Why should we eat Cloned meat when organic food is not extinct.
The European Union took a step toward adapting its food production to the new ways of the world: The 27-nation bloc wants to embrace the latest gene techniques it hopes will help safely counter global challenges like climate change and shortages. For decades, the EU was conservative in allowing the use of genetically modified organisms — which often brought up connotations of Frankenfood rather than improved crop production — while the United States and others quickly adopted the new bioengineered technologies. However, the EU's executive commission threw its weight behind so-called new genomic techniques, which seek to change organisms in a much less intrusive way than the GMOs of old, and to allow many to be sold without special labeling. “In many ways, new genomic techniques can give you the same results as through conventional and natural selection, or through targeted crossbreeding, but with much more speed, precision and efficiency,” European Commission Vice President Frans Timmermans said. The new techniques are intended to make plants better able to withstand drought while requiring fewer pesticides and to create products with better color and more consistency that are more attractive to consumers. Unsurprisingly, large farming companies welcomed the EU's plans and environmentalists mounted opposition. The proposal is only the start of a drawn-out process since member nations and the European Parliament must endorse the plans before they can become reality. Environmentalists are fully alarmed again, fearing that the newest tools still pose too many dangers and must undergo much better testing. “Whether it's a toy or a face cream, any product on the market needs to be safety tested. Why would there be an exemption for GMOs that end up in our fields or on our plates,” said Eva Corral of Greenpeace. "Biotech companies have long considered these safety procedures an unnecessary bother and it's disappointing to see the commission agree with them.” If done right, the proposal will ensure European competitiveness, lower emissions and more food globally, European Parliament member Jessica Polfjärd said. Have no doubt, we face dangerous chemical weapons in our war for justice. They are developed, perfected and sold by evil corporations. The hospital hell and a per patient bounty of 100k. A horrific mishmash of evil. The fear factors are how the gov't does everything. Malaria, HIV, and what discoveries they suppressed. The goal was to keep Africa in the dark. Hemophilia, blood chemistry and the clot shots. The history of I.G. Farben, German roots and Frankenfood. RNA serves as a prime vector. How could they delete something from WikiLeaks? You might as well include weather modification. Three things to fix are elections, state's sovereignty, and too many federal employees. Big pharma overrides local opposition. Looking forward to laboratory food. Targeting perfect genes. Selective kidnapping is real. The big five are oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, carbon and phosphorous. A ring of fire and spontaneous human combustion. Burning mysteries and pharma history. There is rising talk of a new chemical war tribunal. Informed patriots must rely on each other, because achieve justice is up to us. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

On this episode of the NTEB Prophecy News Podcast, if I was a date setter, which I am not, but if I was I could make a pretty good case for the years 2020, 2021 and 2022 being the last 3 years before the Pretribulation Rapture of the Church takes place, with the time of Jacob's trouble starting in 2023 and ending in 2030. There's your 7 years in a nice, neat little package. Why do I say that? Because of the vast preponderance of Bible verses with the numbers 20, 21 and 22 all pointing to the end of the Church Age. (Places like Revelation 3:20-22, Revelation 22:20,21, and a couple dozen more besides that). Another reason I might speculate along these lines is because of the Agenda 2030 which seems to be the year that the New World Order is anticipating the culmination of their takeover. In the meantime on this episode of the Prophecy News Podcast, Bill Gates and his Goalkeepers 2030 Agenda is something you absolutely need to know about, all this and more! Have you heard of something called Goalkeepers 2030? I only learned of it over the weekend, and let me tell you, if you think Bill Gates is slowing down in his end times quest to turn the 1970's camp classic movie 'Soylent Green' into a documentary, you would be mistaken. Bill Gates is America's largest farmland owner, and what he intends to grow on all that land is nothing short of a horror show. Welcome to Day 931 of 15 Days To Flatten The Curve.

