Total market capitalisation rose by 0.9% to US$976bln, with Bitcoin edging slightly upwards by 0.4% to US$21,200. Ethereum made modest single-digit gains but has so far failed to break above the crucial US$1,500 support line. Blockchain networks Polygon, Binance Chain, Qtum and Solana all outperformed, while US$2.8bln privacy coin Monero enjoyed strong 7% gains. The decentralised finance (DeFi) space saw a number of losses, with Compound Finance and derivatives exchange Synthetix and dropping by 1.9%, and decentralised stablecoin exchange Curve falling by 2.3%. Crypto lender Nexo, which trended in early July after offering to buy distressed lender Vauld, was the day's biggest loser, having shed 2.6% of its now US$260mln market cap.

The crypto markets held steady on Tuesday morning, with the global market cap rising another 1.93% to US$1.02tln. Bitcoin maintained the US$22,000 support line while Ethereum continued to outpace the market with a 6.66% rise to US$1,527. The rally comes following news of an official September 19 date for Ethereum's long-awaited transition to proof-of-stake (PoS), a move which will significantly upscale the US$185bln cryptocurrency. Nexo — the Bulgarian crypto lender which has signalled interest in acquiring bankrupt lender Vauld — was the day's biggest riser, having added over 30% to its US$461mln market capitalisation. Cardano, Solana and Polygon all opened in the green, though Avalanche saw a slight 1.09% day-on-day decline. The decentralised finance (DeFi) market continued to perform well, adding 5.17% in total value across all platforms, exceeding the US$84bln mark. Stand-out protocols included decentralised stablecoin exchange Curve at 8%, decentralised exchange (DEX) 1inch at 3.41%, and THORChain's RUNE token, which rose by 1.85%. Not all DeFi platforms were bullish though: SUSHI token suffered a 7.12% decline, while Compound Finance fell by 3.6%. It was a good open to the day for play-to-earn (P2E) projects, with Decentraland, The Sandbox and Axie Infinity all posting positive results.

Twitter challenges some Indian content orders; EU approves sweeping big-tech laws; Nexo offers to buy Vauld

Twitter on Tuesday asked an Indian court to overturn some government orders to remove content from the social media platform it offers, in a legal challenge that alleges abuse of power by officials, Reuters reports. The EU approved two landmark sets of rules that regulate big tech companies. And Indian entrepreneurs Darshan Bathija and Sanju Kurian's crypto lender Vauld, which is in a financial bind, has been made a buyout offer by larger rival Nexo. Notes: Twitter on Tuesday asked an Indian court to overturn some government orders to remove content from the social media platform it offers, in a legal challenge that alleges abuse of power by officials, Reuters reports. Twitter has been asked by Indian authorities over the past year to act on content including accounts that supported an independent Sikh state, posts alleged to have spread misinformation about protests by farmers, and tweets critical of the government's handling of the Covid pandemic, according to Reuters. In a filing with the High Court in Karnataka, the top court in the southern Indian state, Twitter argued that some removal orders fell short of the procedural requirements of India's IT Act, according to Reuters. Meanwhile, European lawmakers approved two sweeping new pieces of digital regulation, paving the way for clashes between regulators and some of the world's biggest tech companies over how the rules should be applied, the Wall Street Journal reports. The European Parliament on Tuesday voted to approve the two laws — one focused on anticompetitive behaviour, the Digital Markets Act, the other on content deemed illegal in Europe, the Digital Services Act — after reaching an agreement on them with European Union member states in March. The Wall Street Journal also reported yesterday that Amazon, Microsoft and Google accounted for 65 percent of the $53 billion global cloud-service spending in the first quarter of 2022, citing data from Synergy Research Group. This compares with 52 percent of global sales four years ago. And their control of the crucial, rapidly growing market is expected to continue as their size makes them better able to keep investing and attracting clients seeking stability in turbulent times, executives and analysts told the Wall Street Journal. Vauld, the Singapore-based cryptocurrency lender that halted operations earlier this week, has been made a buyout offer from larger competitor Nexo, CNBC reports. Nexo said Tuesday it had signed a term sheet with Vauld giving it 60 days of exclusive talks to explore an all-equity acquisition of the company. If successful, Nexo said it plans to restructure the company and pursue an expansion in Southeast Asia and India, according to CNBC. Vauld, started in 2018 by Indian entrepreneurs Darshan Bathija and Sanju Kurian, said on Monday it had paused operations and that it was exploring restructuring options due to “financial challenges” posed by the latest crypto crash that started last month. The company is backed by the likes of Coinbase and Silicon Valley billionaire Peter Thiel. Theme music courtesy Free Music & Sounds: https://soundcloud.com/freemusicandsounds

