17 years of combination experience. A Captain on Engine 1 with Mooresville Fire-Rescue. It's very easy for a Company Officer to talk about expectations and not execute. I've been fortunate to witness first hand how putting words into actions leads to building a crew that actually wants to show up to work, train, run calls and overall just get good at the job. Captain Smith said it best in his interview. “The job is much better when you're good at it.”IG: russell.smith528

Straight from the floor of GSX 2022, Jim Bernhardt, Corporate Security Leader at the Nikola Motor Company, joins host Chuck Randolph to discuss the impact of storytelling to demonstrate the value of scenario planning and addressing risk before it becomes a larger issue. Thinking about what could go wrong is innate in nearly every security professional's mindset — from a visitor passing through monitoring stations unnoticed to a USB drive containing valuable information getting into the wrong hands. However, these same thoughts are rarely shared by the people they protect, and communicating the need to scenario plan and manage risk to the C-suite is no walk in the park. Jim Bernhardt, Corporate Security Leader at the Nikola Motor Company, discusses how to approach this daunting, but critical task with host Chuck Randolph. He shares what guides his risk assessment strategy, and how to use company-wide documentation such as the 10K to educate his team on risk factors and develop metrics to address them, using language that makes sense to business units throughout the company. Jim manages all corporate security operations for Nikola Motor Company, a leading technology and manufacturing organization. He provides protection for company personnel and property by creating, implementing and maintaining security systems, policies, procedures, and practices. He also manages physical security, loss/fraud prevention, crisis/emergency management, business continuity, travel security, incident investigations, event security, and executive protection. Sitting in the right front seat of a rig means a lot more than giving instructions on the fireground. In fact, that's a small part of the job. Sure it's important—I mean, lives are at stake—but you need to be equally good at the rest of the job. Company officers need to understand that not only will they be in charge at scenes, but they will become parental figures, coaches, counselors, and much more to their crew. And that's something that is rarely taught in company officer training. My guest today, Tim Cowan, will be teaching his class on “Riding Shotgun” at Firehouse Expo 2021 in September and he's here to preview that class for us. Tim retired not long ago from the City of Oneida, New York, Fire Department as a deputy fire chief and fire marshal. With about three decades in fire and emergency services, he's an active volunteer with the Canastota, New York, Fire Department. And he's also a deputy fire coordinator and fire instructor for Madison County, New York. Support this podcast

For example, if you are responsible for an ALS engine and have an all BLS crew, that would need to be addressed immediately. The Shift Prep Sheet may also reveal the strengths and weaknesses of your crew that day. It will help anticipate and overcome any challenges the day may bring. This will help you to best meet the needs of your crew. During your assessment center, pay attention to the details of all crew members and take notes. It is common for assessment centers to give you essential information throughout different parts of the testing process. For example, you may have to solve an employee challenge during an in-basket exercise and then see this same employee in a role-play scenario later in the day.

Even if you also felt that a promotion would give you a raise. Or more prestige. Or, mistakenly, less work. But if those were your real reasons for wanting the job, you're headed for trouble. Here to explain why and what a company officer really needs to know and do is Kelly Lemmons. Kelly is the Deputy Chief of the Colonial Park Fire Company in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He is also a firefighter/EMT for the Defense Logistics Agency. He's served over 19 years in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard, and is a Staff Sergeant serving as an Infantry Advance Leaders Course Instructor. Kelly was awarded the Purple Heart after being injured in combat in Iraq in 2005. Support this podcast