As the old adage goes, you are what you eat. But do you really know what you are eating on a daily basis? You might be surprised to find out that the institutions in charge of keeping our food safe are really not as interested in your health as you think. In episode 39, we sit down with long time GMO activist John Diaz as he breaks down the corporate monster that is the bio tech industry and gives you tips on how to avoid Frankenfood Fever! For full episodes check out deadrabbitssociety.com!2008 Presidential Panel on Cancer: https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/#imp/FMfcgxwLtGqDjZpnPLxtZVTVGdMnlZTh?projector=1&messagePartId=0.1GM Watch, Michael Antoniou, a London-based molecular geneticist, explained that significant changes could occur due to genetic editing, in both agricultural and medical contexts, necessitating long-term safety and toxicity studies. He explained:15"Many of the genome editing-induced off-target mutations, as well as those induced by the tissue culture, will no doubt be benign in terms of effects on gene function. However, many will not be benign and their effects can carry through to the final marketed product, whether it be plant or animal …Thus not only is it necessary to conduct whole genome sequencing to identify all off-target mutations from CRISPR-based genome editing, but it is also essential to ascertain the effects of these unintended changes on global patterns of gene function.… In addition, it is important to acknowledge that the targeted intended change in a given gene may also have unintended effects. For example, the total disruption or modification of an enzyme function can lead to unexpected or unpredictable biochemical side-reactions that can markedly alter the composition of an organism, such as a food crop. The compositional alterations in food products produced with genome editing techniques will not be fully revealed by the molecular profiling methods due to the current inherent limitations of these techniques. So it is still necessary to conduct long-term toxicity studies in established animal model systems. In the absence of these analyses, to claim that genome editing is precise and predictable is based on faith rather than science."Gene Editing May Not Be as Precise as It SeemsResearchers at the U.K.'s Wellcome Sanger Institute systematically studied mutations from CRISPR-Cas9 in mouse and human cells, focusing on the gene-editing target site. Large genetic rearrangements were observed, including DNA deletions and insertions, that were spotted near the target site. They were far enough away, however, that standard tests looking for CRISPR-related DNA damage would miss them. The DNA deletions could end up activating genes that should stay "off," such as cancer-causing genes, as well as silencing those that should be "on."16CRISPR-Cas9 also leads to the activation of the p53 gene, which works to either repair the DNA break or kill off the CRISPR-edited cell.17 CRISPR actually has a low efficacy rate for this reason, and CRISPR-edited cells that survive are able to do so because of a dysfunctional p53.The problem is that p53 dysfunction is also linked to cancer (including close to half of ovarian and colorectal cancers and a sizable portion of lung, pancreatic, stomach, breast and liver cancers as well).18https://www.nexusnewsfeed.com/article/science-futures/genetic-editing-of-animals-has-horrible-side-effects/#GMOs #Monsanto #frankenfood #bigpharma #bigagra #glyphosate #rounduplawsuits #roundup #geneticallymodifiedorganism #covidvaccine #vaccinecourt #yesonprop37 #billgates #eugenics #dupont #dowchemical #leakygut #crisprgeneediting #presidentialpaneloncancer #johndiaz #goldenrice #mrnatechnology #rockefeller #algore #sunrisemovement #gmoinsulin #georgesoros #depopulation
Sam Parr (@TheSamParr) and Shaan Puri (@ShaanVP):MFM #158Rewarding hustle: MFM is hiring two kids to do video production because they took the job without permission. They heard Sam complain about needing a recording studio and offered to do the work https://twitter.com/DylanJardon/status/1366274333858017282?s=20. This is how you get the job you want. Don’t send a resume. Do the work instead. Don’t ask for permission.Food topicsThe food companies of Instagram: Companies mycookiedealer.com, 1-900-Ice-Cream, and Allie’s Banana Bread are crushing it on IG with food drops that sell out in seconds. Why it’s big: These work because it’s at the intersection of many trends: cloud kitchens (no need for expensive restaurant infrastructure), DTC (no need to get costly distribution deals and shelf space) and have virality baked into them.My Cookie Dealer is estimated to be doing $200k per weekly drop. This is a potential $10m business today.Formula: Sam breaks down how these companies are going viral, and how you can copy.Make a side ingredient the main thing (cheese, cookie dough)Make it in an unusual color (rainbow bagel, rainbow kettle cork, green ketchup, cloud bread)Make it huge (huge sundae, massive pizza cookie, sushi rito, massive kit kat)Frankenfood: combine two different foods (cronut, pancake cereal, donut cereal, cream cheese, bell pepper, desert burger, ramen burger, spaghetti donuts, fairy bread)Food allergy or remove stuff from it (vega ice cream, Banza)Make junk food or simple food ultra-fancy (tater tots, mozzarella sticks)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2IFYt20QON8 Opportunities: So what’re the opportunities here? The guys break it down.#1: Rolling up these brands like IMGM did for meme pages or Thrasio is doing for ecom. A collection of profitable IG food businesses lowers costs (everything can be done in the same kitchen) and lowers risk (if one fad food falls out of favor, the business doesn’t die).#2: Guy Fieri of IG. Food reviews are extremely popular when paired with the right personality. Guy Fieri is the Gen X version of this. Dave Portnoy is the pizza version of this. Who will be the millennial/Gen Z IG/TikTok star?#3: Cold chain. Cold chain demand is skyrocketing with the increase of foods being shipped. Further, any company that can make the process of shipping these foods easier, will win.#4: “Eat this, Not That” for 2021. Extremely popular book series from ~15 years ago. There are similar pages doing this on social media today, but no one has made a big business out of it yet.Tiller moneySpreadsheet plugins: The guys have talked Chrome plugins and browser extensions in the past, but an overlooked niche is spreadsheet plugins.Plugins are great businesses because they are sticky and capitalize on an existing platform and user base. They can be light, simple tools that can gain huge adoption quickly. Tiller Money (https://www.tillerhq.com/): Personal finance nerd Sam loves the simplicity of this plugin. Most people already manage their money on a spreadsheet... See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

For many people, those attitudes are adopted rather informally from the surrounding culture, rather than arising out of rigorous personal reflection. Each new generation of people doesn’t invent the rules of living from scratch; we inherit ideas and values that have evolved over vast stretches of time. At the moment, the dominant image of the world remains one in which human life is cosmically special and significant, something more than mere matter in motion. We need to do better at reconciling how we talk about life’s meaning with what we know about the scientific image of our universe.”This episode was recorded in January 2020The “Beautiful Illusions Theme” was performed by Darron Vigliotti (guitar) and Joseph Vigliotti (drums), and was written and recorded by Darron Vigliotti
Ingredients like "natural flavorings & colorings" and "rosemary extract" sound benign...until you dig deeper and find out how these terms misrepresent the ingredients that are actually in our food. Today, nutritionist Cyndi O'Meara of Changing Habits, and author of "Lab to Table," peels back food labels, revealing the dark underbelly of the food industry: how our health is being sacrificed for profit. Cyndi defines terms and explains how we're in a new age of biotechnology that allows chemists to genetically modify micro-organisms (not just crops) and insert them into our food. And then said micro-organisms are labeled with familiar names like "citric acid." Cyndi discusses questionable ingredients in synthetic meats and foods labeled "natural." And she also offers suggestions for how to avoid becoming lab rats in this grand experiment. The first step is to take our health into our own hands. This includes buying local food, from trusted farmers, and getting back into the kitchen, making meals out of single-ingredient foods. Frankenfoods, GMOs, GM seeds, transgenic crops: call them what you will, genetically-modified foods are everywhere in the food chain. The dangers are proven. Why, then, hasn't the FDA worked harder at regulation?