Tata Consultancy Services, told the stock exchanges yesterday that a US court, which was hearing the latest appeal in a case in which EPIC Systems, a US company, has accused India's biggest IT services company of stealing intellectual property, has passed an order reducing the jury award of punitive damages to $140 million. TCS is legally advised that it has strong arguments in its favour before an Appeal Court and the Order on the punitive damages are not supported by the facts presented by TCS before the Trial Court, the company said. “We have been advised that the Order and the Judgement (when issued) is appealable to the US Court of Appeals, 7th Circuit Chicago,” TCS said in its statement. TCS did not misuse or derive any benefit from EPIC's documents, according to its statement. The lawsuit has been on for about seven years now. Vauld, a crypto exchange and lender, has locked out customers, citing the economic downturn. The Singapore company, started by entrepreneur Darshan Bathija, is backed by investors including billionaire Peter Thiel, co-founder of PayPal and a VC investor. “We are facing financial challenges despite our best efforts,” the company said in a statement on its website. This is due to a combination of circumstances such as the volatile market conditions, the financial difficulties of key business partners affecting the company, and the current market climate which has led to a significant amount of customer withdrawals of nearly $200 million since June 12 — when the latest crypto crash started. The company has hired lawyers and is in the process of filing an application to ask for a moratorium on any proceedings against it so it can explore options including a restructuring. “In the meantime, we have made the difficult decision to suspend all withdrawals, trading and deposits on the Vauld platform with immediate effect,” Vauld said in its statement. Xiaomi's latest flagship phone, Mi 12S Ultra, has a 1-inch camera sensor, The Verge reports. Xiaomi is said to have collaborated with Leica to develop the camera system, and with Sony on the sensor. The camera system has three cameras — a 48 megapixel ultra-wide lens, a 48 megapixel telephoto with 5x optical zoom (and 120x digital zoom), and a 50 megapixel main camera, which uses that 1-inch sensor, according to The Verge. The smartphone itself has a 6.73-inch OLED display with 120Hz refresh rate, a top-of-the-line Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 system-on-chip, a 4,860 mAh battery, 67W wired fast charging, and IP68 water and dust resistance. The phone is also supposed to be the first Android device capable of shooting in Dolby Vision HDR. Theme music courtesy Free Music & Sounds: https://soundcloud.com/freemusicandsounds

