EP57: Age-Friendly Ecosystems with Terry Fulmer, PhD, RN, FAAN

Age-Friendly Ecosystems "It's a blessing to be an older adult." -Melissa Batchelor, PhD, RN, FNP-BC, FGSA, FAAN For decades, advocates have called for communities, neighborhoods, and organizations like hospitals to become more "age-friendly." Although the idea of an age-friendly society has been promoted both locally and internationally, adoption remains more aspirational than an organized practice.  In this week's episode of This Is Getting Old, Dr. Terry Fulmer and Amy Berman walk us through an overview of what it means to have created an Age-Friendly Ecosystem.  Part One of 'The Age-friendly Ecosystems'. The John A. Hartford Foundation has been working with the Age-Friendly Foundation to convene leaders of these age-friendly movements. The goal is to help make the "age-friendly" moniker clear to all stakeholders in terms of what it means.  At the George Washington University’s Center for Aging, Health and Humanities, we have adapted the Age-Friendly Ecosystem to include Arts & Creativity.’ What Exactly Is an Age-friendly Ecosystem?  An Age-Friendly Ecosystem refers to the collective of all efforts to adapt society to meet older adults' needs. In simpler terms, Age-Friendly Ecosystems are the comprehensive, collectively built, and ever-expanding platform whose goal is to improve older adults' quality of life through enhanced, collective impact.  Moreover, understanding the Age-Friendly Ecosystem draws on the social-ecological model that acknowledges the connections and interplay between older adults and their environments or contexts. Proponents of the Age-friendly Ecosystem Movement The Age-Friendly Ecosystem is a movement to create age-friendly cities and communities started by the World Health Organization and carried forward by AARP (American Association of Retired Persons).  The John A. Hartford Foundation (JAHF) launched the Age-Friendly Health Systems movement with the Institute for Healthcare Improvement in 2017 to ensure the specific needs of older adults are met in health care. JAHF in 2018 then collaborated with the Trust for America's Health (TFAH) to involve public health agencies to expand the implementation of the age-friendly guidelines to the public health domain, acknowledging that these programs, notwithstanding their goals, have remained constrained and siloed. Many other organizations are advancing initiatives to make universities and businesses age-friendly.  The Goals and Objectives of Age-Friendly Ecosystems The goal of Age-Friendly Ecosystems has been to help make the "age-friendly" moniker clear to all stakeholders regarding what it means and how it should be adapted.   The work is leading to developing a common language and shared metrics so that anyone can recognize it and know what should be expected when we say "age-friendly." By working together across silos, different age-friendly initiatives can maximize their collective impact.  "An Age-Friendly Ecosystem refers to the collective efforts to adapt society to meet older adults' needs worldwide." -Terry Fulmer, PhD, RN, FAAN Guiding Principles and Frameworks of Age-friendly Ecosystems Each of the age-friendly initiatives has its guiding principles and frameworks. A big part of our effort is to help us understand those frameworks and what the shared characteristics are across them. The 4Ms Framework  An Age-Friendly Health System reliably delivers evidence-based care that reduces harm and focuses on What Matters most to older adults and their families. It is based on what we call the 4Ms Framework – essential elements of care that need to be addressed for all older adults – What Matters, Medication, Mentation, and Mobility. The 5Cs Framework The Age-Friendly Public Health Systems movement uses the 5Cs Framework:  Connecting and convening sectors and professions  Coordinating existing supports and services  Collecting data to assess community health status  Conducting, communicating, and disseminating research findings and best practices  Complementing and supplementing existing supports and services,  These frameworks are specific to the sector, clinical or public health in these examples but undergirding all of these frameworks are commonalities that lead us to the characteristics of an Age-Friendly Ecosystem. Part Two of 'The Age-friendly Ecosystems'. Characteristics of Age-friendly Ecosystems The convenings of leaders in the Age-Friendly Ecosystem, in addition to surveys of older adults, literature reviews, and expert interviews, have led to an understanding that several characteristics represent an age-friendly ecosystem. Understanding these characteristics helps us get to common language and metrics.  