After the gruesome discovery, the investigation led authorities to the home of Michael Dudley, who was the victims' landlord. Dudley was arrested and subsequently convicted of murdering the young couple. Jami and Tom dive into the psychology of the perpetrator and one of his other tenants, and Tom shares a WILD story about a neighbor who had an interesting way of coping with the death of her beloved pets. Copyright ©2026, Weird Darkness.Originally aired: August 19, 2026This episode of Weird Darkness covers the marriage application Chris Watts filed from a Wisconsin prison eight years after murdering his pregnant wife and their two young daughters, and the long record of women who write to, visit and marry men who will never get out.It opens at Dodge Correctional Institution in Waupun, Wisconsin, where an inmate may touch a visitor twice, once at the start of a visit and once at the end, an embrace reporting puts at roughly ten seconds. On August 12th, 2026 the Daily Mail reported that Chris Watts, 41, and a 39-year-old Cleveland realtor named Lizzie Henderson had applied to marry inside the Wisconsin prison system. Lizzie had moved from Ohio to Wisconsin with her mother, filed a sealed petition for a confidential name change on September 12th, 2025, and appeared in prison visitor logs roughly twenty times during 2025, plus a visit on Christmas Day of 2024. Wisconsin handles these requests under policy 309.00.06, PIOC Marriages, which routes the application through a marriage coordinator and leaves the decision with the warden. No ceremony or license has been documented, and Watts has no projected release date.From there the episode goes back to the family. The Watts family doorbell camera recorded Shanann Watts arriving home at 1:48 in the morning on August 13th, 2018 at 2825 Saratoga Trail in Frederick, Colorado. She was 34 and fifteen weeks pregnant with a son the couple had named Nico, raising daughters Bella, four, and Celeste, three, and selling Thrive for Le-Vel while her husband worked for Anadarko Petroleum and carried on an affair with co-worker Nichol Kessinger. Watts failed a polygraph administered by Colorado Bureau of Investigation agent Tammy Lee, blamed Shanann for the girls' deaths, then retracted it. A drone over an Anadarko site called CERVI 319 found Shanann in a shallow grave and both girls submerged in crude oil inside storage tanks with eight-inch hatches. Judge Marcelo Kopcow sentenced him on November 19th, 2018 to five life sentences plus 84 years. In a February 2019 interview at Waupun, Watts described smothering Celeste in his truck while Bella sat beside her, and hearing Bella's last two words, "Daddy, no!", every time he closes his eyes.The second half opens in the autumn of 1921, when French railways ran extra trains to Versailles for the trial of Henri Désiré Landru, a furniture dealer who placed lonely-hearts advertisements in Paris newspapers and murdered eleven people. Women mailed him proposals of marriage while he awaited the guillotine. The modern version runs through Meet-An-Inmate, launched in 1998, and WriteAPrisoner, founded by Adam Lovell in 2000, which post profiles written on paper because American prisons allow no internet access; Susan Smith drew more than six thousand letters before pulling her listing in 2003. Hybristophilia, the term journalists reach for, was coined by sexologist John Money in 1986 and has never appeared in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual. Sheila Isenberg's Women Who Love Men Who Kill, forensic psychologist Katherine Ramsland's "perfect boyfriend" model, and sociologist Megan Comfort's San Quentin fieldwork in Doing Time Together supply what the women themselves say they are getting.Two 2025 studies found that actively seeking out romanticizing TikTok content correlated with attraction while passive exposure predicted nothing. The risk is documented in the killings of Regina Capobianco and John Mann by her pen pal Thomas Knuff in Parma Heights, Ohio, and in the strangling deaths of Stephanie Dowells and Tania Thomas during family visits at Mule Creek State Prison. The marriages run from Nina Van Zandt, who married Haymarket defendant August Spies by proxy in 1887 and may have married an innocent man, through Ted Bundy and Carole Ann Boone, Doreen Lioy and Richard Ramirez at San Quentin, the Twinkie that served as Erik Menendez and Tammi Saccoman's wedding cake, and James Whitehouse, who wrote to Susan Atkins in 1985 and went on to Harvard Law School to serve as her attorney. All of it rests on Turner v. Safley, the 1987 