Swiggy's Sriharsha is a shy guy

Welcome to Top of the Morning by Mint, your weekday newscast that brings you five major stories from the world of business. It's Tuesday, November 12, 2024. This is Nelson John, let's get started. Starting tomorrow, Zomato will fight its rival not just to deliver your food and groceries, but for your investments too. Swiggy will list on the stock exchanges after its initial public offering was oversubscribed by 3.59 times. At the heart of all the investor buzz is Swiggy's rather reclusive founder Sriharsha Majety. What is he like, and how different is he from Zomato's extremely public founder Deepinder Goyal? Ranjani Raghavan profiles Majety – the man of ideas – and how he quietly won over sceptics in the battle for food delivery and quick commerce.  Any foreign traveller will think about how they're going to pay for things once they have reached their destination. Cash, debit card, credit card, and forex card are your major options. Out of these, prepaid forex cards are theoretically the most economical option as they lower conversion markups. Shipra Singh writes that forex cards also allow for loading multiple currencies at the bank's prevailing exchange rates. However, loading fees and issuing charges can severely eat into this advantage. Shipra's research shows that providers like BookMyForex and Thomas Cook offer better value compared to major banks due to mid-market rates and minimal fees. ESOPs, or employee stock options, used to be restricted to startups. Mid and junior level employees got them as incentive to leave established companies and join fledgling startups. But now, even the former have joined in on the trend: Devina Sengupta and Sneha Shah write that companies are focusing on middle and junior management employees to retain top talent by offering employee stock ownership plans. They are being offered broadly across industries like IT and e-commerce. These benefits are traditionally reserved for senior management. This shift reflects a growing need to compete for niche talent even at junior-level positions. Soon, these companies might also offer other startup perks like flexible work arrangements to either attract or retain talent. Cryptocurrencies like bitcoin have fallen out of favour in India. Cryptocurrencies have seen a 90% decline in retail trading volumes in the past three years. Shouvik Das writes that Bitcoin's surge to a new all-time high of over $82,000 due to Donald Trump's recent election victory might tempt crypto investors back. Platforms like CoinSwitch and CoinDCX are reporting a 700% increase in active users. Challenges like heavy taxation and the Reserve Bank of India's negative stance on cryptocurrencies still persist, denting exponential growth. Issues like the WazirX hacking incident have also worried investors. Small-town residents in India are increasingly adopting the dining habits of their urban counterparts. They are developing a preference for eating out and trying international cuisines. Priyamvada C writes that the absence of extensive community spaces has made dining out an important social activity in smaller cities. With the Indian food services market expected to nearly double to ₹9 trillion by the end of the decade, investors see significant opportunities.

Davos might have missed some big names and even bigger countries this time, but India went with the aim of making a mark.   “Attendance from China, Japan and Korea was sparse this year and of course we heard nothing from Russia or much from Ukraine attendees” – This is what Gautam Adani, Chairman of Adani Group, wrote about his experience at Davos 2022. Even as the world's rich and powerful descended on Davos, the sentiment at World Economic Forum's annual meeting wasn't the same as before. Consider the conspicuous absence of many titans of finance.   According to Bloomberg, the chiefs of JPMorgan Chase and Goldman Sachs were not in attendance. Neither was BlackRock Inc's Larry Fink or Blackstone's Steve Schwarzman.  Meanwhile, nearly 100 participants and dozens of political leaders from India attended the World Economic Forum, and presented the country's position on the energy situation, food security and health equity at Davos. And, India's enthusiasm was well-founded. Here's what Business Standard reported from Davos.   India found itself at the centre of many dialogues on emerging issues, ranging from climate change to crypto technologies. European business leaders were eagerly scouting options for diversifying trade and investments. India appeared to be the best option for most of them, thanks to its political stability and reformist policies.   Many global investors endorsed India's rising economic relevance. For example, Saint Gobain Global CEO Benoit Bazin said that the company plans to invest over Rs 5,500 crore in the next four years in India. Bazin was bullish about the 45-billion-Euro company's growth story in India.    