In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we're re-airing one of our favorite episodes from last year. We hope you enjoy revisiting this crucial and enlightening conversation with some of Chicago's best.  At Certiport, we are determined to help students of color rise to new levels of success and education, while listening and learning from others on the best ways to become true anti-racist advocates. Shifting our classroom and education mindset is crucial to correct racial and economic inequities.  For this week's episode, we had the privilege of sitting down with two amazing professionals from the Chicago Public School system: Dr. Nadine LeBlanc and Robert “Rob” Lee.  Dr. Nadine L. Leblanc's professional career spans more than 25 years as an educator, building a track record of outstanding performance in teaching as well as in administration. Her most recent efforts are on a project she has labeled “Racism, Response and Responsibility” as an act of resistance to the systemic issues that still threaten Blacks within the U.S. The project includes an equity initiative called “When Black and Brown Men Teach” which engages male educators of color in the Business and IT department in Chicago Public Schools, while they mentor and coach male students of color. She lives and breathes her philosophy that is etched in the belief that all children can and will learn, given the opportunity and resources. Rob Lee has been teaching at Michele Clark Magnet High School for the past three years and has been an instrumental part of the When Black and Brown Men Teach program. Born and raised on the westside of Chicago, Rob has always had a knack for technology and that knack drove him to make a career switch from the transportation industry to technology. He received his bachelor's in information technology from the University of Phoenix and his Master's in Information Security from Phoenix University. He started his career at CPS in 2014 and has been dedicated to his students every day since.  In this special episode, we talk about the “When Black and Brown Men Teach” initiative, what Rob and Dr. LeBlanc have done to help their Black students thrive, and how creating brave and authentic classrooms can show Black students that there isn't one way to be a successful Black professional.  You can learn more about empowering students of color on our blog: https://certiport.pearsonvue.com/Blog/2020/August/Empowering-Students-of-Color.  Read through additional information about the “When Black and Brown Men Teach” initiative here: https://blog.cps.edu/2021/11/17/black-and-brown-men-teach/.  Dr. LeBlanc has also graciously offered her Journey to Justice presentation, for teachers who want to spark conversations and trainings at their schools: https://certiport.filecamp.com/s/JourneytoJustice_DrLeBlanc/d

According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, only 13% of engineers are women. Helping the next generation of female students pursue careers in engineering requires concerted focus and dedication from professionals and educators alike. In this week's episode, we're highlighting a panel discussion we hosted with five incredible female engineers: Kaylee Janett, a fourth year chemical engineering student at the University of Idaho; Meridian Haas, a mechanical and aerospace engineering PhD candidate at the University of California at Davis; Samantha Daniels, a Massachusetts Builder Designer with EDM; Natalie Nguyen, Oklahoma Mechanical Engineer with Balon Corporation; and Elowyn Yager, Professor of Environmental Engineering at the University of Idaho.  These incredible women shared their passion for engineering and talked about how they first decided to pursue this traditionally male-dominated field. They shared vulnerable experiences they've had, facing sexist views in their education and workplace journeys. Most importantly, they discuss strategies to expand access to engineering learning for tomorrow's female engineers. Prior to leaping into a teaching career, Greg was a Senior Mechanical Designer/Project Manager for HVAC projects in both the design build and plan-spec marketplace. Greg has been an Autodesk student & user since 1997 with a primary focus on AutoCAD and Revit. Greg has an A.S. in Engineering Technology, and holds several accreditations including LEED AP O+M, WELL AP, Fitwel Ambassador, Autodesk AutoCAD Certified User, as well as a MA Construction Supervisor License to name a few. In this episode, we chat with Greg about all things engineering. You've probably heard the joke, “Engineers aren't boring people. They just get excited over boring things.” But, that doesn't have to be true. Engineering doesn't need to be boring, and Greg is out to change that perception with his students.  Listen for Greg's ideas to make engineering the coolest class at your school. He covers some of his favorite tools and topics, plus assignments that didn't go down as well as he'd hoped. Find out how to make engineering and design come alive!  If you'd like to connect with Greg for additional ideas (or just to geek out over engineering), you can reach him at gking@mccanntech.org. You can also watch for more of Greg's ideas from our webinar: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WyqbVGcKDdY. Education is the scaffolding around which students can build a successful life. However, students and young people often don't see the big picture. Educators, particularly in the CTE space, need to connect students' experiences more explicitly with relevant job roles and future career pathways. But how do you open your students' eyes to the skills they have and the future jobs they can pursue? Offering context and integrating your classroom with the workforce is crucial.  