The Korean peninsula was split into two countries after the Second World War. The Soviet backed North and the U.S. backed South. North Korea tried to unify the two by invading South Korea in June 1950. Initially North Korea had great success. It pushed South Korea's small military aside and rushed down the peninsula while the United States tried to get forces onto the peninsula. The North Koreans were finally stopped around the port of Pusan at the very bottom of the Korean peninsula. While fighting around Pusan was going on, the U.S. commander, General Douglas MacArthur, contemplated his next move. Instead of using his growing force to reinforce Pusan, MacArthur chose to do something far more risky. He would conduct an amphibious landing deep in the rear of the North Korean army, cut its logistics, and cause it to collapse. The place he picked for this landing was the port of Inchon. Robert D. Heinl, Jr. tells the story in "Victory at High Tide: The Inchon Seoul Campaign."

Scotland is currently leading the world in the development and testing of tidal stream and wave energy technologies. Two of the world's first tidal stream arrays have been built and operated in Scotland since 2016. Excitement for the sector is also growing since a number of projects have won support through the UK's contracts for difference (CfD) scheme in recent years. Turn in to hear Energy Voice news editor speak to Johanna Money, energy transition specialist at Scottish Enterprise, about the vast economic and environmental potential for Scotland underneath the water as it develops energy generation technology that is clean and comes from consistent and predictable tides. We also take a trip up to Orkney to speak with Eileen Linklater, corporate affairs director of European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC), where conditions are ideal to prove why the tide will wait for no one.

Colleen Cook is the Chief Business Officer for High Tide. We talk at length about computerwork vs peoplework, and how High Tide's unification of data makes data management universally useful for the entire nonprofit. Among the things we discuss: Unified, comprehensive data for nonprofits: Nonprofits deal with a lot of data points, but too often that data is siloed, making it difficult to see the complete picture. Streamlined data allows nonprofits to make fully informed decisions about donor relationships, communication strategies, etc. This is especially important because nonprofits tend to deal with higher levels of employee churn, meaning that data points can be lost when employees leave the organization if streamlined processes are not in place. Technology lag in the nonprofit sector: Nonprofits tend to be years behind other industries when it comes to technology development & adoption. Fundraising vs. sales: Fundraising and sales at times use similar strategies and concepts (i.e. digital engagement metrics) - but there are key differences when one asks for a donation for a nonprofit, compared to selling a product or service to a customer. Donor experience: Every touchpoint with a donor is critical for nonprofits in order to maintain positive, lasting relationships within their donor revenue stream. Nonprofits should tailor the donor experience to each individual donor, with unique communication, requests, and touchpoints for each donor. “People give to people.” Changing donor demographics: Nonprofits need to consider and begin establishing relationships with the next generation of donors. Trillions of dollars will be changing hands from current, aging donors to the younger generation (donors of tomorrow), and nonprofits need to establish those relationships well before they begin asking for money. Millennials and Gen-Z also have different expectations on communication, accountability, etc. than Boomers. All of this must be considered & acted upon by nonprofit organizations. Designer Marceline Leiman joins the show for an episode that ebbs and flows in such an engaging way, much like the tides and other marvels in nature. Amongst many other games, Marceline recently designed High Tide, which was an extreme success at the Indie Games Night Market and serves as an anchor for much of this conversation. The game was handcrafted with so many unique considerations and stories that I was fortunate enough to hear, and you will be able to too now. In addition to this indie market release, there will be a subsequent production through Underdog Games! I'm by no stretch an expert in the tides (or the ocean, or much of anything for that matter), but my cursory “research” shows that the biggest waves typically come in right before high tide. And a wave is an apt descriptor of how Marceline has been creating lately, with many things to look forward to from her. Grab yourself a tea (or coffee) and enjoy a wonderful episode.Check out Marceline on Bluesky and BoardGameGeek Intro and Character/Craft/Creation (0:00)TeaSeeing something and feeling the human creation that went into itThermostat boxes“I [the tide] am inevitable.” (35:18)After discussing a lot of the physicality and process of creating everything needed to play the game, Marceline dives into stories of how the game plays–how a main focus was the intentionality of having the game constantly moving forward.