When losing weight, you've got to stick to the rules and follow the program. But once you get to maintenance, it’s all about finding what works for you over the long term. People often come to think there's only one way to eat for everybody - that is just simply not true. Now, we do believe that there's never really a place for processed Frankenfood crap. Talking of having Slurpees from a 7-Eleven every day, and having Ding Dongs and Ho Hos every day, there's not a place for that, but other than those foods, there really isn't just one way to eat for every single person. There's just not one right way, and that's how Code Red was born. The program was born because I got heavy and fat. I put on quite a bit of weight even though I was exercising three to five hours a day. When I realized that it was all diet-related, and that exercise had nothing to do with losing weight, I created Code Red as a mixture of many different programs. It is a mixture of Atkins, paleo, Mediterranean, keto - lots of different things. I mixed them all and came up with Code Red, so you're going to see things that they allow on keto, that we don't allow on Code Red. Once you lose your weight on Code Red, we transition you to a maintenance group, and we encourage our rebels to find what works for them because they might be a little different. We're really strict during weight loss, but during maintenance, although we still have our core values and rules in place, we do want you to mess with the formula, just in case you think you are missing something or you think you want to try something else out. You need to have the right plan for you to match your goals and to whatever is going on in your life, right then. For instance, if you are training for a marathon, and you are in our maintenance group, we are going to change your diet a bit. We’re going to help you determine what carbs you need to help fuel you for that marathon. If your goal is to get super shredded and super lean, we're going to keep you on Code Red. I might even put you on a carnivorous diet, I don't know. And so we're really going to adjust you down, but you have to find what works for you. In the short term, we want you to eat according to Code Red. We want you to stay strict. I want you to stick to the food list. Do not deviate from your custom program plan. You do exactly what I say until every last drop is gone, and then, I switch to playing the long game - What can we do for you long term, that is going to keep this weight off for the rest of your life. Weight loss and maintenance modes are not that different, but there are going to be some shifts. To know more, stay tuned as Cari and I explain to you how one size just does not fit everybody. Key Points of Discussion: He's able to build muscle on veganism; not everybody is that way (6:28) Code Red was born as a mixture of many different programs (6:44) We encourage our rebels to find out what works for them in maintenance mode (7:48) Be wary of too much stress on your body in the fat-burning mode (8:09) We change people's food when they’re on maintenance as per their goal (12:05) What works for me, might not work for Cari (12:05) Different case: She's not exercising. She doesn't have a big calorie demand… (13:12) I don't want you coming to Code Red just for short-term ends (15:48) I don't want to see you add certain foods back in, but there are some foods you can, if it works for you (16:32) What are you eating now and how is that working? (17:25) We have a very strategic protocol to transitioning you into maintenance. And it's only adding one thing at a time (18:27) What is working for you right now may not be what works down the road (20:12) Being a “nutrivore”, meaning picking the best quality you can, of your food, and finding the eating style that works for you (26:38) It’s about accountability, and long-term sustainability (28:01) You can’t take Phentermine every day for the rest of your life and expect it not to hurt your body, but you can do Code Red every day for the rest of your life (28:18) If you clean up your diet, you can find out what is going to work for you (30:05) We only want what you can keep up with for the rest of your life - for you to keep your weight down and still feel good (32:25) --------------------------------------------- Additional Resources: Get your FREE copy of the On-The-Go Guide for Code Red approved food here: http://bit.ly/on-the-go-guide You can find out more about Cristy and the topic covered in this episode by checking out her website here. --------------------------------------------- Lose your first, next, or last 10 pounds with absolutely NO pills, powders, shakes, or exercise