Cities and Memory - remixing the sounds of the world

"My wife and I traveled to Seville on my honeymoon and saw Flamenco. I even created field recordings of Flamenco while there. But I never did anything with the recording, though I've thought about it quite often. When it showed up on the list of possible sounds to remix for Sonic Heritage, it felt like that sound chose me. "Musically my goal was to keep the essence of the original piece intact while using a more traditional LoFi song structure. But rather than modernize the tune and strip away the history in the art form, I tried used atmospherics and subtle instrumentation to enhance the otherworldliness of the live sound captured by Stuart in the original recording." Guest: Josh Silverman, CEO of EtsyWhen Josh Silverman joined the board of Etsy, he had one condition: “Don't ask me to the be the CEO.” And technically, they didn't ask. One day, he got a phone call informing him the board had elected him as the new CEO, just days before an earnings miss. He knew the odds were against him — layoffs would be necessary, and “I was going to have to be the villain” — but decided to say yes out of a sense of duty to Etsy's users and workers. “If I can be helpful, I have a responsibility to do it,” Josh says.Chapters:(00:55) - Energy management (02:42) - Meetings (09:56) - Etsy's strategy (13:36) - Learning to delegate (17:10) - Setting an example (24:17) - Evite's rise and fall (27:46) - Self vs. company (30:22) - Legacy (34:21) - Control and agency (37:44) - Joining Etsy's board (40:40) - Becoming CEO (46:16) - Culture shock (48:09) - “We need you, trust us” (51:25) - eBay and Skype (57:15) - Pushed out (01:00:40) - Accountability and family (01:03:53) - Time horizons (01:05:55) - Gen AI-supported art (01:08:29) - Who Etsy is hiring and what “grit” means to Josh Mentioned in this episode: Ken Chenault and American Express, Nick Daniel, Rachana Kumar, Ticketmaster and IAC, Etsy Studios, Silverlake, Shopping.com, Google, Microsoft, and Austin City Limits. Links:Connect with JoshLinkedInConnect with JoubinTwitterLinkedInEmail: grit@kleinerperkins.com Learn more about Kleiner PerkinsThis episode was edited by Eric Johnson from LightningPod.fm

Etsy recently reported its earnings results, generating noteworthy discussions among shareholders and market analysts. During the earnings call, Etsy's CEO, Josh Silverman, elucidated the company's strategic direction: "We're focused on creating cleaner shopping aisles for buyers. All too often, when you visit Etsy, your search is cluttered, showing you too many items that feel very similar, increasing cognitive load while failing to highlight the incredible diversity that is a towering strength for Etsy." Clear from this statement, Etsy is committed to ameliorating the user experience by enhancing navigability and showcasing product diversity. In Q1 2024, Etsy experienced a 3.7% decline in gross merchandise sales (GMS) compared to the previous year. Despite this setback, the company's revenue increased by 0.8%, totaling $646 million. The company also held its active buyer count steady at approximately 92 million.According to Etsy's earnings call, their growth strategies were introduced to augment the user experience and improve product visibility. Among these is Gift Mode, a feature aimed at pioneering unique gifting ideas and propelling Etsy to lead in gift-oriented e-commerce. Additional implementations have led to a slight increase in Q1 gifting GMS year on year.Etsy is also investing efforts to enhance its product curation and organization strategies, with the goal to secure high-quality listings and photography, competitive shipping prices, and reliable customer reviews. A significant aspect of these initiatives is the implementation of machine learning models to better the search and discovery aspects of the platform. As confirmed in the earnings report, these technological improvements have led to a 20% rise in the number of experiments run per engineer. However, as acknowledged during the earnings call, the broader e-commerce sector faces issues due to a decrease in consumer sentiment, driven by the increased cost of living and reduced discretionary spending. Etsy highlighted the necessity to maneuver through unfavorable economic conditions in key markets such as the U.K. and Germany.Looking ahead to 2024, Etsy has identified strategic objectives centered around simplifying the discovery of unique products, raising deal awareness, and enhancing user convenience. By merging quality focus with artificial intelligence, Etsy aims to fine-tune inventory presentation and understand buyer preferences more accurately. In discussing future plans during the earnings call, Etsy announced a loyalty program set to launch in 2024. The company stated that the initiative is intended to increase purchase frequency among occasional shoppers.Addressing Etsy's recent financial performance, CEO Josh Silverman stated: "We haven't spent an enormous amount of time trying to dissect something that ultimately was just a timing shift. But that's what it was." This comment points to the company's focus on long-term strategies over short-term hiccups.Analyzing Etsy's Q1 2024, it's notable that the company is actively implementing diverse initiatives aimed at enhancing client experiences, distinguishing its offerings, and investing in quality and technology. However, despite Etsy's proactive stance, the current economic situation and fluctuating consumer sentiment present challenges. Moving forward, it will be imperative for Etsy to efficiently navigate these obstacles to maintain sustainable growth. This is a public episode. With a strong background in biotechnology, Josh has founded multiple successful ventures in the field, raising over $300 million in equity financing and generating a cumulative exit value exceeding $1.7 billion. After co-founding Calysta, a cellular agriculture company that converts methane into sources of protein for livestock and other food ingredients, Josh turned his attention to other ways to tackle the problem of atmospheric methane, which led him to start Windfall. Carbon dioxide removal (CDR) gets the bulk of attention in the greenhouse gas removal space, but methane is responsible for a significant portion of the planetary warming that we are experiencing. Methane is up to 80 times more potent than CO2 from a heat-trapping perspective and is significantly more diffuse than CO2 in the atmosphere, making it challenging to capture or remove it once released. While there are growing sources of anthropogenic methane released via natural gas infrastructure, livestock, rice cultivation, as well as landfills and waste processing, there are also significant naturally occurring pockets of methane released in the oceans and arctic tundra, which are likely to only increase on a warming planet, a case study in feedback loops leading to climate change tipping points.Josh and Cody dive into the problem of methane, as well as Windfall's solution and how Josh has grown the business. They also cover Josh's background and experience in the space. The MCJ Collective Venture Fund is a proud investor in Windfall, and we're grateful to Leron Gidig at EDF for introducing us to Josh as part of EDF's Climate Tech Convening event in the fall of 2022.  In this episode, we cover: [03:41]: CO2 vs. methane attention and short-term impact[06:03]: Methane breakdown into CO2 over time[07:18]: Sources of methane: natural and human-created[09:16]: Challenges with methane release and feedback loops[11:49]: Diffuse methane release sources like rice farming[12:58]: Connections to biological CDR solutions[14:46]: Windfall's work with methane-eating microbes (MEMS)[18:24]: Energy value and economics of methane capture[20:36]: Windfall's digester use on farms for methane reduction and fertilizer production[25:18]: Potential for branding "Low Greenhouse Gas" ag products[26:37]: Market for methane removal[28:05]: Decrease in natural MEMS despite methane increase[30:53]: Josh's biotech background and methane work[34:20]: Windfall's branding and company status[35:27]: Where the company stands today, scaling, and low technology risk[37:01]: Windfall's patented natural MEMS[38:58]: Scaling MEMS for diffuse methane sources[41:27]: Following and connecting with WindfallGet connected: Josh Silverman LinkedInCody Simms Twitter / LinkedInMCJ Podcast / Collective*You can also reach us via email at info@mcjcollective.com, where we encourage you to share your feedback on episodes and suggestions for future topics or guests.Episode recorded on Aug 8, 2023 (Published on Aug 17, 2023)

