He leads interactive learning programs to creatively connect people in ways that are joyful, engaging, and good for you. When you join in, you'll feel more vibrant, more relaxed, and more connected to others and to the world around you. In this episode, Dr. Ron Hirschberg sits with Lauren Monroe and Rick Allen: Couple, and Cofounders of Raven Drum Foundation, leading events to heal and build resiliency through the arts for 23 years. Prior to experiencing a community drum circle with over 70 veterans and 1st responders hosted by philanthropist Ernie Boch Jr., Lauren takes us to 2001 - helping Rick through his own trauma with mindfulness, and describes mind-heart-coherence for ourselves and community. Rick reminds us that we are rhythmic beings, how he's seen people open up in a sacred space that the drum circles create, and how in 2006 a visit to Walter Reed Medical Center connected him to injured veterans in a powerful way, bringing us further back to the 1984 accident when he lost his arm, went through rehabilitation, PTSD and discovered new possibilities for a continued career with Def Leppard. Lauren tells us about next identities and training yourself to be the warrior you need to be, and how people can heal their own pain through helping others, and about her song Brave's echoing line, "Shine the light through the dark, and carry what's been broken apart."_______Many thanks To Lauren Monroe and Rick Allen of the Raven Drum Foundation for 23 years and counting- reaching so many people in need of healing. Your service to others is both tangible through feel of the drum, and intangible with the feeling you get when you are mid-way through each drum circle beat. You can learn all about their foundation at https://ravendrumfoundation.org/, for more about Lauren and to catch up on all her new music go to https://laurenmonroe.com/. And of course, remember Def Leppard is on tour this Summer, along with Journey so check out the schedule. I know I'll be at Fenway Park with the good Colonel Dan Arkins cheering on Rick the Thunder God and his band….Thank you to Peggie Rose for all your support and making our conversation happen, and for all you have done to bring veterans and 1st responders together for such a powerful and unique experience. Many thanks to Ernie Boch, Jr. for your generosity and for hosting this event and for allowing our interview amidst classic guitars and inviting vibes. Enjoy Lauren Monroe's song "Brave" at the end of this episode which is featured on her latest album Messages from AphroditeThis episode is dedicated to two members of the Home Base family: Colonel (Ret.) Dan Arkins who is probably practicing the drums somewhere in an undisclosed location while preparing a new mission to conquer the drum kit. And Coreen Field, mom of our own Army Veteran Kelly Field, wife of her late husband Army Veteran Mike Field, and a lifelong Def Leppard fan….______Home Base Nation will be sharing episodes every two weeks up through the Run To Home Base this coming July 27th. One of the great things about podcasting is that I regularly get to meet and have in-depth conversations with fascinating people whose paths I would almost certainly never cross anywhere else. Today's guest, author, speaker and drum circle facilitator Andrew Ecker, is one such person. In this interview, Andrew weaves the rich tale of his life's story, how he found his authentic self, and how that brought him to help others through the tradition of drum circles and sound medicine. We think you'll find this a unique and fascinating journey. So let's get on the road!About Andrew EckerAndrew Ecker, author of the The Sacred 7, Apache “NDE”, Irish and German American. Born into an inheritance of trauma, both his parents were addicted to drugs and died very young. Mom, Kathy Lindsey, died from a cocaine overdose whereas Father, Dale Ecker, from HepC caused from intravenous drug use. Growing up in the height of the Reagan and Clinton “War on Drugs” policies led Andrew down a path of destruction that included cocaine and heroin abuse until he made a decision to change his life while serving 3.5 years in federal prison for drug charges. Andrew found healing in his life through the use of ancient technologies including drumming and a ceremonial introduction process of his Native American ancestry he outlines in his book The Sacred 7.Find out more:Andrew's book: The Sacred 7  (thesacredseven.com)Drumming Sounds (drummingsounds.com) Visit the Authenticity Road website: authenticityroad.onlineConnect with us here.© Authenticity Road, Inc. This interview would never have happened if Suzy and I had not connected first at a conference. It started with a simple hello but pretty quickly escalated from there into full-on Rippling. To say we hit it off and became fast friends would be an understatement. Suzy is the founder of Soulshine Rhythm Experience, and she is quite literally changing lives with her joyful way of teaching music to anyone who will listen. She works with people in recovery, senior centers, hospice patients, and anyone and everyone to help them find their own internal rhythm. Through her monthly drum circles, she has brought thousands of people together to connect with something deep inside of each of us, something primal and hardwired. Spend just a few minutes listening to her passion and you will be as hooked as I am. It's probably why I've invited Suzy to lead our Ripple Membership through a monthly drum lesson as part of our offering. These respites from life's stresses can transform someone's mood, attitude, and outlook on life. I, for one, recently rewatched one of her lessons when I was stuck on a creative problem, and let's just say she helped me find the drum beat of my creativity and helped me finish a project in record time. Awakin Call
Christine Stevens -- Drumming Up Spirit in Nature and Communities

