Holy Family - Luke 2:22-40 Marian is married to Michael and has three children and three grandchildren. She is a cradle Anglican whose call to ordained ministry, is associated with her study of Paul's letters. Marian was a founding member and coordinator of MOW Brisbane and was very engaged in the struggle to change the Anglican church's attitude towards the ordination of women. Marian has BA (Psychology) a Dip. Ed (Primary) and a Phd (New Testament). It was when she was a Community Worker in Christchurch New Zealand, that she experienced a growing sense that she was called to respond to the spiritual needs of the community. From that, emerged a vocation to the priesthood. Marian was ordained priest in Brisbane in 1995, in the third group of women to be ordained in this Diocese. She has served in three Parishes – Rosewood, Toowong and Hamilton - and has held many Diocesan and National positions. Having a Phd has meant that she has also been able to pursue her love of teaching and has taught for over 20 years at St Francis Theological College – the Letters of Paul, Anglican Liturgy, Introduction to the New Testament, The Synoptics and the Johannine Literature. Now retired from Parish ministry, Marian continues to serve in her local parish and on the Cathedral chapter. Retirement projects include gardening (fruit and vegetables), sewing, learning Italian and minding the grandchildren.

Trust this path that you are on it is leading you to your everyday ordinary as extraordinary. Only YOU have the power to control this very moment of this very day. And it starts with a little of this! Here is what we are going to work on to shift that perspective and be in this moment of your life: · Be more present. · Make more time for friends and loved ones. · Do more outdoor activities. · Do more activities that feed your soul and bring you joy. · Have more grace for yourself and others. · Be a better listener. · Be smarter by reading. · Be more successful at following your heart. · Practice is fun and practice makes better. · Practice self-care. · Practice having a home filled with beautiful memories and things that make you think of those beautiful memories, the memories that bloom from the trials and tribulations of your daily life. Make some notes about all these points. For example, to be more present I have allotted time to be on my phone and allotted time for one-on-one with my children. ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ If you'd like a way to support us hit "like and subscribe". Elle Nagy was living in a foreign country with small children when she found herself slipping into depression. Several years later, and on the on the brink of suicide, Elle asked the Universe for a sign, which it sent in the form of a kickboxing dojo she had never noticed before. She started that day and the sheer physical exertion of kickboxing lifted her years long depression in mere weeks. And then she became hungry for life. She competed in her first Ironman at age 41 and is known today as the Fear Maven after an encounter with a voice in her head during that race. Guest Bio Elle Nagy is the only self-leadership expert who utilizes an innovative, ground-breaking model for pioneering women around the world who want to stop fearing fear in an age where so many are expending energy around fear instead of legacy. Known as The Fear Maven, she's been selectively working with business leaders described as inclusive, humanitarian, disruptive and energetic. Her work spans 3 decades with professional qualification including BA Psychology, ILS Coaching, Pranic Psychotherapy, Yoga teaching and Personal Training bringing a truly holistic approach to embodiment of greatness potential. In addition to her love for her profession, she's relished the physical exploration of her own potential by participating in numerous cycling races, IronMan events and the illustrious SkyRun. Originally from South Africa, Elle now lives in New Zealand and as always obsesses in all things celebrating the gift of human life today, every day. Early Life was So EasyElle Nagy was a good girl growing up in South Africa. She got good grades and did all the things that made her parents proud - but not enough to make other people feel bad about themselves. Her childhood was typical and she says she was a little weird, but she always wondered if the stork dropped her off at the right house. She was told she was too loud, too different, “too” many things. So she worked hard, got all A's in school, earned awards and achieved things, but never felt good enough. She says achievement became such a part of her operating system that it was the only thing she knew. It did set her up to do well in adult society…until it didn't. Through her 20s she found life to be easy. She got a job, got promotions, and got a degree. She felt confident and unstoppable. Then, she got pregnant and her world changed. In Afrikaans culture, the next step is marriage, so she married her childhood sweetheart and became a mom - something she never thought she wanted to be. When her second baby was six weeks old, the family moved to Ireland. Elle remembers her 30th birthday: it was pouring rain and she was sitting in a maroon-painted room crying. She remembers thinking she had no idea who she was. She knew she was a wife, a mom and a daughter, but she had no idea who she was on her own, which sent her spiraling down into depression. After several years of being depressed, she became suicidal. She found it difficult to reach out for help. In her family, these things weren't spoken of. One time, she told her mother she thought something was wrong and she thought she was depressed. Her mother told her “women in our family don't get depressed.” So Elle thought, oops, sorry, and carried on. Her family eventually moved back to South Africa and Elle didn't feel like she was coping well, with the moves, with her kids, with the deaths of several family members. She remembers sitting in the bathroom one day with a bottle of sleeping pills thinking, “this is it. I'm done.” Then she heard her kids' voices and realized that the pills might be an easy out for her, but not for her kids. So she made a doctor's appointment. She told the doctor, “if you don't help me today, I will not see my children tonight.” She was diagnosed and put on antidepressants and sent to therapy. It sucked and she hated it. She hated the antidepressant. She didn't want to kill...
