What if the fear of change is just a sign of how much it matters? Caterine has gone 27 days without alcohol, which is the longest she's ever gone in the past 20 years. With all the extra free time, she's unsure how to fill her days. She feels she should be doing more but the fear of failure has held her back. Belinda, who has also had a long relationship with alcohol, believes her meals are incomplete without a drink, which makes her avoid eating out. Coach Ruby encourages Caterine to practice being kind to herself, reminding her that it's okay to try new things at her own pace. She also helps Belinda build the confidence to say no to alcohol when it's offered and start thinking about alcohol in a healthier way.
This week, we have Steve Carcarey co-owner of Collegeville Italian Bakery Pizzeria Napoletana in Collegeville, Pennsylvania. Collegeville first opened as a bakery. Steve and his wife Patrizia took over the business from her parents. Since then, the couple has added on a dining room, full menu, catering and a thriving packaged goods business.According to its “About Us”, Patrizia says, “My family is from Nusco, Italy in la Campagnia (mountain region) south of Rome. In 1970, my parents, Giovanni and Caterine moved to America. 24 years later they started Collegeville Italian Bakery and have been baking fresh bread from scratch ever since. My husband, Steve, and I are happy to run our retail store and carry on all of our family traditions. With its slogan “we're more than just a bakery!”, the couple have worked to create a diversified business. In a previous Conversation with Pizza Today, Steve said, “When they hear, “bakery,” most people instinctively think sweets — cakes, pastries, cookies, etc. While we offer all of those items, there's so much more to our business. We have such a rich history, authentic culture and unique offerings that we want people to know about, so it's just getting past those initial assumptions to show customers what we're all about.Collegeville has captured a diverse market in its small college town. What if 'fairies' are a memory of a squat race of mysterious pre-humans who lived in Europe before modern humans arrived? Justin Mullis brings a LOT to the cabin in this episode. We cover: the origins of euhemerism and 'explanations' for Norse gods. Bernard Heuvelmans and euhemerism, our first (but not last!) connection to cryptozoology. Early famous supporters of a mystery race include Sir Walter Scott! Euhemerism used to explain troll legends in Sweden. Disenchantment and the changing attitudes towards folklore in the 19th century. David MacRitchie and the idea of the mystery fairy race. Encounters with African pygmies giving confirmation to this idea later in the 19th century. Connections to fantastic Victorian literature. Our boy Sabine Baring-Gould claiming the fairy race still exists. H. G. Wells' use of the trope. Madison Grant and the Passing Of The Great Race. E. F. Benson and (my favourite) The Horror Horn. And finally a deep-dive into the use of this trope by the heavy-hitters Arthur Machen, Lovecraft and Robert E Howard. The Hobbit, Homo floresiensis, and more connections to modern cryptozoology. You won't want to miss this one! A Senior Professor of Practice in Classical Studies at Tulane University, Dr. Mallory Monaco Caterine loves to help learners find connections between the past, the present, the self, and the human community. She believes that a humanities education is a highly effective mode of leadership training and infuses opportunities to practice leadership into all of her classes, including Greek and Latin language, Greek culture, Ancient Medicine, and the Classical Leadership Lab. She earned her Ph.D. in Classics at Princeton University, where she explored Plutarch's Lives of Hellenistic statesmen and the lessons they held for his contemporaries in 2nd century CE Roman Greece. Her recent research focuses on the representations of tyrants and women's leadership in Greek and Roman literature. In addition to her work at Tulane, Mallory is also the co-founder and co-executive director of Kallion Leadership, Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to comprehensive and inclusive leadership development through the study of the humanities both inside and outside higher education. Her work with Kallion has been supported by her position as the Greenberg Family Professor in Social Entrepreneurship and Cole Fellow at the Phyllis M. Taylor Center for Social Innovation and Design Thinking. A Yankee by birth, she spends each day falling more in love with her adopted home of New Orleans, where she lives with her husband, son, and cat, Lil Easy. Two Quotes From This Episode"It was shocking to read the news and see so many of the things I've been studying in these texts coming to life in front of my very eyes. And I think this is when I really moved from working on Plutarch to working with Plutarch.""I've always tried to figure out this question of how do we learn from other people's experiences? For this week's episode of Crossing Borders, we're revisiting one of our greatest hits episodes featuring Caterine Castillo, CEO and co-founder of Neivor. In Latin America, a building manager typically has to handle thousands of apartment units and tenants. This means simultaneously dealing with building maintenance, reconciling payments, and meeting tenant and landlord requests. Currently, this is done manually with pen and paper, maybe an Excel spreadsheet or through WhatsApp which leads to inefficiencies and unhappy residents. Caterine Castillo, Neivor's co-founder and CEO, is trying to make living in Latin America's apartment buildings and condos better. Neivor is a vertical SaaS platform that simplifies condo fee collections and streamlines management and communication between residents, property owners, and building managers. Neivor processes tens of millions of payments per month and help manage 3000+ apartment buildings in Mexico, Colombia, and Ecuador.I sat down with Caterine to talk about the pain points of property management in Latin America and the differences in Neivor's reception between the Colombian and Mexican markets. We also talk about her experience in finance before becoming a founder and what it was like fundraising for the first time.Growing Neivor's teamOne of the biggest lessons Caterine learned from working at corporations was managing large teams. These skills are extremely critical in Neivor's roadmap with a team that is currently growing from 18 employees to 75 in under a year. Caterine also explained that hiring won't solve a company's problems immediately. It's important to understand that people are managing a big learning curve when they join a new team. Listen to this episode of Crossing Borders to learn more about Caterine's main takeaways from her experience working in corporations. The importance of connections in VCCaterine's first fundraising experience was with Neivor.