A forthcoming journal article will explain these characteristics and their definitions.  Age-Friendly Ecosystems: Current Standing in Terms of the Needed Common Language and Metrics  Since the fall of 2020, the Age-Friendly Foundation has been drafting a measurement taxonomy. They did that by identifying six outcome measurement domains that represent dimensions of age-friendliness. The domains are groups of similar outcomes, while the outcomes are explanatory concepts that can be inferred from measured or observed data. The Foundation is also looking at indicators or ways of measuring desired outcomes. They've looked at all the different frameworks outcomes and indicators – the Age-Friendly Health Systems, the Age-Friendly Public Health, WHO Age-Friendly Cities, AARP Livable Communities, Age-Friendly CAFÉ (Employers), and Age-Friendly Universities Principles— to supplement work in the health and public health frameworks.  Furthermore, the Foundation reviewed CDCs Healthy People 2030 indicators for Healthy Aging and Access to Care and the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials Policy Statement on Aging to expand and quantify outcomes related to health well-being. They've started with specific outcomes, such as Mobility, Walkability, Access to Jobs, and Labor Force Engagement. For each outcome, they identified indicators (or measures) recommended by IHI, CDC, WHO, and so on.  In some cases, they've added indicators where there were gaps based on a review of the literature. All of these are still in draft stages, and there is more to come. "Everyone has a role to play in eradicating ageism." -Terry Fulmer, PhD, RN, FAAN. How To Do Your Part In Building The Age-friendly Ecosystem? Everyone is encouraged to implement age-friendly programs, which will also  help us counter ageism and help all of us age with dignity and respect. In whatever sector you are in, reach out across to other partners. Start by checking out the blog on MelissaBPhD.com. You can find linked additional resources for age-friendly initiatives such as the Age-friendly Health Systems, Age-friendly Universities, and many more.   You can also join in the existing age-friendly initiatives, for example, the Age-Friendly Health Systems movement, by going to ihi.org/agefriendly. Or visit Trust for America's Health or our johnahartford.org website for more information on how to join the Age-Friendly Public Health Systems initiative, which has a new website: https://afphs.org/. "We've seen great success in this with public health working with aging services, working with health systems. This all connects to a crucial issue and call to action - everyone has a role in eradicating ageism, which is discrimination based on age. This means calling it out when you see and hear it. It requires you to make sure you aren't contributing to ageist perceptions of older adults." says Dr. Terry Fulmer, a nationally and internationally recognized leading expert in geriatrics.  “Older adults rightfully want and deserve dignity and respect.” Amy Berman, RN, LHD, FAAN About Terry Fulmer, PhD, RN, FAAN: Terry Fulmer, PhD, RN, FAAN, is the President of The John A. Hartford Foundation in New York City, a foundation dedicated to improving older adults' care. She serves as the chief strategist for the Foundation, and her vision for better care of older adults is catalyzing the Age-Friendly Health Systems social movement. Dr. Fulmer is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine and recently served on the independent Coronavirus Commission for Safety and Quality in Nursing Homes to advise the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. She completed a Brookdale National Fellowship, and she is the first nurse to have served on the American Geriatrics Society board. The first nurse to have served as President of the Gerontological Society of America, which awarded her the 2019 Donald P. Kent Award for exemplifying the highest standards for professional leadership in the field of aging. About Amy Berman, RN, LHD, FAAN: Amy Berman is a Senior Program Officer with The John A. Hartford Foundation. She works on the Foundation's development and dissemination of innovative, cost-effective care models that improve health outcomes for older adults. Among these efforts, Dr. Berman is responsible for the Foundation's work to advance Age-Friendly Health Systems, led by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, in partnership with the American Hospital Association and the Catholic Health Association.  She also leads many of the Foundation's efforts focused on Serious Illness and End of Life, including efforts to support Diane Meier's palliative care and the Center to Advance Palliative Care.

Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs: - 644 (in 'The Appearances of the Risen One') - Even when faced with the reality of the risen Jesus the disciples are still doubtful, so impossible did the thing seem: they thought they were seeing a ghost. "In their joy they were still disbelieving and still wondering."...Therefore the hypothesis that the Resurrection was produced by the apostles' faith (or credulity) will not hold up. On the contrary their faith in the Resurrection was born, under the action of divine grace, from their direct experience of the reality of the risen Jesus. - 645 (in 'The Condition of Christ's Risen Humanity') - By means of touch and the sharing of a meal, the risen Jesus establishes direct contact with his disciples. He invites them in this way to recognize that he is not a ghost and above all to verify that the risen body in which he appears to them is the same body that had been tortured and crucified, for it still bears the traces of his Passion. Yet at the same time this authentic, real body possesses the new properties of a glorious body: not limited by space and time but able to be present how and when he wills; for Christ's humanity can no longer be confined to earth, and belongs henceforth only to the Father's divine realm. For this reason too the risen Jesus enjoys the sovereign freedom of appearing as he wishes: in the guise of a gardener or in other forms familiar to his disciples, precisely to awaken their faith. - 999 (in 'How do the dead rise?') - How? Christ is raised with his own body: "See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself"; but he did not return to an earthly life. So, in him, "all of them will rise again with their own bodies which they now bear," but Christ "will change our lowly body to be like his glorious body," into a "spiritual body." (abbreviated). - 652 (in 'The Meaning and Saving Significance of the Resurrection') - Christ's Resurrection is the fulfilment of the promises both of the Old Testament and of Jesus himself during his earthly life. The phrase "in accordance with the Scriptures" indicates that Christ's Resurrection fulfilled these predictions. - 112 (in 'The Holy Spirit, interpreter of Scripture') - Be especially attentive "to the content and unity of the whole Scripture". Different as the books which compose it may be, Scripture is a unity by reason of the unity of God's plan, of which Christ Jesus is the center and heart, open since his Passover. - 108 (in 'The Inspiration and Truth of Sacred Scripture') - If the Scriptures are not to remain a dead letter, Christ, the eternal Word of the living God, must, through the Holy Spirit, "open (our) minds to understand the Scriptures." (abbreviated). - 2763 (in 'The Summary of the Whole Gospel') - All the Scriptures - the Law, the Prophets, and the Psalms - are fulfilled in Christ. The Gospel is this "Good News" (abbreviated). - 2625 (in 'The Age of the Church') - - 601 (in 'He died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures') - 981 (in 'The Power of the Keys') - 1120 (in 'The Sacraments of the Church') - 1122 (in 'The Sacraments of Faith') - 1304 (in 'Confirmation') Got a Bible question? In Autumn 2018, Clanton published her essay ‘The Age of Ignorance is Over’ in Media Entertainment & Arts Alliance Equity Magazine. It issues a wake-up call to those in positions of authority to lift the cloak of invisibility from artists of colour and afford them the same opportunities as their white cohort. This week The Movie Breakdown is coming at you with four reviews of very different movies. Speaking of different, we look at a Martin Scorsese movie that some may say goes against his reputation with the film adaptation of the Edith Wharton novel about upper class life in 1870s New York, The Age of Innocence. I also argue in the review that it actually is very much a Scorsese movie while also showing his wide range of talents and skill by tackling different subject material as well. Another director with a reputation is Olivier Megaton and we review his latest action picture, The Last Days of American Crime. We also have a slice of life 1950s period piece sci-if thriller -- yes, you read that right and no, I can't think of another movie from this specific newly created genre but here is The Vast of the Night. I need to mention that this is the first movie where a character has my son's name, Everett. If you want drastically different, then we end the movie reviews with one of the movies that launched the Asylum B-movie empire, Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus. After all that, we look at some of the Academy's recent announcements for moves and initiatives they are going to launch that will create more diversity and inclusiveness in the Academy Awards and hopefully, the movie industry. As always, we had a great time recording the show and we really hope you love it as well. If you do, then please help us out by spreading the word on social media. We also want to thank David Wierzbicki for the amazing illustration this week, which is a depiction of the Academy trying peel away their image and reputation for something brighter and more inclusive. If you want to see more great artwork then please check out his Facebook and Instagram pages.Reminder that you can subscribe either to The Movie Breakdown feed (a subscription link is at the top right hand of this site), or subscribe on sites like Spotify, Stitcher, Google Podcasts, CastBox and iTunes. The Movies' Rating Out of Four StarsThe Last Days of American Crime ½* (CS) & 0 stars (SM)The Vast of the Night ***½ (CS & SM)The Age of Innocence ***½ (CS & SM)Mega Shark versus Giant Octopus * (CS) & **½ (SM)

