Closing out our Emmy coverage, today we feature Ken Burns (“Brooklyn Bridge”, “The Civil War”, “Jazz”) and Lynn Novick (“Frank Lloyd Wright”, “Baseball”, “Hemingway”) discussing their thrice-Emmy nominated “The U.S. and the Holocaust”.  As Ken tells us, this PBS series addresses the “Holocaust, one of the low points of humanity and what Americans knew and what they didn't know, what they did, and more importantly, what they didn't do.”   Ken and Lynn first explain why they start with the story of Anne Frank and her family, and how it reveals how we often don't fully understand the American context of such stories.  They speak with Mike about the deep anti-immigrationist and antisemitic feelings of America between the world wars.  They explain in particular how Eugenics was used to buttress the laws severely limiting immigration, especially from Southern Europe and Eastern Europe–the latter being where most of the world's Jews then lived.  They go on to explain how American Eugenics, along with the ideology of Manifest Destiny and even Jim Crow laws influenced the Nazis and gave them a template for their atrocities.  And they discuss some of what Ken calls “the points of light” in this most horrific time:  Some of the Americans–singularly or in organizations–who stepped up to help Jews escape.   Throughout, as the series shows the depths of the Nazi horrors and the failure of the U.S.--with the notable exception of winning the war–to muster a meaningful response, it demonstrates the importance of maintaining what writer Daniel Mendelsohn calls “the particularity” of the stories of those who died and those who survived.   Hidden Gems:  The Better Angels   Follow: @KenBurns on twitter and @kenlburns on Instagram @LynnNovick on twitter and Instagram @topdocspod on Instagram and twitter   The Presenting Sponsor of "Top Docs" is Netflix.

#052 How Was Margret Sanger's Work Connected To Nazi/American Eugenics? And Why Should It Bother Us?

Physical or Biological Determinism will always cause the sort of societal pain that comes from stripping man of his rights as an image bearer of God. If we view people as simply the flesh that they inhabit, we will rob them of what makes them special: God breathed life and a spirit into each one of us. This gives us a unique value. This realization of the infinite value should move us to view every human as priceless. The trouble with Secular Humanism that neither the value of God nor the value of man is recognized. Only the need for self actualization is acknowledged. So what would happen to a culture saddled with such a worldview if a certain minority were to be singled out as an obstacle to the majority's self-actualization, whether through pseudoscience, religious innuendo, or avarice? We only need to look to recent history to see the results. In the 1700s a man named Thomas Robert Malthus produced the theory that the exponential population growth, combined with an arithmetic food supply growth, would produce immense human suffering in the inevitable overpopulation that would occur. The Malthusian Theory of Population, when combined with Darwinian Evolutionary Theory, bred an incredibly dangerous atmosphere where man thought it best to play God considering God's absence from man's worldview. This playing God took the form of Eugenics, or Good Birth (Eu-Greek for Good, Genes Greek for birth). Eugenics was rather popular during Margret Sanger's day. It is important to remember that while she was a product of her times, those times are not that far behind us and neither are the propositions that motivated people like Margret Sanger. So now that we have partially set the stage, let's not use some Pro-Life source. (Unfortunately, in the zeal for the Pro-Life cause, so many in the Pro-Life movement are not always accurate when representing Sanger. We should always build the strongest version of the opposition's argument when forming a response. Dismantling steelmen, not strawmen, prepares us to engage our culture successfully.) Let us use scholars like Edwin Black (not a conservative), Planned Parenthood, and most importantly, Sanger herself to look at the founder of the contraceptive movement that has evolved into the abortion movement. From Planned Parenthood on Margret Sanger: “Was Sanger Racist? Arguments continue about whether or not her outreach to the Black community was racist. We know that Sanger was conscious of race, and that she was capable of revolutionary thinking that defied sexism of the time. She did not apply that revolutionary thinking to race and class, choosing instead to follow the paternalistic attitudes of the time and willfully ignoring how Black people were harmed by her movement. However, there is no evidence that Sanger, or the Federation, intended to coerce Black women into using birth control: “The fundamental belief, underscored at every meeting, mentioned in much of the behind-the-scenes correspondence, and evident in all the printed material put out by the Division of Negro Service, was that uncontrolled fertility presented the greatest burden to the poor, and Southern blacks were among the poorest Americans. In fact, the Negro Project did not differ very much from the earlier birth control campaigns in the rural South...it would have been more racist, in Sanger's mind, to ignore African Americans in the South than to fail at trying to raise the health and economic standards of their communities” (“Birth Control or Race Control,” 2001).” There are several issues here. First, Sanger herself was an ardent supporter of sterilizing the “unfit”. Quote “As an advocate of