In Part 2 of my high-flying conversation with Charles Joly, some of the topics we discuss include: The 2014 Diageo World Class win that elevated Charles to global bartending celebrity, and the story of the innovative cocktail that put him in the winner's circle. The importance of timing in cocktail builds and presentation and how effective manipulation of timing can play on a guest's anticipation, which Charles refers to as a “6th sense.” The genesis of Crafthouse Cocktails, a ready-to-drink cocktail brand that has its roots way back in 2013, at time when most people viewed the RTD category as either a non-sequiter or a complete heresy. We cover what the very early RTD landscape looked like, how Charles and his team went about designing canned beverage that actually taste like a real cocktail, the decision to partner with leading spirits brands, and even Crafthouse's recent placement on United Airlines. We wrap the conversation by discussing some of Charles' other favorite projects, like Cayman Cookout with chef Eric Ripert, his own line of custom barware, and even his online vintage store side hustle. Along the way, we cover Charles' most important tips for succeeding in a cocktail competition, why Crafthouse opted for a Paloma over a Margarita in their RTD portfolio, a maximalist itinerary for a full day of eating and drinking your way through Chicago's culinary gems, and much, much more.
Eat. Drink. Social: Social Media Marketing in the Food & Beverage Industry
We sit down with the founders of one of the original ready-to-drink cocktail brands -Crafthouse Cocktails. Matt Lindner and Charles Joly share how they parlayed their impressive hospitality experience into an RTD brand. Tune into hear about the challenges and opportunities they've faced.

It was such a fab interview, and thank you to Susan again for sharing her inspirational story. I took so much from it, and I know that you will, too. Don't forget to join us for MilspoMay, and of course, join the 2024 Milspo Small Business Bootcamp. It's going to be the most amazing week and it's really going to help you build an epic business or side hustle in the same way that Susan has done in the same way that we can all do.
Susan Bonnar is one heck of a lady! She started her career in the Royal Navy as an air traffic controller, but after twenty plus years, she left as her husband was also serving and she needed to be at home for her family. During her time in the Navy, she'd started making cards and wanted to do more of this when she left but realised that without a network, it was incredibly hard to reach an audience and sell. This led to the formation of a collaborative group, which developed over time to become the British Craft House... but it wasn't a linear journey. In fact, it was listening to Sir Tom Hunter at Theo Paphitis' SBS event a few years ago that kicked everything up a level, as Susan discusses on today's episode. And it's gone full circle... at Theo's event last week, Susan was a speaker on the main stage. And she was hugely inspiring and simply incredible. What a lady... you're going to love this one...

Their primary competitors are multinational corporations with massive marketing budgets, highly experienced sales teams and distribution reach that stretches from coast to coast. So, how is it that Crafthouse Cocktails is beating the giants at every turn? Co-founder Charles Joly, a celebrated bartender and an influential figure in the emerging international cocktail movement, developed Crafthouse in 2013 and in doing so helped pioneer what is now a booming ready-to-drink (RTD) cocktail category. The brand markets small-batch bottled cocktails made with all-natural and high quality ingredients and are designed to replicate the quality of drinks served at the world's best bars. In the nine years since its debut, Crafthouse has expanded distribution of its products, which include a Moscow Mule, Paloma, Pineapple Daiquiri, Rum Old Fashioned and Smoky Margarita, to 23 states. Available in 200 mL screw top cans, 750 mL swing-top bottles and a 1.75 L bag-in-box package, the cocktails are carried by Walmart, Wegmans, Total Wine and More, Binny's Beverage and Whole Foods, among other retailers. The brand is also available at several theme parks and outdoor venues while its Gold Rush variety is available in all Amtrak dining cars across the U.S. Amid rising consumer demand for RTD cocktails and an increasingly crowded category, Crafthouse is distinguishing itself via quality, consistency and variety. In an interview featured in this episode, Joly discussed the brand's emphasis on differentiation, the impact of his experience and reputation in the brand's development, how a focus on quality helped establish and cement the company's relationships with retail buyers, and his perspective on the parallels between bartending and entrepreneurship. Show notes: 0:45: Interview: Charles Joly, Co-Founder, Crafthouse Cocktails – Taste Radio editor Ray Latif sat down with Joly at the 2022 Tales of The Cocktail conference where they chatted about 20-plus year career as a bartender and bar consultant, why ice shouldn't be overlooked in cocktails and his consistent attendance at Tales. He also spoke about why the creation of Crafthouse “was so simple and so complex,” the challenge in finding a co-packer that was aligned with the brand's quality standards and how the company is navigating a flood of new RTD cocktail brands coming to market. Later, he explained how Crafthouse was prepared for an explosion of consumer demand at the outset of the pandemic, why he believes that “cream will rise to the top” in the category, how he advises retail buyers about assembling an assortment of cocktail brands and why he credits taste, first and foremost, to the company's success in landing high-profile placements and partnerships. Brands in this episode: Crafthouse Cocktails, Abstract Ice, Skinnygirl, Ketel One

