We're joined by Dave Corkery from the Award winning Cinemile podcast as we take on The Doomsday Machine from The Original Series.   Dave grapples with the idea of being known as a Trekkie and tells us why this episode stuck out for him on his lockdown inspired epic mission to watch all of Star Trek from the beginning, Liam pays an emotional tribute to Commodore Matt Decker, Matt argues that the characters sympathetic handling of the villain of the piece represents the hope in the human spirit that Roddenberry's Utopian vision celebrates, and Paul celebrates William Shatner's performance and how his turn makes The Captain's actions believable.    So why not join us for another grand adventure by listening now!   As usual you can find SPOCKLIGHT on: TWITTER - @spocklightpod INSTAGRAM – @spocklightpod FACEBOOK – https://www.facebook.com/spocklightpod/ EMAIL - spocklightpod@gmail.com Please Follow, like, share and all that good stuff.   You can find more information about The Cinemile at https://www.thecinemile.com/ Credit for our wonderful theme music goes to the incredibly talented, Adam Johnston's, you can find more of his work at - https://adamjohnstonuk.bandcamp.com/ Our beautiful artwork was created by Stephen Trumble, see more at http://www.stephentrumble.com

In this episode- recorded just before Christmas- I'm joined by not one but two very special guests to discuss a very special film. The film in question- which incidentally turns 40 years old this year(!)- is 'Ghostbusters' from director Ivan Reitman. My fantastic guests are Dave Corkery from The Cinemile podcast and Liam Dempsey, one of the hosts of Spocklight: A Star Trek Podcast. And the three of us are all huge fans of this movie and we could have easily talked for double the length of this episode on our thoughts and feelings for this stone cold classic and the films which have proceeded it (we even touch briefly on 'Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire' which comes out later this year).

In this week's bumper-sized (so much so, in fact, we're wondering if we should have split it into two parts like last week) Empire Podcast, Chris Hewitt chats to Armando Iannucci, the co-writer/director of The Personal History Of David Copperfield about discovering optimism, and how hard it is to write comedy in the middle of a pandemic. And John Nugent talks to Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the latter returns to our screens with gripping plane hijack thriller, 7500. In the remote podbooth, Chris is then joined by James Dyer and Helen O'Hara, as per usual. But the rotating fourth chair this week is occupied by Dave Corkery and Cathy Cullen, the married couple who host one of our favourite podcasts, The Cinemile. Together, this intrepid quintet tackle the Film Fact section, answer questions about graduation speeches and non-trilogy trilogies (it'll make sense when you listen), discuss the planned return of cinemas in the UK, and review 7500, Dating Amber, Resistance, and Radioactive. We can see now why this is bumper-sized. Enjoy, if just for the Irish accents of four-fifths of the team getting increasingly thicker as the pod goes on. Wee buns!

For this special Flixwatcher episode Cathy and Dave from the Cinemile host Kobi and Helen for Kobi’s film choice Robocop! Robocop (the original Paul Verhoeven cyberpunk action film version of course) was the favourite film of nine year-old Kobi, it’s the story of futuristic Detroit where crime is high and the solution is to implant a dead cop into a robot. It should be noted Robocop is not suitable for nine year-olds!! Being Verhoeven it is almost excessively violent, a rogue ED209 peppering an unfortunate employee, Murphy being shot to pieces and the toxic goop incident being particularly graphic and grisly. Surprisingly Robocop hasn’t aged too badly, the stop motion effects from Rob Bottin still look pretty convincing and the performance from Peter Weller adds genuine character and empathy to Robocop. The plot and dialogue maybe haven’t aged as well and forget about the actual science, but it could have been much worse. Scores [supsystic-tables id=105] No one loved revisiting Robocop more than Dave, not even nine year-old Kobi would have given such high scores! It’s no Back To The Future so a 4.5 from Kobi for recommendability, so much love from Dave (probably too much love) which brings Robocop an overall score of 3.87. “Excuse me, I have to go. Somewhere there is a crime happening." What do you guys think? Have you seen Robocop? What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below! We’re celebrating 100 episodes of Flixwatcher! As a treat, we have TWO bonus episodes! Hosting in this episode are the Cinemile’s Cathy and Dave and the guests are Helen and Kobi! In this episode, we’re reviewing Jordan Peele’s Oscar winning debut Get Out, a satirical American horror from 2017. Get Out is not your typical horror, it manages to be terrifying, provocative, funny and shocking - it’s impossible not to be completely engaged in this film. Get Out benefits from a standout cast of Daniel Kaluuya, Allison Williams, Bradley Whitford and Catherine Keener, is visually stunning (the Sunken Place), is genuinely terrifying, surprisingly and fiercely intelligent. It also happens to have some fantastic gory bits too. Scores [supsystic-tables id=104] No surprises that Get Out scores pretty highly across all the scores from Flixwatcher and Cinemile, with fives for recommendability from Helen and Cathy (only a 4.5 from Kobi and Dave) overall Get Out scores a very respectable 4.55. What do you guys think? Have you seen Get Out? What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below!   Set in a dystopian future (never, never utopian!) where there are no apples and only the bad guys have shoes, Renton (no not that Renton) a well groomed engineer/underwear model is stuck in a Groundhog Dog style loop which has something (or nothing) in connection with a mysterious energy source. Neither taut nor thrilling this sci-fi misfire had some interesting ideas but was let down by the cheap sets, unconvincing acting, incoherent plot and unintentional moments of comedy. Despite its short running time of 89 minute the film was a bit of a slog for all to watch and reminded everyone of much better time looping films than this (Groundhog Day, Source Code, Edge of Tomorrow). There was so, so much love for the far superior Edge of Tomorrow from everyone, maybe watch that instead (crosses fingers Netflix will have it soon...)
