O nosso podcast está em festa. Afinal, não é todos os dias que publicamos o episódio 100!Para comemorar um número tão redondo, fizemos algo diferente. Neste episódio, o habitual anfitrião – eu – passa a convidado. Gus Clemens on Wine explores and explains the world of wine in simple, humorous, fun posts

This is the weekly columnValentine's Day cometh, time for expressing love and affection, although one can argue that should be on your to-do list every day.The celebration has roots as far back as ancient Rome. It was then called Lupercalia, a day dedicated to Lupercus, the god of shepherds, and aimed at promoting health and fertility. As do many celebrations, Lupercalia-Valentine's links to seasonal change. In the Northern Hemisphere, mid-February typically marks the end of the coldest nights of winter. Spring starts five weeks later. The pagan festival fell out of favor with the fall of Rome. In 494 CE, Pope Gelasius I officially banned the festival. Two years later, however, the same pope set things in motion for today's celebration when he recognized a Christian martyr, Valentine, as a saint. Executed around 270 CE, Valentine supposedly wrote an affectionate letter to his jailer's daughter and signed it “from your Valentine.”And then came the so-called “Dark Ages” and Lupercalia and St. Valentine were largely lost in the mists of memory. Until cometh Geoffrey Chaucer and his poem “The Parliament of Fowls” in the 1380s. Wrote the English poet: “For this was seynt Volantynys day, when euery byrd comyth there to chese his make.” His effort may have been an effort to celebrate the engagement of King Richard II of England to Anne of Bohemia.Chaucer's effort inspired others. By the 1400s, February 14th, the day in 496, when Gelasius canonized Valentine, the day became roughly the Valentine's Day we know today. The story is somewhat muddier, of course. There are three saints named Valentine and the Catholic Church removed St. Valentine's Day from its official calendar of feast days in 1969 due to lack of reliable information about the saint. That should not stop you from celebrating love and affection on February 14.Wine, of course, can be part of your celebration. Classic pairings:• Sparkling rosé. Can be expensive Champagne or the many alternatives. Clever folks will pair the rosé with a dozen roses and note their love always sparkles.• Rosé in general. Non-sparkling, “still wines,” can still indicate you are still the love of my life.• Ruby or tawny port paired with dark chocolate is classic.Tasting notes• Avaline Rosé, Vin de France: Light crowd pleaser made with cavalcade of classic rosé grapes, led by grenache. $16-20 Link to my review• Kopke 20 Years Old Tawny Porto: Archetypal tawny made by the oldest Port house in the world (1638 founding). $70-80 Link to my reviewLast roundWhat did the light bulb say to the switch on Valentine's Day?   Sandra Tavares knows the people, places and things that make up a wonderful culinary and wine journey throughout Portugal.  Sandra started her career as a journalist and found herself covering a burgeoning food scene, to the point where she realized she would enjoy developing tours and experiences for people, and taking them to the best Portugal has to offer, rather than just writing about them.  Eventually she met her husband Vitor, and as things happened, eventually they landed in a beautiful vineyard and winery owned by Portugal's benchmark Kopke wines, where Vitor developed a restaurant to serve the local bounty that complemented the wine.  And his deep contacts in the industry in turn, became Sandra's as well.   Sandra is uniquely positioned to be the foremost authority on food and wine in Portugal.  To that end, she designed a wonderful itinerary that our podcast host Chris Angelus' Portland Food Adventures is offering in May of 2025, on which food and wine loving folks can travel with St. Jack chef Aaron Barnett to Porto, the beautiful Douro River Valley and Lisbon to take bites and sips of the varied histories and customs of the beautiful country.  The trip features two hotels and inns from the folks at Kopke as well as dining with solid Michelin-star chefs throughout the region, as well as some pub food curated by expat Don Bourassa, former Portland Yelp Community Director.   This podcast is a fun journey outside of our area, but with Portland connections to keep us grounded!   The Portland Food Adventures Portugal trip is here:  https://www.portlandfoodadventures.com/portugal-with-kopke   Sandra is here on Instagram:  @simply_b_sandra   Podcast with Don here, where he talks about moving to Portugal:   https://rightatthefork.com/shows/2024/1/5/374-don-bourassa-international-adulting-and-inaugural-ratf-guest   Right at the Fork is supported by: Zupan's Markets: www.zupans.com RingSide SteakHouse: www.RingsideSteakHouse.com  Portland Food Adventures: www.PortlandFoodAdventures.com

