Most of us are familiar with “screen time,” the hours we spend on electronic devices, but what about “green time,” the moments we spend outdoors? While managing screen time is important, maximizing green time is equally vital for our health. Pediatricians Pooja S. Tandon, MD, and Danette Glassy, MD, FAAP, co-authors of Digging Into Nature: Outdoor Adventures for Happier and Healthier Kids, share how time in nature can transform wellbeing. From improving mood and mental health to reducing stress, boosting immunity, and supporting physical fitness, they explain how stepping outside can lead to a healthier, happier life for our children and ourselves.

In a world where every click leads to a purchase and every decision impacts the planet, the conversation about sustainability is more relevant than ever. Today I'm joined by Monica Richards, creator of the ecobabe consultancy + collective, who shares how to achieve sustainability individually and collectively. We discuss the essentiality of sustainable living practices such as minimalism, upcycling, and eco-advocacy; the power of personal responsibility and corporate action in achieving significant environmental improvements, including a 30% reduction in global emissions; and the crucial role of personal reflection in driving individual and systemic change towards environmental stewardship. Monica Richards is the founder and co-founder of two conscious companies: ecobabe and The Collective. Ecobabe is an online community, lifestyle brand and blog where people are empowered with the tools and products to live more sustainably. The Collective is a global community where like-minded individuals come together with one common mission at hand: united action for a regenerative world. What we discuss: (0:06:55) - Monica's journey towards environmental advocacy, fashion industry insights and the challenge of making sustainable consumer choices (0:13:20) - Minimalism and the "having method”, and the benefits of upcycling and supporting small businesses (0:29:54) - The importance of language in environmental discussions and how to be an advocate for grounded, common-sense approaches to environmental activism (0:41:12) - The shift in corporate attitudes during Climate Week in NYC, where companies are now actively seeking environmental solutions, and corporate initiatives like Green Time (0:52:25) - The importance of introspection for personal and planetary health. In certain school systems, it is perhaps more common to find students dissecting samples and diagraming abstractions. The boys in the Lower School at The Heights, however, begin their scientific formation not in a lab, among dead specimens, but in nature, among living creatures. Their text book is not full of paper, but of paper's source, trees; for their primary text is the book of nature itself. In this week's episode, Eric Heil takes us outdoors--so to speak--for a discussion of natural history. With over fourteen years of experience teaching at The Heights, in addition to having spent time as a researcher both for at the Bronx Zoo and the Smithsonian's National Zoological Park, Eric offers us thoughts both practical and lofty. First, Eric explains what natural history is and how it differs from other ways of approaching science at the elementary level. Then, he considers what a typical natural history lesson might look like. Next, Eric expounds the elements of nature journaling, a typical exercise for a natural history class. In particular, he explains John Muir Laws' three step framework for nature journaling: Explain what you see. Expound on what the observed reality makes you think of. Wonder about what you do not yet know. Lastly, the discussion takes a turn for the transcendental, as Eric considers some of the existential fruits of natural history. Beyond books and diagrams, and indeed even the boy's own words and sketches, the study of natural history draws students into that mystery which moves those animals they have found. Perhaps this is the reason why natural history has been deemed the most important subject taught in the Valley: the silence that it instills is the beginning of a prayer; indeed, the greatest prayer, which is gratitude. “Let's go outside” took on new importance for families during the pandemic. Supervised school recess and organized sports were canceled in many places leaving parents fully in charge of the children's physical activity. Backyards, driveways, and parks became safer gathering places than meeting indoors, making “going outside” a social benefit in addition to a physical one.In this episode, Dr. Lindsay Malloy talks with Dr. Genevieve Dunton, a psychologist who studies physical activity and nutrition, and Dr. Mariela Alfonzo, an urban design and behavior researcher, to understand how the time we spend in green spaces impacts our mental, physical, and social wellbeing. Listen in to hear how the pandemic has affected children's outdoor time, what inequities exist in who has access to outdoor spaces, how parents can advocate for community green spaces, and advice on how parents can incorporate more outdoor time into their family's day-to-day activities.Included in this episode about being outdoors:- How has the pandemic impacted children's outdoor time?- What are aspects of our physical environment that make families more or less likely to spend time outside?- What does the research say about the mental health benefits to children of being outdoors?- What can parents do to encourage more equitable outdoor spaces in their community?- How can parents encourage more outdoor times for their families?Meet Our Guest Experts:Genevieve Dunton, Ph.D., MPH is a Professor of Population and Public Health Sciences and Psychology at the University of Southern California. She earned a doctorate in Health Psychology from the University of California, Irvine, and a Master of Public Health from the University of Southern California. Dr. Dunton received post-doctoral training in physical activity, nutrition, and cancer prevention from the Cancer Prevention Fellowship Program at the National Cancer Institute. Dr. Dunton´s research examines health behaviors related to chronic disease risk in children and adults, with a focus on physical activity and nutrition. She is the Director of the USC REACH (Real-Time Eating Activity and Children's Health) Lab, whose goals are to develop, test, and apply real-time data capture methodologies and applications, using smartphones and wearable sensors, to better understand the effects of psychological, social, and environmental factors on eating and physical activity. She is the PI on numerous studies funded by the National Institutes of Health and the American Cancer Society, author of over 170 peer-reviewed publications, and past Chair of the American Public Health Association Physical Activity Section. Dr. Dunton is also past Chair of the National Physical Activity Plan Public Health Sector Committee and a past member of the National Academy of Sciences Committee on the Implementation of Physical Activity Surveillance Strategies.Bridging the worlds of academia, practice, and entrepreneurship, Dr. Mariela Alfonzo is an internationally renowned thought-leader and speaker, with 20+ years of experience on the nexus between urban design, behavior, and the quadruple-bottom line. For over two decades, her work has focused on quantifying how the micro-scale aspects of the built environment affect our behaviors, perceptions, and decisions, and in turn, how these impact health, broadly defined to include physical, social, environmental, and fiscal health, to more effectively advocate for better, more spatially equitable urban design. Dr. Alfonzo is the Founder and CEO of State of Place, an AI-driven urban design software startup that helps city-makers make more effective, cost-efficient, and transparent design, planning, and development decisions, which maximize social, health, environmental, and economic value, build community trust, and drive consensus. State of Place helps city-makers harness the power of their street-level urban design data, predictive analytics, and scenario modeling and forecasting tools to create more livable, equitable, sustainable, and economically thriving places. Additionally, in 2014, Dr. Alfonzo was named one of Urban Land Institute's 40 under 40 best young land-use professionals around the globe; is a New Cities Foundation Placemaking Fellow; is a Fulbright Scholar; and a Research Professor at NYU Tandon's School of Engineering. She holds a Ph.D. in urban planning from UC Irvine, as well as a Masters in Urban Planning, and a BA from the University of Miami in psychology and architecture.

We all know how tough the isolation period has been, and look, screen time rules have well and truly slipped in most households. Homeschooling combined with parents trying to work from home, has meant a LOT more Minecraft and endless episodes of My Little Pony. I know I'm not the only one… But now that restrictions are lifting, it's time to take back control and swap all that screen time for some green time. There's no doubting the benefits of kids getting outside in nature. It can enhance their creativity, lower stress, improve their mood, mental sharpness, well-being and productivity, help them build better social connections, and promote physical activity. It also has helps children learn, probably a lot more than watching Spanish kid's unwrap stuff on YouTube… So, I've found some ways to help you get your kids put down the device and head out into nature's classroom.