In this episode, we were privileged to discuss skills contextualization with Dr. Krystal Rawls. Dr. Rawls is the designer of the Workforce Integration Program at California State University, Dominguez Hills. Building on a foundation of theoretically sound and data-driven practices, Rawls endeavors to create transparency and equity in workforce development programming to develop a more diverse, digitally competent, and skilled class of worker. Dr. Rawls draws on her transdisciplinary background in Education, Psychology, and Business to inform her innovative approach to empowering students to take their place in the modern workforce.  Using labor market information to identify the skills needs of employers and curriculum data to evidence skills developed in the academic experience, Krystal creates community through skill-based language.  In her role as an analyst and faculty member, Krystal gets to indulge her passion for building opportunities and relationships that are beneficial to the student, educator/worker, as well as industry and community partners.  Dr. Rawls welcomes opportunities to create meaningful workforce partnerships and develop pathways for positive economic outcomes for all. With Dr. Rawls we discussed how to help students contextualize and understand their skillset, and how to let go in the classroom, and create authentic learning experiences. With context, your students will see that they're not “just” students, but professionals in training.  Dr. Rawls mentioned some incredible resources to continue your learning. It's no secret that employers are increasingly looking for employees with coding skills. In fact, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, advanced coding and tech jobs such as software development are expected to grow 22% over the next decade. Preparing students with coding skills is no longer optional. Now, there are educators out there who know everything about coding—and then there's the rest of us—asked to teach coding because we've had limited exposure to coding in some form. So, how does someone who's not an expert teach coding like a genius? Coding in Minecraft is the answer. In this episode, we sat down with Jennifer Brown, Product Specialist for Coding in Minecraft, to dive deeper into this new program. Jennifer has 18 years' experience as both an educator and a trainer.  She is a Global Minecraft Mentor, Microsoft Master Trainer, and Minecraft Certified trainer and has trained hundreds of teachers on game-based learning through Minecraft: Education Edition. As a former computer science and CTE teacher, Jennifer is dedicated to the ideal that all students should have access to computer science courses.  As the Product Specialist for Coding in Minecraft, Jennifer continues this dedication by training teachers how they can bring computer science to their students through the engaging, game-based curriculum of Coding in Minecraft.  Listen and learn about the value of coding education (and it's not always about learning to code), and how the Coding in Minecraft program can make coding accessible and fun for teachers and students everywhere.  Learn more about Coding in Minecraft here: https://certiport.pearsonvue.com/Certifications/Credentials/Coding-in-Minecraft/Overview.  You can also request a free demo of the program here: https://codingcredentials.com/.

Once upon a time, when people wanted to start their own business, they went down to the bank. There was physical space to lease, equipment to buy, and people to hire.Maybe it was a coffee shop, retail store, or professional services form. Or maybe light manufacturing or a car dealership. Sometimes the profits were substantial, other times meager. But there was always a lot on the line if things didn’t work out.About 20 years ago, the idea of starting a business changed due to the tech startup craze. Now it was about raising a Series A, then B, then C … and then IPO or acquisition. Profit wasn’t part of the equation, only insane levels of growth that very few achieved, despite the relentless focus on the relatively few success stories.During that same time period, however, a third way arose. A way to build a business using the reach of the Internet, the power of technology, and the creativity of entrepreneurs who very much focused on profit, all while mitigating risk with digital business models. Oh, and there was no need to deal with investors, because who wants that kind of meddling? It’s the “third way” that Chris Guillebeau’s new book The Money Tree (https://amzn.to/2VknDaz) focuses on. And yes … it’s also the approach taken with the 7-Figure Small strategy for smart business building.Chris joins us in this episode to discuss the third way and his new book. He also shares tips for generating extra income from his previous book Side Hustle (https://amzn.to/34O2UyI), which is a companion to his popular podcast Side Hustle School.