforded me the time and motivation to make my first solo album in almost twenty years. Drums were cut by my drummer in Philadelphia (challenging considering his total lack of engineering experience, but I made it work), and by my other drummer in Slovenia (recorded by a producer/engineer genius in an amazing studio). The Covid-19 pandemic and quarantines of 2020 caused disruptions in the music industry that we're still feeling a few years later. But while we're fortunate that the lack of live music will fade into memory, the releases of quarantine albums may very well add up to an interesting reflection of these unprecedented times. With no opportunities to tour and limits on how and when musicians could gather to write and record songs, many artists created and recorded music in isolation. Or collaborated remotely to produce new music. One of those projects was Johnny Lied, a collaboration between two longtime friends. Jon Herchert, a veteran Minnesota musician and accomplished producer John Fields used their time in 2020 to reimagine classic albums. Their second effort was a full rearrangement and recording of Billy Joel's The Nylon Curtain. The song-by-song remake stripped down Billy's most meticulously-orchestrated album and built it back with entirely new instrumentation and perspective. The duo released a song a week with accompanying videos on YouTube. As the last track hit the internet, we sat down with Herchert and Fields to learn about why they chose this album, how they recorded separately from each other, and how they see the album as relevant to the world today. Along the way, we also talked about the state of the music industry today and got a glimpse of the Midwest rock scene. Join us as we dig deep into a unique reimagining of The Nylon Curtain. Jim and Mike Interview KELLY OGDEN from the Punk Band THE DOLLYROTS! Jim has been a fan of the band since 2007 when they released their cover of "brand new key". We had a lot of fun talking to Kelly about the new album (Down the Rabbit Hole), her acting debut on CSI, playing with Bowling for Soup, being signed to blackheart records, traveling with kids, Rabbits, Todd Rundgren on a train ... and more! *********** ABOUT THE DOLLYROTS: The Dollyrots are a Los Angeles, California based pop punk band made up of Kelly Ogden (vocals/bass) and Luis Cabezas (guitar/vocals). Since their formation 18 years ago the husband and wife duo has played over a thousand shows in the US and Europe, shared the stage with many of their idols, and released six studio albums along with several EPs, singles, splits, and a live concert film. Their last 3 albums have peaked in the Top 20 of the Billboard Heatseeker's chart, earning heavy rotation on Sirius/XM radio and followed releases on Lookout Records & Joan Jett's Blackheart Records. What started as a hobby for New College of Florida students (and childhood friends) Kelly Ogden (bass/vocals) and Luis Cabezas (guitar) became a career when Ogden and Cabezas decided to make their band, The Dollyrots, a full-time gig in 2001. The duo set off on a road trip to find a new home for the group and settled in Los Angeles in 2002; once there, the pair set about honing a pop-punk sound inspired by the Ramones, the Pixies, the Sex Pistols, Nirvana, and Green Day. Two years later, the band signed with Lookout!/Panic Button Records and released Eat My Heart Out. Following release of their debut the band appeared onscreen on CSI:NY performing two songs off the album. While playing the Vans Warped Tour in 2006 the band members met Joan Jett, who was so taken by the Dollyrots that she offered them a spot on her Blackheart Records label roster after hearing demos of their upcoming LP. The Dollyrots' second album Because I'm Awesome debuted on Blackheart in 2007. The album spawned several singles that made an impact on radio and appeared on film/TV (Easy A, Brave, The Vampire Diaries, Greek, Reaper.) A year later they recorded a version of Jett's song “Bad Reputation” for the soundtrack to the film Endless Bummer, followed up three years later with the slickly produced A Little Messed Up. The first single off this effort, “California Beach Boy”, was featured with a live performance by the band on The Price Is Right. The Dollyrots left Blackheart after that, releasing an EP on their own Arrested Youth label. For their next project, the group turned to crowd-funding site Kickstarter, launching a wildly successful campaign that yielded 2012's The Dollyrots. Working again with co-producer John Fields, the independently released set featured Ogden and Cabezas firmly in charge for the first time in their career as they played all the instruments (save for a few parts done by producer Fields) and had final say over all facets of the process. By this point the Dollyrots had gone through a number of different drummers and generally operated as duo with guest musicians in the studio and on their various tours. Their 2014 release, Barefoot and Pregnant, was recorded during Ogden's pregnancy and was subsequently followed by the birth of the couple's first child. The album fared well critically and reached number seven on Billboard's Heatseekers chart. The all-acoustic Love Songs, Werewolves, and Zombies was released digitally in 2013 to the band's PledgeMusic supporters, and received a public release the following year. The Dollyrots continued to successfully fund their projects via crowd-funding and in 2016, they released their first concert album, the ambitious, double-disc/DVD set Family Vacation: Live in Los Angeles. That same year also saw the release of the three-song EP Mama's Gonna Knock You Out. The end of the year saw them working on two new projects, another kid and their next album. The couple's baby girl was born in November and the John Fields-produced Whiplash Splash was released in early 2017. This was followed by a 7-inch single Get Radical, released on Little Steven Van Zandt's Wicked Cool Records. The band most recently released their album of B-Sides, Rarities and Covers entitled "DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE" Be sure to visit their website at : www.thedollyrots.com for a ton of cool, unique items (we mention some in the interview) Jim and Mike Talk Music can be found on Podbean (host site), Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Iheart Radio, Pandora and almost anywhere you listen to podcasts. We had the pleasure of interviewing Ryan and Pony over Zoom video! Ryan And Pony is a brand-new project from two indie-rockers who have been kicking around the much-vaunted Minneapolis music scene for years. Their debut album Moshi Moshi was recorded at a variety of Minneapolis studios including Flight Simulator, Flowers, Master Mix, and The Kill Room with Ryan producing. John Fields mixed and Greg Reierson mastered the album. Moshi Moshi is available on 12” blue vinyl LP, CD, digital download, and streaming services through Chicago’s Pravda Records. Ryan is a workaholic multi-instrumentalist who has been playing lead guitar in Soul Asylum since 2016. Pony is a flamboyant performer and artist raised by deaf parents. Together they have made numerous albums and toured internationally leading The Melismatics. On Moshi Moshi they fuse Dream-Pop, post-Punk, Brit-rock, EDM, and good ol' fashioned Rock ‘n’ Roll into a sound all their own; irony, weirdness, and melody are at its heart. Peter Anderson (The Ocean Blue, Run Westy Run, The Honeydogs) adds his killer drum skills to the mix.Ryan Smith and Pony (AKA Kathie Hixon-Smith) first met touring the U.S. in a minivan as indie-rocker Mark Mallman’s back-up band. Both Ryan’s newly launched group The Melismatics and Pony’s band Hundred Flowers started making waves in the Minneapolis scene. Before long, they joined creative forces and Pony became co-front person in The Melismatics. The Melismatics went on to release seven studio albums and several singles, play Lollapalooza, have their music used in numerous TV shows, tour internationally, and build a devoted fanbase. They also shared the stage with the likes of MGMT, The Von Bondies, Joan Jett, Plain White Tees, Shiny Toy Guns, The Jayhawks, and Soul Asylum. After the Melismatics released their most recent album Rising Tide in 2013, the group started to slow down their rigorous touring schedule. With this break in the action, the idea for a new project took shape and Ryan and Pony began working on new material. The first track to come into fruition was “First Night,” a weirdly relevant song about rebirth. The duo continued recording songs for their debut album and playing local shows…Then Soul Asylum called. Ryan joined the legendary alternative rock group as their new lead guitarist and in 2016 and became very busy touring and recording. Soul Asylum released a new album in 2020, Hurry Up And Wait which quickly became their third highest charting album to date. After that album was in the can, Ryan was able to focus on putting the finishing touches on “Moshi Moshi” and finally turning it in to Pravda – now here it comes! We want to hear from you! Not only is Marshall Charloff a singer and songwriter, he is a celebrated producer and recording artist. Having worked with and recorded for acts such as Little Anthony (Little Anthony and the Imperials) and multi-platinum-selling-grammy- award-winning band, The Commodores, Marshall’s writing and producing skills paved the way for the creation of Marshmallow Fields: a 1990s production team consisting of Marshall working with Steven “Funkytown” Greenberg (musician/record producer/production/ owner of October Records) and John Fields (musician/record producer/production/The Jonas Brothers/Miley Cyrus/Switchfoot/Goo Goo Dolls/Pink/Backstreet Boys/ etc.). Marshall has also been inducted in to the “Mid America Music Hall Of Fame” as a member of the Minneapolis band, Westside. Over the course of time, Marshall has teamed up with the famous jazz man Marcus Anderson (New Power Generation/3rd Eye) to perform with the North Carolina Symphony Orchestra and he has recorded with Prince on the album “94 East”. Marshall has even teamed up with “Doctor Fink” from “Prince and the Revolution”, along with Pepe Willie from the band 94 East, to perform at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame events. Currently, Marshall fronts The Purple Xperience, a band cited as one of the greatest tribute bands to Prince and performs to a dedicated audience backed by world-class symphonies in most major cities worldwide. “What if” we told you that in the middle of this crazy schedule that he has also put out his own music? Dianna caught up with Marshall Charloff this past Saturday (March 9th) during Radio Memphis Around the World before he heads out for a European tour this week to talk about his experiences as a writer and a producer? Marshall even discusses his take on where the music industry is today and shares some of his own original tracks, including a previously unreleased collaboration with one of Prince's family members. Did you miss their conversation? Listen now, right here.
