Hugo speaks with Chris Wiggins (Columbia, NYTimes) and Matthew Jones (Princeton) about their recent book How Data Happened, and the Columbia course it expands upon, data: past, present, and future. Chris is an associate professor of applied mathematics at Columbia University and the New York Times' chief data scientist, and Matthew is a professor of history at Princeton University and former Guggenheim Fellow. From facial recognition to automated decision systems that inform who gets loans and who receives bail, we all now move through a world determined by data-empowered algorithms. These technologies didn't just appear: they are part of a history that goes back centuries, from the census enshrined in the US Constitution to the birth of eugenics in Victorian Britain to the development of Google search. DJ Patil, former U.S. Chief Data Scientist, said of the book "This is the first comprehensive look at the history of data and how power has played a critical role in shaping the history. It's a must read for any data scientist about how we got here and what we need to do to ensure that data works for everyone." If you're a data scientist, machine learning engineer, or work with data in any way, it's increasingly important to know more about the history and future of the work that you do and understand how your work impacts society and the world. Among other things, they'll delve into * the history of human use of data; * how data are used to reveal insight and support decisions; * how data and data-powered algorithms shape, constrain, and manipulate our commercial, civic, and personal transactions and experiences; and * how exploration and analysis of data have become part of our logic and rhetoric of communication and persuasion. In this episode, Richard and Abby are joined by guest Karthik Ram, a research scientist at UC Berkeley's Institute for Data Science and Berkeley Initiative for Global Change Biology, as well as co-founder and director of the rOpenSci Project, and lead at URSSI. Karthik's journey from field ecologist to data scientist has propelled him into roles that advocate for sustainable scientific software and open science. He currently manages projects, fundraises, and mentors while also overseeing initiatives aimed at developing best practices in software development, advocating for supporting policy, building user and developer communities. He emphasizes the significance of reproducibility and sustainability in research software and offers an empowering approach to maintaining academic software. Hit download to hear much more! [00:02:00] Karthik explains what he does as a senior data scientist, and he tells us that he views himself as an “engineering manager” rather than an individual contributor. [00:03:01] His transition from a field ecologist to a data scientist was triggered by handling large amounts of data and developing software to work with it. [00:06:21] The conversation turns to the JOSS, the Journal of Open Source Science, and Karthik shares the origin story for the software review process. [00:09:03] Karthik dives into the UC Berkeley's Science Institute, he tells us how it started, and what his role was there. [00:11:11] Karthik's involved with the URSSI, where they aim to collect and disseminate best practices in software development, advocate for supporting policy at a national level, and grow user and develop communities around their projects. [00:12:55] One of the projects coming up in the fall for URSSI is they're going to run a school for research software engineering. [00:15:16] Karthik and Kyle assembled a course focusing on the best practices for developing sustainable research software by drawing on topics from past workshops and classes they've conducted. [00:17:12] We hear about the commonalities between scientific software sustainability versus normal open source software sustainability, and Karthik explains that scientific software sustainability is unique because it caters to niche groups, making it expensive to build and maintain. [00:20:20] Karthik tells us about a project he's working on with Patrice Lopez and James Howison, to identify what tools researchers use in various domains, how their usage evolves over time, and which clusters of tools drive research in certain areas. [00:23:34] As part of this project, Karthik and his team are using a tool called, GROBID, to process structured documents to XML, extract entities, and analyze the usage of software mentioned in scientific papers. [00:28:23] Karthik highlights the difficulties researchers face in keeping with best practices for code hosting and archival copies and discusses the misconceptions about GitHub being a permanent archive and the need for a safer, more reliable repository like Zenodo. [00:31:31] Richard brings up the issue of measuring the impact of code repositories and whether a similar system to academic journal impact factors could arise. [00:33:02] Karthik details an approach for maintaining academic software. [00:38:02] Find out where you can learn more about Karthik and his work on the web. Quotes [00:07:43] “They would bring their puppy and ask us to adopt it.” [00:15:45] “Even today, we do not have a good appreciation for research software and the role that it plays in driving research on all the things that we care about.” [00:16:21] “Another pet peeve that I have is that people think money is the solution to everything.” [00:16:38] “If we teach more projects about best practices, it's very likely that software that integrates those best practices will actually continue to exist.” [00:17:51] “The challenge with research software is there's a lot of software that sits on the long tail.” [00:28:39] “I think the challenge is that we don't really need to invent anything new.” [00:36:14] “Part of the work we want people to do is invest community early on.” Spotlight [00:38:47] Abby's spotlight is Governing Open by Shauna Gordon-McKeon. Gupta, who comes from a family of highly backable people—including his mother, Damyanti Hingorani, the first woman engineer for Ford Motor