On this week's episode, Greg and I discussed, among other topics, xenophobia (space racism) in the universe of Mass Effect. Much has been said over the decade on the topic, but we took the vantage point of comparing the Citadel to our childhood home city of New York. We compared how New York, despite being known as a melting pot of cultures has since its inception been a place of cross-cultural strife. The Citadel is much the same, with new species of people coming and going and demanding equal and equitable treatment, while from the perspective of the government there is not enough for everyone. Laws and rules are assigned, but some powerful new groups—humans—find ways to skirt those laws. Speaking of humans, we also had a surprisingly long conversation about everyone's least favorite Virmire survivor, Ashley Williams. In a surprising turn of events, Greg and I discussed the things we loved about her character, even if we didn't like her directly, and explained a bit why we don't always sacrifice the notorious space racist. On this week's episode, Eric and I discussed, among other topics, how the average player sees so little of the _Mass Effect _story. During their playthroughs they follow a story through from start to finish, and maybe play it through a second time, all the while making the same or similar choices. This creates moments where they believe that there is little to no real agency and not much changes, but they're only seeing a small piece of that picture. We discussed how there's so much in _Mass Effect 3 _that can be altered and shifted, often by choices made an entire game or two earlier, that quite often the final game in the trilogy can become a daunting prospect to take on. On this week's episode, Kenneth and I discussed agency in the Mass Effect universe, among many other topics. In exploring Commander Shepard's journey, players are often put in situations where they're guessing at what Shepard will say based on snippets of dialogue. These don't always relate to the exact circumstances of what will be said, leading to a bit of occasional cognitive dissonance between what players intended, versus what actually happened. In this episode we looked at how the ending to Mass Effect 3 gave the only true agency to Commander Shepard, as through no spoken dialogue Shepard was finally able to do exactly what the player wished. For our second of two debut episodes of Massively Affected, I'm joined by Sylvi Needham, my Constantly Calibrating co-founder, and original co-host of the Constantly Calibrating Podcast. Back in 2012, prior to the release of Mass Effect 3, Sylvi and I texted each other at random because we both had the idea to record a podcast about the then upcoming end to our favorite video game trilogy. Fast forward a few weeks and we had recorded the first two episodes of what became the Constantly Calibrating Podcast, focused entirely on Mass Effect. While Sylvi's time with the show was only a few dozen episodes, we ultimately reconnected many years later once again over our love of our favorite sci-fi worlds. On this episode of Massively Affected we tackled her history with the series, explore discovering identity through the original trilogy, and take a look to the future with both the Mass Effect: Legendary Edition, and whatever sequel is on the distant horizon! Sylvi is not the most active person on Twitter, but if you want to chat with her more you can find her on occasion at @DarthSir. If this was your first episode of Massively Affected, check out episode one with Matt Storm. Also, come on back and join me for episode three next week, featuring the ever-lovable Aiden Swank!