birth control, I wish to take advantage of the present opportunity to point out the unbalance between the birth of the ‘unfit' and the fit. Admittedly the greatest present menace to civilization, can never be rectified by the inauguration of a cradle competition between these classes.” -Sanger 1919 This was not simply one race, but many for the average eugenist. The Appalachian, the Southern Italian, the Jew, the Black were all common targets of Sanger's peers in the movement. She was somewhat tight lipped about race, though those she considered to be mentally unfit were fair game (again the issue of IQ was often deduced by race through weighted IQ tests as scholars like Edwin Black are quick to point out.) However, let's look at her actions and words as they speak volumes about her end goals. More from Planned Parenthood “However, it is true that Margaret Sanger made a speech on birth control to a women's auxiliary branch of the Ku Klux Klan in Silver Lake, New Jersey, in 1926 (Sanger, 1938, 366). Sanger was so intent on her mission to advocate for birth control that she chose to align herself with ideologies and organizations that were explicitly ableist and white supremacist. In doing so, she undermined reproductive freedom Black people, Latino people, Indigenous people, immigrants, people with disabilities, people with low incomes, and many others…” But these were the targets of the Eugenics movement. Just recontextualize this with any other person who is not affiliated with Planned Parenthood. Someone who believed in breeding better humans, proposed her ideas to racists, who then furthered her cause. But she was not a racist. She only did racist things surrounded by racist people. “Sanger and Eugenics Eugenics is the theory that society can be improved through planned breeding for “desirable traits” like intelligence and industriousness. In the early 20th century eugenic ideas were popular among highly educated, privileged, and mostly white Americans. Margaret Sanger pronounced her belief in and alignment with the eugenics movement in her writings, especially in the scientific journal Birth Control Review. At times, Sanger tried to argue for a eugenics that was not applied based on race or religion (Katz, 1995, 47).” Point of order, this is what someone else has postulated posthumously to save the face of Planned Parenthood. “But in a society built on the belief of white supremacy, physical and mental fitness are always judged based on race. Eugenics, therefore, is inherently racist.” Sanger also argued that reproductive choices should be made by each woman, not by the state. “Eugenists imply or insist that a woman's first duty is to the state; we contend that her duty to herself is her first duty to the state. We maintain that a woman possessing an adequate knowledge of her reproductive functions is the best judge of the time and conditions under which her child should be brought into the world. We further maintain that it is her right, regardless of all other considerations, to determine whether she shall bear children or not, and how many children she shall bear if she chooses to become a mother. ... Only upon a free, self-determining motherhood can rest any unshakable structure of racial betterment” (Sanger, 1919a).” Also from Sanger: “A marriage license shall in itself give a husband and a wife only the right to a common household and not the right to parenthood.” Sanger- Article 3, 27 March 1934 This provokes the question: Was she speaking about two different groups of people? She often referred to the fit and unfit. She doubled down even further in the same publication when she wrote: “No woman shall have the legal right to bear a child and no man shall have the right to become a father without a permit for parenthood.” These last two quotes came after Sanger supported the Supreme Court Decision Buck v Bell. “Yet Sanger's points of disagreement did not prohibit her from embracing harmful eugenic ideas. For example, she endorsed the 1927 Buck v. Bell decision, in which the Supreme Court ruled that states could forcibly sterilize people deemed “unfit” without their consent and sometimes without their knowledge. The acceptance of this decision by Sanger and other thought leaders laid the foundation for tens of thousands of people to be sterilized, often against their will. (Chesler, 1992, 485) A majority of states would go on to adopt involuntary sterilization policies, leading to more than 60,000 people being sterilized by the states in the 20th century. These policies targeted people with disabilities and people broadly labeled “feebleminded” or “mentally defective” by the state. Sterilization policies were violently ableist, and were applied in deeply racist ways. In the South, so many Black women were given unnecessary hysterectomies that it gave rise to the euphemism “Mississippi appendectomy.” In California, 20,000 people were sterilized between 1909 and 1979, among them a disproportionate number of Black, Mexican American, and Asian American people. In the 1970s and 80s, Indigenous women were sterilized at staggering rates, without their consent: At least 25% of Native American women were sterilized between 1970 and 1976. The ripples of the Buck v. Bell decision are still felt today. In 2020 at Irwin County Detention Center in Georgia, immigrant detainees were sterilized against their will. Sterilization policies in the U.S. in the 1930s would ultimately inspire some of the worst human rights atrocities in the history of the world, including the Nazi regime's eugenics laws. While Sanger was not associated with