To support the ministry and get access to exclusive content, go to: http://patreon.com/logicalbiblestudy Luke 24: 35-48 - 'It is written that the Christ would suffer on the third day rise from the dead.' Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs: - 644 (in 'The Appearances of the Risen One') - Even when faced with the reality of the risen Jesus the disciples are still doubtful, so impossible did the thing seem: they thought they were seeing a ghost. This is a conversation I had recently w. Researcher, Academic and Journalist Kong Tsung Gan on a very under-reported aspect of the Hong Kong Protests- the issue of 'Lawfare' (law being twisted to punish the citizens it's supposed to protect) and the violence (both abstract and physical) of the legal system... • What does "police brutality' mean? And why have the police become so brutal? • What happens to a protester when they enter Hong Kong's Legal System? And how have laws been weaponized against the citizens they are supposed to serve? • What do phrases like "If we burn you burn with us" mean? • And how can we connect the Hong Kong Protests to other anti-colonial, anti-capitalist, or anti-establishment revolutions? Pankaj Mishra in his book 'The Age of Anger', calls the coming collapse of neoliberal capitalism and politics as the harbinger of the 'civil war of all against all'... I often see Hong Kong in this light... Who wins this war- the protesters or incestuous billionaires allied with a brutal state- is a preview of what the future holds for the rest of the world. To quote another luminary, Philip K Dick once said the 'future is here it's just unevenly distributed', for me Hong Kong is that future. While Generation Z might be the first to grow up surrounded by the Internet as we know it, the generation that was born in the 1990s came of age in the early 2000s (including Nikhil and Sindhu) along with the Internet. We started social media with Myspace and Orkut before we had Facebook, we had Yahoo Mail accounts (!!!) before we moved to Gmail, and Dailymotion and Justin.tv were just as legitimate as YouTube. The Internet seemed to have limitless potential back then, and all of it was seen through a Utopian lens. 10+ years after the Big Four companies - Amazon, Google, Facebook and Apple - entered our lives and stayed there, the Internet looks very different. Scandals with Internet companies are happening on a near-daily basis, like Google's recent data leak of Google Plus user information, Amazon strong-arming its sellers, WhatsApp's circulation of fake news having violent consequences, and Facebook's terrible, horrible, no good, very bad, 2018, causing us to question our relationship with these companies, and by extension, the Internet at large. So where do we go from here? Nikhil and Sindhu attempt to find out. Going MGTOW-AUDIO version

#116 In this episode I talk about going MGTOW. I enjoy Stefan Molyneaux's material. He's a philosopher, podcaster, YouTuber, and author. In his recent review of the Last Jedi movie, he mentioned MGTOW. I became curious and started looking up information on this acronym. What is MGTOW? Who runs the world? Depends on who you ask. James Brown sang that 'It's a Man's Man's Man's World,' but a lot of men living in modern western societies would beg to differ. A few men against the double standards in gender roles and other conditions that favor women and disadvantage men have become part of a pseudonymous online community known as MGTOW Pronounced 'big-tau', MGTOW stands for Men Going Their Own Way. This movement originated on the web and added more fuel to the fire on the ongoing battle of the sexes. According to their website. MGTOW is for men who wish to preserve their sovereignty above all else. History of MGTOW Though this movement seems to have originated online, its ideologies are not new, and some of its ideas go back as far as Ancient Rome and Greece. In fact, most cultures have a historic and natural link to very MGTOW-like ideas. The book 'The Age of the Bachelor' shows that misogamy is not a new concept and that there are records of men avoiding marriage and choosing the bachelor lifestyle. In 1896, Ernest Belfort Bax summarized why men should resist marriage in his essay, 'The Matrimonial Privileges of Women.' This essay outlines 12 key points on why marriage puts men at an unjust disadvantage and leaves them vulnerable to deception and fraud at the hands of their wives. In 