As I prepare this episode, we still don't know the result of the US elections. I hope this episode will give you a break from the stress of the election campaign. Last week, we were in the Jura mountains. We went for a walk with Eric Wolff, a naturalist guide, around the village of Etival. After climbing ‘Le Mont Paradis', where we were able to observe a number of different plant species, we went back down a wooded path to look for animal tracks - there were traces of wild boar. In the notes that accompany the transcript, there will be photos of the walk, but we're also going to look at a word that occurs three times in the text, but in different contexts. If you have time, I'll suggest that you send me a mini-story about the wolf or a phrase to repeat on the podcast answering machine. So, to cultivate your French, the slow way, I invite you to follow in the footsteps of the wolf, er, of the other subscribers. www.cultivateyourfrench.com

Divorce is a word that often comes loaded with uncertainty and an avalanche of questions. Ryan and Amy revisit one of our most impactful episodes, they aim to answer our top questions we get in initial divorce consultations. They shed light on the implications of no-fault divorce laws, the concept of marital waste, and if extramarital affairs might tilt the scales in legal proceedings in Colorado, especially when it comes to children and parenting time. They also discuss crafting plans that keep children at the heart of every decision. Our fictional divorce client Eric Wolff's concerns about his wife's possible alcohol issues and his own deep involvement with their children lead them into the nuances of shared parenting responsibilities and decision-making. They elucidate the common misconceptions when it comes to dividing property, like the notion that property ownership is clear-cut, and dive into how separate property might blur into marital assets. What is Divorce at Altitude? Ryan Kalamaya and Amy Goscha provide tips and recommendations on issues related to divorce, separation, and co-parenting in Colorado. Ryan and Amy are the founding partners of an innovative and ambitious law firm, Kalamaya | Goscha, that pushes the boundaries to discover new frontiers in family law, personal injuries, and criminal defense in Colorado. Years ago, a company built a natural gas pipeline in St. Louis to help meet an alleged increase in demand. Now, even though the pipeline has been up and running for two years, a federal court rejected its permit, saying regulators failed to follow their own rules in evaluating its necessity. Micaela, Felicia and Lisa were eagers to go to the Centre Equestre and ride horses. On Tuesday afternoon, Pietro and I went to the village of Etival for a botanical walk with the guide Eric Wolff. He’s a nature guide and we know him from last year. They were five of us to follow him to the Mont Paradis, a hill situated just outside the village. On the way, we regurlaly stopped to have a look at different shrubs with fruits. Eric Wolff gave us some explanation about those fruits, but he also told us about some stories about the village. For example, the famous stay in Etival in 1912 of the painters Francis Picabia, Marcel Duchamps and the poet Guillaume Apollinaire. He also told us that the name Etival comes a word in latin that means « Summer » because a Roman legion was staying there every summer. We finally got on the Mont Paradis which used to be a pasture. This is where today’s episode starts.

One of Trump’s key promises to the coal industry was rolling back environmental regulations -- and it helped him win in key states back in 2016. Has the loss from Greenland’s vast ice sheet reached a tipping point? According to glaciologist Michalea King, the rate at which its ice flows into the sea stepped up about 15 years ago. The process of glacial retreat is outpacing the accumulation snow and ice in Greenland’s interior and the loss of Greenland’s ice to the Ocean is set to continue for many years to come. An international study of past climate changes during the last ice age reveals how fast changes to weather patterns and climate states can reverberate around the world. During the last ice age, when temperatures rose suddenly in Greenland a series of changes to the climate in Europe and the monsoons in Asia and South America occurred almost simultaneously - within decades of each other. Climate scientists Eric Wolff and Ellen Corrick have discovered this through studies of stalagmites from caves around the world. It’s a demonstration of how rapidly and dramatically the Earth’s atmospheric system can change when it’s perturbed. Was the hottest temperature ever on Earth recorded last weekend? A weather station in Death Valley in California recorded a temperature of 54.4 degrees C. Roland Pease discusses the controversy with extreme weather historian Christopher Burt. Andrea Dupree of Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics reveals the latest on the giant star Betelgeuse which to everyone’s amazement dimmed dramatically at the beginning of the year. At the time some people wondered whether it was about to explode as a supernova but Andrea’s new findings suggest an event at the star which is almost as extraordinary. If you’re one of the millions of people who used lockdown to try something new like baking sourdough bread, you may well be wondering what’s happening chemically inside your loaf, especially if the end result keeps changing. Well, you’re not alone. Listeners Soheil and Sean are both keen bakers but want to know more about the thing that makes bread rise: yeast. What is yeast? Where does it come from and can you catch it? And how hard is it to ‘make’ yourself? Soon after lockdown took effect, commercial supplies of the stuff disappeared from supermarket shelves across the globe. The shortage also affected brewers the world over. A big fan of yeast in most of its forms, Marnie Chesterton took on the challenge of creating her own. She talks to the brewers who hunt rare strains to create the perfect beer, and hears from the biologist who says these amazing microbes, used for thousands of years, could be used to make food production more sustainable. And she discovers how this simple ingredient could be instrumental in the fight against climate change. (Image: Masses of ice break off from the edge of a glacier. Credit: Press Association)