Kids who have had trouble in the past don't always get a fair shake. They've shoplifted or been in other trouble with the law so the community writes them off as “bad news” or “a lost cause.” But really, the challenge is likely that they just haven't had the resources and support they need to be successful. That's where people like Tina Clem and the Calgary Youth Justice Society (CYJS) come in. Tina has worked with youth in many capacities, from residential care to early intervention to sexuality education in high schools. But after her son was born, she wanted to shift her energies. Tina has always had hope for youth and their success, but in the last 10 years, she's come to believe that hope must be paired with purposeful and thoughtful action. With CYJS, Tina works with community volunteers to support youth that have been in the court system, helping them to see hope in their own lives. Together, CYJS and Tina equip young people with language around strengths so they can begin to develop their leadership skills and potential.I love the mindset that while the youth Tina works with may have had troubled pasts, they possess strengths that can help turn their lives around. Listen in for more!About Tina Clem:Tina proudly calls herself a youth worker by trade and at heart with over 25 years experience working with vulnerable youth that includes residential treatment, positive youth development and prevention programming, comprehensive sexuality education and formal mentoring programming. She strives to combine direct service delivery experience with a solid understanding of youth development theories, frameworks and research when developing and delivering quality programming for youth. As the current Program Director at Calgary Youth Justice Society, Tina leads and supports a team of passionate high performers to deliver quality strengths based programming and drives strategic change for the organization through innovation, quality and expanding the reach of our programming. What is the brutal truth about being an only child?Joanne Friedman, BA Psychology, MEd Special Education, Farmer, Teacher, Horseman, Writer, OMG I'm old!As mother to an “only” (by choice and also by Fortune), I've heard her complaints. Her biggest complaint, which only arose lately as she turned 40, has been that she believes she's expected to care for all of her parents, both blood and in-law, by herself, which is overwhelming. No matter how often we assure her that none of us expects her to spend her adult life as our caretaker and that we've all made significant other plans for our care, she feels that weight. Only time will remove it.The other negative became evident when she was a mid-teen and her father and I, who had divorced when she was young but remained co-parents, both found other partners who also had family members (as most people do, after all). I can well recall her having a flat-out hissy fit one holiday when I invited her to join me and my partner's family for an event. It wasn't about not liking my partner or her stepmother or the event in question. It was about feeling overwhelmed. She yelled, “I have too much family already! There's you and your family and Dad and his whole family, and now there's two more whole families and I can't stand it!” She dug in her heels and firmly refused to include any further people. Period. Hard stop. Until then, she'd been able to choose her “family” from the cadre of friends with whom she surrounded herself. Suddenly the choice was no longer hers alone to make and it rankled badly. That stance continued until she was in her mid-20's. Having grown up as an only, she did not relish trying to accommodate so many other people in her life, but life has a way of ignoring our desires. At 27, she married into a very large family, and suddenly, despite adding some 15 or so more hearts to her cache, she began to be less irritated and more welcoming. Now her home constantly vibrates with the sound of visiting family members and she loves it as much as she thought she hated the very idea. That's the “brutal truth”. At some point, onlies have to accept that there is room inside them for more love and caring than they grew up expecting. What is the brutal truth about being an only child?Joanne Friedman, BA Psychology, MEd Special Education, Farmer, Teacher, Horseman, Writer, OMG I'm old!As mother to an “only” (by choice and also by Fortune), I've heard her complaints. However, Mindfulness if the act of focusing our attention to something in particular, with intent, non judgment and simply noticing what arises from moment to moment. Research in Mindfulness has proven to improve life in various areas Helps relieve stress teaching us how to relate in a different way with stressful events Leads us to enjoy life as it occurs giving us a greater capacity to face adverse events We become less concerned about low self esteem Lowers blood pressure Reduced chronic pain Improves sleep Helps in depression Management of substance abuse Eating disorders Anxiety disorders Obsessive compulsive disorder Some experts believe that mindfulness works, in part, by helping people to accept their experiences—including painful emotions—rather than react to them with aversion and avoidance. Guest: Antonio Sausys, BA Psychology, MA Somatic Psychotherapy Yoga Therapist, TV Host specializes in one-on-one yoga therapy for people with chronic and acute medical conditions as well as emotional imbalance. Founder-director Yoga for Health (International Yoga Therapy Conference: www.yogatherapyconference.com, Author: http://www.amazon.com/Yoga-Grief-Relief-Practices-Transforming/dp/1608828182 www.yogaforgriefrelief.com With her guest Antonio, Karen will unravel grief and how it can be a path towards self-knowledge and transformation. Grief is not always about death. We all have experience with grief, from faded youth to failed love to the loss of a job or valued material possession. And far from being strictly emotional, grief can express itself in a variety of physical forms such as poor posture, insomnia, lack of energy, shortness of breath, even actual physical pain. Antonio learned from his teacher and mentor Lyn Prashant, that we dont get over our losses, we transform our relationship to them. He believes that grief is a potent source of self knowledge. Then, there is a natural progression from one to the other: if we are able to transform our relationship to grief in a way that results in improved self-knowledge, then we can establish a new identity. We identify ourselves through the persons and things we are attached to; when we lose them, we lose part of who we are. Yet we continue being, only in a way that is not known to us. The process of finding our new self is multi-layered. It involves understanding and dealing with the physical symptoms of grief; actually completing the grieving process; and re-identifying our selves, not based on preconceived or relearned notions but instead on our true essence, the one weve come so much closer to thanks to having been stripped of our previous identity. http://www.ih4y.com/
