Everything starts somewhere, and when the games industry began to form in the UK, back in the '80s, Gary Penn - my guest on the One-to-one podcast today - was there. A young adult passionate about games, he was propelled to micro-stardom, as he puts it, when he won a competition to find Britain's best gamer and ended up writing for Zzap!64 magazine. It was a magazine that changed the face of games journalism, injecting passion and charisma and a sense of fun.   After Zzap!64, Penn would go on to win awards for The One magazine, before leaving editorial and side-stepping into consulting and ultimately, producing games. And it's then that he would cross paths with the most famous game series of all: Grand Theft Auto. Except, it wasn't called GTA at the time and it wasn't very good. In fact, Race n' Chase as it was known then, was "awful", according to Penn. But fate - and Penn - ensured the game wouldn't be cancelled and GTA would be released, paving the way for the series to become the cultural phenomenon it is today.   But by the time GTA3 was in development, Penn had had enough. He had severely burnt out and didn't want to work around the clock any more. So, along with some other DMA Design people, he would make a new studio called Denki to create very different kinds of games. Hundreds of these would be interactive TV games, but as time moved on, the studio ditched those in favour of games like Quarrel, which we loved on Eurogamer - a mash up of Risk and Scrabble.   Then, in 2019, the studio found success with Autonauts, a chill game about creating and managing a settlement by automating everything in it. It's that game Denki is building on now with the release of Autonauts vs Piratebots this week - Thursday, 28th July. So credit to them and look at their stuff if you can find some, it's really really good. Denki's maid fetish is something he's nursed for YEARS. It started with manga with EGL themes, and progressed from there. He liked the maids the best, and thought at first he wanted to hook up with a girl wearing a maid uniform, to be her master and all that good stuff. He'd consume basically anything maid related. Browsing a manga scan site, he started reading a series about a maid serving a master who was allergic to girls. However, Kaminari didn't realize at first he was reading the chapters out of order, and the maid was actually a cross dressing boy... and the whole series was solidly BL. It put the idea in his mind though, of being the one in the maid costume... and pretty soon he realized how badly he wanted a pretty maid dress of his own. There were plenty of cheap ones, but what he really wanted was something that made him feel like he was the loyal maid of a master who could afford the best. It took a lot of saving up, but eventually, he managed to make his way to Harajuku, where there were lots of stores selling exactly what he wanted. He'd psyched himself up for months, planning this excursion. He did not expect to see Shinsou Hitoshi manning the counter in a Lolita fashion boutique.

(Who, who, who, who?) There’s no Ste this week. After literally getting out of his sick bed to dj at Ann’s wedding celebration he then literally went back to his sick bed. This meant that Simon was in charge of the studio so there could be problem with the wrong jingles being played. Luckily our Super-Special Guest that we’d booked ages ago wouldn’t let us down right? We activated the ESSSG (Emergency Skype Super-Special Guest) beacon and Denki’s Gary Penn answered the call. He had a haircut especially for the show but it would also get an outing for his big interview with Jonathan Smith this week’s Develop Conference. Denki had been working on Crackdown 3, but have recently been taking the opportunity to test a few new game ideas out. One of which has come to fruition as Autonauts, which you can download for free on itch.io. We also spoke to Gary about working on magazines (which involved the Mario coin sound needing to be used), how making games helps you learn about ropes and which pubs he went to in Bath.
