The 30th episode of ‘Everyday Business with Aidan Donnelly' is a little different to the norm! We recently staged the first in our ‘Next Step' series of events in the magnificent surroundings of the old trading floor of The Irish Stock Exchange (Euronext) Building in Dublin, to an audience of business owners and entrepreneurs. Every entrepreneur reaches a point in the evolution of their business when they are faced with the crucial decision of the ‘Next Step' on its growth pathway and how that will be funded. For some, selling the business to a larger company makes the most sense, but for others, taking on external capital to scale up the business is more appropriate – in some cases, that external financing comes in the form of taking the company public on the stock market. There is no one right answer, so with this event, we hoped to provide insights into each route from business people who have done it before. We had an excellent panel comprised of Dermot Crowley, CEO of Dalata Hotel Group plc, the largest hotel operator in Ireland and with a presence in the UK and continental Europe; Leo Mac Canna, CEO and Founder of Ocuco Ltd, a thriving multinational software company with thousands of customers worldwide, who recently had Accel-KKR invested €60m in the company to help fuel its global expansion; and Mark Little, founder and successful seller of the Storyful and Kinzen media businesses. This podcast brings you insightful conversation between Aidan Donnelly and entrepreneurs and business owners/management with their own unique story to tell. A series of Inspiring Women Entrepreneurs events will take place in the first half of 2024 to introduce women with entrepreneurial ambitions to the idea of starting their own business. The first in the series will kick off on Wednesday, January 24th. The events are part of an initiative called Inspiring Women Entrepreneurs which is now in its second year and is supported by Enterprise Ireland and KPMG. The programme aims to ignite a flame among women with entrepreneurial ambitions to start a business but who may not have yet taken steps towards making their aspiration a reality. Research tells us that almost one in five women in Ireland aspire to start their own business. The Inspiring Women Entrepreneurs initiative is focused on encouraging women to develop business ideas that are scalable, innovative and focused on export markets. The programme is designed to appeal to women from a range of backgrounds who are seeking a change of direction, including female professionals and women in senior corporate positions, or those with doctoral and postdoctoral qualifications. The first event - and the launch of Inspiring Women Entrepreneurs 2024 - will be held at KPMG's office at Stokes Place, St Stephen's Green, Dublin 2, on Wednesday, January 24th. Attendees will hear the inspiring stories of successful entrepreneurs Louella Morton, co-founder of TestReach, and Leonora O'Brien, founder and former CEO of Pharmapod. They will be available to answer any questions attendees may have about the realities of starting and growing a global business. A limited number of places are still available for this event, click here to register. Other scheduled events include one hosted by Technological University Dublin at its Grangegorman Campus on St Brigid's Day, February 1st, as well as an event hosted by PayPal at The Merrion Hotel on March 5th, during International Women's Week. To register for the Technological University Dublin event, click here and to register for the PayPal event, click here. Other events, yet to be announced, will be held through to June 2024. Key to the initiative is the panel of 11 Inspiring Women Entrepreneurs, a group of successful businesswomen whose achievements mirror the entrepreneurial ambition the programme is seeking to inspire. Panel members have all volunteered their time to the initiative and have been selected on the basis of their professional experience, their backgrounds in corporate life and academia, and their experience building innovative companies across a range of sectors. Panel members include: Áine Kerr, co-founder of Kinzen; Áine Denn, co-founder of Altify; Andrea Doolan, co-founder and CEO of Atlantia Clinical Trials; Dr Anne Cusack, co-founder of Critical Healthcare; Dr Barbara Anne Murphy,Head of Equine Science at UCD and Chief Science Officer at Equilume; Dr Emmeline Hill, Professor School of Agriculture and Food Science at UCD and founder of Equinome; Fidelma McGuirk, Founder and CEO of Payslip; Jennifer Corley, founder of EquiTrace; Leonora O'Brien, founder of Pharmapod; Louella Morton, co-founder of TestReach; and Dr Vanessa Creaven, co-founder of Spotlight Oral Care. There are three stages in the Inspiring Women Entrepreneurs initiative for those wishing to develop a scalable, export-focused business. Inspiring: Ambitious women interested in hearing directly from those who have successfully taken the step into entrepreneurship are invited to join one of a series of events hosted by partner organisations around the country, so they can judge for themselves if they are interested in starting their own business. Those interested in beginning their own entrepreneurial journey will be offered the opportunity for further support. Fostering Entrepreneurial Capacity and Peer Networks: Those who can demonstrate that they have an innovative business idea with global ambition will be invited to apply to participate in a series of facilitated round tables and a series of workshops facilitated by En...