Nazism — her books were among the first burned by Nazis in their campaign against family planning (“Sanger on Exhibit,” 1999/2000), and she helped several Jewish women and men and others escape the Nazi regime in Germany (“Margaret Sanger and the ‘Refugee Department',” 1993) — she is not absolved of her endorsement of Buck v. Bell and the harm it caused. Sanger's belief in eugenics undermined reproductive freedom and caused irreparable damage to the health and lives of generations of Black people, Latino people, Indigenous people, immigrants, people with disabilities, people with low incomes, and many others. Planned Parenthood denounces Margaret Sanger's belief in eugenics.” Sanger may not have liked where things ended up in Germany, but she had already met the Nazis half way with the Buck v Bell case. It is important to note, that she shifted her approach in light of the Nazi situation, but Edwin Black in his book “The War Against the Weak” is clear to note that he does not believe that Sanger was a racist, but consorted with the worst of them. Why might she have done this? She would say herself: “These two words (Birth Control) sum up our whole philosophy. It means the release and cultivation of the better elements in our society, and the gradual suppression, elimination, and eventual extinction of defective stocks… Those human weeds which threaten the finest flowers of American Civilization.” -Sanger “Highlights in the History of Birth Control” October 1923. All of our problems are the result of overbreeding among the working class… Knowledge of birth control is essentially moral. Its general, though prudent, practice must lead to a higher individuality and ultimately a cleaner race.” -Sanger “Morality and Birth Control.” Feb 1918. She may have even had good intentions. But shouldn't that scare us all the more? Should this idea that all of this was done for the betterment of the human race and female sex be all the more frightening? We need a standard. In the episode, "American Eugenics, the Immigrant Degenerate, and Systemic Racism (S2, E18)," I share more of the ideology of Eugenics, or the practice of selectively breeding humans to achieve a better race, which has been taught in America since the early 20th century. Is it superior genes that excludes poverty from someone's experience? Or the ability to afford an education? In the belief that defective genes run in families, which supports that mental illness is hereditary, the status of the immigrant  continues to be seen as degenerative as Trump proved in his anti-immigrant rhetoric rousing half the nation. Claiming only sterilization can eliminate our social problems, The Passing of the Great Race by Madison Grant, led to sterilization of 60,000 immigrants in America,  and also inspired Hitler and German Eugenics in WWII. Today people are still being influenced by the history of racism, colonialism and Nazism in scientific publishing—particularly in psychiatric journals, which continues to contribute greatly to the deep-rooted systemic racism in America. #mentalhealth #mentalillness #bipolardisorder #depression #systemicracism #eugenics #madisongrant #mexicanamericans #italianamericans #NaziGermany #defectivegene #heredity #wrongtheory #whitesupremacyPlease visit my website at: http://www.notascrazyasyouthink.com/Don't forget to subscribe to the Not As Crazy As You Think YouTube channel @SicilianoJenConnect:Instagram: @jengaita LinkedIn: @jensicilianoTwitter: @jsiciliano

Campaign Finance Laws The Supreme Court often operates like a conservative activist group to help the GOP. One of the most egregious ways they've tipped the scales is in campaign finance. Starting with their infamous Buckley ruling in 1976, SCOTUS categorized corporate political donations as free speech. Their 2011 follow-up, Citizens United, removed almost all limitations on political spending, creating a vast increase in campaign spending. Rich Americans and corporations are now free to give as much as they want to whoever they want. This has greatly benefitted Republicans at the cost of electoral fairness. Poverty The liberal, pro-New Deal, Warren Court was replaced in 1969 by the conservative Burger Court. The contrast was stark. One of the Warren Court's last cases provided significant due process protections to poor Americans whose welfare benefits were in danger. As soon as the Nixon-appointed Burger stepped in, decisions changed. The Burger Court immediately heard a case involving family caps on welfare and ruled in the opposite direction. Families with more than four children could only receive benefits for the maximum cap of four children, exacerbating poverty for large families. With that ruling, a new tone was struck and SCOTUS has ruled against the poor ever since. Education The conservative Burger Court also devastated public education. It reversed a Texas decision, which had ruled that the state must fund rich and poor school districts equally. This SCOTUS decision essentially created a tiered school system with affluent neighborhoods on the top and poor ones on the bottom. Next, it ruled that desegregation efforts in schools could not cross urban/suburban lines. This transformative ruling undercut desegregation efforts and exacerbated schooling inequities. Today, many schools are segregated by both race and class because of these rulings. Eugenics is the nonsensical idea that we can somehow manipulate human breeding, and produce so called "good stock", a silly term that is essentially an insult to anyone who is not anglo-saxon christian. Such an archaic ideal would seem primitive were it not for the rise of Donald Trump, but, alas, you cannot change the past. However, you can change the present and in order to do that we must examine our history, not matter how difficult to deal with it may be.  