Before Charles Randolph won an Oscar for his adaptation of “The Big Short”, he took a swing at a thornier adaptation, a memoir called “The Birthday Party.” It's the true story of a white man kidnapped by three young Black men. In his adaptation, Randolph chose not to write the action movie that producers had in mind, but to focus on the racial dynamics at play. And Hollywood wasn't having it.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Our guest today is a filmmaker responsible for some of the great comedies of our time, and someone whose storytelling has undergone a fascinating transformation as the world has slipped into climate emergency, economic emergency and political disrepair. Somehow, in a time with dwindling things to laugh about, this writer-director has found a way to engage with those crises in ludicrously entertaining ways. He's the filmmaker behind Anchorman, Step Brothers, Talladega Nights, The Other Guys, The Big Short, Vice and Don't Look Up – it's Adam McKay! Adam got his break on Saturday Night Live, becoming the show's head writer in 1996. His collaborations on SNL with another emerging comic, Will Ferrell, immediately caught the eye and simply could not be contained to the small screen for long. By the early ‘00s, the pair had turned their anarchic chemistry into a wave of outrageously quotable comedies that fast found themselves woven into our shared pop culture landscape. “It escalated quickly,” as Ron Burgundy might say. Then came a change of pace. In 2015, after his father lost his home as part of a devastating economic downturn, Adam released The Big Short – a white collar crime comedy about the 2007 financial crash. It won him and his co-writer Charles Randolph the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar at that year's Academy Awards, and signalled a sea change not just in the content of Adam's movies going forward, but also in the cinematic language he was using to tell his stories. His films since then – and to a lesser degree, titles he's worked on as a producer, such as the smash hit Succession – have doubled down on that new storytelling style, full of frantic edits and experimental flourishes.Adam's monumental success has come in the face of a couple of challenging moments medically across his life. In 2000, he was diagnosed with a condition known as essential tremor, and in 2017, he suffered a heart attack on the set of Vice. In the conversation you're about to hear, we discuss how that heart attack sharpened his resolve to make 2021's bracing Don't Look Up. We get into why Step Brothers is a film that “tells you all you need to know about America” – a nation in which “consumer culture has turned us into children,” Adam insists. You'll hear why he decided to abandon the three-act structure of his old films in part as a response to the rise of Donald Trump and what he's learned about to fix the world from his recent string of movies grappling with its many problems. The Entertainment Community Fund do extraordinary work lifting up storytellers of all descriptions, and have been a vital support for entertainment industry workers affected by this summer's strike action. Geri Cole turns it over to David O. Russell for a conversation with Adam McKay about his latest project, DON'T LOOK UP. David O. Russell is the Oscar- and Writers Guild Award-nominated writer and director best known for his work on titles like FLIRTING WITH DISASTER, THREE KINGS, I HEART HUCKABEES, SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK, AMERICAN HUSTLE, and most recently, JOY. Adam McKay is a writer, director, comedian, and co-founder of the comedy group Upright Citizens Brigade. He kicked off his film & TV career in the '90s as a head writer for SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE before rising to fame in the 2000s for his collaborations with fellow comedian and SNL alum Will Ferrell, with whom he co-wrote the hit comedies ANCHORMAN, STEP BROTHERS, and THE OTHER GUYS. In the 2010s, McKay ventured into more dramatic waters as co-writer & director of the 2015 dramedy/biopic THE BIG SHORT—for which he and Charles Randolph received the Academy and Writers Guild Awards for Adapted Screenplay—and as writer & director of the 2019 Oscar- and Writers Guild Award-nominated Dick Cheney biopic VICE. His most recent project is DON'T LOOK UP, a comedy-drama and cautionary tale written and directed by McKay and based on a story by himself and David Sirota. The film follows two astronomers who discover a comet orbiting within the solar system and which is set on a direct collision course with Earth. The problem? No one really seems to care. Turns out warning mankind about a planet-killer the size of Mount Everest is an inconvenient fact to navigate. The astronomers embark on a media tour that takes them from the office of an indifferent President and her sycophantic son and Chief of Staff to the airwaves of upbeat morning show The Daily Rip. With only six months until the comet makes impact, the team struggles to manage the 24-hour news cycle and gain the attention of the social media-obsessed public—before it's too late. DON'T LOOK UP was released in December 2021 and is available to stream on Netflix. --- Before it was a podcast, OnWriting was a print publication. Check out OnWriting: The Print Archives. Busch Mason speaks briefly about legacy, not just because we learned of the passing of one of The Ark's members, Charles Randolph, about the time the service began this morning. Busch uses that example to ask us what kind of legacy are we leaving that will continue after we are gone from this earth for others. Neal Moody concludes with a few thoughts.

