This week's show begins with Alex quizzing Graham about his recent trip to San Diego for this year's GMAC conference, followed by a mention of some limited waitlist movement seen on MBA LiveWire. Graham and Alex then pivoted to a discussion on the recent supreme court decision that has a large impact on how admissions can consider race in their admissions decisions. Your hosts believe that while this will necessitate some changes to the admissions process, there will be still processes that can be adopted to ensure diverse business school classes that represent all. Graham then highlighted the July event series, Essay Insights, which begins this Wednesday with Berkeley / Haas, Duke / Fuqua and Georgetown / McDonough. This is a very popular series that runs throughout July and early August; signups are here: https://bit.ly/cambaessay Graham then mentioned an Adcom Q&A from Cambridge / Judge; these new Q&As include a new question for each of our adcom that asks about waitlists. Graham then discussed two new Real Humans alumni pieces, an alumni from Emory / Goizueta at BCG, and an alumni from INSEAD at Meta. He then highlighted a new admissions tip which focuses on the importance of addressing gaps in employment. As usual, this episode includes assessments of three real candidates, taken from recent ApplyWire entries on the site. The first candidate has a 770 GMAT, and appears to have very interesting work experience and goals in the environmental area. Their one glaring weakness is their 2.9 GPA. Graham and Alex discussed ways to mitigate this weakness, and also suggested they may want to broaden their list of target programs beyond the big three of Harvard, Stanford and UPenn / Wharton. This week's second candidate hasn't taken the GMAT yet, but is concerned they will land a score in the 680-700 range, with a weakish quant result. All other aspects of their profile look very interesting. Graham and Alex discussed ways to mitigate a lower GMAT, if that is in fact the case. Candidate #3 appears to have very interesting work experience and a strong academic profile, from India. She also has one weakness, and that looks like the quant aspect of the GRE. She is also a history major, so it would really behove her to try to improve her quant profile, as she is targeting the very best programs. This episode was recorded in Philadelphia, USA and Cornwall, England. It was produced and engineered by the fabulous Dennis Crowley in Philadelphia, USA. Thanks to all of you who've been joining us and please remember to rate and review this show wherever you listen!

Military Historians are People, Too! A Podcast with Brian & Bill
Today Bill recorded live from a Historical Methods class at Georgia Southern University. For the record, Brian is doing a Huey Lewis - he's "working for a living" teaching a class, so Bill was left without a minder (very dodgy). Apparently, students in this class expressed an interest in history podcasting, so they got in touch with us (which may not have been the best decision). To show how the Military Historians are People, Too! podcast works, Bill is interviewing one of the students in the class - Jahnyiah Davis. Jahnyiah is a McNair Scholar and History Major at Georgia Southern University from Perry, Georgia (also home to Georgia State Fair!). We'll talk about her background, how she came to Georgia Southern, why she decided to major in history, and, of course, her BBQ preference! Special thanks to Prof. Cathy Skidmore-Hess for inviting Bill to invade her class and to her students for their interest in podcasting! So, enjoy this Bonus Short with an undergraduate history major! We hope the class got something out of it and that you will, too. Rec.: 10/25/2022

This week's episode of WireTaps kicks off with a discussion of the 2023 US News & World Report rankings for US-based MBA programs. For those of you who missed the results, Chicago / Booth shares the top spot with UPenn / Wharton, with Stanford and Kellogg tied for third, and Harvard and MIT Sloan tied for fifth. While advocating for more of a tiered ranking, Alex makes the case that rankings like US News do themselves harm when they place Harvard and Stanford outside the top two. After that discussion, Graham highlighted Real Humans Alumni pieces from a CMU / Tepper grad working at Bank of America, a Duke / Fuqua graduate working at BCG, and USC / Marshall graduate employed by Disney Resorts; each pivoting their careers. Graham also mentioned a new line of business; we have merchandise for sale! All for a bit of fun. Graham also discussed a podcast he hosted with NYU / Stern's Lisa Rios. As to the WireTaps portion of the show, Alex selected two ApplyWire entries and a DecisionWire entry: First up, Graham introduces a candidate who was a history major and then served in the marines. They have a passion for finance, and now want to transition out of the military into investment banking. Boosting the quant portion of the GRE and taking MBA Math appear to be a logical step to improve the requisite quant profile for that type of pivot. This week's second candidate appears to have had a strong career, so far, in the health care domain, and Alex and Graham suggest they need to double down on that, in terms of their post MBA goals. They are targeting a 750 GMAT, and with a score like that, should aim high with