In this episode of The Happier Life Project, we explore the powerful connection between climate and mental health, examining how the climate crisis impacts our emotional well-being and the vital role a healthy planet plays in maintaining our mental health. Terms like ‘eco-anxiety,' ‘environmental doom,' ‘ecological grief,' and ‘eco-guilt' capture the psychological toll that environmental degradation and climate change are having on individuals and communities worldwide. This is why caring for the climate is so deeply intertwined with caring for our own mental health and the well-being of our communities. Dr Emma Lawrance leads the Climate Cares Centre, where she collaborates with diverse experts to explore the connections between climate change and mental health, including through the Connecting Climate Minds global initiative. As the Mental Health Innovations Fellow at the Institute of Global Health Innovation, Emma directs the mental health strategy, focusing on digital mental health support and the Climate Cares program. With degrees in physics, chemistry, science communications, and neuroscience, Emma is passionate about the outdoors, especially in her native Adelaide Hills. This conversation emphasizes the urgent need to protect our planet - not just for its sake, but for the essential role it plays in protecting our well-being. Dr Emma joins host Gabby to explore the emotional challenges of navigating a changing world. Together, they discuss how we can better educate ourselves and offer compassion to those affected. Tune in to discover the deep connection between a healthy planet and a healthy mind, and the small, meaningful actions we can take to help slow the climate crisis, and foster healing for the Earth... and therefore ourselves. David Nabarro says people are the key to effecting change, and for him, that is no different in the food industry. "Some in the food industry tell me that they read the writing on the wall," he says. "We know we're going to have to change. "We're going to have to reduce our emissions and be much better at regenerating nature. "I would say that's a small proportion of those working in the food sector. So it is starting, but it's not anything like enough." David is Co-Director and Chair of the Institute of Global Health Innovation at Imperial College London. He has had an extraordinary career in public health, working on complex issues that span disease outbreaks, food security, and nutrition. You might remember his regular appearances in the news during the coronavirus pandemic. In 2020, he was appointed Special Envoy of the WHO Director-General on COVID-19. He is also co-lead of the UN Global Crisis Response Group on Food, Energy and Finance. Sustainability has been a key theme throughout his career, curating the Food Systems Summit Dialogues in 2018 and now working as Strategic Director at the 4SD Foundation, providing sustainable development training to leaders in all sectors. Given his expertise and passion for sustainable food systems, David is the ideal person to discuss the critical topics of resilience and equitability in the global food system. In this episode of the Food Matters Live podcast, we explore the existing barriers and assess whether our current system is prepared to tackle the challenges ahead. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Announcing the awardees for Open Philanthropy's $150M Regranting Challenge, published by ChrisSmith on January 12, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. In February, we launched the Regranting Challenge, aiming to add $150 million in funding to the budgets of outstanding grantmakers at other foundations. We saw the Challenge as an opportunity to maximize our impact, by: Adding funding to high-impact work that was already underway. We've long been inspired by the work of other grantmakers, and we believe there are highly effective grantmaking organizations doing better work than we could in their respective spaces. Instead of reinventing the wheel, we've used the Regranting Challenge to give some of those organizations additional funding, so they can increase the scale and scope of their own work. Piloting a new approach to growing highly effective grantmaking programs. The lack of feedback mechanisms that ensure effective grantmakers get more money to allocate is a major shortcoming in the existing philanthropic ecosystem. The Regranting Challenge gave us a chance to experiment with changing that dynamic. Learning from a wide range of grantmakers with different approaches. By creating an open call, we were able to identify highly effective foundations and program areas to support that we wouldn't have known about otherwise. Results After eight months, three selection rounds, and evaluations from dozens of experts (inside and outside Open Philanthropy), we've chosen the awardees! We'll share a brief description of each program here, but you can learn more about them on the Regranting Challenge website. Development Innovation Ventures: $45,000,000 Development Innovation Ventures is a program inside the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). They invest in early-stage organizations and projects in global health and development that have the potential to be highly impactful and cost-effective. They've supported programs in water sanitation, early childhood education, and routine immunization (among others). (Read more) Eleanor Crook Foundation: $25,000,000 The Eleanor Crook Foundation funds research and advocacy to end global malnutrition. They have a track record of successfully advocating for the increased use of the “Power 4” malnutrition interventions — prenatal vitamins for pregnant women, breastfeeding support for mothers, vitamin A supplementation, and ready-to-use therapeutic food to treat wasting. (Read more) Global Education, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation: $5,000,000 The Global Education program at the Gates Foundation makes grants to organizations that aredeveloping and improving highly effective education interventions. These interventions — namely remediation, structured pedagogy, and teaching at the right level — have been shown to improve foundational literacy and numeracy in low- and middle-income countries. Deploying community-based health workers has been a popular tactic to boost vaccination rates during COVID, but when the crisis ends, how can they stay engaged to help achieve other public health goals? That's the kind of question Maria Thacker-Goethe grapples with as CEO of the Atlanta-based Center for Global Health Innovation. “You have to have the respect to keep paying people and not leave them high and dry because that will just break down trust,” says Thacker-Goethe, who is also the President and CEO of Georgia Bio.  A key link in public health efforts in Georgia and beyond, she takes a ground-up approach to fostering collaboration among stakeholders in order to develop and share innovations, particularly those focused on health equity. A good example is a new “innovation district” the Center is building that will, in a unique twist, co-locate high tech health companies with public health organizations.  As she tells host Dr. Rishi Desai, Thacker-Goethe believes an underlying issue connecting all of this work is building trust through better communications, including more effective use of popular social media platforms, a tactic not yet fully embraced by the public health establishment. Don't miss this fascinating exploration of innovation in public health, and stay tuned to learn about a special project that shares the wisdom of public health pioneers.Mentioned in this episode:https://cghi.orghttps://www.9lessons.org

In Africa, in children hospitalised with severe pneumonia with oxygen saturations between 80 and 91% who did not receive oxygen, mortality assessed at 48 h (1.4%) was comparable to the usual method of oxygen delivery (low-flow oxygen; LFO (2.5%)) and in those receiving high-flow nasal therapy (HFNT, 1.1%). The potential impact of HFNT on patient-centred outcomes and on resources, particularly oxygen supplies, should stimulate further exploration particularly in children with severe pneumonia managed in low resource settings. Global GoalsCast is invited to an exclusive briefing on Covid-19 for global health leaders. The Covid-19 situation is more sobering today than at any time in the pandemic, Dr. David Nabarro, special envoy of the World Health Organization, informs the group. India is the challenge now, he reports. But where will the problem be tomorrow? “I don’t know,” he warns.  Nabarro notes that some wealthy countries are trying to vaccinate their way out of the pandemic, even planning for the vaccination of children. But there is not yet enough vaccine to protect the world. So the right thing to do is use vaccine to protect the most vulnerable first, wherever they are and rely on non-pharmaceutical tools, like distancing, masks and washing, to curb the spread. Also featured in this episode is Dr. Jonathan Fitzsimon, a family physician in Ontario, Canada and the inspiring music of Nazeem, whose ballad, Respect, honors frontline workers and encourages everyone to abide by public health measures.