1898, a group of men formed the 'Anti-Bardell Bachelor Band.' This club's motto was Solomon's proverb, which stated that it is better for a man to live alone in the corner of a house, than in a wide room with a brawling woman. This club's mandate was to oppose marriage and to fight for the liberty of men. All this information points to the fact that misogamy, which is a key tenet of MGTOW, is not a new concept. Why did it come about? As with all ideologies and movements, there is a lot of debate over who is a 'real MGTOW.' However, there are always crucial principles that members of these changes adhere to. For example, regardless of the various sects and denominations, all Christians believe that Jesus is the son of God. In the same vein, all MGTOW members believe in recognizing how modern societies work when it comes to the role of the sexes and refusing to feed or buy into this system. The following are dominant MGTOW beliefs: 1. Women are hypergamous. This means that they will always look for the most potent partner they can get through marriage. Today, wealth is equated to power, and a lot of women will look for a rich man to marry. However, in their younger years, a woman may temporarily hook up with a man who is physically compelling and attractive. 2. Females are intrinsically hedonistic. This means that they are materialistic and often pursue sexual pleasure, even though she may be ashamed to admit this. 3. Several social and political changes in Western societies are detrimental to men. Some of the issues raised by MGTOW include 'no-fault' divorces, child custody battles that favor women, easy access to abortion, the contraceptive pill, and unjust alimony claims. All these changes have made it a lot easier for women to trade up their partner for a more powerful man while allowing the state and her former husband to support her. The different social and cultural changes have made it possible for a woman to divorce her husband and leave him without his children or his home. 4. The MGTOW movement argues against some of the claims made by feminists and social observers. They point out that suicide rates are very high in men compared to women, and that men are over-represented in fatal and dirty jobs such as construction work and the military. MGTOW argue that most women have the chance to live long and healthy lives at the emotional and material expense of men. 5. Men are subject to a double standard that expects them to protect women while still accommodating demands for equality. MGTOW argue that women are allowed to 'have their cake and eat it.' Women want a lot of chivalric deference when it comes to certain aspects, but they want to be treated as equals in other aspects. Phrases such as 'Man Up' are frowned upon by the MGTOW movement because they require a man to fit into a certain gender mold and provide for a woman, while still enduring the risk of losing everything he has 'manned up' and worked for in case of a divorce. 6. MGTOW are against a behavior known as 'white knighting.' This involves conforming to chivalric traditions such as buying women gifts or defending her social views publicly. Members of the movement view this behavior as self-defeating, as they argue that the man will be emotionally and financially used up, after which the woman will discard him for a more powerful male. Men who have developed white-knighting capabilities and are unable to determine the direction of their lives are referred to as 'mangina,' which is a vulgar term for complete surrender to a woman. 7. Men who believe in MGTOW ideas say that they have taken 'the red pill.' This is a reference to the Matrix Film, in which Neo swallows a red pill and becomes aware of the true nature of the world and his imprisonment in an artificial reality. Members will often refer to their life before they discovered the MTGOW movement as their 'blue pill' life. 8. Because of all the disadvantages men face, the movement feels that there is no way men can ever win in any heterosexual relationship with women. As a result, the only way forward is for men to 'go their own way' until society either reforms or collapses. They argue that this move helps protect men's financial, emotional, and social well-being. However, the intention of men going their way is not selfish. A lot of men in this movement spend time discussing how to improve themselves financially and how to leave a legacy.   What are the levels of MGTOW? 1. Situational awareness Men in this group are aware that the odds are stacked against them when it comes to relationships, but they are still willing to take the risk. They know that they are disadvantaged, but they do not necessarily reject this system. While they are different from people who are living a blue pill life and who still wallow in propaganda about patriarchy, they do not entirely fit into the MGTOW movement or label. 