Inflation's surge may have topped out

Economy Watch

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 4, 2022 5:45

Kia ora,Welcome to Tuesday's Economy Watch where we follow the economic events and trends that affect Aotearoa/New Zealand.I'm David Chaston and this is the International edition from Interest.co.nz.Today we lead with news there are growing suggestions that the inflation surge may be topping outRemember, it is the July 4, Independence Day holiday in the US and financial markets are closed there.Yesterday we noted than most of the top ten global commodities were falling in price now. Other key hard commodities like nickel, cobalt and tin are too, most essential for green energy projects. But not lithium yet even if its rise is now over. The overall slide in commodity prices are an indication that inflation's bite may be easing, and quite quickly.Further, there are suggestions that the US may roll back some of its tariffs on Chinese imports, a Trump-era tax on Americans. (Only those drunk on MAGA propaganda thought they were a tax on the Chinese. US import volumes showed otherwise.) This could be significant too to arrest inflation.China is feasting on cut-price Russian oil, gas and coal. It is helpful for China because their economy is struggling to regain momentum. Other suppliers like Iran are having to match the Russian discounts. That in turn is driving down West African oil prices. And Australian coal producers are having to make the same match. All these price declines in these key commodities are helping quell inflation globally. In China, property developer Shimao Group has missed the interest and principal payment of a US$1 bln offshore bond due on Sunday, in the latest blow to China's embattled property market. To get their economy moving again, China has halved taxes on new car purchases. And China has found more undeclared additives in what is being sold as "pure milk" products. And these are from the Xinjiang Uyghur autonomous region. Propylene glycol is the additive; no mention of forced labour at these dairy farms of course. In Europe, there is no relief for producer prices, up +36% from a year ago, with energy prices almost doubling and non-energy prices up about +17%. But this is May data so there is no evidence yet that it is topping out, even if other June data has subsequently suggested that.High Russian gas prices has pushed German importers to the brink of collapse. But now the German government wants to add a rescue measure for energy companies such as Uniper in its energy security law and may end up acquiring a stake in the company.German exports slipped slightly in May when a small rise was expected. But that was despite a virtual collapse of exports to Russia (down -30% in 2022) . Being able to post a 'hold' in such circumstances has to be a good win for Germany in the circumstances, although since 2014 they have weaned themselves off Russia as a customer to a very substantial extent.Turkey's inflation rate rose for a 13th consecutive month to almost +80% higher than a year ago, its highest since 1998. This is what happens when a central bank chooses not to raise interest rates early enough. Meanwhile their currency dived further making the problem worse. Everything Erdogan does reveals he is incompetent. In Australia, SkyCity's Adelaide casino will be scrutinised via an independent review as part of a widening Australian crackdown on the gambling industry. One of Australia's largest insurers, Suncorp, says costs are rising from 'the material hardening of the global reinsurance market following elevated natural hazard activity in recent years'. Their focus might be Australia, but Kiwi premium payers probably won't be forgotten in insurance repricing for rising natural hazard claims. And staying in Australia, there was a big and unexpected jump in the number of residential building consents issued in May, up almost +10% from April when a -2% fall was expected. It is unclear how analysts could get that so wrong. Also rising is bank mortgage lending, up more than +2% in May from April, when a -2% fall was expected. The UST 10yr yield starts today still down at 2.89%. The price of gold is now down -US$5 at US$1808/oz.And oil prices are up +US$2 at just over US$109/bbl in the US, while the international Brent price is just over US$113/bbl.The Kiwi dollar will open today unchanged at 62.1 USc. Against the Australian dollar we are firmer at 91.5 AUc. Against the euro we are also unchanged at 59.6 euro cents. That means our TWI-5 starts today at just on 70.3 and marginally softer. The bitcoin price has risen since this time yesterday and is now at US$19,904 and up +3.9%. Volatility over the past 24 hours has been moderate at +/-2.7%. The crypto lender Vauld, backed by Coinbase and Peter Thiel, is exploring a possible restructuring after becoming the latest cryptocurrency platform to freeze services. You can find links to the articles mentioned today in our show notes. And get more news affecting the economy in New Zealand from interest.co.nz.Kia ora. Why are Indian Crypto Startups Moving to Dubai?

In this episode, we take a look at why many of Indian Cryptocurrency startups and entrepreneurs are moving to Dubai in recent times. So India never had a clear scene with Cryptocurrency up until 2017. This was the year when Indian authorities started cracking down on crypto exchanges and sending notices to Investors who made money from Bitcoin and other currencies. This was followed by RBI, banning all regulated Indian banks from holding or facilitating cryptocurrency transactions in April 2018. This ban remained for two years, resulting in first wave of brain drain in India's crypto space. ZebPay, India's oldest crypto exchange, Vauld, left India for Singapore in 2018 - the following year, in 2019, CoinDCX which had been registered in India since January of 2018, registered a Singapore entity, and Matic Network, a hugely popular Layer 2 scaling solution built on Ethereum, now called Polygon, left India and moved to Dubai. In 2020, that ban was overturned by the Supreme Court, but it didn't make crypto legal so confusion remained among people. And in early 2022, Indian govt announced a tax on crypto transaction, recognizing Cryptocurrency as an asset class. During the 2022 Union Budget, India's Finance Minister announced that the government would be levying a 30% tax on any income generated from the transaction of virtual assets including cryptocurrencies and NFTs. A second tax of 1% at source, that's TDS, was also imposed, and the interesting thing here is that this new taxable asset class doesn't benefit from losses being offset against profits. Once these tax laws came into effect, crypto trading volume in India fell by 55% in the first 2 days. This was followed by fintech companies and banks denying crypto transaction, resulting in further drop of Crypto volumes. By the end of the second week of April, trading volume was down between 70 and 90% across India's entire crypto market. This led to Indian crypto entrepreneurs and investors looking elsewhere and Dubai seemed perfect destination to move to. In India, there's a 30% tax, plus that 1% TDS. In Dubai, other than a general 5% VAT, there's no income tax, virtual assets are just a form of income, and because income isn't taxed in Dubai, any gains you make from selling virtual assets like crypto or NFTs are yours and yours alone. In Dubai there are clear laws regarding Crypto buying and selling, thanks to the Dubai Virtual Asset Regulation Law. Now this brain drain could have an adverse effect India's growth and development in the crypto space and would also result in lot of VC money going to these countries. So India still has time as most of these companies have moved their offices outside, but their employees are still working in India. Also, Crypto builders and investors are waiting for India's Crypto Bill, and if government listens to these voices and makes laws accordingly, most of these entrepreneurs would love to come back to India.