Returning guest, Deputy Chief (ret) Kevin Burns of the Framingham MA Fire Dept., joins us on this episode to discuss, “21 Tips for the Company Officer.” If you follow Chief Burns on Twitter (@burns227) or you have heard his first episode with us, “The Shift Commander,” you know that Chief Burns is well-experienced and very well-versed in the career firefighting life and ops. In today’s podcast, Chief Burns presents his “21 Tips for the Company Officer.” The easiest way to explain this topic is this – being a company officer is a lot more complex than sitting in the right seat of the apparatus. You might want to be the one to “floor” the pedal for the “Q,” or yank the line for those Grover airhorns. However, Chief Burns provides a great set of concepts for the current or future company officer, that goes far and above a “co-pilot” role. Be smart and have a pad and pen or pencil handy to take notes on Chief Burns’ discussion. In this interview Senior Station Officer Chris Hall from the Country Fire Authority in Victoria, Australia, shares his experiences while on an international deployment. He talks about the value of exchanging ideas from both interstate and international emergency management agencies. Deployment to California In October 2017, personnel from the Country Fire Authority and Victoria’s Forest Fire Management Victoria were deployed to assist in fighting the fires in Northern California. According to Emergency Management Victoria, there is a healthy relationship with California, in particular, CalOES and CalFire. Incident Overview On 8 October 2017, multiple wildfires occurred across California. The wildfires burned more than 245,000 acres, 8,900 structures and were responsible for 43 deaths. 2017 has seen California endure some of the worst wildfires in United States History. An Incident overview is available at California Wildfire Statewide Recovery Resource. Pack Test require for international deployment The pack test for personnel deployed to California involved waking 4.83 kilometres on a level track carrying a weight of 20.4 kilograms within 45 minutes. In a Fire Note from 2011, the Bushfire CRC discusses The relevance of the Pack Hike Test for Australian bushfire firefighters. http://www.bushfirecrc.com/sites/default/files/managed/resource/pack_hike_test_fire_note.pdf Incident Action Plans The incident action planning process provides a tool to synchronise operations at the incident level. It ensures that incident operations support of incident objectives. QR Codes and Avenza QR code (abbreviated from Quick Response Code) is the trademark for a type of matrix barcode (or two-dimensional barcode) first designed for the automotive industry in Japan. A barcode is a machine-readable optical label that contains information about the item to which it is attached. Avenza uses QR codes to deliver maps electronically. Avenza Maps® is a mobile map app that allows you to download maps for offline use on iOS or Android smartphone or tablet as well as on Windows 10 devices. Managing an incident within an incident A highlight for Chris was the way that CalFire focused on the importance of having a plan of action should an incident within an incident eventuate. The use of the Medical Plan form was critical in facilitating this process. The National Wildfire Coordinating Group provides instructions for completing this form. Wildland Urban Interface (WIU) Placard Another key point of interest for Chris was Calfire's use of the "Wildland Urban Interface Placard"(WIU). The purpose of WUI placard is to: Triage a property to determine the risks associated with defending a particular property. Document property information found during structure assessment at a specific point in time. Allow the Company Officer or Chief Officer to communicate their assessment of conditions to other responding units. Please follow the link to CalFire’s Training document: http://calfireweb.fire.ca.gov/library/handbooks/7000/Exhibit_CalfireWuiPlacardTraining.pdf The form can also is available at http://www.firescope.org/ics-forms/ICS%20231.pdf   Demobilisation Demobilisation is the orderly, safe, and efficient return of an incident resource to its original location and status. The Demobilization Check-Out form (ICS 221) ensures that resources checking out of the incident have completed all appropriate incident business, and provides the Planning Section information on resources released from the incident. Demobilization is a planned process, and this form assists with that planning. Incident Demobilization Vehicle Safety Inspection form (ICS 212) requires the Vehicle Operator to complete items & submit to Resource Unit Leader before demobilisation can occur. In this episode I discuss the importance of having a vision. We must have a vision to be able to get where we want to go in life and in our professions.  It is imperative that we see where we want to be and create an actionable plan for getting there. That starts with creating a mission and vision statement for ourselves.  This is the beginning of the process for following a self development plan.   When you start to have a vision and act upon it, you have some that want to blind you and to make you second guess yourself. They will try to make you feel guilty for moving forward, for working hard and for getting better!  DO NOT let them keep you from your vision!   Below is a sample mission and vision statement from a student from one of my officer development classes.  It its geared for the fire officer, but it is applicable for anybody. Thanks for listening and take care,Jason   Vision Statement “To obtain the rank of Company Officer with the ...........Fire Protection District. In doing so, use the position of Company Officer to positively motivate, lead, and train both new and tenured employees.” Mission Statement “To serve the ............. residents and employees with the highest level of professionalism and respect.”