It becomes quite difficult in this episode as we examine in depth the genesis of the eugenics movement, which began on a large scale right here in the United States. Though it may be sickening to admit, eugenics has been behind many of the laws enacted in this nation. But where  did it all start? The answer is with Carrie Buck, a woman who would go on to be sterilized after losing a court case in the US supreme court. The court determined Buck was unfit to be a mother due to her "criminal behavior" and "promiscuity". But was there any basis behind these claims? Was Buck a criminal or a victim? And, further, did the United States ever have the right to police promiscuity in the first place? In all honesty, these are questions I once thought I would never have to ask, but with the rise of eugenics like movements such 6MWE (a disgusting reference to holocaust victims) and the proud boys, along with the recent insurrections, I felt it was necessary to get the message out about American eugenics to as many as possible.  What is the cost of peace? What is the price we pay for not taking a stand for anything in a world that disagrees on everything? Can you be neutral on a moving train? History does not seem to think so. It seems that if you allow those with malevolent intent to form strongholds in government institutions that the last thing you are going to experience is peace. It seems like you might have an all out war on your hands. But what if no one wants to fight that war? Or, worse, what if only the malevolent people are interested in even showing up to the fight? That is the situation we are currently facing in this country. I don't know anyone standing up for decency, but I sure hear a lot of people talking about peace. Standing up is considered passe these days, especially if it is for something worthwhile. Talk is cheap, and peace is expensive. Peace leads to complicity and the acceptance of the things we can change. We don't need to learn to deal with it like the right has been telling us to do for years. We don't need to be told that love is the answer again. We have heard that before. We know that you just want us to shut up, go back to work and die. Your token attempts at charity and giving are completely meaningless in these conditions. Your constant hunt for peace has only resulted in more war. So, how do we become less polarized during this resurgence of eugenics? Should we become less polarized when the very problem before was that so few people cared? Is peace just a more honorable form of apathy? You have to ask yourself those questions. The answers are different for everyone. However, history never changes. American history has blood on its hands, and it is up to you to clean it. Supreme Court’s Agenda Although we are taught to believe the Supreme Court is a neutral institution whose primary concern is justice, it is actually an extremely powerful legal body with its own agenda. For the last 50 years, that agenda has been staunchly conservative. Instead of functioning as a check on executive and legislative powers, it operates as its own power building machine, often making decisions that favor itself or the conservative lawmakers who put a majority of the justices in power. The Supreme Court is confident in its position and its conservative views, and has no qualms about overruling democratic decisions to keep itself—and conservative lawmakers—in power. Far-Reaching Impacts Decisions made by the Supreme Court have long and far-reaching consequences. On the positive side, single Supreme Court decisions helped desegregate American schools, create due process protections like Miranda Rights, and legalize same-sex marriages. At the same time, the conservative Supreme Court has greatly inflated the power of corporations over ordinary citizens; consistently ruled against the poor and welfare rights; and allowed our electoral system to become overrun by powerful interests with their campaign finance rulings. Their decisions have very real consequences for everyday Americans, whether we all understand that or not. Anti-Poor With the exception of the progressive Warren Court of the 1950-60s, the Supreme Court has showed itself to be antagonistic towards America’s poor. It has continually ruled against welfare rights, labor rights, voting rights, and even equal funding for education. The court has also refused to give poor Americans the protected minority status they so desperately need. Instead, the court has repeatedly ruled in favor of America’s rich and on behalf of corporations, further exacerbating the plight of the poor. Companies have substantially increased protections in their power over workers, while organized labor has lost much of their ability to protect workers. CRISPR is the cutting edge of genetic-modification techniques and will likely transform scientists ability to change the DNA of virtually any organism on the planet, including humans. How will this technology be used? What should it be used? Where will this usage of the technology take humanity? Correction: During the video, Andy says the Cas9 protein reads the CRISPR DNA and makes RNA. This is not correct. The RNA is made by the RNA polymerase of the cell. Cas9 will bind to THAT RNA after it is cleaved. It is that Cas9 / RNA complex which then binds the DNA and clips it. What’s Left? Is progressivism the destroyer of equal opportunity?