required. Intro: Chandra’s mom: Minutes 0 to :30 Chandra’s mom is doing better and is being moved into a facility where she can receive physical therapy. Chandra took care of some tricky insurance issues and her mom should be fully covered. Candace Bushnell and our aging parents: Minutes :30 to 8 Candace Bushnell decided to move to the Hamptons with her friends, which makes Chandra think about her mom’s preparations for retirement. We talk about caring for our aging parents. My parents moved away a year ago and I miss them so much. Chandra cared for her father in his later years and doesn’t want to be in a similar situation with her mom. We conclude it’s a PITA either way. Candace also talked about turning 50 and how it feels like you’re erased. We compare this to Gwyneth Paltrow’s perspective that she’s no longer the hot young thing. Duchess Meghan guest edited British Vogue and has another charity project: Minutes 8 to 19 We wonder why British Vogue released so many exclusive stories around Duchess Meghan’s guest edit of the September issue within a 24 hour news period. We both found Meghan’s writing tedious and too self-referential. This is our job so we have a different perspective on it and more experience of course. (For the record I did use the word “nestled” in a story once in 2011, however I was mirroring another description and didn’t come up with the word on my own.) Meghan did a capsule collection to benefit her patronage Smart Works, which provides interview training and wardrobes for women returning to the workforce. This was a clever and practical way to benefit this charity. Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes did a PDA-filled Miami pool photoshoot: Minutes 19 to 22 Camila Cabello, 22, and Shawn Mendes, 20, have been linked since they did the Senorita video in late June. We heard around the time it dropped that Camila had split with her boyfriend of about a year. In mid July there was a weird video of Camila and Shawn making out at a diner and they just did an old school Miami pool photoshoot where they’re kissing and hugging on each other. So many outlets had those photos, they’re not exclusives at all meaning that plenty of photographers were there and they’re so much fun. It really looks like a PR rollout but it’s fun. Frankenfood treats: Minutes 22 to 25:30 We discuss two new frankenfood treats, pumpkin pie Kit Kat and French’s mustard ice cream. Our old white chocolate feud gets reignited and Chandra is disgusted that I’ll try the pumpkin pie Kit Kats. I love mustard and defend good mustards. We can’t try the mustard ice cream as it’s only available in limited locations. User Questions: Minutes 25:30 to 28 Our user question is from CT on Twitter who asked us about our favorite celebrity feud. Chandra says there are a lot of depressing divorce feuds and her favorite fun feud is Taylor Swift vs. Kim Kardashian. She also like Nicki Minaj vs. Miley Cyrus and fondly remembers the Kristen Stewart scandal. Comments of The Week: Minutes 28 to 30 My comment of the week is from Sleanne on a post about Eva Longoria’s sister, who has an intellectual disability. Sleanne works in a residential home and wrote about her experiences there. Chandra’s COTW is Zapp Brannigan on the Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes post. Thanks for listening bitches!
Back in his student days, science writer and journalist Mark Lynas was one of the first and loudest voices of the anti-GMO movement. He wrote some of the most-read articles about genetically modified organisms, led protests, and may or may not have coined the term “Frankenfood”. But then he really looked into the science of GMO, and did a full 180. In a world-famous speech in 2013, Mark retracted his earlier views, and apologised for having destroyed GM crops. He’s since worked with smallholder farmers in Asia and Africa who, use GMO to better cope with pests, diseases and droughts. He is still an activist, but now he forefronts science in his activism.
The Earful Gang serves up some specials in this ep... But instead of meatloaf muzzarell from the homeland, it's deep analysis of the menacing meta-romantic-comedy overtures of Brian Flanagan! And instead of Chicken a la King (a la Delmonico's), we dive deep into abortion and how societal expectations of loyalty fit into gender roles! And in lieu of ketchup for your fries, we have so much more: cameos from Yolandi Visser and other stalwarts of the Toronto theatre scene, rating YouTube comments by creepiness, and a rare successful match in "Key Line Pie." Featuring a guest (and a magnificent three-way sync) in Matt Apfel, longtime "Cocktail" aficionado and formerly of "Frankenfood" (not a plug).

