Come with us on a road trip!  In this episode the Crew discusses their experiences as we toured the famed Biltmore Estate here in Asheville, North Carolina and visited the King Tutankhamen exhibit on the estate grounds. George Vanderbilt, grandson of shipping entrepreneur and industrialist Cornelius “the Commodore” Vanderbilt, began purchasing land in Asheville area in 1888 ending up with 125,000 acres for what would become his country estate. Vanderbilt hired architect Richard Morris Hunt to design and build the 250-room château, the largest single family home in the United States. The house opened to guests for the first time in December of 1895. Listen as we discuss the synchronicities that accompanied us on the drive to Asheville, as well as some of the spirits and energies we experienced inside the house and on the grounds of the estate. After having been introduced to the galactic Hathor beings through Joanna the Healer, each of the crew has gone on to develop their own personal relationship with them and have been told through channeling of the beings that we all share a connection to them and to ancient Egypt. With that information it becomes obvious why we all felt it necessary for us to experience the exhibit showcasing the structure of King Tut's sarcophagus and tomb, as well as all the treasures that were found inside together.    It is now possible to book 1:1 mediumship or energy healing sessions with your favorite Ohm-g Podcast Host.Check out everyone's offers here: https://ohm-gpodcast.com/products Check out our memberships!! https://www.buymeacoffee.com/ohmgpodcastllc/membership  Check us out on Facebook @ohmgpodcast and Instagram @ohmg_podcast.  Send us an email at support@ohm-gpodcast.com to get on our mailing list for monthly virtual and live events. During the 19th century and culminating in America's Gilded Age, the public's deep fascination for all things Egypt led to "Egyptomania," a craze which affected design, style and cultural and social thought. As a result of wave of exploration and discovery, predominantly by French, English and American parties, the world gained a view into one of the world's most ancient cultures. Architecture, fashion and interior design were all influenced by the passion for this emerging ancient culture. In this show, Carl is joined by scholars and Egpytologists Dr. John Darnell and Dr. Colleen Darnell to delve into not only how an understanding of ancient Egypt was evolving during the 19th century but its social and cultural impact. Visit the Gilded Gentleman website for a list of all showsFollow Carl on one of his walking tours! “Mithril! All folk desired it. It could be beaten like copper, and polished like glass; and the dwarves could make of it a metal, light and yet harder than tempered steel. Its beauty was like that of common silver, but the beauty of mithril did not tarnish or grow dim.”Gandalf, The Fellowship of the Ring (J.R.R. Tolkien)Perhaps the most famous fictional metal of all time (at least until adamantium and vibranium came along), mithril is the rare metal found in Middle-earth from J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings saga and Peter Jackson's movies. It is as strong and beautiful as it is durable. Lightweight and virtually impenetrable, it's a boon for adventurers and warriors. And while this stems from a world full of magical spells and creatures, one that was incredibly consistent throughout its original novels (and the screen adaptations that followed), you might be surprised at just how scientifically sound the concept of mithril is!Does mithril hold up to our scientific and story scrutiny the way it does swords, arrows, and everything else the forces of Mordor can throw at it? SUGGESTED VIEWING Peter Jackson's core Lord of the Rings trilogy, Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King, aren't just the finest fantasy films ever made, but some of the best movies of the 21st century, full stop! Watch them! Jackson also made a trilogy of prequel films based on The Hobbit, but they aren't as beloved and we can't call them essential viewing. We'd also like to point out that the prequel TV series The Rings of Power on Prime Video deals in part with the very origin of mithril itself, so if you need some deeper Middle-earth lore, you should give that a look. And for the newest installment in the screen version of the saga, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is a lush, ambitious anime, which is currently in theaters.FURTHER READING Do you want to delve a little deeper into the facts, concepts, and stories Hakeem and Tamara referenced in today's episode? Of course you do! The Lord of the Rings SagaIf you haven't read the trilogy of novels that make up the core Lord of the Rings saga, you're missing out on the foundation of virtually all pop culture fantasy. Read ‘em in order! The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King. Optional reads include the prequel (and perhaps most famous and beloved) The Hobbit and the almost textbook-y deep lore exploration, The Silmarillion. The Basics“The properties of any material depend most strongly on two things: the types of bonds that it forms, so you might remember in high school talking about ionic bonds, covalent bonds, and metallic bonds. The other characteristic of how a material behaves involves the metallic or molecular structure.”For the purposes of this