This week, President Trump signed executive orders that profoundly affect teaching and learning. The most immediate involves mass deportation and authorizing immigration agents to make arrests at schools. To understand how the education community is navigating these developments, we contacted teachers, principals, superintendents, education reporters, and immigration lawyers. We encountered intense emotions and confusion; many were unwilling or unprepared to speak publicly. We eventually found a group that was willing to share their thoughts, feelings, plans, and resources they're using. Most of all, they offered their best reasons for hope amid the uncertainty ahead. My guest on this episode is Stephen Maher. Stephen has been writing about Canadian politics for decades as a columnist and investigative reporter at Postmedia News, iPolitics, and Maclean's. His work has won numerous awards, including the Nieman Fellowship at Harvard University, the Michener Award for meritorious public service journalism, a National Newspaper Award, two Canadian Association of Journalism Awards, and a Canadian Hillman Prize, and has been nominated for several National Magazine Awards. He is also the author of a handful of thriller novels, which we talk about briefly in this episode. Stephen's most recent book is The Prince: The Turbulent Reign of Justin Trudeau, was published in May 2024 by Simon & Schuster Canada. The Globe & Mail called the book “a thoroughly researched and fair-minded accounting of Justin Trudeau's accomplishments and failings.” Stephen and I talk about the very recent and ongoing chaos surrounding Trudeau and his government, the particular stresses of researching and writing a biography of an acting political figure whose fortunes could change at any moment, and the book he is currently working on, about another Canadian icon with a very tarnished brand: the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. This podcast is produced and hosted by Nathan Whitlock, in partnership with The Walrus. Music: "simple-hearted thing" by Alex Lukashevsky. Used with permission.
Greg Marchildon speaks with Stephen Maher about The Prince. The Prince is a comprehensive biography of Justin Trudeau's time as prime minister, written by Stephen Maher. Based on over 200 interviews, it details how Trudeau transformed the Liberal Party from third place to a majority government in 2015. The book examines his political skills, achievements like poverty reduction, climate progress, and Indigenous reconciliation, as well as his struggles, including errors in judgment and internal conflicts. Maher explores how Trudeau's leadership, once promising, faltered due to missteps and strained relationships, leading to a decline in popularity and the potential collapse of his government. Stephen Maher has been writing about Canadian politics since 1989. As a columnist and investigative reporter for Postmedia News, iPolitics, and Maclean's, he has often set the agenda on Parliament Hill, covering political corruption, electoral wrongdoing, misinformation, and human rights abuses. He has also won many awards, including the Nieman Fellowship at Harvard University, the Michener Award for meritorious public service journalism, the National Newspaper Award, two Canadian Association of Journalism Awards, a Canadian Hillman Prize, and has been nominated for several National Magazine Awards. Corinne Dufka is an American photojournalist, human rights researcher, criminal investigator, and psychiatric social worker.Following completion of her master's degree in social work, Corinne worked as a humanitarian volunteer and social worker in Latin America. She volunteered with Nicaraguan refugees during the country's revolution, and with victims of the 1985 Mexico City earthquake. She then moved to El Salvador as a social worker with the Lutheran church. While in El Salvador, Corinne became close with local photojournalists, and was asked by the director of a local human rights organization to launch a program to document human rights abuses through photography.Over the course of her subsequent twelve year career as a photojournalist she covered more than a dozen of the world's bloodiest armed conflicts across three continents and was honored with the Robert Capa gold medal; a World Press Club Award; a Pulitzer nomination; and the Courage in Journalism Award. In 1998 Corinne went to Nairobi, Kenya to cover the bombing of the American Embassy. She arrived hours after the blast, and was deeply frustrated by 'missing the scoop.' Later, upon watching the news coverage of the attack, Corinne realized that she had lost “compassion” for the subjects of her work, and resolved to end her career as a photojournalist. After leaving photojournalism, Corinne joined Human Rights Watch, a non-governmental organization. In 2003, she was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship, alternatively known as a ‘genius grant', for her journalistic and documentary work documenting the 'devastation' of Sierra Leone and the conflict's toll on human rights.Corinne left HRW in 2022 and is now an independent researcher and advisor, focusing on helping countries mitigate the risk of armed conflict. Corinne has a daughter and a foster son and lives in Maryland with her four dogs. Corinne's new book This Is War: Photographs from a Decade of Conflict is out now, published by G Editions. In episode 216 Corinne discusses, among other things:Her reasons for publishing a book of her photograhsThe experience of revisiting her archiveHer transition from psychiatric social worker to photojournalistHow she learnt the basics of photography in El SalvadorHow her family history and a challenges in childhood formed her independenceGetting badly injured in BosniaThe relative dangers of different types of conflictHer experiences of violence in LiberiaThe epiphany that led her to walk away from photojournalismHer work with Human Rights Watch‘Curiosity and compassion'Making an impact“I just don't do ‘hopeless'. I constantly try to find a way of having impact. And photography has so much impact. Using people's voices through testimony has so much impact. And one has to believe that people are inherently good and they inherently care and that they can be moved when presented with these images. People in positions of influence. So that is a given in everything I've done. That this work will have an impact. It may have to be repeated again and again and again, multiplied by other practitioners in photography or human rights, but it will have an impact.”