***This episode is brought to you by Freshbooks, cloud accounting software designed specifically for freelancers and solo business owners. Today's Guest is Phenomenal, we have joining us Abdulhakim Haliru, he is a Software Developer,  Tech Evangelist, Co-Organizer for WeCodeNG, he is the CTO of Leproghrammeen and a serial entrepreneur. Today he shares with us his story and lessons he has picked from a really long career in technology. "Do note that you will not have all the answers at the beginning, but ignorance is not an excuse. Be ready to walk the talk, it takes a lot to be successful, be ready for eventualities. How prepared you are determines how you react to situations."   Notes from Today's Episode: Even our mistakes shape our paths, it adds up. Our success story is a product of our experiences Learn emotional intelligence, it does a lot for your career and business Have values, ethics play a major role in the decisions we make and who we become It takes an inordinate amount of effort to make an impact in the market place or in career. Consistency will help you standout. Don't focus on the buzz words or hype, learn to kill the noise Business skill, people skill, there is also an element of marketing needed; evaluate your strengths and weakness before starting out in business Because you have failed at one thing, doesn't mean you are a failure.   Demystifying myths The Myth that the entrepreneur's path is easy is wrong; this makes a lot of people jump on the entrepreneurship bandwagon and they are not ready to do what it takes. Technology is profitable and attractive, but you need to do a lot of work and also you need to have an open mind to learning. Learn to fail fast and learn to laugh at yourself. You need to be prepared and understand what it really takes to be an entrepreneur.   Remember to go out and create Awesomeness, I am looking forward to hearing from you, send in your comments via email:  thecreativeschronicles@gmail.com, remember to subscribe on iTunes, Google Podcast and any other podcasting app you use, just search for thecreativeschronicles on your podcasting app and subscribe, thank You!   Show Notes: LeProghrammeen - http://www.leproghrammeen.com/ Follow Abdulhakim on Twitter - @ https://twitter.com/hakeemhal

I am so moved by the unique, deep and profound story of today's guest. Nichole Sylvester is an unapologetic spiritual success coach, author and transformation speaker on a mission to guide people home to themselves. Her work helps many to discover their innate power and undeniable purpose.  In this episode, we dive deep into the inspiration behind her memoir, OH SHIFT, A Journey from Chaos to Consciousness (releasing May 17th on Amazon)  At the most tumultuous time in her life, Nichole found herself battling with drug addiction while raising a young child in the midst of an abusive relationship. Shortly after escaping from the relationship, Nichole received notice that a woman had been murdered in her home.  This interview dives into Nichole's inward quest to heal on a higher level of consciousness.  In this episode, you will learn:  -About the resiliency of the human spirit -That just because you've gone through "shameful" experiences does not make you unworthy -Nichole's story about battling drug addiction and the generational patterns that destroyed her family -The one part of you that remains unbroken and undamaged -About relationships and the role they play in your life -How to own and accept yourself for who you are  -How to show up if you are an entrepreneur with a mission on your heart  -What happens when you own your story -Attachment to your identity and how it holds us back   This episode and Nichole's memoir will set many free.    Nichole's Quotes Throughout the Episode:   "People shift when they have wounds around love.”     "Everything that happened to me was perfect. We don’t know the higher reason for all of that."   "The things that we find shameful and we think disqualify us form the goodness in our life...it has so much power and strength and it connects us with other people and it's part of the human experience.    "When we admit and own all of us, we can find our power in so much of it."     "If you are here and there is a mission on your heart and you step up for it, the way will be shown.”        "If we can own all of us and accept it then other people can to."     "Our personalities are created to adapt to our environment and to dis-identify with it and allow yourself to play and to be role less."     "What were really afraid of is that we’re going to lose love.  We’re never going to lose love by honoring who we are.  Our desires are a direct call to action from the Divine. So why do we deny them or doubt them."     "You are in the midst of your biggest victory story."   Resources   Website: www.nicholesylvester.com https://www.instagram.com/nicholesylvester/   The Bali Giveaway + Book Release Details : https://nicholesyl.clickfunnels.com/ohshiftwaitlist   Join our Private Tribe for the 5 Day Meditation Challenge  https://www.facebook.com/groups/1577116269016352/