David Rubenstein, co-founder of the private equity Carlyle Group, told reporters in Davos that “India has been more attractive [to buy assets] of late than China.” Clearly, India benefitted from the absence of China and concerns over its heavy-handed ‘zero Covid' strategy.     Speaking from Davos, Pranjal Sharma of Business Standard says India is presenting itself as a stable, dynamic and growing emerging market at Davos. This is in contrast to the troubles in Europe and the US due to the ongoing Ukraine war. The idea is to attract investors worried by the uncertainty in markets and rising inflation, he says. State govts and the Centre aligned in their goals of presenting Brand India aggressively at Davos, Sharma says.  Ministers from several state governments, including those of Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, were also in Davos to attract global investors. Andhra Pradesh reportedly signed renewables investment pacts cumulatively worth about 1600-crore rupees with three companies. The investment commitments were made with India's Adani Green Energy, GIC-backed Greenko and India's Aurobindo Realty & Infrastructure.  The Maharashtra delegation reportedly signed at least 23 MoUs worth 30,000 crore rupees. Of these investments, more than 55 per cent are by way of FDI from the US, Singapore, Indonesia and Japan. The team led by Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai inked MoUs with two major companies for a total investment flow of 52,000 crore rupees. India also took its vibrant start-up story, already featuring daily in the domestic news, to the world stage. Consider the fact that along with several legacy leaders the Indian delegation also included unicorn founders such as Zerodha's Nikhil Kamath, EaseMyTrip's Prashant Pitti, Ashish Singhal of Coinswitch, and Vidit Atrey of Meesho. With the government proudly referring to the rise of unicorns in India, the founders were pleasantly surprised by the attention they were getting from delegates from India and abroad.    Pranjal Sharma of Business Standard speaks to Prashant Pitti, Co-founder of Easemytrip.   India also adopted a strategy at Davos that was significantly different from previous years – the Indian delegation was focused on improving

What challenges India may face at Davos?

The effects of the Russia-Ukraine conflict are being felt at the World Economic Forum's annual meeting in Davos. The political and business leaders of the world are anxious about Europe's economic future. Meanwhile, energy shortages and the spectre of economic recession have created a sense of gloom among many business leaders.   Other investment destinations are also looking uncertain. But, India has emerged as a region of both economic dynamism and political stability. Keen to capitalise on this prevailing mood, India is drawing the attention of global leaders to its reformist decisions and the fast pace at which new unicorns are being minted in the country. Global investors are also keenly assessing what the Indian delegation is bringing to the table at Davos. Taking place after a two-year pandemic-led hiatus, the ongoing World Economic Forum meeting is now looking at a different world than the last one was. And, that's a reason for India to find itself in a sweet spot.   According to Shyam Saran, Former Foreign Secretary and Senior Fellow, CPR, Chinese President Xi Jinping was the focus of Davos summit two years ago. Xi Jinping had then presented China as a champion of free trade, while the US under Donald Trump was seen to be on the other side of the fence. But China is not present at the current Davos summit and is on the back foot. Focus has thus shifted to India, says Saran, and India enjoys a potential interest as an alternate investment destination. This has led to the rise of the ‘China+1' model So, what is the message that India wants to get across at Davos?     According to Pranjal Sharma of Business Standard, India is presenting itself as a stable, dynamic and growing emerging market at Davos. This is in contrast to the troubles in Europe and the US due to the Ukraine war. He says, the idea is to attract investors worried by the uncertainty in markets and rising inflation. State govts and Centre are aligned in their goal to present ‘Brand India' assertively at Davos.   Sharma says India is showcasing the growth of its legacy companies and the continuous profits earned by global companies manufacturing in India. India is also advertising the rise of unicorns in the country, he points.    As reported by Business Standard, India has adopted a strategy at Davos that is different from previous years. The delegation, led by Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, is focused on improving internal coordination. “India's legacy business leaders are mixing with young unicorn founders like Nikhil Kamath of Zerodha, Prashant Pitti of Easemytrip; Ashish Singhal of CoinSwitch and Vidit Atrey of Meesho. This is the first Davos outing for many young entrepreneurs,”  Pranjal Sharma says, from Davos.    