In the premiere of Past Our Prime, two NFL vets take center stage in the sports world from 50 years ago. Ed White was one of the greatest guards in NFL history, blocking for the likes of Joe Kapp, Fran Tarkenton and Dan Fouts. On the cover of the January 7, 1974 issue of Sports Illustrated were the Vikings who had just beaten the Cowboys to advance to the Super Bowl. We'll talk with Ed about the QB's he protected and the greats like Dick Butkus that we went up against. And in college football, Notre Dame won the National Championship on New Years Eve 1973 on a kick by Bob Thomas. He went on to kick in the NFL for 12 years before becoming a Supreme Court Justice in Illinois. He'll tell us about the kick that won the Irish a title, playing with Walter Payton, and how he got elected to the bench. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Hello everyone and welcome to another amazing episode of the Steven Gervais and Friends Podcasts. Today, I talk about the Minnesota Vikings and the origins of the team all the way up to their first Super Bowl loss in Super Bowl 4 to the Kansas City Chiefs. First, we talk about the background of the sport of football in Minnesota starting with the Minnesota Marines and the Duluth Eskimos. Second, I talk about the team's ties with the AFL before they left to get an NFL expansion team in 1960. But the Vikings although granted an NFL expansion franchise in 1960 would not start playing until 1961 which in my opinion they should have stayed with the AFL. Third, I talk about how the Vikings almost got future Vikings head coach Bud Grant who was coaching in Canada at the time to be the first coach but being a wise man he turned it down. After Norm Van Brocklin made life hell for Fran Tarkenton who would later ask and be granted a trade. Norm would quit the team for the second time and then the Vikings went and hired Bud Grant who instilled a different mindset into the Vikings which was led by Joe Kapp on offense and the Purple People Eaters on defense made a run to Super Bowl 4 although they were heavily favored they would lose to the Kansas City Chiefs. This week we discuss the underrated Carroll Dale, the totally obscure (but never-to-be-broken record-holder) Boris Shlapak, Joe Kapp's trailblazing off the field, and lots of missed field goals. Quote of the week: "Pianissimo on those adjectives." Intro-outro music is "Meeting in Rio," by Sam Spence.

Joe Kapp passes, a legend in both CFL and NFL, and was Coach of the Cal Golden Bears in "The Play' versus Stanford Cardinal in the 'Big Game'. Nathan Rourke, no more CFL coaches in Jacksonsville, how does that impact his tryout? (recorded May 16, 2023).

Hello everyone, today I talk about the legendary QB for the CFL and NFL Joe Kapp. Joe lost his battle with Alziemherz's disease on May, 8th, 2023 at the age of 85. He was a QB for the Cal Golden Bears, he also was drafted by the Washington Redskins now known as the Commanders in the 18th round of the 1959 NFL draft but ended but going up to Canada and playing for the Calgary Stampeders and the BC Lions of the Candian Football League. While in the CFL he earned an elite status for leading the BC Lions to a Grey Cup appearance in 1963 and a win in the Grey Cup in 1964. Before the 1967 season, he announced that he wanted to return to the United States and play for the Minnesota Vikings of the National Football League. Also, teams interested in him were the AFL's Oakland Raiders now the Las Vegas Raiders, San Diego Chargers now the LA Chargers, and the Huston Oilers now the Tennesse Titans. He was traded to the Minnesota Vikings in a multi-player trade. Which saw the Vikings get Kapp and the CFL get Vikings player Jim Young who wanted to return to his native Canada. Joe's first season with the Vikings ended with 8 touchdowns and 17 interceptions, but the team showed improvement even though they went 3-5-3. 1968 saw the Vikings improve and play in their first-ever playoff game against the legendary Baltimore Colts now known as the Indianapolis Colts, they would lose that game. But in 1969 the Vikings with the motto of "40 for 60" would make a run led by Kapp on offense and the Purple People Eaters' defense. Kapp at an awards banquet would later turn down the team MVP award saying there is no one most valuable Viking there are forty most valuable Vikings I can't accept this and walked away to a roaring crowd of cheers. The Vikings would make it all the way to Super Bowl 4 where they lost to the Kansas City Chiefs of the AFL 23-7. Kapp would later become a free agent by NFL rules and he was "traded" to the Boston Patriots now known as the New England Patriots. After his playing career was done he would be in movies and tv shows. He would later become a coach and a gm. We here at the Steven Gervais and Friends Podcast wish to show our condolences to the Kapp family and to thank Joe for making the Vikings winners even though we didn't win the Superbowl.Support the show and hope you enjoy My social media links:Instagram:Steven Gervais (@steveng123456) • Instagram photos and videosTikTok:Steven Gervais (@sgandfriendspodcast) | TikTokFacebook group: Steven Gervais and Friends Podcast | FacebookYouTube Channel: Steven Gervais and Friends Podcast - YouTubeDeluxe Edition Network website: The Deluxe Edition NetworkGoodpods:Profile (goodpods.com)my website: Steven Gervais and Friend's Podcast (www.stevengervaisandfriendspodcast.com)Copper Johns beard: https://lddy.no/1gh13use SGANDFRIENDSPODCAST12 at check out for a 10 % discount on your purchase https://www.buzzsprout.com/1983118/support