As the Mother's Day weekend approaches, Kopke's Greenhouse is gearing up for what promises to be another bustling season. Founded in 1981 Kopke's began with just a couple of greenhouses aimed at supporting a vegetable truck farm. Over the years, the focus shifted towards ornamental flowers, prompting continuous expansion. Today, the operation boasts an impressive 33 greenhouses, filled to the brim with a wide array of flowers, veggie plants, and more. Despite the challenges posed by fluctuating weather patterns, including a mix of rain and sun characteristic of Wisconsin, Kopke's remains committed to providing quality plants. By using flexible strategies, including adjusting watering schedules and utilizing supplemental lighting, they ensure that each plant receives the care it deserves. The lead-up to Mother's Day sees a significant uptick in customer traffic, with numbers surpassing a thousand visitors per day in the days preceding the holiday. This year, the trend is particularly notable, with customers eager to embrace gardening and beautify their living spaces after a period of unpredictable weather. “Our loyal customer base, some of whom have been with us for decades, continues to grow,” says Josh Smith, co-owner of Kopke's Greenhouse. “We're also seeing an influx of newcomers, from seasoned gardeners to first-time plant parents. It's heartening to witness this enthusiasm for gardening, especially among younger generations.”See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Kopke wines are sourced and produced in Quinta São Luiz, one of the most important estates in Douro region. In this episode, we're back with Tori Kopke, my very first business coach, to talk about the idea of reverse engineering goals. Now, that might sound super woo-woo and a bit far fetched for you if you haven't come across this term before. But, I can almost guarantee that once you realise how this works and how it can play-out in your business, you're going to be kicking yourself that you weren't implementing this sooner! This is a practical way of moving the needle in your business and engineering growth to get ahead. It's also a vehicle to make those big, bold dreams achievable when we categorise them down into yearly, monthly, weekly and daily goals. I'm so glad to be having this conversation with Tori because it was with her during my first one-on-one business coaching experience that I got to understand how this works and how it actually plays out in a growing business. This is a chat with Tori that I can't wait to share with you guys. She's fantastic. She's practical. She's down to earth, and she gets what it means to running a business in a small town, trying to make a big difference. Let's jump in. I think it goes without saying, that as we're going along this business journey, there's going to be inevitably these uncomfortable stages of growth. They keep coming up and can make us feel like we're bursting at the seams. But, that's when we know we're about ready to hit another growth spurt. It's similar to when our kids start showing a bit too much ankle or wrist in their clothes. It's when we know it's time to overhaul their wardrobe or in our case, adjust our business practises. But, one of the biggest periods of growth that happened for us in business, is when we shift from that early phase of the hustle where we're doing everything and wearing all the hats to becoming our own CEO. Actually moving away from that mindset where we have to do all the things and towards starting to think more operationally about our business. What is it going to look like long-term? How do we get it there? How do we assemble our Avengers? Who do you hire? What software do you invest in? What products and services do you niche down on? It can be a really hard stage to get to go through both on a practical and theoretical sense. Also, the headspace side of things, where you know we have a lot of limiting beliefs that show up at this stage that we really need to face head on if we're going to move forward. There's no one else that's probably best suited to guide us through this stage than my first ever business coach, Tori Kopke. In this episode, I'd love to share with you her insights about moving into that CEO position within your own business and how that's going to unlock all this potential for the growth right into the future. In this episode, your host, Starlett Henderson talks to Tori Kopke about being a rural business coach, growth as a business in a rural region, connecting people online from different geographical regions, and more. https://www.torikopke.com/ (https://www.torikopke.com/) How on earth am I going to run a business? When there's no people around? And how am I going to connect with people? And how am I going to find people I can influence and grow their businesses...does this sound like you? Tori is a rural business coach who has been through it all. Being a leader, according to Tori, is about being innovative, but also being extremely open to new ideas and concepts, and always ooking one step ahead and never really settling for the status quo. This mindset has helped her see through the biggest problem (lack of population and network), overcoming that and finding a solution (getting visible online.) https://changeempire.com/ (www.changeempire.com)

If the word "sales" causes you to sweat a little and run the other way when it comes to your business don't worry we have you covered in this weeks episode of the Mums in Biz Podcast. In preparation for heading into 2021 and as we are mums in business who have epic goals sales plays a crucial part. So why is it that when we think of sales we think hard core, sleezy pitch lines and cheesy catchy headings? Or maybe this is just us......should selling our business, a business we are extremely passionate about feel like this? NO WAY! In this weeks episode Kyla sits down Tori Kopke a wife, mother, Texan transplant, and small business coach based on the family farm in the Wheatbelt Of WA. As the Rural Business Coach, she specialises in helping female run businesses across Australia grow to their full potential. Her method uses proven strategies with a twist of innovation and creativity to help clients achieve results. The recording was LIVE in the Mums in Biz Facebook group and was all about how we too can sell with confidence and authenticity to reach our ideal client. There were so many questions cover but here is a taster: 1. Where and how is the best place to sell or market our product or a service? 2. Are there different approaches we should have when selling either a products or service? 3. How can we build our confidence to sell with strength, what does that even mean and how can we find it within ourselves? 4. Do we need a website to sell or can we use our social media platforms? 5. Why do women find it so challenging when it comes to selling what they do? 6. How can we find our voice within an already saturated market? and so much more......