For our last episode of the season, Gavin and Daniel reviewed the 2019 film, Bombshell. We reviewed this movie to ask the question; can we feel sorry for the women of white supremacy?Bombshell is a 2019 American drama film directed by Jay Roach and written by Charles Randolph. The film stars Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman, and Margot Robbie, and is based upon the accounts of the women at Fox News who set out to expose CEO Roger Ailes for sexual harassment. John Lithgow, Kate McKinnon, Connie Britton, Malcolm McDowell, and Allison Janney appear in supporting roles. - Wikipedia
This week on Total Movie Recall, we take a big shit on Boomers and their cheap nostalgia for a “better time.” A time when a bunch of baseball-loving kids' black friend would have had to walk home to his segregated neighborhood. A time of nuclear anxiety because our megalomaniacal leaders were determined to blow up the world. A time when women were openly sexually harassed with no consequences. But hey, wasn't baseball fun? Hi everyone! I can think of a number of bad films for date night, but today’s film just might take the prize. One Movie Spouse and I went to see the film on one of our weekly movie dates, and it was a real buzzkill. Not for the excellent performances, incredible costuming, or insightful storytelling, but for the vile, true story behind Fox News. She’s going to be up in a bit with her thoughts, about the movie itself and the story behind it. I’ll just be over here swearing to no one in particular that Fox News is even still operating. Now, whenever I feel passionate feelings come up, I turn to Aicila and Erik at Bicurean to help me sort things out. Every episode, they explore a different topic, looking for the underlying issues, and finding common ground whenever possible. You can find them on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram @bicurean, or check them out at bicurean.com. Be sure to like, follow, rate, and subscribe! Here we go! ///// > ///// Hello, It’s me Amy, AKA One Movie Spouse, back for another review. MWAH! Listen to my review, then catch me on Twitter @OneMovieSpouse to keep the conversation going. Here we go! Today’s movie is BOMBSHELL(2019), the drama directed by Jay Roach and written for the screen by Charles Randolph. The film sheds light on the sexual harassment scandal at Fox News, involving the exploitation of women by Roger Ailes (John Lithgow), focused on former anchor Megyn Kelly (Charlize Theron), former co-host Gretchen Carlson (Nicole Kidman), and an entry-level aspiring employee named Kayla Pospisil (Margot Robbie). No spoilers. “Bombshell” is filled with an all-star cast including Academy Award® winners Charlize Theron and Nicole Kidman, and Academy Award® nominees John Lithgow and Margot Robbie. This film is based on the real scandal inside the most powerful and controversial media empire of all time, Fox News. The film is an explosive story of the women who brought down the infamous man who helped turn Fox News into a financially successful and socially damaging news channel. I did not know the extent of the scandal at Fox News and was shocked to see it all laid out during this nearly two-hour film. Without giving details beyond what’s revealed in the film trailers, the most powerful and lingering thought I have after seeing the film is the courage and tenacity of these women. They had to endure years of sexual harassment at Fox News, and the impact of taking a stand against it. I was horrified to see what Megyn Kelly, Gretchen Carlson, and Kayla Pospisil had to endure to receive in order to keep their jobs and/or advance their careers. My husband and I have been enjoying “Mad Men”, and at times during BOMBSHELL, I had to stop and remind myself that fifty years later the same shit was still happening in the workplace. This film struck many emotional chords with me: disgust, anger, anxiety, and eventually some relief as their full story came to light. No woman should have to endure what these women did in order to have a career. PERIOD. Casting and makeup was phenomenal in this film! It is remarkable to see the resemblance between Charlize Theron and Megyn Kelly, put their photos side by side, and it’s near impossible to tell who’s who and their