Probably the most inspired and provocative conversation I've ever had on the nature of time and human creativity.Joining me for this trialogue are Eric Wargo, author of From Nowhere: Artists, Writers, and the Precognitive Imagination (previously on FF episodes 117 and 171), and J.F. Martel, author of Reclaiming Art in The Age of Artifice and co-host (with Phil Ford) of Weird Studies podcast (previously on FF episodes 18, 71, 126, and 214). Our discussion centers on the concept of precognition — the ability to perceive future events — as the mechanism of all human creative activity. Both Eric and J.F. argue that art, like shamanistic practices, acts as a means of accessing and expressing precognitive experiences, often manifesting as seemingly coincidental events or uncanny correspondences between art and reality. We talk about the role of trauma and dissociation in stimulating creative breakthroughs — why there seems to be a direct biological and psychological link between suffering, displacement, and the discovery of radical new insights and modes of being. Can we create without destroying, or are rupture and connection one thing? We also examine how emerging media through the ages have shaped our experience of time. Starting with the earliest Paleolithic artifacts and the role of cave art in facilitating or encoding ecstatic experience, we trace the evolution of art through to how the development “the cut” in modern cinema led to new ideas of causality. Each new medium provides novel ways of thinking about leaps across space and time, and their study offers new points of entry into a unifying philosophy of rupture and discontinuity.Lastly, we explore some of my own most potent and disquieting precognitive experiences in light of Eric's argument that the UFO phenomenon may actually be the braided precognitive experiences of future human beings and symbiotic artificial intelligences — a thesis that sheds new light on everything from the lives and work of Philip K. Dick, Jacques Vallée, Carl Jung, Andrei Tarkovsky, to The Book of Ezekiel.Where we're going, we won't need roads…Speaking of art, UFOs, psychedelic experience, and time machines, here's the standalone music video for the song we discuss in this episode that was inspired by my UFO (or were they time machine) experiences in 2007. I threw it back in as a coda to the episode but in case you want to view it in its original resolution and in the context of the entire album, here you go. The “8:33” section starts around 3:58:✨ ChaptersChapter 1: Introduction (0:00:00)Chapter 2: Precognitive Imagination in the Arts (0:08:57)Chapter 3: The Personal is Precognitive (0:13:34)Chapter 4: The Cut and the Leap (0:22:15)Chapter 5: The Brain as a Fast-Forwarder (0:30:38)Chapter 6: Campfires, TVs, and Flickering Consciousness (0:38:57)Chapter 7: The Trauma of Truth (0:48:04)Chapter 8: Prophecy and The Trash Stratum (0:54:33)Chapter 9: UFOs as Time Machines, The Disappointment of Destiny (1:14:39)Chapter 10: Closing and News on Upcoming Releases (1:20:28)✨ Other MentionsAn inexhaustive list of people, places, and key works mentioned in this episode.* Morgan Robertson: Author of a novel that is believed to have predicted the sinking of the Titanic.* Hunter S. ACESS VIDEO VERSION BELOW, PURE AUDIO ABOVE Welcome to Season 11 Episode 4 of Thoth-Hermes Podcast…. Though with our guest in this dialogue, who can be quite sure of linear time? Rudolf and Karin are in conversation with author Dr. Eric Wargo. Academically an anthropologist, Eric has extended his spirit of scientific enquiry through Hermeticism, Alchemy, and into the contemporary “paranormal” discourse at large. Most specifically, he has taken on depth exploration of time: time loops, retrocausation, and precognition. This branch of study began for Eric in 2009, after having a UFO/UAP Experience. This anomalous experience created his initiation into the branch of modern scientists fully versed in scientific method yet fully aware of the mountain of Spooky anecdotal evidence of More. Law of Large Numbers? Yes, acknowledged: and gently set aside. Materialist explanation? A precise language with descriptive validity and profound explanatory limitations. Experience and initiation- their distinction, and coexistence- are honored throughout this conversation. Eric encountered break-out success with his 2018t book “Time Loops” (which Karin is on record as “passing out almost like Gospel” and scribe Emily keeps in her inner temple box of books). He has also written on Precognitive Dreaming (2021). In his current release, “From Nowhere”, he applies these insights to creativity. Eric notes the role of skilled stress states, flow states, altered states, and creative states in the enhanced