“To Indie or Not to Indie?” (50:00)This sub-header probably isn't the most apt, but I liked it.Anyway, Marceline reflects on researching games throughout history, the purposefulness of seeing those connections in modern games, and how that's being worked into her designs.Bluer Skies Ahead (1:12:50)In addition to appreciating Marceline's designs, I cannot overstate how thoughtful her social media presence is. The threads read like stories and touch on game design, social issues, the overlap between them, and a multitude of other things. Thank you, Marceline!Wrap-up Questions (1:30:27)A text on Marceline's mine and future games to look out for.***The cover image is currently a picture from Marceline, posted on BGG and elsewhere. As I like trying to personally make unique episode images, I have a plan for something here (just not the time, as I want this one to be really good/different; there are a couple others I want to go back and redo). Regardless, this is a gorgeous picture, and you get to see the awesome production of the game from it being the current image.***-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------If you like this show, liking it on whatever platform you listen to and writing a review would mean so much! Sustainability In Your Ear welcomes back oceanographer and author John Englander, who last visited with us in February 2023. John is the author of two pivotal books on Sea Level Rise, High Tide on Main Street: Rising Sea Level and the Coming Coastal Crisis, which explores the science behind rising seas and its far-reaching impacts on society, and Moving to Higher Ground: Rising Sea Level and the Path Forward, which offers a comprehensive look at how individuals, businesses, and governments can adapt to this unavoidable reality. He recently gave a talk at the U.S. Naval Academy and shares the reaction he heard from admirals and strategists charged with protecting U.S. interests a sea. John delivered a stark warning about the accelerating rate of sea level rise, emphasizing the vulnerabilities of the Antarctic ice sheets—particularly the Thwaites Glacier, which also known as the "Doomsday Glacier." He warned that the collapse of the Thwaites alone could lead to significant sea level rise within the next few decades, with profound implications for global military operations, coastal infrastructure, and international security.Sea level rise is the permanent change humans will live with for centuries, probably millennia, because the oceans have absorbed most of the heat trapped in the Earth's atmosphere. Average sea surface temperatures have climbed by about 0.8 degrees Celsius, or 1.4 degrees Fahrenheit. The Arctic is warming four times faster, about 3 degrees Celsius since 1980, and that has raised sea levels by between 21 and 24 centimeters, or about nine inches, in the same period. John also shared recent warnings about the collapse of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), which drives circulation of seawater globally. Until we lower emissions sufficiently to stop glacial melting, sea level will only rise more and ports, infrastructure, and entire economies will deal with the threat of disruption. Learn more about the organization he cofounded, the Rising Seas Institute, at https://risingseasinstitute.org/. It became a program of Nova Southeastern University on November 1, 2024.
This week, Dave gets boomerific yapping about the new Robert Zemeckis film HERE (3:14), starring Tom Hanks and Robin Wright, and a bunch of other actors who should have known better, as they tackle Zemeckis' latest blundered technology cry-fest. Gah. Then Megan and Evan talk about HIGH TIDE (13:54), Marco Calvani's queer love story, set in Provincetown, Mass., between a heartbroken undocumented Brazilian immigrant and a man leaving the country in a week. Finally, Dave and Megan discuss MUSIC BY JOHN WILLIAMS (34:36), which is a documentary about the storming of the Bastille. Weird that a documentary about the Bastille would be called MUSIC BY JOHN WILLIAMS, right? (Just kidding, it's a documentary about legendary film composer and jazz pianist John Williams. Dave has been sacked. - ed.) Over on Patreon, we loooooved the 1995 Denzel Washington-starring, Carl Franklin-directed DEVIL IN A BLUE DRESS.