At one point in the post-truth era, fact-checking seemed like the way back to a shared reality. Just get evidence-based truth out there, and disinformation would slink away in disgrace. Snopes, Kinzen, Meedan and others are built on that belief. Unfortunately, it didn't work out that way. Falsehood still seems to have the drop on truth. So, today's guest joins me to help us understand why. Angie Drobnic Holan is a journalist and long-time editor-in-chief of Poltifact, one of the world's premier fact-checkers. She was also recently named a Nieman Fellow at Harvard to examine the role of journalism in democracy. Angie and I will cover the role of fact-checking in social media today; the case for and limits of objective truth; and the practice of fact-checking when evidence is evolving, as in the case of the origins of Covid-19.

Hey everybody, I'm Joe Miller and here's what's going on in the world of tech law & policy this week.  White House Proposes Tech ‘Bill of Rights'   The White House's Office of Science and Technology Policy proposed a new Tech ‘Bill of Rights' Friday targeting harms caused by artificial intelligence and biometric technology. Comments are due on January 15th. The Request for Information seeks details on how companies use these technologies and what interventions the federal government should make to defend the Constitution as things like facial recognition, voice recognition, keystroke analysis, and other tactics that infiltrate every aspect  of our lives take hold.   Abortion advocates push back against license plate reader company, Flock   Abortion advocates are fighting against a fast-growing company called Flock, which aims to provide law enforcement with advanced license plate-reader surveillance technology. In the wake of the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, 13 states now criminalize abortion procedures.   Supreme Court to determine limits of Section 230    The Supreme Court will decide whether Section 230 of the 1996 Communications Decency Act shields social media companies from liability for content posted by alleged terrorists. The family of one of the victims of the 2015 Islamic State terrorist attack in Paris sued YouTube for aiding and abetting terrorists by recommending the extremist group's content. Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act grants websites blanket immunity for content posted by third-party users. Many on both sides of the aisle have been advocating to reform the provision.   Spotify acquires content moderation platform, Kinzen   As Spotify continues to grapple with hateful content and misinformation bypassing the music streaming giant's content moderation protocols, the company has decided to bring more content moderation capacity in house. It announced last week that it has acquired Dublin-based Kinzen to more effectively deal with harmful content in real–time.   Google to pay State of Arizona $85 Million to settle user-tracking suit   Google has settled with State of Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich's office regarding a claim that the tech giant continued to collect users' location data after users indicated they wanted location tracking turned off. Google will pay the state of Arizona $85 million. A separate multi–state lawsuit against Google is pending in the US District of the Southern District of New York which alleges that Google abuses its market dominance in online advertising.   New Democrats push for federal privacy law that's currently stalled in the House   Finally, a centrist coalition of Democrats led by State of Washington Representative Suzan DelBene is pushing for passage of the American Data and Privacy Protection Act (ADPPA), which has been stalled in the House since it passed committee over the summer. The Electronic Frontier Foundation says the bill offers a lower privacy standard than the one adopted by several states.  To go deeper, you can find links to all of these stories in the show notes. Stay safe, stay informed, have a great week. Ciao.

Going for Growth has begun accepting applications for the 15th year of the award-winning business development scheme for female entrepreneurs. The programme, which is supported by Enterprise Ireland and KPMG, assists ambitious female entrepreneurs to achieve their growth ambitions and the deadline for applications for the 15th cycle is Friday, November 18, 2022 Going for Growth has seen more than 850 businesswomen take part over the past 15 years. Some of the past participants include Aimee Connolly of Sculpted by Aimee; Áine Kerr of Kinzen; Jennifer Corley of Equitrace; Louella Morton of TestReach; Tara Beattie of Mange Tout and Prepsheets.com; and Vanessa Creaven of Spotlight Oral Care. (Details of these and others are in the end notes) Going for Growth, which was launched in 2008 to help women drive their business forward, has been repeatedly recognised by the EU, OECD, and European Institute of Gender Equality as a key initiative in the effort to foster greater ambition among female entrepreneurs and to support their growth aspirations. Fifteen years ago, Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) research clearly showed that men were more ambitious than women in respect of their new businesses – 5.5 times as many men had growth aspirations. The most recently published GEM research (July 2022) shows there is an increasing number of women starting businesses, about 1,400 every month. Even more importantly, the proportion of those with growth aspirations has significantly increased; this ratio now stands at 2.5:1, with an increasing aspiration for growth evident among female entrepreneurs. Continuing the work to help women achieve their business growth ambitions, the call has gone out for applications for the next group of Going for Growth participants to take part in the 15thcycle of the programme. Up to 60 places will be available and organisers are seeking applications from female entrepreneurs across all sectors who are strongly focused on growth. The deadline for applications is Friday, November 18, 2022. There is no charge for those selected and the six-month initiative will begin in January 2023. The programme brings together female entrepreneurs for monthly peer-to-peer roundtable discussions led by successful Lead Entrepreneurs with the aim of growing their business. The participation of Lead Entrepreneurs is completely voluntary and five of this year's Lead Entrepreneurs are former Going for Growth participants themselves. This year's voluntary Lead Entrepreneurs include Anne Cusack, formerly Critical Healthcare; Chupi Sweetman-Durney, Chupi; Jeananne O'Brien, Artizan Food Co.; Leonora O'Brien, formerly Pharmapod; Louise Phelan, Phelan Energy Group; Monica Flood, formerly Olas IT; and Oonagh O'Hagan, Meaghers Pharmacy Group. The 14th cycle of Going for Growth reported significant results for its 57 participants. Combined turnover increased from €35million at the start of the cycle to €43m by the end, a 23% increase in just six months. Their combined workforce increased by 41 people over the cycle, while 27 participants began exporting their products and services for the first time. Feedback from the previous cycle was also extremely positive, with 88% of participants saying that their involvement brought about practical change within their business and 93% saying they felt nearer to achieving their ambitions. All participants said they would recommend Going for Growth to others. That support does not end on completion of the six-month cycle, with most past participants becoming part of the Going for Growth community. Going for Growth alumni can apply to participate in the Continuing the Momentum programme, which offers Lead Entrepreneur-facilitated roundtables to those looking to continue their growth journey, with the aid of peer support, focused goals, and milestones. CEO of Enterprise Ireland, Leo Clancy, said: “Increasing support for ambitious female entrepreneurship is a key national priority and Enterprise Irel...