Now they have the best restaurant in the country. This conversation can be viewed on YouTube When Race Trumps Merit: How the Pursuit of Equity Sacrifices Excellence, Destroys Beauty, and Threatens Lives is the latest book by bestselling author Heather Mac Donald. Mac Donald sounds an alarm about the erosion of meritocracy through “disparate-impact” ideology in science, medicine, jurisprudence, and art. While concerns about civilizational decline are not a laughing matter, Peter Boghossian injects a playful element to this interview by taking on the role of a progressive and challenging Mac Donald to defend her claims. Mac Donald shares her research and views on equity, the scientific method, credentials in medicine and law, colorblind meritocracy, classical music, crime, and the skills gap, all while affably referring to Peter as “Mr. Lefty.”Heather Mac Donald is the Thomas W. Smith Fellow at the Manhattan Institute, a contributing editor of City Journal, and a New York Times bestselling author. Her writing has appeared in various publications, including the Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, The New Republic, and The New Criterion. Her numerous honors include the Integrity in Journalism Award, the Eugene Katz Award, and the 2005 Bradley Prize.

On March 7, 2022, The front page of the New York Times ran a graphic photograph that summed up the tragic cost of Russia's war on innocent Ukrainian civilians. It was a photograph of a mother, her two children, and a church volunteer crumpled to the ground. They were the victims of a Russian mortar attack on civilians as they attempted to flee over the Irpin River to Kyiv. The photo, which was was taken by the Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Lynsey Addario, sent shock-waves throughout the world. Capturing that image also put Lynsey Addario in grave danger, something that she has confronted many times over during her more than two-decade career as one of the most accomplished war-photographers in the world. Addario has had boots on the ground in Ukraine since the begining of the Russian invasion. And, as we near the one year anniversary of the war, she describes the toll of the conflict on Ukrainian civilians and reflects on the personal cost of covering conflict. Ukraine is just one of the war zones that Addario has traveled in and out of, on assignment for The New York Times, National Geographic, and other publications for more than two decades. In 2015, American Photo Magazine named Addario as one of the five most influential photographers of the past 25 years, saying she changed the way we saw the world's conflicts. I spoke with Addario when she made a brief stop in Washington DC on November 3rd to receive the prestigious Courage in Journalism Award from the International Women's Media Foundation. This is my third conversation with the fearless Addario. To hear her personal story of how she became a photojournalist, how she covers major conflicts, how she survived a violent kidnapping in Libya, and why she does the work she does, do check out my previous interview with Addario on my leadership podcast, When It Mattered, Episode 35. It's an incredible story. And do listen to Addario's previous appearance on Techtopia, Episode 18, as she reflects on the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks and the aftermath of the chaotic pullout of U.S. troops from Afghanistan. Some serious "Old Man Yells At Cloud" energy to start this week, as I moan and gripe about the price of hamburgers. We talk about fast food prices and try to figure out inflation versus profit margins and it goes exactly as well as you'd assume. We then dive into listener emails, including one in which we bring two Canadians together for a lifelong friendship. Fun stuff! Chuck then relates the tale of his evening at the Rhode Island Press Awards and laments not asking for leftover appetizers.- Brad MP3 Download