similarities are uncanny right down to their mannerisms. Go ahead, Google it quick and then come back if you haven’t already made the comparisons. WOW, right?! And let’s talk about John Lithgow’s makeup and performance for a moment. Roger Ailes (John Lithgow) is a human piece of garbage! There are few times in my life have I hated a man more than this. I felt physical revulsion when he came on screen. BLECH! I don’t want to end this review on a vile note, however. There’s a reason these talented actors were cast in these roles. They tell a powerful, albeit uncomfortable tale. It is my hope to anyone seeing this film that is being harassed or has been exploited at work to have the courage to speak up and receive assistance. There is no shame in sharing your story and asking for assistance. BOMBSHELL is an eye-opening story shedding light on the scandal at Fox News. It tells a powerful tale of three women who had the courage to speak up and make change in this powerful media empire. Rotten Tomatoes: 69% Metacritic: 64 One Movie Punch: 7.0/10 BOMBSHELL (2019) is rated R and is currently playing in theaters.
Adam McKay and Charles Randolph won the Academy Award for best adapted screenplay for "The Big Short". The film was an incredibly accurate portrayal of the events leading to the Global Financial Crisis. However, the film glosses over the Synthetic CDO - the financial instrument that made the housing bubble a global economic crisis. Andrew and Blake take a deep dive in trying to explain how the synthetic CDO worked and how it magnified the housing bubble. We're sure by the end of this episode, you'll want to occupy Wall Street too.
The writer of The Big Short and Bombshell discusses some of his favorite movies that deal with social issues.

Guest: Charles Randoph, screenwriter of Bombshell and Oscar-winner for the 2015 film THE BIG SHORT. Bombshell tells the sensational true story about Fox News CEO Roger Ailes (John Lithgow), and the female news anchors, Gretchen Carlson (Nicole Kidman) and Megyn Kelly (Charlize Theron), who brought Ailes down. This is a story of power, hubris and a toxic culture where abuse was routinely ignored. It's also a story of hope, that a woman can find her voice and courage and that both women and men can find a healthy balance in the work place. Host: Shanee Edwards graduated from UCLA Film School with an MFA in Screenwriting and is currently the film critic for SheKnows.com. She recently won the Next MacGyver television writing competition to create a TV show about a female engineer. Charles Randolph is intrigued with things that frighten him. Complicated, yet unusual subjects with unique internal conflicts make up his films. Amongst these hard hitting character studies, Randolph has credits such as ‘The Life of David Gale,’ ‘The Interpreter,’ ‘Love & Other Drugs,’ ‘The Big Short,’ and now, ‘Bombshell.’ In the latest movie, the story focuses on a group of women who conspired to take down Fox News head Roger Ailes for the toxic atmosphere he created within the conservative network. The film stars Charlize Theron as Megyn Kelly, Nicole Kidman as Gretchen Carlson, John Lithgow as Roger Ailes, and Margot Robbie as the composite character Kayla Pospisil. In this exclusive interview, Randolph discusses modern villains, societal obstacles for character, how he uses a thematic toolkit, a writer’s contract to the audience, balancing real and unusual, and how to make politics entertaining. How can you successfully integrate exposition into your story? In Draft Zero's first two part episode, Stu & Chas take an in-depth look at one of screenwriting's most common challenges: EXPOSITION. For many stories there are pre-existing facts that need to be communicated to the audience — whether those facts be about the rules of the world, the nature of a location, character motivations, character backstories or just character names. So how have great writers made exposition move the story forward, rather than stopping it to tell the audience stuff they need to know? To that end, in Part 1 of Excelling At Exposition we break down scenes from PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL, SHORT TERM 12, INSIDE OUT, THE WORLD'S END, THE BIG SHORT, IT FOLLOWS, JURASSIC PARK and JURASSIC WORLD.