Before the start of the conference, Goyal had invited all delegates to share their views on India's positioning. The feedback from the meeting was then incorporated into India's stance and strategy. A microsite dedicated to India was also created as a resource centre. Goyal's team at the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the Invest India officers and members of the Confederation of Indian Industry are coordinating with state governments to craft a common response on several crucial issues.  Goyal's ministry is sharing briefing notes with all delegates on issues like, wheat exports and the government's flagship production-linked incentive schemes. To ensure least-possible confusion about trade and investment numbers, the latest figures have also been made available. Meanwhile, foreign investors are reportedly fleeing China. As a recent report by The Economist says, Chinese President Xi Jinping's policies are having a ‘profound' and ‘painful' impact on the markets. On the other hand, while India's growth forecast for FY23 has been slashed in recent days, it has retained its status as an economic bright spot. So, could something possibly go wrong? Well, there

In today's video we'll take a look at top 10 crypto startups and projects that began in India. Easyfi Network: Founded by Ankitt Gaur in 2020, EasyFi Network is building an infrastructure where developers can use EasyFi's network to build their own lending DApps (decentralised apps). Right now, EasyFi Network is offering what is called overcollaterised loans – this means that you can borrow one crypto by putting up another crypto as collateral. Mudrex: Founded by Alankar Saxena, Edul Patel, Prince Arora, Rohit Goyal and Snehil Buxy in April 2018, Mudrex is a no-code platform that would enable crypto traders to create their own crypto trading algorithm bots. Today, Mudrex has evolved into a complete crypto investment platform. Stader Labs: Founded by Amitej Gajjala, Dheeraj Borra and Sidhartha Doddipalli in 2021, Stader Labs is a crypto staking platform. The goal of Stader Labs is to simplify this process, by giving their users a convenient and safe way to maximise their staking returns without having to worry about the headaches and risks of manually delegating cryptocurrency to individual validators. Biconomy: Founded by Ahmed Al-Balaghi, Aniket Jindal and Sachin Tomar in 2019, Biconomy is making tools for developers to help them make their Web3 apps frictionless and as easy to use as possible. Take for example their flagship product Hyphen – this tool allows DApps to offer their users instant cross-chain transactions. Vauld: Vauld was founded by Darshan Bhatija and Sanju Sony Kurian in 2018, and it's basically a crypto neobank – they offer users a platform to store cryptocurrencies, take out loans, and trade. And one nice feature is that Vauld offers interest rates as high as 12.68% on cryptocurrencies that users store in their Vauld wallet, which is a lot higher than what traditional fiat currency banks offer as an incentive for you to use their savings accounts. Chingari: Chingari has actually been around since 2018 and was founded by Sumit Ghosh and Biswatma Nayak. In 2021, they began the transition from web2 to web3, with the announcement that they would be moving their entire platform onto the Solana blockchain network, and have since launched their own cryptocurrency, the GARI token. CoinDCX: Founded by two friends Neeraj Khandelwal and Sumit Gupta in 2018, CoinDCX is crypto trading platform and India's first crypto unicorn. By 2019, they had only managed to onboard 50,000 users, but then in 2020, the RBI's crypto ban was overturned by the Supreme Court. Many of their competitors by this point had given up, CoinDCX on the other hand was ready with a very impressive catalogue of products and services. Today, they're one of the leading crypto exchanges in India with more than 10 million users. Founded by Prateek Dwivedi, Pratik Gauri and Vilma Mattilda in 2021, 5ire is a sustainability-focused blockchain network. 5ire is charting a new course: their consensus mechanism is called sustainable proof of stake (SPoS), which features all of the same benefits of Proof of Stake but also uses the UN's Sustainable Development Goals so that companies and organisations using 5ire's blockchain will be rewarded for how sustainable they are. CoinSwitch: Founded by Ashish Singhal, Govind Soni and Vimal Sagar in 2018, CoinSwitch continued to build and grow its crypto trading platform, but on a more diluted global scale. That changed though in 2020 when the Supreme Court overturned the ban - now, Coinswitch was able to finally cater to the needs of Indian crypto traders specifically, and they're now one of the top crypto exchanges in the country. Polygon: Founded by Anurag Arjun, Jaynti Kanani, Sandeep Nailwal and Mihalio Bjelic in 2017, Polygon is an Ethereum-based layer 2 blockchain network that is trying to solve the scalability, high network fees and speed issues of the Ethereum network.