2 Docs Talk: The podcast about healthcare, the science of medicine and everything in between.
One of the latest technological advances in food production is the introduction of GMOs, or genetically modified organisms, to the food supply. They have the potential to offer many benefits including increased productivity, pest and herbicide resistance, longer shelf life, and the list goes on. But many are concerned that this relatively new technology isn’t safe – for health, the environment or the economy. We dig into the evidence surrounding GMOs in this episode. One of the latest technological advances in food production is the introduction of GMOs, or genetically modified organisms, to the food supply. They have the potential to offer many benefits including increased productivity, pest and herbicide resistance, longer shelf life, and the list goes on. But many are concerned that this relatively new technology isn't safe - for health, the environment or the economy. We dig into the evidence surrounding GMOs in this episode. We might even share an opinion or two. Resources: Primer on the retracted study that indicated GMOs caused tumors How GMOs are tested for safety

With ocean views, a celebrity chef and the freshest seafood available, Lure Fishbar inside the Loews Miami Beach Hotel has quickly gained a large following since its opening in December 2013. Chat Chow TV sat down with Josh Capon, the Executive Chef and partner, to learn more about Lure, how it stacks up to the NYC outpost and what he has in store for Miami. Lure Fishbar has been an institution in NYC for more than 10 years — it’s so popular in fact that their was a social media outcry when rumors circulated that it may be closing. While the original outpost is still very much in business, the owner of the Lowes had been a big fan of the restaurant and convinced Capon and his team to come down to Miami. “We thought the space, the timing and location was perfect,” notes Capon. “And I think we’ve created something really special here.” While the restaurant’s menu has many similarities to its NYC sister location, such as fresh seafood towers, sushi and its famous Bash Burger, the menu also features unique dishes that showcase European and Latin flavors like Seared Diver Sea Scallops with Steamed Clams and Chorizo and Steamed Red Snapper with served Veracruz style. Heading up the bar program is bartending veteran Robert Ferrara, who has created a menu featuring creative cocktails filled with fresh ingredients that are perfect for its Miami Beach setting. Capon himself is a big fan. “He’s constantly coming up with new, inventive seasonal cocktails that blow people away,” adds Capon. “He’s a huge talent, an absolute pleasure, and we’re very lucky to have him.” Capon has plenty of exciting projects in the works, most notably his new half hour food competition show titled “Frankenfood” which just began to air on Spike TV this month. Want to learn the secret to Capon’s award-winning Bash Burger? Or find out how to get yourself a (possibly) complimentary drink? Watch the video above to find out all of that and more.

GMO: Label or Not? Jesus Arredondo, Principal and Founder, Advantage Government Consulting LLC Kent Bradford, Ph.D., Director of the Seed Biotechnology Center, University of California, Davis Ken Cook, President, Environmental Working Group Jessica Lundberg, Lundberg Family Farms Greg Dalton, Founder of Climate One, Moderator Proposition 37 on the upcoming California ballot is a high-stakes food fight with national implications. The measure would bring California, and by extension the United States, in line with the various GMO disclosure requirements already in place in Europe, Australia and Japan. Advocates for GMO labeling say consumers have a right to know if they are eating "Frankenfood." Food companies, led by Monsanto, Cargill, and General Mills, along with other critics, say disclosure would be misleading and alarm consumers. A Reuters story recently reported the proposition “could upend the U.S. food business from farm to fork if it prompts makers of popular foods to dump GMO ingredients.” What do we know about the safety of food with GMO ingredients? How would labeling impact the national food system? How much would it cost? Polls indicate voters favor GMO disclosure, but opponents, led by Monsanto, have a hefty war chest. Join a lively debate about one of the most controversial issues in the upcoming election. This program was recorded in front of a live audience at The Commonwealth Club of California in San Francisco on October 25, 2012

High on my special list of pathologically destructive corporations is Monsanto. Though their sins are legion, I’m going to focus on perhaps their most evil activity of all – their attempt to control virtually all farmers and all crop seeds, and to force those same farmers to use their genetically altered crops and toxic agri-chemicals.Although this is hard to believe, farmers have been successfully sued by Monsanto when Monsanto’s genetically-modified soybean and canola plants have shown up in their fields, carried there by birds and the wind. One Canadian farmer, who had been selectively breeding his own canola plants with his wife for decades, was sued when some of these Monsanto plants were found growing in a ditch alongside his property. This is where the entire affair, which is not unique to this one farmer, becomes positively Kafkaesque. Monsanto contended that this man had essentially stolen their seeds. They asked the court to levy a hefty fine, take all of the profits