2. Rejection of long-term relationships Men at this level reject all long-term relationships, including marriage and cohabitation. The argument is that there is no reason for men to get married today. When the marriage goes south, the children could be ripped from the man at a moment's notice, and he may never be allowed to see them again. Furthermore, women do not have any social or legal obligation to men, yet men are required to carry all traditional obligations while still conforming to progressive commitments. 3. Rejection of short-term relationships Members in this level reject any personal relationship with women, including friendships, one-night stands, and dating. Contact is kept at a minimum, and all conversations must be professional. The main reasons for this include broadening definitions of sexual assault and sexual harassment. For example, most members are against heaping culpability on men while removing culpability in women for their actions when defining rape, such as in situations where both parties were drunk when they engaged in sex. 4. Economic disengagement At this level, a man strives to produce just enough for his survival. He does as much work as possible off the books to reduce taxation and keeps himself in the lowest tax bracket reasonable without negatively affecting his standard of living or way of life. In reality, men do not require a lot of resources to be content. However, women drive most of the consumption in the modern world. Therefore, the best way to incentivize a man to work hard and create was to encourage him to get a family. Even after he loses his family, the law continues to inspire him to produce by requiring him to pay alimony and child support. Economic disengagement is a way for MGTOW members to shun this system. 5. Societal rejection This involves completely understanding how society works and rejecting the entire system. An MGTOW in this level will minimize all contact with the blue pill world out of disdain or a desire to protect himself. He may interact with others due to his job or public duty. However, this interaction is kept professional and at a minimum. In extreme situations, the MGTOW member may leave the current society altogether and look for a less misandric country to live in. Why is MGTOW more prevalent today? Most MGTOW views balk at current social and cultural conventions in the Western world, which is why a lot of the debate is limited to anonymous posts in forums. However, misogamy and the fight for the liberty of the male is as old as antiquity. In the past, a lot of people who decided to live as bachelors were shamed, and some countries enacted a bachelor tax. However, the internet has made it easier for men who are against misandry to express themselves and to connect with others who have similar beliefs. Another factor that has contributed to the rise of MGTOW is extreme or toxic feminism. Misandric societies continuously enact laws that favor women to the detriment of men. In most of these cases, men cannot speak up out of fear of being called misogynistic or sexist. Most of these men have gone underground and chosen to become part of the MGTOW movement. Did MGTOW show up in the recent Star Wars: The Last Jedi movie? Some of the things that most people found appealing in the old Star Wars movies were the Jedi's and Luke Skywalker. The latest movie provides a fascinating look at the relationship between the sexes in most workplaces. A lot of MGTOW members feel that the latest film was a misandric mess, though there are instances of male characters who chose to go their way. For example, Poe Dameron defies direct orders from his boss. He leads his revel air force to victory, though there are also a lot of casualties. He is reprimanded and slapped by Leia for not understanding the chain of command. He is even demoted for his trouble. When Leia goes into a coma, she is replaced by Vice Admiral Holdo, who doesn't feel the need to tell Poe Dameron everything about their mission. She urges Poe to stick to his post and follow orders, but he ignores her. Several rebel fighters die as a result of this. When Leia and Holdo finally let Poe in on their plans, he blabs it loudly enough for a DJ to hear them and sell them out. There is a subtle message that women are usually right and men are mostly wrong. MGTOW feel that most male heroes in the movies have been replaced by female ones. Admiral Holdo is the heroine in this franchise, as she jumped into hyperspace and sacrificed herself for The Resistance. When Finn tries to do the same, Rose stops him and then proclaims that she saved him. Conclusion There are a lot of misconceptions about the MGTOW movement. There are people who merely think it is a group of bitter men who have a list of jilted female lovers they are angry about. There are others who believe that MGTOW members are conservatives who are afraid of losing their male privilege. However, both of these accusations could not be further from the truth. A lot of conservatives are pro-marriage, and they would be the first to request men to 'man up' and fulfill their gender roles. Most MGTOW members have been in relationships. However, after a logical risk-benefit analysis and cost-benefit analysis, they have concluded that it is not worth it to pursue any romantic relationship with women. These members would like to continue this path peacefully without being shamed by society for their decisions.   