episode, though, pay particular attention to the concept of how metallic bonds behave.Crystal Lattice StructuresIsn't Mithril beautiful and shiny? Sure! Crystals are often shinier than metal, but they're more brittle. The reason is because of how regularly the atoms are arranged (don't worry, we're bringing this back to Mithril in a moment).GrapheneOh, you want your metal armor to be both strong and lightweight? That's where a carbon fiber known as graphene comes in.Radiometric DatingFor when carbon dating just isn't enough to get a sense of the age of something!Tut's DaggerBecause history is often just as cool as fantasy, King Tutankhamen had a dagger made from the ore in a meteorite!Psyche (Asteroid)An asteroid worth over a quintillion dollars that could solve some of our natural resource problems? NASA is on the case. By the way, check out one of Tamara's favorite shows, For All Mankind, which deals with an “external resource” that changes the course of human history.WANT MORE FROM DOES IT FLY?This isn't the first time we've discussed fantasy metal alloys on Does it Fly? so check out our episode on Lara Croft: Tomb Raider.Want more pure magic and sword and sorcery action from us? This week Nat leads Aly down a rabbit hole about Ancient Egyptian curses! Even before humans could translate the hieroglyphs on ancient Egyptian tombs, rumors existed that curses were written on the entrance to a Pharaoh's final resting place. The most famous of ancient Egyptian curses was enacted in 1922 after the discovery of King Tutankhamen's 3,300 year old sealed tomb. 9 of the 52 people present at the tomb's opening ended up dying of sudden illness or freak accidents immediately following the opening of the tomb. We're headed WAY back in time to Ancient Egypt to discuss the life and death of the most famous Egyptian pharaoh, King Tutankhamen. Despite the fact that the "Boy King" was in power for a mere decade, the finding of his burial site influenced modern culture in ways you can only imagine. But this isn't really a history podcast... What we're really doing hanging out with the major players in the 18th Dynasty of Ancient Egypt is because of the alleged Mummy's Curse. In the 1920s when archaeologists and Egypt enthusiasts, Howard Carter and Lord Carnarvon, and the people present mysteriously started dying, word of the Curse of the Pharaohs spread like wildfire. On this episode of The Lady Dicks, the #DickSquad is digging into life in King Tut's crew, inscriptions written on the tombs of Egyptian royals, who died from the alleged curse and whether or not it's real. Oh, and we're also travelling to the Valley of the Kings and telling you about a few of the ghosts that lurk around the area.   For listeners of a certain age, a song about King Tutankhamen immediately brings Steve Martin to the mind's theater. His “King Tut” mock-reprimanded the commercialization of the Treasures of Tutankhamen exhibit that toured from 1976 to '79.  But this one, “Old King Tut”, was recorded in 1923, the year AFTER the ancient Pharaoh's tomb was found. Howard Carter and company made the discovery at a time when many had abandoned the famous Valley of the Kings. Shortly after confirming the validity of their find, Carter sent a telegraph to the dig's sponsor, Lord Carnarvon: "At last have made wonderful discovery in Valley; a magnificent tomb with seals intact; re-covered same for your arrival; congratulations." But When Carnarvon arrived three weeks later, the team found that they'd not been the first visitors to the tomb: "At first, their enthusiasm was somewhat dampened, for at the top left-hand corner of the blocking were signs of re-closure, suggesting that the tomb had been entered during antiquity. They began by clearing the descending corridor, which also showed signs of a robber's efforts. By 4:00 pm on the afternoon of November 26th, the corridor was cleared and the team found a second door, again faced with plaster, stamped over with oval seals, and re-closed at the top left-hand corner. Not knowing what lay behind this doorway, Carter made a small hole in it and inserted a candle to test for foul gases. He then peered into the void beyond, reporting: "At first I could see nothing, the hot air escaping from the chamber causing the candle flame to flicker, but presently, as my eyes grew accustomed to the light, details of the room within emerged slowly from the mist, strange animals, statues, and gold - everywhere the glint of gold"." The Draconid meteor shower should be at its best late tonight. Bits of comet dust will burn up as they slam into the atmosphere, forming the streaks of light known as meteors. Unfortunately, though, the Moon will be in the way at the shower’s peak, so only a few meteors will shine through. The shower gets its name from Draco, the dragon. All its meteors appear to “rain” into the sky from that direction. Meteors sometimes survive their plunge through the atmosphere. On the ground, they become known as meteorites. Some of them are made of iron and nickel. For many cultures, these were a precious resource. And if the meteorite was actually seen to fall from the sky, then it held mystical qualities as well. Some meteorites were made into knives, axes, and swords — perfect for killing dragons. Egypt’s King Tutankhamen, for example, was buried with an iron knife made from a meteorite. And in ancient Rome, a meteorite was flattened to make a shield. In 1621, a ruler in India had two swords and a dagger made from a meteorite. And in 1898, five swords were made from a single large meteorite found just a few years earlier. One of them was presented to the crown prince, Yoshihito, who later became emperor. And in 1814, a British meteorite expert had a sword made for Alexander the First of Russia. It was intended to honor the emperor for his role in ending a war with France — giving him a truly cosmic reward. Script by Damond Benningfield Support McDonald Observatory

