In this episode, we hear from KEXP's queen of psychedelia and host of Astral Plane, DJ Jewel. She shares the mellow yet mind-bending tracks that have been easing her into shorter and darker days. She also talks with Isabel about the way psych music bends time, how you can find ego death in a good jam session, and the krautrock roots of much of the psychedelia that's popular today. Music Director Chris Sanley then shares a song that's been bringing her a sense of calm amidst chaos. Songs featured: Nice Biscuit - “SOS” Nolan Potter - “Dig Me As I Am” Black Moth Super Rainbow - “All 2 Of Us”  Amon Duul - “Snow Your Thirst and Sun Your Open Mouth”  Haley Heynderickx - “Seed of a Seed”  Listen to the full songs on KEXP's "In Our Headphones 2024" playlist on Spotify or the “What's In Our Headphones” playlist on YouTube. Photo credit ~  Deb Frazin 2023 On this episode I chat with Mike Watt - what a great guy, a Punk Rock Bass player legend. Mike is a true cultural omnivore, exhibiting an insatiable appetite for diverse musical experiences. This profound openness and eagerness to explore new sounds is evident as he continues to engage in numerous projects, and captivating live performances. Mike's bio seems almost as thick as a bible, you can read the full bio/discog, on his website link below. here is a quick overview - Mike...played with the Minutemen from 1981-1985, recording 4 albums and 8 EPs. fIREHOSE trio (1986-1994). Mike toured with "Iggy and the Stooges" and many other well-know musicians and band. In fact his collaborations span a wide spectrum of artists, ranging from the avant-garde Yoko Ono to the enigmatic Black Moth Super Rainbow, and from the soulful Petra Haden to the pop sensation Kelly Clarkson. Through these varied partnerships, Watt's voracious musical curiosity and adaptability shine brightly, establishing him as an artist unbound by stylistic limitations. Mike lives in San Pedro, Los Angles, and we have a lunch date when I'm next over the mountains from my home in Las Vegas. This week on "Hot Takes", we were visited by Luxury Elite! Vaporwave OG and the person that coined that genre name "late night lo-fi", Lux was a shoo-in for the show, and having her join us paid off tenfold as we covered topics like nostalgia for late night TV programming, her experience with vaporwave over the years, and her love of tapes and URL shows. Having gotten her start as early as 2011 via Turntable and Black Moth Super Rainbow fanclubs, Lux eventually started the wildly successful and seminal vaporwave label Fortune 500 and has gone on to host countless radio shows like Neon Nights and Lux Visions. As a diehard fan and historian, her involvement in the birth and growth of the scene has been undeniable, so we had to make sure she was given the time and space to tell her tales! The live chat ran wild as we jumped from topic to topic, discussing innovation regarding dreampunk, early music videos and curation within the young scene, and Lux's love of Hoobastank. We got to hear Lux address multitudinous questions regarding anonymity as an artist, her production techniques, and the importance of SPF420 in the early internet music livestream realm. If anything, tune in to hear Lux shout out her top three Fortune 500 releases, hear her tell the broperwave story, and experience the geekout session that transpired between Skelly, Shiro, and Lux over early vaporwave curator Mr Nonsense. Rewatch it now if you didn't get to be there, and be sure to subscribe and tune in next time!   "Hot Takes" is a safe space for all opinions! Join the conversation at https://linktr.ee/hottakesvapor

This week we are revisiting our conversation with musician Tom Fec, better known by his stage name, Tobacco. His latest album, Hot Wet & Sassy comes out at the end of October. Tom joined Jesse last year to talk about his musical influences, his creative process, and why he rejects the label of psychedelic rock. Plus he tells us why you'll occasionally find him and his bandmates in Black Moth Super Rainbow performing concerts in masks.

Bullseye with Jesse Thorn

Tobacco is the nom de guerre of electronic musician and composer Tom Fec. Tom also founded the music collective Black Moth Super Rainbow. In both projects, the music he makes is rich and layered, but kind of dirty and unsettling, sometimes, too. He works with a lot of vintage synthesizers and records on older equipment. On this episode, he talks with Jesse about his history in music - from noodling around with synths and guitars and a four track to working with Aesop Rock on his latest project - called Malibu Ken. He'll also explain why he avoided interviews and stayed anonymous for so long, and why that changed.