regards to school selection. Finally, from DecisionWire, Alex chooses a candidate (and long-time friend of the show!) who had decided to matriculate at Northwestern / Kellogg, but now has an offer from the waitlist from Yale SOM. In the end it sounds like Kellogg might be the right decision... This episode was recorded in Cornwall, England and Paris, France. It was expertly produced and engineered by Dennis Crowley in the land of Tastykakes, WaWas, and other amazing jawns. Welcome to another episode of Conversations with Coleman. My guest today is David Hogg. David is a Gun Violence Activist and a History Major at Harvard University. He rose to national prominence after surviving the mass shooting at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida in 2018. He is also the Co-Author of the New York Times Best Seller: #NeverAgain: A New Generation Draws the Line This episode is all about gun violence. Despite surviving a mass shooting, David feels and I agree that mass shootings get more attention than they should and that we should pay at least as much, if not more attention to the far greater number of people getting murdered in violent neighborhoods every day. David and I clash somewhat over the right approach to gun control. We spend a good deal of time arguing about whether it makes sense to have armed security guards in schools. We talk about the Second Amendment and the role historical context should play in our assessment of modern-day policies, and much more. #Ad Ground News is a news comparison platform, empowering readers to see how sources with different underlying biases are covering a story and form a balanced view of the day's most important news. Researching for podcast episodes is different in the pandemic. I often have met the person long before I interview them. Perhaps we shared a coffee or drink, maybe we worked together or I saw them speak at a conference. Perhaps I grew up listening to them, worked in the same market or interviewed them for a job. The pandemic has turned some of episodes into radio Lava-Life dates. That's what happened with this episode with Lena Shulman from Vancouver's Jack-FM.In this episode, I spent a fair amount of time asking her the questions on her online profile, but the real gold was in the after dinner drinks where I found her her family emigrated from the former Soviet Union and later Israel on their way to Canada. As we spoke it was apparent that Lena also knew multiple languages. Her broadcast career started on campus at the University of Toronto where she was studying history. From there she opted for a producer position at Corus Radio Toronto and made her way across Canada to Lloydminster, Saskatoon, Niagara and then back to Vancouver's Jack 96.9 FM where she co-hosts the morning show with Drex and Bob Addison, aka No Fun Bobby.Lena made mention of a book by Roy Williams called Pendulum. Bryan Barletta of Sounds Profitable is known for being a guy that explains complicated podcasting ad-tech in a helpful, generous way. Ryan Rose of JoneKiri is an up-and-comer in the industry who has already made a mark by helping talent communicate across multiple platforms. Both started in podcasting. Both quit their day-jobs in podcasting mid-pandemic (!) to launch their own businesses. And both are succeeding wildly. In this conversation they discuss with host E.B. Moss everything from how advertisers can go beyond traditional podcast ad exposure and pricing, to the implications of a "cookie-less world" to the better mousetrap of content marketing cross screen*. These are smart young turks who share a lot of wisdom. We discuss: How Bryan went from McDonalds to History Major to a major force in the developer space before landing in podcasting...and starting Sounds Profitable Why this quote from his recent newsletter post sums up Bryan's mission...and value: When buyers have a hard time translating tools, metrics, and services between advertising channels we get friction, and friction prohibits more buyers from choosing podcast advertising as a viable channel. But that friction can be soothed with education. How slowing down to focus on that education in the business can help speed up revenue Why Megaphone, Advertisecast and Podcorn got snapped up... And why HotPod and PodNews are read voraciously... The imperative for diverse podcasters and the effort to support them by, e.g., former Insider Interviews guest, Juleyka Lantigua-Williams Our "surprise mystery guest", Ryan Rose makes his entrance and explains the what (and pronunciation!) of JoneKiri (hint: discipline and passion...) The opportunity for talent to help offer presence across podcasting + + +...all screens! Why a "cookie-less world" is not such a bad thing...especially in the podcasting world. (Guess who answered THAT one?!) Why Bryan thinks Ryan "fits into a category of people that I think are going to be the next and hottest things in the next two years in podcasting" and why Ryan thinks beyond the pre- or mid-roll, and in fact staked his current career on it The world beyond the CPM or CPA Why they think I'm great. (Kind of love that.) There's a lot more. These are smart guys. You'll want to listen. Again. And maybe again. Thank you to NOV-National Oilwell Varco for sponsoring this episode. To find out more about NOV please visit their: Website and make sure to follow