Mentoring relationships supported by Big Brother Big Sisters of Metro Milwaukee can end up being some of the most meaningful relationships in participants' lives. So, when someone's Little Brother or Sister ages out of the program, it can be a minute before they're ready to jump back in and volunteer again. But many former Bigs still want to find other ways to stay engaged with BBBS. So in this episode of Little Big Chats, Dusty speaks with Matt, an alumni big brother and board member of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Milwaukee. They discuss the journey of being a big brother and the importance of staying engaged with the organization even after formal mentorship ends. Matt shares his personal experiences, and together, they talk about other opportunities for former Bigs to continue to support the BBBS mission.

In this week's episode, our hosts sit down with the talented actor, Travis Van Winkle, who also happens to be one of Justin and Jamey's closest friends. They dive into a wide-ranging discussion covering dating, overcoming trauma, friendship insecurities, alcohol, the Roman Empire trend, and the art of embracing life's imperfect timing. Its Super Bowl week and Mike Faunce joins Sports ‘n Torts. Originally from New Jersey, Mike moved down to Georgia 25 years ago to play college baseball. However, his roots and teams he cheers for remain up North – namely, the PhiladelphiaEagles and Philadelphia Phillies. Mike talks about seeing the Eagles win their first Super Bowl in franchise history in 2017 in Minneapolis and what that meant to his community and family. We fast forward to Mike being in Philadelphia with his dad for the playoff game a few weeks ago against the Giants and being back in this year's Super Bowl. Mike breaks down the key matchups in the game and gives his predictions on what will happen. We go through an assortment of prop bets (for example o/u the national anthem being 2 minutes and 5 seconds), discuss the half time show and memorable commercials. Basically soup to nuts about the “Big Game”. Though he does not fit the stereotype, Mike explains why “Philly fans” have the reputation that they do. On the them of Philadelphia, we of course do some Bryce Harper and Trea Turner talk.As stated, Mike played college baseball as a pitcher. We talk about the current state of youth baseball and his advice to us dads out there on best practices for our kids. We talk arm care, throwing curve balls, playing multiple sports and focusing on development. A must listen for anyone with kids who are playing youth baseball. Mike also has the best bourbon collection of anyone I have ever seen. An owner of 700+ bottles, he talks about how he first got into collecting, his reasons for collecting and the joy it provides him. Finally, we talk about Mike's involvement with the Big Brother Big Sisters of Metro Atlanta Program. Mike has been a Big Brother to Jaylen since he was 5 years old. He is now 20 and they remain as close as ever. It is a truly remarkable program and Mike was recognized a few years ago as the “Atlanta Big Brother Of the Year”. Ignite Your Purpose (ft. John O'Leary)How John O'Leary went from out of the fire into the hearts of millionsOPENING QUOTE:“Jack taught me four things, real quick: say yes, show up, come back, bring friends. And that's what I want to do. We want to change the world one life at a time, starting with yours.”—John O'LearyGUEST BIO:John O'Leary is a two-time national bestselling author and world-renowned thought leader who, in 1987, was burned by a massive explosion in his home that left burns on 100% of his body. He was given less than a 1% chance to live. Today, John hosts the Live Inspired Podcast, which has more than 2.5 million downloads, and speaks to over 50,000 people every single year.Links:WebsiteFacebookLinkedInInstagramTwitterYoutubeCORE TOPICS + DETAILS:[2:10] - Being Awake vs. Feeling AliveThe moment John came to life was long after the fireFor two decades after the fire, John felt lost and directionless. Then he began to consider his talents, and how they could be used to create a life of purpose regardless of what had come before. Today, John speaks powerfully on the difference between simply being awake and feeling alive. We should all seek a life that makes us feel alive every day.[14:36] - A Ladder On the Wrong WallWhy relentless drive is nothing without purposeJohn describes a conversation he had with someone who obtained every material success, before succumbing to addiction and losing it all. The way he puts it, he had reached the top of the ladder— but the ladder was leaning up against the wrong wall. What are the ladders in our lives? Are we sure we're climbing toward a destination that's worth reaching?[21:28] - The Heroes That Make UsYou don't have to make yourself the protagonist in your storyIn the speaking industry where both Paul and John have made a career, it's easy for some speakers to slip into self-aggrandizing stories of their own achievements. But both our host and our guest prefer to focus on the impact of those who have touched their lives— after all, we are made by the people who shape us.[38:09] - The Power of EmpathyLove and grace through pain and sufferingAfter the fire that burned 100% of John's body and destroyed his parents home, John expected his father to be furious. Instead, he expressed how proud he was of John for getting through this tremendous trial. John never forgot the lesson in this experience— that a little empathy toward the people we love can transform their lives and our own.RESOURCES:[1:21] On Fire and In Awe, by John O'Leary[9:07] Live Inspired Podcast[18:47] Suicide Statistics in the U.S.[28:06] Big Brother Big SisterFollow John:WebsiteFacebookLinkedInInstagramTwitterYoutubeFollow Paul:Keynote Speaking WebsitePlaymakers PodcastThe Power of Playing OffenseLinkedInFacebookTwitterInstagramYoutubeSHOW PARTNER:The WHY InstituteAre you ready to find your ‘why'? The actual quote she was looking for from this article was "“Men apply for a job when they meet only 60% of the qualifications, but women apply only if they meet 100% of them.” and the program to volunteer with Kids who suffer immediate family loss from Cancer similar to their mentors was Walk With Sally. Mel volunteers with Big Brother Big Sister. Books recommended by Alex include The Psychology of Money, The 10% entrepreneur as well as The Fear of Missing Out by her friend Patrick McGinnis, The Artist's Way. Jenny Mischel and Jessica Elliot are both professionals working to improve the situation with bullying. Jenny comes at this problem through academia. She holds a PHD in Educational Psychology and works as a development coordinator and facilitator with Payton's Project and is a visiting assistant professor at Oxford College at Emory University. Jessica is in the trenches as a school counselor at Fairfax County Public Schools and also works with Jenny and Payton's Project to tackle this dire topic. With US Hospital Admissions for non fatal self harm for young girls age 10-14 is up 189% and 62% for Girls aged 15-19, Nearly triple what it was in 2009 and Suicide rates for yougn girls age 10-14 are up 151% and gor girls aged 15-19 is up 70% compared to an average from 2001-2011. (Information taken from The Social Dilemma sourced from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). These numbers are terrifying. This data is linked to the onset of constant usage of social media. So with this issue, our girls need us. The time is now to contribute to the solution. You can spread this information, mentor, join a cause like Big Brother Big Sister and then volunteer in schools, or even become a researcher or fundraiser/investor to companies and schools combatting the war on bullying and premature death of children victimized by social dysfunctions. Mel's experience with bullying as a pre-teen and teenager seemed to set off a vicious cycle for her. One that led her to being further bullied in front of millions of people by the producers of America's Next Top Model. The producers actually told her that past contestants who fought against their edits, like Jade, were ridiculed by the media, and that she should simply "just take it.". But Mel has always fought back against her edit on the show stating that she was served a character portrayal that had lasting public ramifications and mental health damages to her for over a decade. This candid conversation between the 3 ladies is the first time Mel opens up about all of her bullying past and how she has overcome this into a life of happiness and purpose. Jessica, who had a background in fashion as well, quickly realized the truths about the fashion industry and stepped into counseling instead. Jenny also had been bullied as a child. These 3 women courageously share their knowledge, research, and experiences and hopefully shed some light on bullying and cyberbullying today. Enjoy and please feel free to reach out to any of the women for additional comments, contributions, or volunteering opportunities. Much more to come from this magical trio!