Supreme Court decision in which Justice Sandra Day O'Connor noted that most inmates are eventually released, leaving the man who never will be an untested case. Rhode Island's 1909 civil death statute declared lifers "dead in all respects", and Britain barred whole-life prisoners from marrying in 2024 after Milly Dowler's murderer Levi Bellfield was granted permission.The episode closes on the women who leave, absent from every study in the field. Lynn Hartman ended her engagement to Steven Avery in October of 2016 and wrote that she had been fooled by the Netflix documentary. Paula Williamson married Charles Bronson at HMP Wakefield in November of 2017, had it annulled in 2019, and died that July at thirty-eight. Anna Eriksson divorced Lyle Menendez in 2001 and still argues for his release. No agency counts prison marriages, and every figure circulating online is unsourced. After Bryan Kohberger was arrested, commentators and true-crime observers drew comparisons between the Moscow killings and several notorious attacks on young women in shared residences, including the 1992 murders near the University at Buffalo and some of Ted Bundy's crimes. The similarities being discussed were largely circumstantial and behavioral rather than proof of any direct connection: a male attacker allegedly entering a residence occupied by young women, striking during the overnight hours, using a knife, attacking multiple victims at close range and leaving behind a scene that appeared intensely personal and extraordinarily violent. The college setting also fueled the comparisons, because the victims were young, socially connected students living together or near one another, while the killer allegedly approached and departed without immediately being identified.The Bundy comparisons were especially common because Bundy had committed nighttime attacks against women in communal living environments, most famously the 1978 Chi Omega sorority-house attacks at Florida State University, where he entered the residence and assaulted several women in rapid succession. Similarities were also discussed in relation to the unsolved 1992 Buffalo-area student murders, which likewise involved young women and generated speculation about whether an offender had selected victims within a college environment. None of those parallels established that Kohberger had modeled the Idaho murders on Bundy or on the Buffalo case, however, and investigators did not publicly demonstrate that the crimes were connected. Chelsea and Jami dive into the episode titled “Primetime Predator,” which details the case of Geoffrey Paschel. Paschel, former cast member of 90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days, met Kristen Wilson Chapman on a dating app in 2017. By 2019, Paschel's lies and previous criminal charges had been exposed and everything culminated in an extremely violent assault against Kristen in June of that year. Kristen, badly injured, escaped with her life and Paschel was arrested on charges of aggravated kidnapping, domestic assault and interference with an emergency call. Paschel later stood trial, was convicted and sentenced to 18 years in prison without the possibility of parole. Jami and Chelsea dive into the psychology of liars, scammers, and abusers as well as some of the common threads they see with these types of people. Between the 1970s and '80s, the Pacific Northwest was home to a bizarre, outsized cluster of serial killers including Bundy, Gary Ridgeway, Charles Manson and many more. These stories are particularly ironic, when you consider the trumped up case—pun intended—against Donald Trump regarding E Jean Carroll.  But if CA and AZ Democrats are bad, ME Democrat said, “Hold my latte!”, as they tried to select a Nazi rapist in Maine for the Senate. That's like giving a sports franchise to Ted Bundy. As you look at that story in the rearview mirror, ask yourself how deranged you must be to try to put Graham Platner by the American public. Forget that the Left think of Platner as their answer to conservative men, aka REAL men. But the notion that they could get their own people to agree to it is what I find most amazing. And they succeeded, until Platner became politically untenable. But if that story doesn't make you scratch your head, how about Governor Tim Walz in MN, releasing a rapist of a 10-yo girl, because he wanted to show mercy to a man who had a bad day. Essentially that was Walz' excuse for showing mercy to a rapist. He had a bad day.  