In today's video we'll take a look at top 10 crypto startups and projects that began in India. Easyfi Network: Founded by Ankitt Gaur in 2020, EasyFi Network is building an infrastructure where developers can use EasyFi's network to build their own lending DApps (decentralised apps). Right now, EasyFi Network is offering what is called overcollaterised loans – this means that you can borrow one crypto by putting up another crypto as collateral. Mudrex: Founded by Alankar Saxena, Edul Patel, Prince Arora, Rohit Goyal and Snehil Buxy in April 2018, Mudrex is a no-code platform that would enable crypto traders to create their own crypto trading algorithm bots. Today, Mudrex has evolved into a complete crypto investment platform. Stader Labs: Founded by Amitej Gajjala, Dheeraj Borra and Sidhartha Doddipalli in 2021, Stader Labs is a crypto staking platform. The goal of Stader Labs is to simplify this process, by giving their users a convenient and safe way to maximise their staking returns without having to worry about the headaches and risks of manually delegating cryptocurrency to individual validators. Biconomy: Founded by Ahmed Al-Balaghi, Aniket Jindal and Sachin Tomar in 2019, Biconomy is making tools for developers to help them make their Web3 apps frictionless and as easy to use as possible. Take for example their flagship product Hyphen – this tool allows DApps to offer their users instant cross-chain transactions. Vauld: Vauld was founded by Darshan Bhatija and Sanju Sony Kurian in 2018, and it's basically a crypto neobank – they offer users a platform to store cryptocurrencies, take out loans, and trade. And one nice feature is that Vauld offers interest rates as high as 12.68% on cryptocurrencies that users store in their Vauld wallet, which is a lot higher than what traditional fiat currency banks offer as an incentive for you to use their savings accounts. Chingari: Chingari has actually been around since 2018 and was founded by Sumit Ghosh and Biswatma Nayak. In 2021, they began the transition from web2 to web3, with the announcement that they would be moving their entire platform onto the Solana blockchain network, and have since launched their own cryptocurrency, the GARI token. CoinDCX: Founded by two friends Neeraj Khandelwal and Sumit Gupta in 2018, CoinDCX is crypto trading platform and India's first crypto unicorn. By 2019, they had only managed to onboard 50,000 users, but then in 2020, the RBI's crypto ban was overturned by the Supreme Court. Many of their competitors by this point had given up, CoinDCX on the other hand was ready with a very impressive catalogue of products and services. Today, they're one of the leading crypto exchanges in India with more than 10 million users. Founded by Prateek Dwivedi, Pratik Gauri and Vilma Mattilda in 2021, 5ire is a sustainability-focused blockchain network. 5ire is charting a new course: their consensus mechanism is called sustainable proof of stake (SPoS), which features all of the same benefits of Proof of Stake but also uses the UN's Sustainable Development Goals so that companies and organisations using 5ire's blockchain will be rewarded for how sustainable they are. CoinSwitch: Founded by Ashish Singhal, Govind Soni and Vimal Sagar in 2018, CoinSwitch continued to build and grow its crypto trading platform, but on a more diluted global scale. That changed though in 2020 when the Supreme Court overturned the ban - now, Coinswitch was able to finally cater to the needs of Indian crypto traders specifically, and they're now one of the top crypto exchanges in the country. Polygon: Founded by Anurag Arjun, Jaynti Kanani, Sandeep Nailwal and Mihalio Bjelic in 2017, Polygon is an Ethereum-based layer 2 blockchain network that is trying to solve the scalability, high network fees and speed issues of the Ethereum network.