them on Linkedin. Lindsy Sallee grew up in a household that strongly believed quitting wasn’t an option. Her family had the belief,if you try something you have to stick to it for a year before you make any decisions. Little did Lindsy know, at the time, this would be her mantra throughout her entire career and life. Lindsy went to a non-traditional oil and gas school in St. Louis, Washington University. Wash U is a liberal arts focus school. Lindsy was on a political science path until her Junior year when she realized, Business School was more of a fit than the political scene. Interestingly enough, NOV was making a push for Western state schools at the time, due to familiarity with “smart kids” coming from these universities. With no idea about the oil and gas industry she fell in love with the personality of the NOV recruiters and their overall demeanor... “They seemed so cool”. She then decided this is the place she wanted to work after graduating.Although Lindsy was set on working for NOV she received a rejection letter after her interview process. She was devastated. A few weeks later she received a call from NOV for a different position, an inside sales role. She jumped on the opportunity and her path at NOV started. With little technical knowledge, Lindsy had to overcome the fact that others around her knew more than she did. She didn't allow this to set her back, she took it upon herself to learn each role and make time to go to the field and understand the products she was selling.Lindsy is a mom of two and gives advice on her perspective of work life balance. With her first kid, 7 years ago, she was concerned that having kids was going to set her back in her career. She had a mentor at the time that said, “ Just do it, everything will fall into place”. She described the anxiety she had telling her first boss about her pregnancy… needless to say his response was surprising. Lindsy provides insight into the changes she has seen over the last 16 years with diversity and inclusion. She expresses the need to continue placing nontraditional people into roles that might not seem like a good fit, in return diversity in all aspects will grow. Having people succeed in roles that were perceived in the past to only have “ XYZ” traits begins to change people’s thoughts on who should fit that role. Lindsy describes the time they hired a History Major into a Commissioning role, at the time it didn't seem like the right fit, based on the perception of who would excel in that role. He ended up exceeding expectations, their thoughts on the former educational requirements were forever changed. Thank you NOV and PESA for sponsoring this episode. As fewer college students opt to major in history, there's an effort by history departments to prove the practical value of their discipline.
In today's episode, I am joined by Alex Litwin. This episode is an hour in length, but I promise you, it's worth every single minute. Alex embodies two really important qualities young people should strive for: Listen to, and be honest with, yourself. Give yourself permission to pursue your honest intentions. Throughout this story, you'll hear a lot about Alex listening to himself and not being afraid to share his goals. Whether it was choosing his major, taking time off from school, wanting to live in San Francisco over New York City, or recognizing burn-out, Alex stays true to himself and lets others know in a professional way. Alex started his career at VaynerMedia and received mentorship from both CEO Gary Vaynerchuk (look him up if you don't know him) and now Chief Heart Officer Claude Silver. We talk about how he got there, what the conversation was like to ask to live in SF and not company headquarters in NYC, and what it was like to move on from the amazing opportunity to a bigger calling. He moved to Israel for some time and took on a demanding job, where he learned why doubling down on your strengths is important. He now works at one of the biggest tech companies you've never heard of. Enjoy! Time Stamps (a few highlights for easy reference): 23:35 minutes - getting a job at VaynerMedia, sitting down with Gary Vaynerchuk, and expressing wanting to move to San Francisco instead of New York City 27:23 - Alex talks about a mentor at Vayner Claude Silver Chief Heart Officer - she helped Alex realize to pursue what he loved 29:24 - How Gary's advice helped me and why Google founder Larry Page looked for passions in people 31:15 how the Chief Heart Officer at Vayner Media became Alex's mentor 32:31 - Alex Gary's authenticity and receiving mentorship from the CEO
Guests: David-James Gonzales, Assistant Professor of History, BYU; Eric Ruiz Bybee, Assistant Professor of Multicultural Education, BYU; Grace Soelberg, History Major at BYU; Don Izekor, Pre-Law Major at BYUFebruary is Black History Month. Why don't we celebrate White History Month? That question was asked at a panel discussion at BYU recently – and honestly, it's something many white people might wonder. Why don't we, in America, celebrate the culture and contributions of white citizens in the same way we dedicate space to celebrate African Americans or Latinos or American Indians? Aren't whites just as entitled to be proud of their culture and heritage? In this panel discussion, we explore what it means to celebrate "whiteness" in America.