Awakin Call

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 10, 2022

“It is not what music does,” writes Christine Stevens, “it is what music undoes.” In July 2022, as a crimson supermoon lit up the sky in Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming, Christine Stevens sat afloat in a kayak, beholding the still, alpine waters of Jenny Lake and attuning to the wisdom offered by the natural world. When the time was ripe, she reached into her backpack, took out the wooden flute that usually accompanies her, and played a mesmerizing ode to the moon. A certified naturalist, poet, and music therapist who has worked globally with survivors of trauma, war, and disasters, Christine was now preparing for her annual vision quest—alone for four days, fasting, and silent. Deeply connected with music and nature since a young age, Christine grew up in an “outdoorsy family,” adored her grandfather’s tree farm, and learned to play the piano and saxophone. Up until high school, however, she felt alone whenever she performed music. Then one day, she volunteered in a classroom of autistic children. They joined her in playing music together. And it was there that she discovered her life calling, going on to receive two master's degrees—one in music therapy, the other in social work.  Although her current work is comprised in large part by drumming (Upbeat Drum Circles), it wasn’t easy at first. “I thought I had no sense of rhythm at all,” Christine reflects. “I almost failed the percussion class in college.” But she stumbled into a drum circle while attending a music conference and immediately felt transformed by the energy. She learned to play congas and improvise freely. Inspired by the ease of handling drums, their spiritual depth, and historical significance, Christine became a “musical ambassador of peace,” bringing their healing potential to communities touched by significant trauma: Columbine High School, Ground Zero after 9/11, and Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. Most recently, she worked with Iraqi refugees and created the first drum circle training program in northern Iraq. As a member of an integrative research team, she has published multiple studies on the scientific benefits of group drumming, including research that showed an increase in immunity and T-cells in participants of drum circles. Her book, Music Medicine: The Science and Spirit of Healing Yourself With Sound, goes deeper into music as a healing modality and teaches a paradigm of music that integrates the four directions and four elements with the four dimensions of the human being.  When it comes to spiritual background and beliefs, Christine is a self-described “smogasbordian.” She has been influenced by The Soul Saving Station for Every Nation, the Quakers, the Sufi lineage of Hazrat Inayat Khan, and the Agape International Spiritual Center in Los Angeles—the latter in which her co-leading of the Drum Ministry has “really helped [her] consciousness of positive thought and affirmative prayer.” In her forties, she was adopted into the Lakota people after a sweat lodge purification ceremony and elaborate offerings of song, feast, and gifts. In addition to grassroots communities, Christine has also worked with the Department of Defense and many Fortune 500 companies including DuPont, Disney, and Verizon. For the general public, she offers multiple YouTube videos teaching simple rhythms with drummers from around the world.  Her other books include The Nature Sutras, The Healing Drum Kit, and The Art and Heart of Drum Circles. She is a contributing writer for magazines like US News and World Report, Fitness, and The Christian Science Monitor.  Ultimately, she feels her mission is to embody, with or without instruments, the music that moves through her and to support others in realizing that they, too, are music. Please join Mina Lee in conversation with this musician and poet of Earth’s wild beauty, and learn with us some ways to awaken through rhythmic and playful expression.

I met Taylor Cooper at a men's group about 18 months ago. This men's group practiced meditation and created a space for men to express themselves. Taylor stood out in the group so I followed him on Instagram. He soon later posted a picture of him crying on Insta. That picture really bothered me for a while. Why would a man put a picture up on social media of him crying? Over time I have really grown to appreciate and respect the work that Taylor is doing. Taylor helps people to find their own healing. In this podcast Taylor talks about what he does and what his Conquer You Experience offers. He leads drum circles, yoga, helps people build sweat lodges, and so much more. Check out the podcast to hear about his work. Taylor helps run a mens group now called Utah Men's Circle. They meet 1-2 times a month. James Corrigan is a dear friend of mine and I don't say that lightly, I met him with our dear friend Alicia Hogan many moons ago and he's introduced me to many musicians such as Homeboy Sandman who I've also had on Wear Many Hats and is a dear friend as well. James is the Senior Director of Visual Merchandising that oversees brands such as Allen Edmonds and Naturalizer and has been in fashion for quite some time now. But the hats he wears closely is being a musician. James will be releasing his new piece entitled Drum Circle where it is composed of 10 tracks that expand from a wide range of music from free jazz to minimalist pieces as well as art rock. James is one of my first friends in NYC, the first in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.