Welcome everyone to Finance and Fury, the Furious Friday edition. Today’s episode is part 5 of the miniseries. The last part looked at the ‘fair go’, what is fair for some, isn’t for others. Nearing end of series, I want to put forward a case. The constant need to make things ‘fair’ i.e. have an equal distribution of goods = destroys equality of opportunity for a nation. It destroys what makes nations great (no opportunity from authoritarian governments, we covered this in episode 2), and starts to reduce the freedoms of the nation which is the equality of opportunity. Where does this ‘fairness’ mandate come from? Because it’s a relatively new concept in society. The cause is our progressive nature. Progressivism is the support for the improvement of society by reform A philosophy based on the idea of progress, which asserts that advancements in science, technology, economic development, and social organisation are vital to the improvement of the human condition Progress is what separates us from other animals, which is why we are the ‘king of the jungle’ Our desire for never-ending improvement is great! Allows us to better our positions. We are hardwired to do it. However, there are not many inventions from those being coerced into creating verse those people who are passionate This is where reform comes into it, and I have an issue with it. The reform is a type of social movement that aims to bring a political system (in Democracy) closer to the community's ideal Reforms are mandated changes by the government. Reform in a democracy, politicians will pander to the crowd. This is seen across civilisations, like in Rome with Caesar and the mob rule At the core of progressive philosophy is the improvement of the human condition As the human condition is measured on the individual level, progress is great. But when you measure it in collectives (groups), that’s where you can find issues Measure progress: All individuals doing relatively better, but some groups did better than others This is when progressivisms will make any country socialist if left unchecked/or goes unnoticed. This is the focus of today’s episode. Swapping the focus of individual conditions to group conditions, in the nature of progress, seems to lead a nation to become socialist   Progress itself: Humans always change, nature is always progressing. Progress is fantastic, only when it benefits everyone Technology throughout history, with fire, the wheel, and the printing press, the internet, and telephones During the age of enlightenment during the 18th + 19th century lead to an explosion in knowledge sharing and technology, and wealth (free market) First adopters got very wealthy through the new industries like banking, oil, and railroads. These are all relatively new technologies and they built empires for the individuals who managed to corner the market In society, up until about the 1600s most western countries were ruled under a monarchy, which people genuinely accepted. It was understood as the monarchy having the divine right to rule. But then, people were given the freedom to do what they want. The feudal system then shifted to more free markets. The wealth of monarchs never helped anyone, whereas, the wealth of robber barons helped millions of individuals Got wealth through providing cheaper oil, heating, steel, and general goods that people use These resources, now available at the turn of the age of enlightenment, helped many people, but also generated a lot of wealth for the owners What happens when equality is now a mandate of the government? Now progressivism is about equalising economic and social conditions The problem? Some people have more money than others. The solution under this mandate? Something is wrong with the system, and you just need to redistribute the wealth Do you want to help those at the bottom? What is help? Give a man a fish to eat, or teach him how to fish? Which is the better solution? Enter in new economic theories for new inequality and how to equalise the wealth distribution. Not let anyone own anything in the first place. 1900’s progressives originally thought the problems society faced could best be addressed by providing good education, a safe environment, and an efficient workplace. This all sounds brilliant, but slowly changed the focus on solutions In the early 20th Century, theories were put into action with ‘reform’ like communist/socialist movements (economic/eugenic) Socialism upbringing across a lot of nations lead to the starvation, from reform, 110 million dead The reforms themselves come from the legislate for compliance in society. That’s with the governmental power over the population. Increased when some of the population want it (Social organisation – One of four Core Components of Progressivism) This all comes back to activism: with groups campaigning for laws as votes equal change Question: Is it better to let people choose to adopt something for themselves, or is it better to force them into adopting it? Well, I guess it depends on the thing Small groups campaign for laws based around the common views, and it is what most of the population (in areas) wanted Plenty of examples in history, like the Jim Crow laws in the USA as racial segregation laws. These laws are why Rosa Parks was arrested for, which is where the Civil Rights movement came out of Put into place by Democrats, they really wanted racial segregation laws in the South. It got removed by LBJ (D) – ‘ill have those N voting democrat for 200 