2021 has been a pretty incredible year for India's startup ecosystem - with everything that's happened in the year let's take a look at the 10 biggest highlights of India's startup ecosystem in our 2021 Rewind video. Younger Indian startups acquiring older companies: We witnessed this really interesting phenomenon where young startup companies were acquiring traditional businesses that'd been around for decades. For example, 5-year-old stock trading unicorn Groww acquired the mutual funds business of India Bulls, a 21-year-old company, for ₹175 Crore. We also saw India's only online pharmacy unicorn Pharmeasy acquiring a majority stake in India's largest diagnostic solutions provider Thyrocare, which is 25 years old, in a deal worth ₹4,546 crore. Byju's acquisition spree worth $2.5 billion: In 2021, Byju's took their acquisition spree to new heights by pouring in $2.5 billion to acquire 10 companies including the $1 billion acquisition of the offline coaching institute Aakash. Crypto unicorns are born despite the uncertainty: Despite all the uncertainty that surrounds India's crypto industry, we saw CoinDCX and CoinSwitch becoming India's first and second crypto unicorns respectively. Another great example of the crypto revolution in India is Polygon - a layer 2 protocol for building and connecting Ethereum-compatible blockchain networks which began its journey in India. Skyroot Aerospace prepares for space launch: Skyroot Aerospace, the first Indian startup to successfully test a rocket engine last year, in 2020, and this year they set another record too, becoming the first Indian startup to successfully test a cryogenic rocket engine, taking India one step closer to launching privately-built rockets into space the same way American companies like SpaceX and Blue Origin are in the United States. Byju's edtech, lawsuit and controversy: Byju's was shrouded in controversies throughout the year bringing into focus their alleged unethical practices and the $2.6 million lawsuit that was filed against Pradeep Poonia. Ola Electric's grand EV plans for India: They announced their S1 and S1 Pro electric scooters back on India's Independence Day, and started taking orders in October. During the first two days of this booking period, Ola received orders worth Rs 1,100 crore - that's more than 80,000 scooters! Ola single-handedly tripled the size of India's electric two-wheeler market, and on top of that, they started work on what was supposed to be the world's largest electric scooter factory before Simple Energy announced that they were gonna build an even bigger one. Superfast grocery delivery takes the front seat: Thanks to two 19-year-old Stanford dropouts building a startup called Zepto, 10-minute grocery delivery is becoming more and more commonplace in India's metros. Following Zepto's lead, Grofers, which has been around since 2013, rebranded themselves to Blinkit, ensuring that everyone knew they were as serious about super fast delivery as Zepto, and these kinds of high-speed deliveries are also happening now with Swiggy Instamart, too. Mensa Brands - India's fastest unicorn: The Thrasio-style D2C house of brands - Mensa Brands became the fastest Indian startup to join the unicorn club, entering the club in just six months. Nykaa's IPO: Nykaa's IPO was arguably the most successful startup IPO of 2021. Anyone who got an allotment in this IPO saw their investment double when Nykaa hit the stock market, and it also made Falguni Nayar, the nayika of Nykaa, India's wealthiest self-made woman. Zomato - the startup that kicked off the IPO craze: Zomato was the first Indian startup to IPO in 2021 and also became the first-ever Indian unicorn to IPO.