Pres. Trump, Roger Stone and the Politics of Justice in Washington (0:31)Guest: Ryan Vogel, Director of the Center for National Security Studies, Utah Valley UniversityPresident Trump's friend and political ally Roger Stone was sentenced today to a little over three years in prison for lying to Congress and threatening a witness during the Mueller investigation. President Trump has called the whole thing unfair repeatedly on Twitter. One of those tweets came just before US Attorney General William Barr stepped in and overruled the recommendation from prosecutors in his department who said 7-9 years in prison would be the right sentence for Roger Stone. Then, the Attorney General came under fire for bowing to the political whims of President Trump. But he is, after all, an appointee of the President, so how is he supposed to handle requests from the person who can fire him at will? Robots That Sweat Just Like Us (15:46)Guest: Robert Shepherd, PhD, Associate Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Cornell University and Runs the Organic Robotics Lab at CornellAs robots do more and more of the heavy lifting for us, how will they deal with the problem of overheating? Fans can help cool them down. But what about the way humans do it – by sweating? Yeah, no way. A robot sweating? That's just too weird. But engineers at Cornell University have made a robot that sweats and they think it's a pretty promising idea. Carl Butz Saves Local Newspaper (33:54)Guest: Carl Butz, Retired Computer Programmer, Owner of the Mountain MessengerThe latest issue of California's oldest weekly newspaper is on stands today – hot off the presses. Publishing a local newspaper is always a challenge, but for The Mountain Messenger, it's basically a miracle. In mid-January, the paper was set to fold. Then retired computer programmer Carl Butz decided he couldn't let that happen, so he stepped in with money he'd been saving to go on vacation and is now the proud owner of a small-town paper in an industry that's dying nationwide. What It Means to Celebrate Whiteness in America (50:38)Guest: David-James Gonzales, Assistant Professor of History, BYU; Eric Ruiz Bybee, Assistant Professor of Multicultural Education, BYU; Grace Soelberg, History Major at BYU; Don Izekor, Pre-Law Major at BYUFebruary is Black History Month. Some Scientists don't like EPA's Proposed Transparency Rule (1:26:18)Guest: Gabriel Filippelli, PhD, Professor, Director, Center for Urban Health, Department of Earth Sciences, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis Usually, science is all about transparency. We want to know more about the world around us, and we want to know that the information we're getting is fact, not fiction. An Environmental Protection Agency proposed policy change would improve transparency, but it also has scientists and physicians raising some concerns.

Today’s guest is a very talented children’s book illustrator, Simona Ceccarelli. She is half British, half Italian, half Swiss and more than a quarter French. She lives in Switzerland with her husband and two children, but what I find most interesting about Simona is that she wasn’t always in the creative field. In fact, Simona spent most of her life working as a research scientist. Simona switched careers back in 2013 and never looked back. She is a great example that it is never too late to reinvent yourself. No matter how old you are or what career you’re in. It is possible! I also interviewed several other guests on this podcast that share a similar path with Simona. You may remember David Ariew from episode 56. He went From Neuroscience to Motion Graphics, then Ryan Summers episode 50, Ryan switched from science to art, Lloyd Alvarez episode 42, he was pre-med before he switched to Motion Graphics and Nick Lyons episode 45, he switched from History Major to Motion Graphics. These talented artists are now doing what they love all because they followed their heart. Nothing stopped them from pursuing their dreams and nothing should stop you. Our past guest Scott Buoncristiano said it best in episode 51. He said: “The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago, but the second best time is today.” and Scott was another late bloomer. He didn’t start drawing until he was 36 years old and now he is a very busy freelance illustrator in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. All that to say that It is never too late to follow your dreams. Nick Lyons is a motion designer living in London, but originally from California. He plays the bagpipes and rides his bike as often as possible, but rarely does both at the same time. Clients include Marvel Studios, DC Comics, Disney, Nickelodeon, Paramount, Microsoft, Fox, Intel, ABC, Toshiba, National Geographic, TED Website: www.NickLyons.tv