Am I MGTOW? I'm a child of divorced parents. I believe this has affected my relationships with women for years. Mostly in the commitment area. I would date someone for 2-3 months and end it. I think this was out of fear of potentially getting my heart broken. In 2017, I attempted to get back into the dating scene. I read books, listened to podcasts. Spent money on subscriptions to Match.com and OkCupid. I also tried Coffee Meets Bagel, Tinder, Bumble. I sent numerous emails, met a person and went on a couple of dates, but she wasn't what I was looking for. Many attempts but little to no action. I tried this for about six months and just stopped. I went the route of hiring sex workers when feeling horny; I haven't looked back. This was one of those things I was afraid to do. I still get nervous when I'm doing it. Each situation has been positive but not perfect, and that's ok. This is where I think I'm going MGTOW. Choosing to not date, to not chase women. In the long term, there is less money spent moving in this direction. I will save my money for other endeavors such as travel or my various projects. Or is this just an excuse to stop trying to date because its hard. I know anything worthwhile is difficult. The key word being 'thing.' Dealing with people can be unpredictable. Working with a 'thing' typically has a desired outcome. This is another experiment in a life full of experiments. That in itself is exciting. Shamil Basayev became involved in the nearby Dagestan War after he lost his bid for president. This prompted Vladimir Putin to launch the Second Chechen War, which successfully reclaimed Grozny for the Russians. Since then, Chechnya has been officially under Russian control, but there is still a strong insurgency. In 2003, Shamil's subordinate launched an attack on a theater in Moscow. 850 hostages were taken and demands were made (the Chechens wanted an immediate Russian withdrawal from Chechnya). After a few days of negotiation, Putin allowed the Russian Spetsnaz to enter. The Spetsnaz pumped a sleeping agent into the theater and knocked many of the terrorists and hostages asleep. The Spetsnaz then entered and killed all of the terrorists. Afterwards, many of the hostages got sick from the gas.In 2004, Shamil's men launched an attack on a school in Beslan. 1200 teachers, parents, and children were taken hostage and held in atrocious conditions for several days. Eventually, the Russians raided the school. Many civilian casualties resulted from the fire that resulted and approximately 1/4 of the hostages were killed. In 2006, Shamil was killed (probably by Russian security forces). Shamil Basayev is a politician and self-proclaimed terrorist fighting for Chechnya's independence from Russia. Chechnya is a small Muslim republic in southern Russia. Basayev has ties to Al Qaeda, the Mujahideen, and many other terrorist networks. He was active in the Georgian-Abkhaz conflict, where his Abkhaz Battalion helped to fight off the Georgian Army. This Abkhaz Battalion was then brought back to defend Chechnya's capitol city of Grozny. Shamil held off Russia's invading force (which went in under Yeltsin) for awhile but he eventually had to flee.In June 1995, when things weren't looking good for the Chechen separatists, Shamil led an attack on a hospital in Budyonnovsk and took 1800 people hostage. The hostage-taking eventually resulted in a Russian withdrawal from Chechnya, and Shamil became a national hero. A few months later, Shamil would lead an assault of Grozny and he succeeded in taking the capital back from the Russians. Due mostly to Shamil, the Russians lost the First Chechen War.For more information:Theage.comhttp://fmso.leavenworth.army.mil/documents/shamil/shamil.htmhttp://www.time.com/time/europe/magazine/2002/1104/cover/story.htmlhttp://www.caucasus.dk/publication1.htmhttp://www.smallwarsjournal.com/documents/wolvesden.htmhttp://www.globalsecurity.org/military/world/war/chechnya2.htmhttp://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/3624136.stmhttp://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/3627406.stmMilitary History Podcast is sponsored by Armchair General Magazine

Leading British industrialist and pioneer of automation Sir Leon Bagrit continues his Reith lectures. He is the Chairman and Managing Director of Elliott Automation Ltd, one of the first companies in Europe devoted to automation, and speaks on this topic in his series entitled 'The Age of Automation'. In this lecture entitled 'Automation: Industrial and Economic Consequences', Sir Bagrit asks how we can put automation into practice at a national level. How should it be assimilated in the lives of the British citizens? Sir Bagrit argues that the development of new machines will lead to a golden age of mass comfort and opportunity. Thus, he claims, technological advancement needs to be quickened and not slowed.