years’ KKK used as the militant wing of Democratic Party. They are both on the left, the KKK, racist socialists like neo-Nazi’s, and the democratic party all have the collective ideologies. It’s just the KKK are far more vocal about their racist views Wanted to improve genetic breeding through extermination of blacks, which is horrible, they used reform for them to achieve this Question: when ‘intellectuals/experts’ do studies, and prove that they can improve the human race and that the government are the only ones who can help A lot of the population get behind it, the active ones anyway, wouldn’t it be great to have the government make these reforms? Worse example: Eugenics was a big movement pushed by intellectuals and put into place by the government – Strap yourselves in, as this is an extreme example of why the government shouldn’t have power over these reform decisions The project of improving the human population through a statistical understanding of heredity  Developed by Francis Galton, closely linked to Darwinism and his theory of natural selection (cousins) Galton was a polymath came up with a multitude of concepts in multiple fields, like meteorology (weather maps), statistics (regression and correlation), psychology, biology (heredity), and criminology (fingerprints). He also came up with the concept of eugenics. Picked up interest with the progressive era in the US around the 1900s through to the 1920s or so. This is where it took a dark turn, as 60,000 (1/3 in California) people were sterilized in the United States based on eugenic laws. 32 U.S. states passed sterilization laws between 1907 and 1937 Surgeries reached their highest numbers in the late 1930s and early 1940s. Designed to remove weak genetics from the gene pool against criteria on individuals Things were more direct with surgeries without consent or a person's knowledge Still happens today, from 2006 to 2010 in California 146 female inmates were sterilized Why don’t we hear of Eugenics much today? Hitler was a big fan, in Mein Kampf (My Struggle), Hitler credits American Eugenics as the inspiration for his final solution. ‘Aryan’ comes from Galton and Eugenics, Nazi’s just used the term Progress on the scale, the Nazi’s prefer to commit genocide. It’s horrible, but it was the German efficiency way Joseph Mengele (Rockefeller Foundation funded), before going to Auschwitz, he was conducting more experiments in conjunction with Californian scientists Word got out late in the war. These US scientists had to change marketing strategies now that Hitler had ruined the party Mobilisation and Destruction has also progressed, as seen in Wars WW1: Nobody had seen war in the ‘modern’ era. With machine guns, artillery, UBoats, basic planes, and tanks at the end Biggest in 100 years in EU since the Napoleonic war, where 5m people died (one other war in this period in China with more casualties), the type of fighting was trench warfare WW1 13-14m died in just over 4 years. There have been wars in past that killed as many, but took decades Everyone said ‘never again’ to world wars, until WW2 broke out WW2: War fought over ‘progressive’ ideas at the time, and left 84m dead in 6 years (horrible thing was mostly civilians) Mongols had the gold medal until this with 50m deaths but took 163 years (1206). Comparing the two, we have 200k vs 14m per year (68 times more). Hence, we have come a long way in 700 years in progressive natures of the wars. The countries with most death as a % were by authoritarian governments Russia (32% of war causalities translates to 13.7% of their population), Germany, (8.7% of war causalities and barely a percent of the population) Manhattan Project gave the ability to decimate an empire with nuke bombs End of the war with Operation Paperclip took in 1,600 Nazi Scientists, they started working on NASA with rocket technology Cold war (war of progress and race for more power) Russia made the Tsar bomb in 1961 which was a 50 megaton bomb (of TNT) Little Boy dropped on Hiroshima was 15 kilotons (of TNT) – the Tsar bomb is 3,333 bigger and was meant to be 100 megatons The Tsar bomb created a fireball 8km wide, mushroom cloud 65km up (planes 10.5km), and 95km wide at the top Village 55km away destroyed, wooden hundreds of kms, windows 900km shattered, and a shock wave 3 times around the earth’s circumference Imagine setting a bomb off in Brisbane and shattering windows in Sydney Thankfully, it was decided to be mutually assured destruction. This has kept world powers from another WW but has sparked a conflict by trying to keep them away from some countries. Still hasn’t helped stop smaller wars though What happened? Progress had been going well up until the turn of 20th The focus changed Enlightenment had been about progress for the betterment of the individual. Also, for individuals to have equal opportunity Classical Liberalism from the 1600s. The 10 values are: 1) Liberty as the primary political value; 2) Individualism; 3) Scepticism about power; 4) Rule of Law; 5) Civil Society; 6) Spontaneous Order; 7) Free Markets; 8) Toleration; 9) Peace; 10) Limited Government. This is where the government is needed though, for the law, creating peaceful environments and building infrastructure J Locke, wrote a lot on classical liberalism and is one of the major influencers for the American constitution. From 1680 – 1950: an explosion of wealth from these concepts End of True Monarchy (now Constitutional), this increased freedom of choices. Created a prosperous