Supply Solutions Enterprise Six Sigma Business Success Planning Meredith Reuben Show 046 Start up Round We discussed supply solutions, Six Sigma and Business Success Planning with Meredith Reuben, CEO of EBP Supply. A quick glimpse into the legacy of her family business helps reveal why Meredith’s pull to lead it was so strong. In 1918, her grandparents, Samuel and Sadye Baum, started EBP Supply Solutions as Easter Bag & Paper in Bridgeport, CT. BP Supply Solutions is a leading distribution partner that provides a broad range of cleaning and foodservice supplies and services for businesses that rely on best-in-class insight, products & tools, and demand custom, transparent relationships. The company services organizations in the eastern United States across buildings, institutions (including government and education), healthcare, recreation, and food service markets. Headquartered in Milford, CT, it operates out of three distribution centers (Milford CT, Tewksbury, MA, and Cranbury, NJ) and achieves national distribution in partnership with Network® Distribution Services. EBP is fully-owned and operated by Meredith Reuben, CEO; is classified as a Women’s Business Enterprise; and holds WBENC National Certificate Number 243449. For more information, listenup to the interview. Meredith Reuben left her job as a lawyer to lead the family business, EBP Supply Solutions into its third generation of ownership. During her tenure, EBP Supply has grown from a local distributorship servicing a small area in Connecticut to a regional supply solutions enterprise. Meredith reveals how natural curiosity, undeterred perseverance and focus can help you achieve whatever goals you wish to reach. Meredith was in her late 20s when she walked away from her law career to join the family business. EBP Supply Solutions, which was known as Eastern Bag & Paper at the time. EBP continues to grow by making smart acquisitions like Salem Paper in the Boston area. These continued smarter acquisitions strengthened their ability to service the entire State of Connecticut. As Meredith worked to grow the business, she was also growing her family. She admits that it was a challenging time as she balanced the demands of the business and the needs of her young children and hard working lawyer husband. “As a mother, you are in operational mode when your kids are young,” she said, “It can be stressful. But early on, learned to set an annual priority list. That really helped me to allocate my time between career and family. Sure, I felt the guilt, I was there to drive them to school, and I made it a point to be home for dinner so I could hear about their day and do homework with them. Making that the priority and aligning the rest of my activities around that helped me tremendously.” While she credits having a Supportive spouse, she also started a walking group with other women in the neighborhood. This sisterhood helped offer support as she worked to balance the challenges of career and family. Meredith led her EBP Supply Company a new 166,00 square foot facility in Milford Connecticut just 12 miles north of Bridgeport. This enabled them to consolidate operations into a centralized warehouse. They also have two additional facilities each with 166,000 square feet. Meredith represents the third generation of leadership in the family business and now how son represents the fourth generation. Looking back, she recognizes the many challenges she overcame during that period, including the difficulties of identifying how she wanted to approach her management and leadership style. “Whether or not you are inheriting the company from your mother or father, or succeeding in your position from a strong manager, one of the biggest challenges- particularly, if it is going from male to female- is what kind of persona or style should you assume?” Her father and mother had great names in the industry and quickly learned that she did not have to copy their styles or strengths. What she needed was to be congruent to her own personality and utilize her strengths, and surround herself with people who supplemented areas where she wasn’t strong, contribute all of her efforts in her own unique way. That effort proved to be ambitious- she led the Company through several subsequent acquisitions and along with her team, grew EBP to be a regional distributor which now serves enterprises in all of New England and the Middle Atlantic States, The desire to help people grow and success had helped drive EBP’s strategic plan. Recognizing that an organization can only be its best when driven by a diverse group of stakeholders with different voices and backgrounds, she is working with the leadership of EBP to set goals around diversity, Meredith works to empower women through mentorship programs within EBP, Locally and internationally. She does this through local family business groups, the ISSA Hygieia Network, and through WIN, which is a group within Network Distribution, an international buying and selling organization. She wants to see more women in leadership positions throughout the cleaning industry. She has surrounded herself with a highly capable team of professionals who have brought skill sets to continuously improve the efficiency, productivity, Culture and operations in place. Her son Andrew is currently the Vice President of Marketing,: One of her favorite poems, which she keeps on her desk to inspire her daily, is “if,” written by Rudyard Kipling On the best advice, she’s received: “Understand the objectives and ignore all the noise.” – Jerry Rueben, her father. Meredith on leading: if you’re going to survive and thrive, you need to read, be Curious, and constantly have a learning and open mentality. She surrounds herself with people who share this same quality. It’s whom she hires.