1922 British archaeologist Howard Carter and his workmen discover a step leading to the tomb of King Tutankhamen in the Valley of the Kings in Egypt. After World War I, Carter began an intensive search for “King Tut's Tomb,” finally finding steps to the burial room hidden in the debris near the entrance of the nearby tomb of King Ramses VI in the Valley of the Kings. On November 26, 1922, Carter and fellow archaeologist Lord Carnarvon entered the interior chambers of the tomb, finding them miraculously intact. Thus began a monumental excavation process in which Carter carefully explored the four-room tomb over several years, uncovering an incredible collection of several thousand objects. The most splendid architectural find was a stone sarcophagus containing three coffins nested within each other. Inside the final coffin, which was made out of solid gold, was the mummy of the boy-king Tutankhamen, preserved for more than 3,000 years. Most of these treasures are now housed in the Cairo Museum. 1956 A spontaneous national uprising that began 12 days before in Hungary is viciously crushed by Soviet tanks and troops on November 4, 1956. Thousands were killed and wounded and nearly a quarter-million Hungarians fled the country. The problems in Hungary began in October 1956, when thousands of protesters took to the streets demanding a more democratic political system and freedom from Soviet oppression. In response, Communist Party officials appointed Imre Nagy, a former premier who had been dismissed from the party for his criticisms of Stalinist policies, as the new premier. Nagy tried to restore peace and asked the Soviets to withdraw their troops. The Soviets did so, but Nagy then tried to push the Hungarian revolt forward by abolishing one-party rule. He also announced that Hungary was withdrawing from the Warsaw Pact (the Soviet bloc's equivalent of NATO). Soviet tanks rolled into Budapest to crush, once and for all, the national uprising. Vicious street fighting broke out, but the Soviets' great power ensured victory. At 5:20 a.m., Hungarian Prime Minister Imre Nagy announced the invasion to the nation in a grim, 35-second broadcast, declaring: “Our troops are fighting. The Government is in place.” Within hours, though, Nagy sought asylum at the Yugoslav Embassy in Budapest. He was captured shortly thereafter and executed two years later. 1995 Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin is fatally shot after attending a peace rally held in Tel Aviv's Kings Square in Israel. Rabin later died in surgery. The 73-year-old prime minister was walking to his car when he was shot in the arm and the back by Yigal Amir, a 27-year-old Jewish law student who had connections to the far-right Jewish group Eyal. Israeli police arrested Amir at the scene of the shooting, and he later confessed to the assassination, explaining at his arraignment that he killed Rabin because the prime minister wanted “to give our country to the Arabs.” Born in Jerusalem, Rabin was a leader of the Arab-Israeli war of 1948 and served as chief-of-staff of Israel's armed forces during the Six-Day War of 1967. After serving as Israel's ambassador to the United States, Rabin entered the Labour Party and became prime minister in 1974. In 1977, Rabin resigned as prime minister over a scandal involving his holding of bank accounts in the United States in violation of Israeli law. In 1992, Rabin led the Labour Party to election victory and became Israel's prime minister again. In 1993, he signed the historic Israeli-Palestinian Declaration of Principles with Palestinian leader Yasir Arafat and in 1994 concluded a formal peace agreement with the Palestinians.

This week, it's the story of King Tutankhamen's Curse, which is a bit more superstitious than our usual fare. But stick with me, because there's more to this urban legend than you might at first suspect. In the gilded age, the lore and lure of the mystical power of Egypt was a pervasive component of popular culture. Foremost in the imaginations of the public were the various curses associated with tombs unearthed in the Nile River Valley. Of all the bad luck and strange circumstances that fueled belief in this phenomenon, the most infamous was surely the Curse of King Tutankhamen. After his tomb was opened by Howard Carter and Lord Carnavon, the Pharaoh set out on a reign of terror that haunted the lives of those who had contact with his burial chamber for decades to come. At least, the newspapers said that was the case. Then maybe it was a fungus, or spores, or a something science-y, maybe? Or maybe it was much ado about nothing? Or maybe Aleister Crowley killed them all? Yeah, you're right. That doesn't make sense, but we're still going to be discussing that theory, and many more this week as we look at the facts, fiction, and cultural landscape that helped create the curse of pharaohs.