from his current canola crop, and most insidiously, they also asked the court to seize the man’s own proprietary canola breeds, the product of 50 years of careful selective breeding. Because of a few plants found in a ditch, Monsanto not only wanted to bankrupt this farmer, they wanted to steal his intellectual property as well.As utterly bizarre as it seems , the court upheld Monsanto’s claims in full. But this was no ordinary farmer. He appealed to Canada’s Saskatchewan appellate court, where the 3 justice panel again upheld Monsanto’s position. He appealed once more, this time to Canada’s Supreme Court, which agreed to hear the case. Somewhere along the line, Monsanto must have felt the winds of change, because they suddenly agreed to an out-of-court settlement. Not only will this brave farmer keep his seeds, and not pay any fines, but Monsanto will be legally liable for eliminating any of their contaminating GMO canola that finds its way onto his land. He has won, but thousands like him are daily being bullied, stolen from, and often bankrupted by this giant company that literally seeks control over the world’s seed supply. Monsanto’s contracts, signed by any farmer who wants to use their seed, say it all:The farmer cannot use his own seeds at all; he must only buy seeds from MonsantoThe farmer can only use Monsanto chemical fertilizers, insecticides and herbicides.Monsanto’s private investigative force, mostly composed of highly-coercive ex-law-enforcement officers is permitted to search their land whenever they want, without notice, for 3 years after they stop using Monsanto seed. Most incredibly: The farmer can never sue Monsanto. He must waive all rights to future lawsuits for any reason. When Monsanto and the other big GMO companies first started pushing their ‘Frankenfood’ products, they claimed that they would never interbreed with other strains, and would never ‘escape into the wild’. Just the opposite is true: all over Canada and the USA, their GMO canola can be found, spreading like an invasive weed. It’s in ditches everywhere, and it’s crowding out other strains. Indeed, it looks as if it’s now virtually impossible to grow completely non-GMO soy or canola anywhere on this continent. And just what are their seeds genetically modified to do? In the case of their canola, it’s called ‘Roundup Ready’, which means that the plants have been genetically modified to be highly resistant to Monsanto’s toxic Roundup herbicide. This allows canola farmers to blitz their fields with heretofore unheard of levels of toxic herbicides, a sort of slow-motion agent-oranging of the entire American and Canadian heartland. The creation of plants that will allow even more poisoning of the land, even more toxic residues in our foodstuffs, even more depletion of bees, butterflies and other natural pollinators is doubly, triply evil. The Europeans have been way ahead of us on this, banning GMO foods. A small band of Organic farmers is currently suing Monsanto for destroying their plant strains and infecting their fields. Not only do we need to support this David and Goliath struggle, but it’s time we revisit the entire GMO question. It’s time to ban all new GMO crops, and not just from commercial use, but from research plots too. GMO wheat is growing in small plots all over the US and Canada. Wheat is, of course, a relative of grass, and spreads just as readily. The fallacy that GMO plants can be segregated has been proven over and over. It’s time to take action and petition the Obama administration to follow Europe’s lead and ban GMO crops and crop research. Genetically modified agricultural plants (cotton, soybeans, corn and canola, for example) have been grown in North America for 16 years and food derived from them marketed for almost as long. “Contrary to the impression the Greenpeace label “Frankenfood” conveys, increasing the food derived from genetically modified plants is essential for environmental protection and a safe abundant supply of food in the future,” Thompson said. In his lecture, Thompson will present the case supporting his claim. Thompson holds appointments as a professor and director in the Institute for the History and Philosophy of Science and Technology; in the departments of ecology and evolutionary biology, cell and systems biology, and philosophy; and also with the Joint Centre for Bioethics. He has published extensively on evolutionary theory, population genetics, mathematical modelling in biology, theory structure in biology, and ethics. He is the author of three books “The Structure of Biological Theories,” “The Moral Question,” and “Agro-Technology,” available in July from Cambridge University Press, and he is editor of Issues in Evolutionary Ethics. He has held numerous consulting positions with governments and industry. He is a member of the Research Integrity Committee and the standing committee on Ethics of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and is a member of The Expert Panel on Biodiversity sponsored by Council of Canadian Academies. He is a past president and a director of the Green Door Alliance Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving agricultural land. UA’s department of philosophy is part of UA’s College of Arts and Sciences, the University’s largest division and the largest liberal arts college in the state.
Many believe organic food is better. Many also believe genetically engineered foods pose greater risks to human health and the environment. Yet the scientific consensus is just the opposite. Why is it so widely ignored?
