Each year, millions of workdays are lost because of alcohol misuse, and more than forty percent of employers cite alcohol as a factor contributing to low productivity. With the pandemic leading to a steep increase in ‘high risk' drinking, Liam Sloan and Dr Mark Simpson are joined by Lauren Booker, a consultant at Alcohol Change UK and co-founder of the ‘Dry January' movement, to explore how employers can support individuals struggling with alcohol issues, in an episode discussing:   • Defining terms around alcohol misuse   • Identifying problematic drinking behaviours   • Avoiding an unhealthy and exclusionary ‘alcohol culture' in your organisation   • How employers can initiate dialogue with employees who may be experiencing alcohol problems   • Available resources for employees concerned about their alcohol use   • The employer's legal obligations towards staff disclosing alcohol problems   • How to promote healthier alternatives to alcohol in the workplace Presented by Liam Sloan and Dr Mark Simpson. With Lauren Booker. Produced and edited by Nick Hilton for Podot.

It's time for episode 29 of the series, and Paula and Jo are talking to Jane about bullying and how fitting in at school was at the very start of her relationship with alcohol. Jane now helps stressed mums in Bournemouth, and globally via online platforms, to get Clear, Calm, and Confident, through effective online Life Coaching courses, Confidence Coaching sessions and Holistic Therapies. For many children fitting in is really important and there are many ways they do that, for some, once they've chosen alcohol it can be the start of a longer relationship with it that they could have never foreseen. In today's episode they'll be sharing how alcohol can be used as a crutch, and without realising it become something so much more. Looking at how available it is and how it's rarely frowned upon because it's so acceptable in society. No one starts of using alcohol because they want an addiction, it grows over time. What support do they gain as they transition through their teenage years and an adult when they are following similar patterns as it is all they know? The language folx use when talking about problematic drinking is pretty much EXACTLY how I speak about the Imposter Complex. It keeps us out of action, doubting our capacity, and alone and isolated. And it has me thinking: when are we blaming our stuckness on the Imposter Complex when actually it’s alcohol use or overuse—NOT a mindset issue. And that’s why I invited Andrea Owen on the show. Andrea is a life coach and author who helps women let go of the shitty self-talk. AND she’s someone who has quit drinking and become sober. So together in this episode, Andrea and I talk about the intersection of the Imposter Complex, belonging, and alcohol, marketing alcohol to women...and how it’s a feminist issue, and a question folx who quit drinking ask: can I trust what I built before I got sober? Women are significantly more likely than men to have co-occurring addiction and mental health disorders, including eating disorders, with implications for how to engage and support women in getting the help they need.   Dr. Sarah Wicks, a clinical psychologist at Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation, joins Marti & Erin in this week’s Mom Enough episode to discuss unique challenges faced by women dealing with addiction and, more broadly, how to approach a loved one (male or female) you believe has a substance use problem. She highlights how to approach the loved one in ways that will help the person be receptive rather than push away. Dr. Wicks also offers special advice for parents who suspect their teen may have problems with alcohol or drugs, pointing out the greater effect of those substances on the brains of people under 25. She introduces Marti & Erin to services tailored to teens and their parents, including outpatient services and phone coaching for parents.   Have women or girls in your family or circle of friends faced substance use problems? Other mental health issues? How was that similar to or different from what you have observed with males you have known? What do you think would help to reduce barriers to women getting treatment for addiction and mental health disorders?   Related resources: Connection for Families phone-based coaching sessions Teen Intervene education, support & guidance for teens & their parents Women, Alcohol Misuse and Keys to Prevention and Recovery featuring Carrie Kappel Women and Alcohol featuring Jill Seward

Listen NowThe e-cigarette market, or what the FDA formally terms Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems or ENDS, has grown since 2004 to approximately 11 million American consumers.  Recent survey data published in February in JAMA has shown use of e-cigarettes (or vaping) among underage youths or middle and high school students has increased significantly since 2011.   Beyond potentially serving as a gateway to the use of combustible or tobacco cigarettes, there is research to suggest nicotine can harm developing adolescent brains and the exhaled aerosol can also pose a public health threat.   Beyond the significant increase in under age use there is also concern recent investments in the e-cigarette industry by tobacco manufacturers, specifically Altria's December investment in e-cigarette manufacturer, JUUL, will result in e-cigarette users transitioning to tobacco cigarettes.  Recently resigned FDA Commissioner, Scott Gotlieb, made e-cigarette regulation a priority throughout his two-year tenure.  The question begged is will FDA's e-cigarette regulatory actions prove productive, will they prevent or inhibit current and future consumers of nicotine from taking up of combustible/tobacco cigarettes and/or allow or encourage current tobacco cigarette consumers to transition to e-cigarettes a far safer product.    During this 30 minute conversation Professor Abrams critiques the evidence to date that rising use of e-cigarettes among middle and high school students is necessarily a cause for concern, i.e., that e-cigarettes or vaping is a gateway to use of combustible or tobacco cigarettes.  We briefly discuss how underage youths are able to acquire e-cigarettes.  Moreover our discussion focuses on related regulatory actions under the FDA, i.e., is limiting access and use of e-cigarettes or youth addition to nicotine commensurate with the potential massive public health gain.  Are these actions commensurate with the potential to reduce adult combustible cigarette use that remains the leading cause of preventable death in the US at nearly half a million deaths per year (and estimated to kill 1 billion throughout the world this century).  We also discuss Altria (manufacturer of Marlboros) recent $13 billion investment in JUUL, the leading e-cigarette manufacturer or what it may mean, reducing nicotine content in cigarettes, raising the minimum age requirement from 18 to 21 to buy tobacco cigarettes and related issues.    Dr. Abrams is currently Profess of Social and Behavioral Sciences at New York University.  Dr. Abrams was a professor and founding director of the Centers for Behavioral and Preventive Medicine at Brown University Medical School.  He then directed the Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).  Until 2017, he was Professor of Health Behavior and Society at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and the founding Executive Director of the Schroeder National Institute of Tobacco Research and Policy Studies at Truth Initiative (formerly the American Legacy Foundation).  Dr. Abrams has published over 250 peer reviewed scholarly articles and been a Principal Investigator on numerous NIH grants.  He is lead author of The Tobacco Dependence Treatment Handbook: A Guide to Best Practices.  He has served on expert panels at NIH and National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine on Obesity, Alcohol Misuse and Ending the Tobacco Problem: A Blueprint for the Nation. We moms are often hard on ourselves, thinking we should be able to raise perfect children, keep a clean house, cook nutritious meals, stay on top of our jobs and always have a smile on our face. We often feel embarrassed or ashamed if we need to ask for help, sacrificing sleep and good health to do everything on our own. We pay a high price for that, and alcohol misuse often is part of the picture, with consequences not only for us but our children and other family members too.   Carrie Kappel knows this, both as a professional working with Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation and as a nurse and drug counselor approaching the 10-year anniversary of her own sobriety.