John Fields was a normal kid growing up in a normal family in the Boston suburbs, in prime position to take over his father’s hosiery business. Instead, he moved to Minneapolis straight after high school to hang out with his uncle Steve Greenberg, whose hit “Funkytown” had been a huge international success. Fields quickly became his uncle’s right hand man, learning the ropes as an engineer, producer, and bass spanker. His band Greazy Meal was a mainstay on the Minneapolis scene in the 1990s, and his early record production work earned him a reputation as an enthusiastic, creative and very fast collaborator. Eventually he moved to Los Angeles where he worked with some of the biggest names in pop, r&b and rock music, including Pink, Jonas Brothers, Switchfoot, Demi Lovato, Miley Cyrus, Semisonic, Selena Gomez, and a whole lot more. In 2016 he moved his operation back to Minneapolis and set up shop in the legendary Creation Audio studios building, where he had interned years earlier as a teenager. John continues to do work from the west coast, but more and more he’s celebrating and elevating the music from his adopted hometown. Lately, for example, he’s been working with Cory Wong, the guitarist for Vulfpeck. We got together in his studio earlier this year to talk about working fast, the importance of the second verse, why the artist is often right, how he finds work, what it means to write pop music today, why he has such big downbeats and if the first thought really is the best thought. John says, “I just try to be stoked.” As you will hear, he definitely succeeds. Thanks for listening. ALANNAH MCCREADY recently released her debut EP Love Hangover produced by award-winning Nashville publisher Dan Hodges and renowned Los Angeles based producer John Fields. Alannah began singing, appropriately, in cowboy boots and hat. But it wasn’t in Nashville, at the Ryman Auditorium. It was north of Minneapolis in the ex-urban flatlands of Blaine, Minnesota where she stood atop the back of a corduroy couch in 1991 as a four year old, in a ninja turtle costume and ice skates and announced the beginning of her singing career. In 2010, she graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison but not before winning two National Division 1 Championships as a goalie for the Badgers. She lived in NYC for a few years after college, working in the sports marketing world, until she fatefully heard Nashville beckoning. So while music has a big part of her heart, hockey has a special place in it too “Hockey has been a part of my entire family growing up and it brought me to a million different places. My brother and I were always around it, often spending summers training in Toronto and flying every which way for games. I think almost every person on the McCready side has strapped on the skates at least a hundred times in their lives. It’s the Scandinavian blood.”
The Dollyrots, comprised of Kelly Ogden (bass/vocals), Luis Cabezas (guitar) and Alicia Warrington (drums), was originally founded by childhood friends Ogden and Cabezas in their native Florida. The pair decided to move to Los Angeles in 2002 and have recently seen the addition of drummer Warrington. The band has released three full length albums (Eat My Heart Out, Because I’m Awesome, and A Little Messed Up) and several singles and EPs through the Lookout, Blackheart, and Brando record labels. In addition, The Dollyrots’ music has earned them song placements, commercials, and acting stints in television shows including Hewlett-Packard, Kohls, CSI:NY, ABC Family’s Greek, Ugly Betty, Vampire Diaries, The Price is Right, Easy A, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2, Reaper, and Bring It On: Fight to the Finish, among others. The trio has logged hundreds of thousands of miles in the U.S. touring consistently since 2003 while cultivating a rabidly loyal fan base. Over the past 10 years, The Dollyrots have worked with a number of well-known producers including John Fields (Andrew WK, Pink), Chris Testa (Jimmy Eat World, Dixie Chicks), Matt Wallace (Maroon 5, Faith No More), Sylvia Massy (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Tool), and Neal H. Pogue (Outkast, Travis Barker.) The past year has seen the three-piece touring across the North America both headlining and alongside bands such as Bowling For Soup, Buzzcocks, and The Go-Gos. In 2010 The Dollyrots toured the UK & Ireland with Bowling For Soup and Forever the Sickest Kids, playing to sold out crowds and expanding their fan base overseas. For The Dollyrots, 2012 is gearing up to be their best year yet as they are currently putting the finishing touches on their fourth full length album independently and with John Fields, producer of “Eat My Heart Out” and “Because I’m Awesome.” The album is in large part being funded by fans through a Kickstarter crowdsourcing project that has thus far doubled initial fundraising expectations. Coming off a strong year of touring and recording the band is anxious to expand their horizons and build on what they’ve accomplished with a new album supported by their fans.