TRUE STORY: this episode of Random Old Records was supposed to come out back in April. I had an entire hour mapped out, made a test-mix, and immediately hated it. So, I trashed the entire thing, sat on it awhile, made a few changes, still hated it, started from scratch and hated THAT one too, then heard the new album from Terry and found the perfect song to really make it sing. Now, it's nearly October and EPISODE #59 is finally ready for your listening pleasure! It all kicks off with a series of songs straight out of the late '60s rock underground, featuring flashy horn arrangements, jazzy textures, and blasts of instrumental virtuosity. Deathly cold open: Just found out the morning of the show that Jerry Jr., a Cameroonian friend I knew from the Comox Valley, had died, so I wanted to launch it off with a tribute... This is the week we previewed both Otalith Music Festival and Atmosphere Gathering -- two rapidly growing weekenders that have been making a name for Vancouver Island amongst two very different musical communities. [34:46] We start out by reconnecting with Mount Eliah (mteliah.com) who ended up sharing a plane seat with us on Episode 13 of the podcast (https://soundcloud.com/frequencyhorizon/episode-13-ferry-falters-podcast-in-the-sky-surf-echolocation). He gives us the ins-and-outs of the plans for the big top and beyond. [1:02:40] Sound guy Johnny Wafflez gives us a behind-the-scenes look at the frequency theory behind setting up for an electronic music-heavy festival like Atmosphere (https://www.atmospheregathering.com/). Plus, we talk about what's on the bill for indie/hip hop/surf rock music fest Otalith Music Festival (otalithfestival.com/) in Ucluelet, which we cover more in depth in the following episode. Music in the episode from: JPod @jpodabides, Black Moth Super Rainbow, Fidlar @fidlar, Shakey Graves (@shakey-graves-official), Bon Iver (@boniverofficial)

Her new show, Lady Dynamite will be available for streaming on Netflix from May 20th. You can find out more about her upcoming tour dates by visiting her website at mariabamford.com. Later, Wanda Sykes joined Jesse to talk about transitioning from a career with the NSA to stand-up comedy, coming out "accidentally" during a rally against California's Proposition 8 and why she believes that Bob Hope could have been the perfect super spy. Wanda Sykes is beginning her tour this month, which includes recording dates for her next comedy special. Find out more by visiting her website at wandasykes.com. Summer, summer, summertime! I threw this one together at the last minute, but I think I did a pretty good job of capturing the mood of this lazy, hazy, hot July. Random Old Records Podcast #33 drifts by in a dreamy blur of psychedelic moods, shimmering reverb guitar, and loping dance beats, with a mix of new and old tracks. If you're one of those people who are melting in this punishing 100+ degree heatwave rocking the midwest, and just want to sit around in a dark room getting lifted all day, this is the podcast for you!Episode #33 kicks off with the all-time classic opening medley from the debut LP by The Soft Machine, a towering groove filled with stunning drums from Robert Wyatt, screeching organs, and slow-burning instrumental fury, and goes into some screaming garage psych from The Night Beats and Thee Oh Sees, then a Brit-psych style workout from The Paperhead, who put out one of the best LPs of the year on Trouble In Mind a few months back. I've been raving about them ever since, and now I'm SUPER-PUMPED that they're playing a free show at one of the best new venues in Cincinnati, MOTR Pub, on July 27th. If you're anywhere close, come check it out! Also, check out the perfect lo-fi 60s psych vibe of Jeffrey Novak on this episode of Random Old Records. He just so happens to be the producer of The Paperhead LP, and will be guesting on keyboards on their tour. Sweet deal!Elsewhere, you'll hear dreamy electronic-psych tracks from Washed Out, Hype Williams, and Black Moth Super Rainbow, and more chill jams from the likes of Pure X (AWESOME new LP), Seapony, Sic Alps, White Fence, Blouse, and Kelley Stoltz. There's classic tracks from The Kinks and Matching Mole, plus a few more surprises to round things out. Hopefully y'all dig it! There's some of my favorite songs of the year on this thing, so check it out and let me know what you think. Enjoy your summer, folks!Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to Random Old Records via Apple Podcasts, Google Play, or RSS. If you like the show, please rate it and write a review!