In the fight against disinformation, the last line of defense between audiences and malicious falsehoods are the “trust and safety” teams, also known as content moderators. Some of them are employed by social media platforms like Facebook and Spotify, but increasingly the platforms outsource the work of identifying and countering dangerous lies to fact-checking organizations like the fast-growing Irish company, Kinzen. In this episode of In Reality, host Eric Schurenberg sits down with Áine Kerr, co-Founder, and COO of Kinzen. Áine is a serial risk-taker with extensive experience in the intersection of journalism and technology, most recently as the global head of journalism partnerships at Facebook. Kinzen helps platforms, policymakers, and other defenders “get ahead and stay ahead” of false and hateful content in video, podcast, and text platforms. The company uses artificial intelligence to sniff out objectionable content and then when needed, invites human readers to judge for context and nuance. What Kinzen calls  “human in the loop technology” minimizes errors while still allowing for fact-checking at social media scale. In the recent Brazilian elections, for example, Áine explains that disinformation actors came to realize that phrases like “election fraud” and “rigged election” were alerting content moderators who could take down their false claims. So, the actors began substituting seemingly innocuous phrases like “we are campaigning for clean elections.” Kinzen's human moderators spotted the changes and helped authorities intercept the false messages. Áine and Eric also dive into the many reasons that someone may participate in sharing harmful content online, ranging from sheer amoral greed to ideological commitment. She ends with a warning that the spreaders of disinformation currently have the upper hand. It is always easier to spread lies than to counteract them. The allies of truth–researchers, social media platforms, entrepreneurs, and fact-checking organizations like hers–need to get better at coordinating their efforts to fight back, or democracy will remain an existential risk around the world.

The panel dives deep into the problems and opportunities for media in a technology-dominated landscape. In his first extensive public commentary since his company's examinership, Niall McGarry also addresses the issue of the ‘click farm' incident in 2017 that saw the publisher of Joe.ie and Her.ie lose a substantial amount of revenue from advertisers after an employee was found to have manipulated listenership figures on an AIB-sponsored podcast. “It was so isolated, such a one-off and so unique to a publisher like us that I think a lot of people jumped on it and made it a much bigger story than it was,” he says. “It gave a huge amount of traditional media organisations an opportunity to have a pop at us because we came out of nowhere. We didn't come from the Dublin media set. We had created something new.” Mr McGarry says that he wants to “put the incident behind us and move on”, instead focusing on “some of the amazing work we've done”. “I think our organisation has been incredibly impactful on things like the Eighth Amendment referendum and on marriage equality. We were the first brand to get out there and get behind a yes campaign.” Niall believes that the company is “too big to fail” and has “too important a role” in Ireland not to emerge from its current High Court examinership process. "I need help" - the 3 most powerful words any manager or entrepreneur can say. Aine Kerr is a serial risk taker. She left her permanent pensionable teaching job at 20, to retrain as a journalist. She left her high-profile political correspondent role in the Irish Independent to join international media start-up, Storyful, during the recession. She then moved to New York to become Facebook's manager of Journalism Partnerships. And now, Aine is back in business start-up phase, co-founding Kinzen, an app that puts people, around the world, in control of their news. Aine talks us through her decision-making processes, and the key practices that have allowed her to take big risks and dream big. She also reveals her weaknesses in business and how she overcomes them thanks to one nifty thought. Lastly, Aine talks us through negotiating titles in the workplace and how to manage staff if you're an ambitious perfectionist, who finds it hard to delegate. Click Here To Download