Kevin Jackson has been called, the "white-collar" Joe Rogan. German immigrant Frederick Hollman, one of America's earliest serial killers, was hanged at the Ford County Jail in Paxton, Illinois, on May 14, 1897, after promising to return and rap on the windows of the witnesses and jurors who convicted him — and the jail is now a paranormal hotspot where his face has been photographed glaring into his old cell. Lavinia Fisher and her husband John ran the Six Mile House near Charleston, South Carolina, in the early 1820s, allegedly poisoning and dropping wealthy travelers through a trapdoor before their hanging for highway robbery, and her aggressive spirit is still blamed for choking sensations and foul stenches at the Old Charleston Jail. Raymond Snowden, dubbed Idaho's Jack the Ripper for the 1956 stabbing of Cora Dean, endured a botched twenty-minute hanging at the Old Idaho Penitentiary in Boise in 1957 and reportedly haunts the gallows site alongside inmate Douglas Van Vlack, who leaped to his death from the cell block rafters. Ted Bundy, executed in Florida's electric chair on January 24, 1989, has supposedly been seen grinning atop the chair and telling guards he beat them all, while Willie Lloyd Turner — executed by lethal injection in 1995 after fifteen years and five aborted trips to the chamber — appeared so lifelike after death that inmates mistook him for the living. The segment closes across the Atlantic with executioner John Ellis, who hanged more than a hundred people at Manchester's Strangeways Jail before killing himself in 1932 and is said to still patrol B Wing to keep the prison's other ghosts, including poisoner Mrs. Merrifield, in line.From there the episode moves to Alcatraz, the federal penitentiary that operated on its fog-bound San Francisco Bay island from 1934 to 1963 and earned a reputation as one of America's most haunted sites. The solitary cells of D-Block known as "the hole" are tied to the 1940s strangulation death of a screaming inmate in cell 14D, possibly the work of former occupant Rufus McCain, and visitors report icy fingers and unnatural cold there. The 1946 Battle of Alcatraz left two guards and three escapees dead in a utility corridor where clanging noises still echo, psychic Sylvia Browne sensed murdered hitman Abie "Butcher" Maldowitz in the laundry room, and the catacomb "dungeon" beneath A-Block preserves the screams of prisoners once chained naked to its walls. Al Capone spent part of his 1934 sentence strumming a banjo to hold off insanity, and that banjo music is still reportedly heard in the halls, while "Birdman" Robert Stroud haunts the hospital wing where he was confined among his canary research. The island carried dark associations long before the prison, from Ohlone tribal beliefs that it gathered evil spirits to the Civil War soldiers who died chained in its guardhouse basement, and even the 1969 to 1971 Native American occupation ended in fire and loss before the ghosts reportedly stayed behind.Next the episode turns to a fringe theory that reframes flying saucers as human technology rather than alien craft, arguing that a secretive commercial group used patent-law secrecy to build working time machines in twentieth-century laboratories. The account claims these machines can move an ion through time in both directions, that short-range "trans-burst" devices let a person leap across nearby distances, and that the UFOs people photograph are previews of future mankind rather than extraterrestrial visitors. It ties the idea to Einstein's 1901 work as a patent clerk and to E=mc², and recasts Area 51 as cover not for alien bodies but for a commercial experiment involving four trained monkeys linked to a 1961 interstellar flight.The episode closes with a listener account from Amber Harris, who lived at the end of a cul-de-sac in Williamsburg, Virginia, in a house set down in a ditch so the second floor sat level with the street. After her next-door neighbor died suddenly in his home and his widow moved away, the house sat unsold for months, and one night past midnight the hallway light outside Amber's bedroom switched on without the telltale sound of anyone climbing the loud staircase, casting the shadow of a male figure beneath her door before it went dark. Weeks later her sister woke her by text to watch the dead neighbor's dog standing beneath the orange street light, barking at the empty house before turning its head directly toward the two of them at the window and then vanishing, an image that stayed with the family until a job moved them to Indiana, with the neighbor's house still unsold when they drove past it the following May.