experience of precognition. He also invites a cultural shift towards the upfront naming of retrocausation; moving past Cartesian duality; and transcending the labyrinth closures found with all of free will, predestination, and Many Worlds theory. In the expanse of unknown, this interview spans a variety of lenses on time and anomaly. We hear a definition of “retrocausation” that includes both the science of the subatomic level and the co-existing validity of intuitive experience. The occult Higher Self as perhaps the Long Self which Eric articulates in relation to precognitive dreaming. The notion of “flipping Freud” and symbolic precognitive insight as the method the Long Self can use to address our agency. The challenges of True Will, Free Will, and dynamic interaction with choice. Eric suggests that our “intentions” may frequently be misrecognized precognitions. If this sounds like one wild moebius strip of a conversation: it is! And highly enjoyable. After you listen, carry receptivity for unfolding Wonder in your life events. Eric Wargo has a PhD in anthropology from Emory University and works as a science writer and editor in Washington, DC. He is the author of three books on precognition: From Nowhere, Precognitive Dreamwork and the Long Self, and the acclaimed Time Loops. In his spare time, he writes about science fiction, consciousness, and the paranormal at his popular blog, The Nightshirt. Click here to access Eric's blog! Music played in this episode The music for this episode is very special indeed. For our eighth episode, CSWR Research Associate and Pop Apocalypse host Matthew J. Dillon welcomes author Eric Wargo to the show. Eric is perhaps the world's foremost expert on precognition. His most recent book, "From Nowhere," examines precognition in its relationship to creativity in the lives of major authors and artists. They discuss the nature of time, dreamwork, memories from the future, and the four-dimensional brain. Along the way, they discuss figures like Virginia Woolf, Philip K. Dick, Andrei Tarkovsky, Sigmund Freud, and the sculptor, Michael Richards. Eric Wargo has a PhD in anthropology from Emory University and works as a professional science writer and editor in Washington, D.C. He is the author of three books on precognition: "From Nowhere," "Precognitive Dreamwork and the Long Self," and the acclaimed "Time Loops." In his spare time, Wargo writes about science fiction, consciousness, and parapsychology at his popular blog, "The Nightshirt." Full transcript forthcoming.
Your future is calling you. Feel the tugs, notice the foggy signals coming from what you are being drawn to. Eric Wargo feels the future. He knows you can touch your future because it is trying to touch you. Evidence? Listen to the artists who predict the future without consciously knowing what will happen. They write and paint things that will later happen. Your intuition captures the symbols that can guide you on a path seemingly already laid out for you, if you choose to follow it. *This episode was originally uploaded to YouTube on August 25, 2024 * Eric Wargo has a PhD in anthropology from Emory University and is the author of From Nowhere, as well as two previous books on precognition: Precognitive Dreamwork and the Long Self and the acclaimed Time Loops. Joel Bouchard will discuss the topic of getting in the flow with me today. Joel Bouchard is a doctoral student in psychology at Liberty University in Virginia, a multi-instrumentalist record producer, author, painter, Army veteran, business leader, local government official, and host of the philosophy podcast From Nowhere to Nothing. His podcast explores complex themes such as the messy, misapplied, and contradictive nature of tribalism, commitment as a concept through ontological and ethical paradigms, and the life-encompassing yet nuanced concept of work. Joel's diverse background includes discussions on shadow from the perspectives of physics, mythology, psychology, and cultural tradition, as well as debates on substantivalism and relationalism in defining locations. His intellectual curiosity extends to examining Donald Hoffman's ideas on reality and consciousness from “The Case Against Reality,” and exploring metaphysical, epistemological, and ontological aspects of consciousness through documentary scenes. Joel also engages in abstract discussions on the ontological impact of the present and delves into the past from both metaphysical and historical perspectives. His multifaceted experiences and deep philosophical inquiries make him a dynamic and insightful voice in contemporary philosophical discourse. Listen & Subscribe on: iTunes / Stitcher / Podbean / Overcast / Spotify Contact Info Website: https://jbouchard.podbean.com/ Most Influential Person My mom Effect On Emotions I would say that I've become better at expressing my emotions. My friends refer to me as the robot because I generally tend to be pretty unemotional. And, you know, that's good. It's good to be even-keeled, but it can also be negative if you freeze or shut down when in negative circumstances. So, the biggest impact for me is that it's helped me express happiness and joy and also to be able to identify with emotions without getting caught up in them without being angry. I can identify that this is an angry emotion and a justified emotion. Then I can decide how I should act with this information. Thoughts On Breathing As someone who's pretty new to meditation, breathing is something that I still struggle with a little bit. They tell you that you're not supposed to breathe loud, but I always find myself breathing loud because I'm using that to focus my attention. In Zen meditation, this is a subject of controversy. Some Zen masters say you can count your breaths, while others say don't. So I mix the two. You know, for the first 10, I count the in-breath and the out-breath, one, two, and then for the next 10, I only count the out-breath. So in one in two, then after that, I go to not counting. But I find myself still breathing very deeply. I think it helps with relaxation and focus. Sometimes, it can steal attention away from the internal focus on what's happening in the mind. Bullying Story I believe bullying is a problem rooted in a lack of mindfulness on the bully's part. I have a story about being mindful from the other side. During my time in the army, we had an exercise in basic training where we used pugil sticks, like on American Gladiators, to fight each other. The drill sergeant insisted everyone participate, but I didn't volunteer because I didn't want to fight. At the end, the drill sergeant singled me out to fight the biggest guy, nicknamed the Widowmaker, who was six foot five and 280 pounds. Though I didn't want to fight, I had been mindful and observed the fights closely. When it was my turn, I pretended to cower, turned to the side, and ducked down. As he came close, I jammed the end of my stick into his helmet, causing him to fall. I won the fight. This experience taught me that mindfulness can help you navigate difficult situations, even when facing a bigger, more imposing opponent. Lindsay Lerman is a writer and translator. Her new novel, WHAT ARE YOU (CLASH Books) is out now. Her first book I'm From Nowhere was published in 2019. Her essays, short stories, and poetry have been published in The Los Angeles Review of Books, Entropy, Hobart, Southwest Review, and elsewhere. She is currently adapting her short story Real Love—which first appeared in NY Tyrant Magazine—for the screen. She is represented by Abby Walters at CAA. In the intro David and I talk about Pascal Laugier's MARTYRS (2008). The interview with Lindsay starts at 27:42. In this conversation we get into: locating and living through the cusp of our time, the interconnection between nuance and chaos, dissolution, the unspoken rules of commodification, giving into the productivity of terror, giving yourself up to the universe, barfing into the void, celebrating the irrational, and the importance of play in the face of utility. We also talk about Bataille's philosophy around expenditure and waste as a way to explore Lindsey's outlook and work as an author. WHAT ARE YOU: Hypnotic, dreamlike, lyrical essays tell the story of a woman trapped in a destructive love affair with the universe. Her understanding of power, desire, and complicity must be transformed again and again. Addressed to an amorphous you, Lerman wrestles with the forces of birth and death, creation and destruction—going deep into the subterranean strata of consciousness and back. PRAISE: “An incantatory and hypnotic work of voice, What Are You exists at the apex of creation and destruction, desire and shame, innocence and experience, violence and tenderness, rapture and suffering, hunger and the denial of flesh. To read it is to feel the terror of falling from a great height—but wanting to; maybe even choosing to jump.” - SARAH GERARD, AUTHOR OF SUNSHINE STATE AND TRUE LOVE "Passionate, dispassionate, hypnotic, deadpan, ecstatic, Lindsay Lerman's What Are You, read it now. The Troggs were a garage band from Andover, England who would come to be highly influential in the garage band genre of the 60's and the punk movement of the 70's. The name is a shortened version of troglodyte, a mythical cave dweller. The troggs wanted to create an earthy, raw feel in their music, and this inspired the name. Their debut album From Nowhere hit the stores in 1966.The Troggs were a quartet