society. Morphed at the end of the 19th century (1860). Modern/Social Liberalism, the role of the government includes addressing economic and social issues such as poverty, health care, and education. Increasing government size and responsibility, no longer a limited government Changed during the 20th century as influenced by socialism: Social democracy as a progressive modification of capitalism Broadly defined as a project that aims to correct what it regards as the intrinsic defects of capitalism Reducing inequalities through government reform Characterised by a commitment to policies aimed at curbing inequality, oppression of underprivileged groups and poverty. The focus is on groups View of who holds the solution changed. Used to be individuals and small communities to now it being governments (Biggest community of all) When you get everything you want and the problem still isn’t solved, what then? Keep pushing for the government to make it fair, rather than the people. When people are the solution, people build their own wealth and the government helps to facilitate an environment that allows us to be wealthy. But, if the government is the solution, all it has to do is take and then redistribute Socialism: The power of governments is embraced and expanded, we lose the free market as it’s now controlled, collectivist rule. This is the polar opposite of civil society because we lose spontaneous order. Which is the matter of individuals being able to organise themselves properly, rather than being forced to by a government. You also lose toleration, because now society is intolerant of those with wealth. You lose all the foundations, except maybe the rule of law. Now you have entered into reducing equality of opportunity for increased equality of outcome As soon as the government is seen as the solution, society is doomed They paint themselves as the solution. Every campaign is on what they can do for you, they need your vote so they need to sell you what they can do for you What do politicians have? They have power, large groups of them have a lot of power. A recent example is the Anti-Encryption Act that was recently passed Power is addictive, politicians tend to behave like addicts. Do and say anything short term to get what they want With ever-increasing demands from the population, ever-increasing power given to the government We went through examples of importance to limit government powers/involvement with ‘progress’ Authority/Power of governments increased again after monarchy at the turn of the century Governments had conscription and Central Banks. The Fed in 1914 provided almost unlimited funding WW1 should have been the 1000th Balkan war. Austria and Hungary annexed land from Serbia, and the Black Hand shooting Franz Ferdinand. But, thanks to treaties between Russia, France, and the UK they created this global extent of death and destruction. WW2 (less avoidable, however, WW1 set it up) Hitler 1933-1939 he ruled fairly peacefully, but he was seen as the solution for German problems. Because Germany wasn’t doing so well in the 1930s, he even one times person of the year in 1938. All of a sudden, he invaded Poland 6 years later, Stalin and Hitler were to split it 50/50. Once again, all large governments (Communists were seen as the solution there) because they promised people everything. But skip forward, they don’t turn out too good, as they end with a lot of death and destruction.   The whole point of ep? That government with too much power end up destroying freedoms. We are what makes it happen I hope that I have been able to explain it properly: Solution = Government, going to lead to the population voting for more government Population driven shift on the political spectrum to authoritarian regimes It’s a cycle: more power (to do) they have, then they start to become the solution for more things = authoritarian May be a secondary consequence of the belief in government solutions for problems. Say for instance you have 2 scenarios: Grow up in a world where the government can’t help you, there’s no social support, or housing. It’s a harder world Government provides social support, the government provides solutions to your problems What scenario would you be more likely to make sure you don’t fail? I think that the more someone else says they will solve your problems, the less you will look for your own solution The world is a scary place, but only if you don’t learn how to prosper in it. Like when the solution is the government. Makes a very easily controlled population, when everyone is reliant on the government Why it is important to have balance, like different policies and what the government should be involved in You either want the government to have more, or less interference in your life. And right now there is nothing that the government isn’t involved with. For e.g. Rego (car), bike (gst, helmet), Owning an animal (getting it registered) The current speed on reforms, takes a lot of time to see how reforms will impact society. If too many changes are done at once, it can be the downfall of freedoms for the individual   What is another option? If the government can’t give it to you, then you won’t ask for it. Now, imagine how scary the world would be if the government wasn’t there to help? This is what the final episode will look at, and how would a world like that look What the core classical liberalism models are based on If you want to get into contact with us, you can do so on the contact page here.