Company, and his brother Sanjay Gupta, chief medical correspondent for CNN—will also share advice for how we can all find support, based on his own backing of such companies as Impossible Foods, Airbnb, 23&Me and SpaceX. He will further reveal secrets of success from producers of Oscar-winning films, members of Congress, military leaders, culinary stars, venture capitalists, founders of unicorn-status startups, and executives at iconic companies such as Lego, Method and Pixar. Gupta says he went from being afraid to speak inside a room to running for public office. He went from being rejected by every major investor he pitched to raising millions of dollars of funding from the same investors that backed Google, Uber, and Airbnb. Hilary Mason is a huge name in the data science space, and she has an extensive understanding of what's happening in this space. Today, she answers these questions for us: What are the backgrounds of your typical data scientists? What are key differences between software engineering and data science that most companies get wrong? How should you measure the effectiveness of your work or your team's work as a data scientist for the best results? What is a good approach for creating a successful data product? How can we peak behind the curtain of black-box deep learning algorithms? Below is a partial transcript. For the full interview, listen to the podcast episode by selecting the Play button above or by selecting this link, or you can also listen to the podcast through Apple Podcasts, Google Play, Stitcher, and Overcast. Curtis: Today we hear from one of the biggest thinkers in the data science space, someone who DJ Patil endorses on LinkedIn for data science skills. She worked at bit.ly, the url shortener, and is a data scientist in residence at venture capital firm Accel Partners, a firm that helped fund some companies you may know, like Facebook, Slack, Etsy, Venmo, Vox Media, Lynda.com, Cloudera, Trifacta—and you get the picture. Ginette: The partner of this VC firm said that Accel wouldn’t have brought on just any data scientist. This position was specifically created because this particular data scientist might be able to join their team. Curtis: But beyond her position as data in residence with Accel, she founded a company that’s doing very interesting research, and today, she shares with us some of her experiences and perspective on where AI is headed. Ginette: I’m Ginette. Curtis: And I’m Curtis. Ginette: And you are listening to Data Crunch. Curtis: A podcast about how data and prediction shape our world. Ginette: A Vault Analytics production. Hilary: I'm Hilary Mason, and I'm the founder and CEO of Fast Forward Labs (Please note that Hilary is now the VP of Research at Cloudera). In addition to that, I'm a data science in residence for Accel Partners. And I've been working in what we now call data science, or even now call AI, for about twenty years at this point. Started my career in academic machine learning and decided startups were more fun and have been doing that for about 10,   12 years depending on how you count now, and it's a lot of fun! Ginette: Something I’d like to note here is there’s been a very recent change: Hilary’s company, Fast Forward Labs, and Cloudera recently joined forces, and Hilary’s new position is Vice President of Research at Cloudera. Now, one thing that Hilary talks to is where the data scientists she works with come from, which is a great example of the different paths people take to get into this field. Hilary I am a computer scientist, and I have studied computer science. It's funny because now at Fast Forward, our team only has only two computer scientists on it, and one of them is our general counsel, and one is me, and I'm running the business, so most of the people doing data science here come from very different backgrounds. We have a bunch of physicists, mathematicians, a   neuroscientist, a person who does brilliant machine learning design who was an English major, and so data science is one of those fields where one of the things I really love about it is that people come to it from so many different backgrounds, but mine happens to be computer science. The people on our team at Fast Forward   typically have a PhD in a quantitative field, such as physics, neuroscience, electrical engineering, and then have, through that, learned sufficient programming skill. One of the jokes I make about my team is that we're essentially a halfway house for wayward academics in the sense that we can absorb people and teach them to be good software engineers, help them understand the difference between theoretical machine learning an...

David Hornik has a reputation in venture as one of the nicest and sharpest investors out there. He received Deloitte’s 2013 Venture Capitalist of the Year award and has been honored by Forbes Magazine as a member of its Midas List of top Venture Capitalists. This conversation was fun and David gave a lot of interesting insight. Some of our favorite moments included: (1) what he thinks of the current state of venture (11:05), (2) his adamant belief that we are not in a bubble, though things are overheated and overfunded (17:05), (3) the importance of making others successful and being generous (24:01), and (4) focusing on a happy life, not a successful career (30:10). David colored a lot of these insights via personal anecdotes of times with Jerry Yang, DJ Patil, Dick Costolo, Paul Graham, Reid Hoffman, Travis Kalanick and others.

DJ Patil, America's first Chief Data Scientist, talks about his nearly two years in the White House’s Office of Science and Technology Policy, working on initiatives around health care and policing. Patil grew up in Silicon Valley, and has worked at Skype, LinkedIn and eBay; he says that techies in the private sector should consider a "tour of duty" in the government to be one of their civic duties. He says opening up the vast amounts of data collected by government agencies can make everyone better-off — as long as personal data like health records can be properly secured.