Alex Murdaugh's retrial is officially on the calendar — April 5, 2027 — and the first hearing made one thing immediately clear: the defense is not running the same playbook. Harpootlian walked into a Lexington County courtroom with first-responder transcripts and told the judge the accounts from people who arrived at Moselle the night of the killings don't match. He said there were other individuals present that night whose presence has never been fully accounted for.The prosecution faces a retrial with significantly less room to maneuver. The South Carolina Supreme Court's ruling limited how much financial crimes evidence the state can present — after prosecutors spent 12.5 hours over ten days on that testimony in the original trial. Attorney General Alan Wilson has put the death penalty on the table, a move the defense calls vindictive prosecution and a campaign sound bite. Wilson, the Republican candidate for governor, says the legal landscape around capital punishment has changed since 2022. The defense fired back: “What does he know today he didn't know five years ago?”Meanwhile, DNA from an unknown male recovered from under Maggie Murdaugh's fingernails sits waiting for a test the defense says didn't exist when the killings happened. The defense wants it sent to Othram, the forensic genealogy lab behind the Kohberger case. The judge will rule on that motion at the next hearing, August 14. Murdaugh himself appeared in double shackles and an orange jumpsuit. His lawyer told the court he is “not Ted Bundy.” The prosecution's response: he “thinks he is special. He surfaced next in Paris as a regular guest of Louis XV, working in a commissioned laboratory on fabric dyes and carrying out discreet missions, while gossip held that he could turn ordinary stones into jewels and had lived for hundreds or thousands of years, even claiming presence at the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD. After reported appearances aiding Catherine the Great in Russia and a friendship with Prince Charles of Hesse-Cassel in Germany, where he was said to die in 1784, the story jumps to early-1900s New Orleans and a wealthy newcomer named Jacques St. Germain, who threw lavish parties yet never ate or drank, claimed descent from the Count, and bore an uncanny resemblance to him. The account turns dark when a woman leapt from his balcony into the street, telling police he had bitten her neck; St. Germain vanished overnight, leaving his belongings behind and several open bottles that proved to hold a mixture of wine and blood.From there the episode trades immortality for ingenuity, walking through the boldest jailbreaks on record. It runs from the 2016 Orange County escape, where Jonathan Tieu, Bac Duong, and Hossein Nayeri cut through walls and rappelled to a sixteen-hour head start, to Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán slipping out of Altiplano through a mile-long lighted tunnel in 2015, and Clinton Correctional inmates David Sweat and Richard Matt crawling through a steam pipe with tools handed over by prison worker Joyce Mitchell. Ted Bundy jumped from a Colorado courthouse library window, John Dillinger bluffed his way out of an Indiana jail with a wooden pistol painted in shoe polish, and yoga master Choi Gap Bok greased himself and squeezed through a six-by-eighteen-inch food slot in thirty-four seconds. The larger breakouts carry heavier counts: three men vanished from Alcatraz in 1962 on a raft of raincoats, more than 480 Taliban prisoners filed out of Kandahar's Sarpoza Prison through a thousand-foot tunnel in 2011, over a thousand Japanese prisoners stormed the wire at Australia's Cowra camp in 1944, and inmates at the Nazi death camp Sobibor killed eleven SS guards with homemade knives before running for the treeline.Next the episode settles in Dallas and then Las Vegas with Lester Ben "Benny" Binion, the cowboy-hatted racketeer who founded the World Series of Poker and shot rival bootlegger Frank Bolding in the neck in 1931, walking away with a two-year suspended sentence and the nickname the Cowboy. He killed gambling competitor Ben Frieden in 1936 and beat the charge after witnesses vanished, ran dice games and bookies out of Dallas hotels for high rollers like Howard Hughes and H.L. Hunt, then moved to Las Vegas in 1946 and turned the Eldorado into the no-limit Horseshoe, laying down the first carpet in a Vegas casino. His feud with Dallas gambler Herbert "the Cat" Noble ran through eleven attempts on Noble's life and killed Noble's wife Mildred with a car bomb before a mailbox blast ended Noble in 1951. Binion died on Christmas Day 1989 and was carried to the cemetery behind six black horses, while his son Ted was found dead in 1998 in a case that convicted Sandy Murphy and Rick Tabish of burglary but acquitted them of the slaying, with the missing silver bullion never recovered.The episode closes inside America's churches, where worship shares the building with the dead. At Most Holy Trinity in Brooklyn, built over a former cemetery, parishioners report the spirit of clerk George Stelz, murdered in 1897, alongside bells that ring on their own and a bloody handprint in the bell tower stairway. The Washington National Cathedral carries the echo of Woodrow Wilson's cane and charred figures from a 1946 fire, while New Orleans' St. Louis Cathedral is tied to voodoo queen Marie Laveau, socialite Delphine Lalaurie, and six men executed on its grounds. At St. Mark's Episcopal in Cheyenne, a Swedish immigrant is said to have sealed his dead coworker inside the unfinished bell tower wall to avoid deportation, and at St. Paul's Chapel in New York — where George Washington prayed on his inauguration day — the spirit of actor George Frederick Cooke is said to wander still, his actual skull having traveled from a Philadelphia medical library and, by lore, onto the stage as a prop in Hamlet.