EPISODE SUMMARY Fresh off a Super Bowl appearance, many predicted the 1970 Vikings would be back in the big game. But Minnesota lost its starting quarterback, Joe Kapp, in a contract dispute, and what turned out to be a great season ended disappointingly. The Minnesota Vikings lost to the Kansas City Chiefs 23–7 in Super Bowl IV, but the Vikings got some measure of revenge eight months later by defeating KC, 27–10, in Week 1 of the 1970 season. They beat the lowly New Orleans Saints the following week, 26–0, but then were upset in Week 3 by an inferior Packers' team. The Vikings bounced back strong the following week by scoring a 24–0 shutout of the Chicago Bears, and they followed that up by shellacking the eventual NFC Champion Dallas Cowboys, 54–13...... The team credo of the 1969 Minnesota Vikings was "40 for 60." In extreme cold with no heaters, in wins, in losses, all 40 members of the team gave it their all for all 60 minutes of the game. The 1969 Vikings, known for their "Purple People Eaters" defensive line and 12 consecutive victories set a record for consecutive wins and defeated the Cleveland Browns in the NFL championship game to reach Super Bowl IV before losing to the Kansas City Chiefs. Their story is told by Hall of Fame head coach Bud Grant, star quarterback Joe Kapp, and defensive end Jim Marshall, who played for 20 seasons and never missed a game.
The bipartisan infrastructure plan championed by President Biden and passed by the U.S. Senate aims to close America's racial and rural broadband gaps. What local challenges lie ahead in the deployment of these resources? And what else can policymakers, industry, and civil society do to support these unconnected communities? Host Nicol Turner Lee dives into these issues and more with the Children's Defense Fund's Oleta Fitzgerald; Joe Kapp from the National Center for Resources Development, and Barry Toser of Declaration Networks Group. EPISODE SUMMARY After a successful college career at Cal, Joe Kapp began his professional football career in 1959, playing for the Calgary Stampeders. Then, in 1961, Calgary traded Kapp to the BC Lions. Kapp led the Lions to a 1963 Grey Cup appearance, and the following year the team won the Canadian championship. Having achieved success in the CFL, Kapp took his skills across the border to the NFL. There he had an ally–Bud Grant–who had coached against Kapp in Canada. Grant thought Kapp would be a good fit for his new team, the Minnesota Vikings. Minnesota had just traded its starting quarterback Fran Tarkenton to the NY Giants, and Grant needed a new man under center...... Once you get to know the nine teams of the CFL, you quickly realize that not only does the league have a lot of moxie, but they have some great personalities and characters. For instance, there is Joe Kapp and Angelo Mosca, fierce competitors on and even off the field. Who can forget that time the geriatric hall of famers exchanged punches at a charity event, the incident of which was fortunately caught on camera. For every CFL fan there is a personality they either love or hate, like Henry Burris, Leo Cahill and the all time winningest coach Wally Buono.
After explaining why he was drawn to Michigan defensive end Kwity Paye as the subject of a pre-draft profile, Tafur breaks down the logic (or lack thereof) behind the Raiders’ offseason moves and assesses the state of the relationship between head coach Jon Gruden and quarterback Derek Carr. Vic then recalls the fateful Daily Cal sports recruitment meeting where he got his first journalism assignment--and the first of many acerbic comments from his exceptionally loud sports editor. We learn about Mike’s introduction to rap music (and the over-the-top article it provoked), how neither he nor Vic have it in them to enjoy the Pac-12’s recent run of hoops success and why Natalie’s youth soccer experiences make her a kindred spirit. Vic shares the backstory behind his exclusive story on then-Raiders receiver Nelson Agholor’s “You suck” speech to his teammates last December, and the charged phone conversation with Agholor that followed. And if you’re still with us toward the end of the episode, you’ll be treated to Vic’s recounting of his infamous Twitter feud with a veteran NFL writer, complete with the obligatory reference to a popular adult-video internet site.