with Reg Presley on lead vocals, and Ronnie Bonds on drums. Reg and Ronnie had been childhood friends in Andover, and formed The Troggs with Pete Staples on bass and Chris Britton on guitar. This lineup would have a number of hits in 1966 and 1967, including the perennial party song covered by garage bands around the world, "Wild Thing." The popularity of The Troggs would fall off after 1967, and they would have a number of iterations afterwards, but they always remained a quartet. They also would be highly influential on a number of groups including Jimi Hendrix and the Ramones. R.E.M. was influenced by them as well, and the Troggs would record an album with three members of R.E.M in 1992 entitled Athens Andover. Paul McCartney was once asked what band he would choose to be in if he were in a band other than the Beatles, and he chose The Troggs. The Troggs still occasionally play today, and the sole original member of the band continuing with the group is Chris Britton. If you haven't heard this group before outside of "Wild Thing," we think you will appreciate the appeal of their raw approach to music. Hi Hi HazelThis song a hit in the UK, and was written around the idea of a girl who leaves down as an ordinary girl and returns as a drop dead gorgeous beauty. "Hi, hi hi Hazel, nice to see you in the neighborhood."Wild ThingProbably the most recognizable Troggs hit, and covered in fraternity parties from then on. This went to number 1, and has been covered by everyone from Jimi Hendrix to Sam Kenison to Cheap Trick, to the Muppets. The song was written by Chip Taylor, who is John Voight's brother.I Just SingThis deeper cut has a gritty, aggressive attitude that typifies the sound of The Troggs. "I just go to my bed, lay my hands on my head. I open my mouth and I sing, yeah I just sing. Yeah, I just sing."With a Girl Like YouThis track was recorded in one take, as they also did with "Wild Thing." This was also a hit at the time, that has a more positive "sunshine pop" sound than most songs recorded by The Troggs. It is about a guy who wants to dance with a girl he see's across the dance floor, but can't muster up the nerve to ask her to dance." ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Nashville Rebel by Waylon JenningsThe Nashville Rebel starred Waylon Jennings as an ex army man stranded in Morgan's Grove after being robbed. His family and singing career start from there. STAFF PICKS:Bang! Bang! by the Joe Cuba SextetBruce's staff pick started the boogaloo era in New York. Joe Cuba (born Gilberto Calderon in New York) was a conga drummer of Puerto Rican descent, and would become famous in boogaloo music and later in Samba. Boogaloo was popular from 1966 to 1969 after the Palladium Ballroom in New York City lost its liquor license and closed, leading to the decline of mambo.Black Is Black by Los BravosRob features a track with a strong bass line building to the minor key chorus. Los Bravos were a Spanish quintet with a German lead singer. The lyrics chronicle the loss a boy feels when his girl leaves him.96 Tears by ? and the MysteriansBrian's staff pick is from a group who so embraced mystery that the lead singer simply goes by a question mark. They always wore dark glasses as a part of their intrigue. The lead singer claimed that the number "96" has a deep philosophical meaning, but refused to say why.Knock On Wood by Eddie FloydWayne's staff pick is the original soul song made famous by Amii Stewart during the disco era. Eddie Floyd intended this song to be sung by Otis Redding, but Floyd performed it instead. The backing house band was Booker T. and the M.G.'s, and Isaac Hayes played piano on it. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Summer Samba (So Nice) by Walter WandersleyLong before it became synonymous with waiting lines and hold music, this instrumental piece hit the charts in 1966.
"Please Stop” “Bish Whet” & “Truuueee” are some of the reactions we have while on social media. See what got those reactions this time. There's been a lot of funny things on Social Media this week! Our favorite thing is Gobbledyween, so to close out this year’s frightening festivities, Paul and Arlo are breaking from the norm to discuss Emil Ferris’ 2017 graphic novel My Favorite Thing Is Monsters. Joining them for this first Gobbledyween/Four-Color Flashback crossover is their The Deli Counter of Justice collaborator Eric Sipple. The gang marvels at Ferris’ stunning art (all done in ballpoint pen!), attempts to process the numerous threads in this first of two planned volumes (sexuality, duality, and reality, oh my!), draws unexpected parallels to Art Spiegelman’s Maus (a FCF entry just this past August!), and so much more (no parenthetical necessary!).
