Michel Foucault is one of the most influential philosophical thinkers of the 20th century. He remains a controversial figure, but undoubtedly he had a profound impact on the way we think about mental health and mental illness up to the present day. In this episode, we take a deep dive into his work, Madness & Civilization: A History of Insanity in the Age of Reason, based on his dissertation. In this work, Foucault charts a history of how madness was perceived and experienced in the western world, exploring the changes in understanding of insanity from the Middles Ages, to the Renaissance, to the Classical period (17th & 18th centuries), to the 19th century creation of the mental asylum, and finally to the foundation of psychoanalysis.

We'll also explore the dark side of how society has often misunderstood and marginalized those who think differently, and how the fight for neurodiversity acceptance is still an ongoing battle.1. On this episode, Nate is joined by Graham Palmer, a scholar and engineer in the field of energy. While this show frequently covers the importance of energy itself, this discussion focuses on how the ability to store and access energy has critically shaped societies. From agriculture, to wood, to coal, to oil, each transition has marked a new way for humans to interact with the world around them. What would it mean for economic growth if we no longer have access to these storable energies? What does the necessity of storability mean for electricity - an inherently flow-based energy form? Would human societies moving back to a flow-based energy system also mean once again becoming in-sync with the Earth and her ecosystems? About Graham Palmer Graham Palmer is a researcher at Monash University, with an industry background as an engineer and researcher in manufacturing, HVAC and electronics. He has published in the area of biophysical economics, renewable energy, life-cycle analysis, and energy-economic modeling. Graham obtained his PhD in the area of energy-return-on-investment (EROI) of electricity supply. His current research interests include the future role of emerging energy storage systems. Jules speaks with a practicing psychotherapist named Daniel Barker. For reasons pertaining to confidentiality, that's about all the info we can disclose about him. Daniel and Jules agreed to not disclose his location, his practice, and honestly, Daniel isn't even his real name. All of this probably sounds strange, but the question they're talking about is 'Is Psychology a Pseudoscience"? Who better to talk to about this sort of thing, than a practicing psychologist? My guest this week is Eric Vishria, a general partner at Benchmark Capital. Eric joined Benchmark after spending the first part of his career as an operator and CEO. The topic of our conversation is the past, present, and future of software businesses. We begin by explaining why public software companies trade at such incredibly high multiples today. We then explore the several different generations of these businesses and why the future remains so bright for companies building software as their primary product. I’d go one step further and suggest that the information in this episode is even more valuable for non-software businesses and investors, because its crucial to understand the impact that these products will have on the overall business landscape. COVID has accelerated the long-running transition to digital across the corporate world, and Eric serves as the perfect guide. Let’s dive in.    This week’s episode is sponsored by Bottomless. I was introduced to Gideon by co-founder Pieter Waller. I met Pieter at the rEVolution event in Amsterdam two years ago. It’s been fascinating to watch their growth, including an A-round of fundraising, and a partnership with Porsche. Gideon share some really valuable insights from that journey, in particular we talk luck and resilience! About Gideon Van Dijk Gideon is CEO and Co-Founder at Chargetrip, a company accelerating the advent of sustainable mobility by developing the missing navigation tools that help people and businesses switch to electric mobility. Over the last two years, Gideon and his team have taken Chargetrip from a small start-up to an emerging navigation company solving complex routing optimization problems for well known automotive clients. Gideon is a UWC Atlantic Alumni, ex RNLI crew member, and a serial entrepreneur, holding multiple leadership and advisory positions. He has a background in clean-tech, product design, and innovation consultancy. Gideon believes the sustainable energy transition is one of the most significant challenges of our generation and thinks electric mobility is a crucial catalyst. He is a life-long learner, occasional speaker, and deeply interested in technology-driven innovations that enable sustainable development. Gideon currently lives in Amsterdam with his wife and two kids. About Chargetrip Driving an electric car is amazing but should be anxiety-free. Chargetrip gives developers the tools to make routing and charging effortless for EV drivers and electrified fleets. Our routing engine uses over fifteen different variables to calculate the real-time range of any electric vehicle. Temperature, weather, charge speed, elevation, rolling resistance, real-time vehicle data, and availability of charge stations are all taken into account. Chargetrip’s routing algorithms calculate the best route to a driver’s destination, with the optimal charge stations in between. Build-in predictive models optimize for total travel-time and travel-costs. Chargetrip makes it easy for anyone to drive beyond the range of the battery. Chargetrip has received over 2M in funding and has won several innovation and sustainability awards. Chargetrip is a proud EEx portco, the premier clean-tech accelerator.