Maya Washington is a filmmaker (writer/director/producer), actress, writer, poet, Creative Director, and arts educator. She received a BA in Dramatic Arts from the University of Southern California and an MFA in Creative Writing from Hamline University. Her work has garnered awards from Jerome Foundation, Minnesota State Arts Board, Minnesota Film and Television, and others.Maya is dedicated to projects that have a sense of “purpose” in the world, selecting stories that illuminate some aspect of the human experience that is untold, rarely seen, or might benefit from new approaches to issues of diversity and inclusion, primarily in America. On this podcast we discuss her film Through the Banks of the Red Cedar! The story unfolds through the eyes of Maya Washington, Gene's youngest daughter, as she uncovers her father's journey and the impact of this legacy on the present generation. Maya traces her father's footsteps from the segregated South to the North, over the course of a modern football season. As she uncovers both the triumphs and defeats of her father's team, she develops a newly formed appreciation for the game and a deeper connection to her father, just in time to witness MSU Spartan Football team ascend to national prominence 50 years later. The racial demographics seen on the field today are due in large part to Hall of Fame coach Duffy Daugherty's innovative approach to recruiting African American men from the South to MSU in the 1960s, known as the “Underground Railroad” of college football. The success of MSU's 1965 and 1966 back-to-back Big Ten and National Champion teams forces America to re-think prejudices that previously kept African American players from earning scholarships or starting positions. The story delves into the triumphs and defeats of Daugherty's integrated team as they finish the season with the historic 1966 "Game of the Century," a 10-10 tie against Notre Dame. Teammates Gene Washington, Bubba Smith , Clinton Jones, and George Webster make history as first round picks in the 1967 draft. Gene Washington and Clinton Jones bring momentum to the Minnesota Vikings, playing in the 1969 Super Bowl alongside legendary teammates Joe Kapp, Alan Page, Carl Eller, Jim Marshall, John Henderson, Oscar Reed, Dave Osborn and Mick Tingelhoff. Maya's interviews with former players recall the highlights of the Minnesota Vikings' "Purple People Eater" years, as well as the racial discrimination black players faced in the league, speaking to the overall impact African American pioneers had on players' rights, including free agency and the right to negotiate salaries. Her appreciation and gratitude for her father grows deeper as together they reveal how what happened 50 years ago is still relevant today.visit www.redcedarmovie.com AwardsMinnesota Film & TV LACH Production Reimbursement Grant || Minnesota State Arts Board Artist Initiative Grant || Minnesota State Arts Board Arts Tour Grant || Jerome Foundation MN/NYC Film, Video, and Digital Production Grant || Audience Choice Honorable Mention – MN Made Documentary Feature – MSPIFF || Curated in “Best of Fest” screening for MSPIFF 2018Official Selection Detroit Free Press Freep Film Festival Louisiana International Film FestivalMinneapolis St. Paul International Film FestivalRochester International Film FestivalBentonville Film festivalColor of Conversation Film Series, AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural CenterMartha's Vineyard African American Film Festival If you liked this podcast, shoot me an e-mail at filmmakingconversations@mail.comAlso, you can check out my documentary The People of Brixton, on Kwelitv here: www.kweli.tv/programs/the-peopl…xton?autoplay=trueDamien Swaby Social Media Links:Instagram www.instagram.com/damien_swaby_video_producer/Twittertwitter.com/DamienSwaby?ref_src…erp%7Ctwgr%5EauthorFacebookwww.facebook.com/Damien-Swaby-213805135363397/

Vikings vs Chiefs… Good morning Horners! Your Minnesota Vikings have flown down to take on the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium. The place is loud and Chiefs fans raucous. It will be a real test for the purple on the road. Whether Patrick Mahomes plays [and word is he won’t] or Matt Moore who ran Andy Reid’s offense well against the Green Bay Packers last week, it will test the ability of Mike Zimmer’s defense and offense to come out hot. Sleeping through the first quarter won’t hack it because this team can put up points. Will it be a shootout or can the Vikings control the game? That is the big question. The Chiefs have some outstanding receivers. They have Tyreek Hill and Mecole Hardman that “are ungodly fast” as Drew says. They also have one of the best tight ends in the league with Travis Kelce. We all know that good tight ends have caused problems in coverage. The Chiefs also base 68% of their offense with the pass, so Zimmer and George Edwards will have their hands full slowing and stopping that aerial attack. Xavier Rhodes, Trae Waynes and the rest of the defensive backfield will have to play at their best. After an Eeore moment by Ted and Drew, all is not lost because Kirk Cousins is hot! Dave apologizes for his overreaction after last week to the guys. He hopes to see lots of Dalvin Cook and the run game, but also would like to see passes beyond ten yards to the Vikings studs like Stefon Diggs, Adam Thielen [hopefully], Irv Smith Jr., Kyle Rudolph, and Dalvin Cook. If the game does turn into a shootout, the Vikes have the weapons to compete. We wrap the show with Drew’s Trivia Challenge, the Vikings vs Chiefs version, and to everyone’s delight, a Don Glover story. This one was about Joe Kapp in Super Bowl IV stirring in a little bit of conspiracy, and who doesn’t like that? This will take you into today’s game prepared and entertained. Are you ready? JB & AMarie Castillo talk about the struggles vs the Bears, how hard it is to root for the Eagles & the keys to a win against the Giants. They talk about movies they have to watch when they are on tv & Skol lore with Joe Kapp & a familiar face playing for the Giants.