The sect of loyal Warren Jeffs followers were struggling and vulnerable when Bateman showed up in their Short Creek community, near the border of Arizona and Utah. Bateman declared himself the successor of Warren Jeffs and used religious authority to control his followers and sexually abuse minors. In 2016, Christine Marie, a survivor of abuse by a religious cult leader, ingratiated herself to the Short Creek FLDS community. The investigation of Ted Bundy did not end with his arrest. It continued through three trials, nine years on death row, and a final week of confessions that produced more questions than answers.The Chi Omega trial, Miami, June 1979: the first American criminal trial broadcast nationally, gavel to gavel. Over two hundred and fifty reporters. Forensic dentist Dr. Richard Souviron walked a jury through the bite mark evidence that matched Bundy's teeth to the wound on Lisa Levy. Guilty on all counts. Death sentence. Judge Cowart's address from the bench — calling the man he had just condemned a bright young man — remains one of the strangest moments in American courtroom history.The Kimberly Leach trial, Orlando, January 1980: Bundy proposed to Carole Ann Boone on the witness stand with a notary present, exploiting a Florida legal quirk. He was convicted and sentenced to death a third time.On death row, he spoke to journalists Michaud and Aynesworth for hundreds of hours but would only profile the killer in the third person. FBI Agent Bill Hagmaier began visiting in 1986.In January 1989, with no appeals remaining, Bundy summoned detectives from Washington, Utah, Colorado, and Idaho. He gave Bob Keppel the Washington names. Dennis Couch the Utah names. Mike Fisher the Colorado names. He described locations. When Hagmaier asked if thirty-six was closer, Bundy said: add one more digit.Pronounced dead at 7:16 on January 24, 1989. The night before, he gave a final interview to James Dobson blaming violent material since boyhood. The Tallahassee Police Department responded to the Chi Omega sorority house at Florida State University in the early hours of January 15, 1978. What they found inside — Margaret Bowman and Lisa Levy killed, Kathy Kleiner and Karen Chandler severely injured — was unlike anything the department had investigated.Nita Neary, the only eyewitness, described a man in a stocking mask on the stairs carrying an oak log. The investigators photographed a bite mark on Lisa Levy's body. It was the only physical evidence the man left behind.Tallahassee did not know it was hunting Ted Bundy. Florida had no file on him. He had arrived in the state nine days earlier under an alias, after escaping from a Colorado jail on December 30, 1977.In the weeks that followed, he moved around Tallahassee under stolen identities. On February 8 in Jacksonville, he approached a fourteen-year-old girl outside a school. Her brother wrote the plate number on his hand and called police. The plate came back stolen. On February 9, twelve-year-old Kimberly Leach was seen walking toward a white van at Lake City Junior High. Her body was recovered fifty-seven days later.The investigation broke on February 15 when Pensacola Officer David Lee ran a stolen plate on an orange Volkswagen at 1:34 in the morning. The driver fought, ran, and was caught. He gave a stolen student ID. Two days later he identified himself as Ted Bundy, and three state investigations converged on one Florida holding cell.This is the fourth of five conversations in Ted Bundy: History's Hidden Killers. In October 1976, Colorado charged him with the murder of Caryn Campbell. He was extradited to Aspen in January 1977.As his own attorney, he received the legal courtesies the Sixth Amendment requires. Library access. No shackles. No handcuffs in the building. The Pitkin County Courthouse gave a murder defendant the run of the second floor.On June 7, 1977, he jumped from the library window. Twenty-five feet to an alley. Across the Roaring Fork River. Six days in the wilderness east of Aspen. A manhunt involving bloodhounds, helicopters, and roadblocks on Highway 82. Recaptured June 13 in a stolen Cadillac by Officer Gene Flatt.Transferred to the Garfield County Jail in Glenwood Springs. Over the following months, he stopped eating, lost more than twenty pounds, and widened a gap around the light fixture in his ceiling. On December 30, 1977 — New Year's weekend, skeleton staff — he crawled through the ceiling into the head jailer's empty apartment, dressed in civilian clothes, and walked out.Seventeen hours later, a guard found books under the blanket.Bundy's route: Glenwood Springs to Vail to Denver to Chicago to Ann Arbor to Atlanta to Tallahassee, Florida.