This week at In The Past Lane, the American history podcast, I speak with documentary filmmaker, Michelle Ferrari, writer and producer of “The Eugenics Crusade,” which airs on PBS’s American Experience series on October 16, 2018. These days, eugenics is a discredited pseudoscience, one associated with deeply racist ideas and social policies, and the genocidal, master race ideology of Nazi Germany. But back in the early 20th century, eugenics was viewed by many Americans as a respectable, legitimate branch a biological science – one that had great potential for human betterment. In its most basic definition, eugenics was a program that aimed to improve the overall physical and mental health of society by controlling human reproduction. In a word, its proponents sought to limit or stop altogether people they deemed “unfit” from having children. Part of what made eugenics so alluring was its aura of science and rationality. No one at the time knew that eugenics would one day become a key plank in the diabolical creed of Nazism. In the early 20th century, the Progressive Era, Americans placed great faith and science, data, and experts to solve social problems. So when proponents of eugenics claimed it could help eliminate poverty, disease, alcoholism, mental illness, imbecility, and feeblemindedness, they garnered legions of followers. These included some very famous and influential people, including Andrew Carnegie and Margaret Sanger. Sanger, of course, was the reformer who fought for women’s rights and the legalization of birth control. But because she was a reformer, she was drawn to eugenics. Now, it’s important to point out that if you Google “Margaret Sanger and eugenics,” your search will turn up a lot of fake quotes attributed to her, or quotes by other people misattributed to her, most of them propagate by modern day opponents of abortion. They see Margaret Sanger as the patron saint of abortion. But those false claims cannot hide the fact that the historical record include statements by Margaret Sanger such as these: In a 1921 article, Sanger wrote that, “the most urgent problem of today is how to limit and discourage the over fertility of the mentally and physically defective.” In a later publication, she wrote: “Eugenics aims to arouse the enthusiasm or the interest of the people in the welfare of the world fifteen or twenty generations in the future. On its negative side it shows us that we are paying for and even submitting to the dictates of an ever increasing, unceasingly spawning class of human beings who never should have been born at all –– that the wealth of individuals and of states is being diverted from the development and the progress of human expression and civilization.” As you’ll hear Michelle Ferrari say in our upcoming conversation, the story of the eugenics crusade is a cautionary tale if there ever was one. In the course of our discussion, Michelle Ferrari explains: The British origins of eugenics and how the ideas caught on in the United States. How the late 19th century rediscovery of research into heredity by an Augustinian friar named Gregor Mendel inspired eugenicists. How eugenics was seized upon by nativists who ultimately succeeded in achieving a sharp reduction in immigration in the 1920s. How proponents of eugenics popularized its ideas through publications, conferences, college courses, and “fitter families“ contests at county fairs. How the popularity of eugenics led 32 states to adopt policies that resulted the sterilizing of tens of thousands of Americans for being poor, sick, mentally ill, cognitively impaired, sexually deviant, or imprisoned. And how the work of American eugenicists caught the attention of the architects of the Nazi regime in the 1930s.  Recommended reading:  Michelle Ferrari, “The Eugenics Crusade: What’s Wrong with Perfect?” PBS American Experience DVD.  Alison Bashford  and Philippa Levine eds., The Oxford Handbook of the History of Eugenics Edwin Black, War Against the Weak: Eugenics and America's Campaign to Create a Master Race Adam Cohen, Imbeciles: The Supreme Court, American Eugenics, and the Sterilization of Carrie Buck Thomas C.