Good morning Horners! We thought we put out a special episode today, partly to commemorate 50 years ago, and mainly to discuss that rookies report to camp on Monday. 50 years ago today Neil Armstrong was the first man to step on the moon, also 50 years ago the Vikings entered season in which they won the NFL championship. We are going to start hearing and reading stories about the young crop of rookies, that report to camp Monday and will hopefully yield even better results than the team 50 years ago. Ed Brodmarkle of the Skoldiers Podcast joined Dave and Ted on this happy adventure. Discussions ensued over what stories do we expect to see in what Ted calls, "propaganda week?". There will be stories of course over our early draft choices, like how Garrett Bradbury is the second coming of Mick Tinglhoff, Irv Smith Jr and Alexander Mattison should make a difference, along with Dru Samia maybe winning the starting job from Josh Kline similar to how Brian O'Neill did last year, and never giving it back up. We talked about some of the rookie performances we expect, how after a summer of digesting the playbook, they hopefully wouldn't have lost much knowledge, and how having the pads on should help. We ended the show talking again about that 1969 Minnesota Vikings team, and how Joe Kapp was the villain in Super Bowl III. Ted told us of how his dad, Mr. Don Glover, had a theory that after watching the best football team and season ever played, that Joe, fighting with the Vikings over a salary and contract dispute, may have thrown the game. We all miss Don Glover, and I can just imagine him now railing as he told the story. Court is in Session! Criminal lawyers Adam Goodman and Scott Cowan are joined by Barry Davis to discuss teammates fighting, more like infighting. The Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan case is explored. What are some of the legalities that never came to the fore? How has a case like theirs influenced modern day precedent? In the MLB, the altercation between Jonathan Papelbon and Bryce Harper explores how an injury, if sustained during the row, would be handled by insurance and the team. Would the team be covered by insurance if one teammate injured another? CFL Players Angelo Mosca and Joe Kapp got into fracas at a league luncheon. What legal mechanisms were in place on behalf of the league? Did they act accordingly? Something called social host liability is discussed. Scott Cowan drops a mind blowing legal bomb about bar fights that sends the trio off into a rabbit hole. Its a great organic conversation that develops. The guys finish off with “The British Soccer” riot and how the effects of the riot affected those in the stands. Do the fans have a case, legally, with regards to trauma? Is the soccer club liable? Yeah… All that. Its Outta The Court!
A star at Cal-Berkley, Joe Kapp led the Bears to a Rose Bowl victory and was drafted by the Washington Redskins in the 18th round of the 1959 NFL Draft. However, Washington and Kapp squabbled over terms, and Kapp decided to take his game north to the Canadian Football League and the Calgary Stampeders. After spending two years with Calgary, Kapp was traded to the British Columbia Lions (in 1961) and led them to a Grey Cup Championship in 1964. But winning in Canada wasn’t enough for Kapp. A native of New Mexico, he wanted to play in the U.S. and after the 1966 season made his intentions known. Somehow, some way, Jim Finks, the General Manager of the Minnesota Vikings engineered an incredible trade, and tricky transaction that involved trading players, waiving players and four teams: the Vikings, the expansion New Orleans Saints, the CFL’s BC Lions and Toronto Argonauts. But the move paid off for the Vikings and in just three years, Kapp led Minnesota to an NFL Championship. But … his career in Minnesota was short-lived. He only played for the Vikings for three years, and just one year for the Patriots before his career was over. But what a career it was. Edward Gruver who has written several articles for the Professional Football Researcher’s Association, and who has a new book coming out about the great rivalry between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Oakland Raiders called, “Hell With the Lid Off: Inside the Steelers-Raiders Rivalry That Changed Pro Football,” joins the podcast for a look back at the fabulous career of Joe Kapp. Links: Sports' Forgotten Heroes website Sports' Forgotten Heroes Patreon Page Sports' Forgotten Heroes twitter ©2018 Sports' Forgotten Heroes
