Dans la région montagneuse du Bongolava, 52% des enfants souffrent de malnutrition chronique. Reportage sur ces Hautes-Terres centrales. Le poignet souple, Lanto mélange avec ardeur le liquide blanchâtre dans sa bassine. Progressivement, la pâte s'épaissit. « J'achète les ingrédients au marché à la ville : la soude et l'huile. Après, je rajoute l'eau et je fabrique le savon à la maison, une fois par semaine. Une bassine pleine comme celle-là, ça me fait 60 morceaux. Je vends en priorité aux membres de notre Association Villageoise d'épargne et de crédit. Et s'il en reste, je peux aussi le vendre à d'autres villageois », explique-t-elle.L'hygiène, un pilier de la lutte contre la malnutritionSi la vente de savon permet d'accroître les revenus de celles qui en fabriquent, elle a surtout permis de rendre plus accessible un produit d'hygiène de base, mais coûteux, financièrement et en déplacements. Un produit pourtant essentiel dans la lutte contre la malnutrition ... « La lutte contre la malnutrition, c'est évidemment d'avoir une alimentation équilibrée. Mais la cause sous-jacente de la malnutrition, c'est aussi la question hygiène. Et ça, on le sait moins ». Reine Rasoamiaramanana coordonne les actions sur terrain dans la région Bongolava, pour Action Contre la Faim. « Même si on est bien nourri, le manque d'hygiène crée la dénutrition. Je pense notamment aux effets des maladies diarrhéiques ... Donc on promeut les techniques de lavage de mains au niveau de nos bénéficiaires », dit-elle.Se laver les mains, un geste accessible et vitalSeulement, l'ONG s'est rendu compte que beaucoup de familles bénéficiaires des programmes de lutte contre la malnutrition n'adoptaient pas les comportements enseignés. « Pourquoi ça ? Parce qu'ils n'ont pas à disposition de savon, les savons sont très chers et ne sont pas à leur portée. C'est pour cela qu'on leur a appris à fabriquer eux-mêmes leur propre savon », indique-t-elle.Dans la commune rurale d'Ambararatabe où vit Lanto et dans ses environs, rares sont donc les habitants qui marchent encore 3 longues heures pour rallier la ville la plus proche pour y acheter du savon. À cinquante kilomètres de là, au pied des collines rases d'Ankadinondry Sakay, Dina et Safidy, deux jeunes agricultrices, se sont elles-aussi lancées dans la production artisanale des précieuses barres blanches. « Avant, j'achetais du savon à chaque fois que j'avais du linge sale. Et quand je n'avais pas d'argent, bah je ne pouvais pas faire la lessive et le linge s'accumulait. Maintenant, plus besoin de se casser la tête pour savoir où et quand trouver du savon : j'utilise le stock que je me suis fabriqué », dit l'une. « Et en plus, c'est 3 fois plus rentable de le faire soi-même ! » ajoute l'autre. « Oui, et maintenant, on peut se laver les mains avant de préparer les aliments, et on peut aussi dire aux enfants "filez nettoyer vos mains avec du savon avant de manger !" et ils y vont », raconte-t-elle. Petits changements pour grands effets. Le lavage des mains au savon a déjà démontré les impacts majeurs sur la santé publique partout dans le monde. Couplé à une alimentation plus nutritive, il contribue aujourd'hui à réduire la malnutrition sur l'île.