Bar Manager Breden Burley joins the show to discuss the restaurant's robust whiskey list, moving from the bustle of Long Beach to Dana Point, and his own journey, not just from starting his job at the start of a pandemic, but in pursuing family life, and his own health, all while making some of the best cocktails in the area. Enjoy! The Best Ceats Podcast brings unprecedented access to the Orange County hospitality industry each and every episode. Aside from the world's obsession with sourdough starters, one of the biggest trends to have emerged from last year was bottled cocktails. As an easy way for people to drink well at home, bottled cocktails were able to bring a little of the craft of cocktails from bars, into the homes of everyday people. But the bars and bartenders who are now starting to create bottled cocktails are by no means the first to think of the idea. Back in 2013, world-renowned bartender, Charles Joly, and Chicago bar owner and restaurateur, Matt Lindner, pioneered the practice with Crafthouse Cocktails. We speak to Charles and Matt about flavour, batching and the future.
Adam speaks with Crafthouse Cocktails co-founders Matt Lindner and Charles Joly about their almost 10-year-old canned cocktail brand, why they decided to venture into the RTD space, and some of the challenges and choices they've faced along the way. Please remember to send any suggestions or requests for future Conversations to podcast@vinepair.com. Thanks for listening, and be well. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Interview with Susan Bonnar I've always felt passionate about helping others. Turning your passion into a business reality that pays your bills is often lonely. It's hard work to make your dream your day job. More than six years ago I started bringing crafters together online and have helped hundreds of crafters gain more business through social media. Frustrated with not having a suitable platform to sell my own products, my idea for The British Craft House was born on an 18-mile run on the South Coast in February 2019. Within 48 hours I had a business plan and my idea for The British Craft House website became my new reality. We launched on November 1st 2019 and have grown now to over 400 sellers. We work together as a team to get noticed on social media and have a support hub that offers advice and guidance. 2020 has been an amazing year for us and we are excited to be in a position to bring handmade artisan goods into mainstream retail.
For our first episode we introduce ourselves and give you some background information on us and our business. Find out how we met and how The New Craft House has developed to be the business it is today. We also talk about our friendship and life living on a boat in London!
Hannah and Rosie popped up on my insta feed via a post that Heart Zeena shared about DIY sewing & I loved that New Craft House was making sewing cool & accessible to everyone! Friends since school, they've always been obsessed with crafting (girls after my own heart & I had to go to Hobbycraft straight after we met as I felt so inspired!) After having a successful blog & also struggling to find fresh and exciting craft products they set up The New Craft House in 2013. Using traditional crafting techniques in modern and stylish products, their range of kits and workshops inspire everyone to be creative. They run workshops from the studio on Broadway Market, East London with Hannah's beautiful dog who was napping behind us whilst recording! We lost the first recording after 10 minutes but they were so patient with my crappy laptop & were happy to start again from the beginning - thankyou! In this episode we discuss : How to get into sewing if you're a complete novice What the New Craft House workshops look like Why they started buying ex - design fabrics to sell on their website Common starter sewing mistakes to avoid! Episode 12 is all about one of my favorite things to talk about: Creativity! Meg and I talk about what it is, what keeps people from being creative and how everyone is uniquely and differently creative. Meg also shares a lot about her and her husband’s recent journey into becoming foster parents and her heart on that is beautiful. I’m so grateful Meg shares her expertise, her story and her heart with us. I love this topic because it’s been a big part of how I’ve grown up and how I was raised. But even if creativity is not a comfortable topic for you, I think you’ll find hope and truth in this interview. God is creative and if we are image bearers, we must be too! So if you’ve found yourself saying “I’m just not that creative” you better listen to this! Meg also shares some decorating tips on how she curates items for the Craft House and her own home.
