Steve Dennis, a strategic advisor and author of "Leaders Leap: Transforming Your Company at the Speed of Disruption," joins us to share his insights on the keys to successful leadership in a rapidly changing world. Our conversation highlights the importance of maintaining a competitive edge and thriving amidst uncertainty, providing listeners with actionable takeaways to enhance their leadership journey. One of the key themes we explore is the challenge of ego in leadership. Through personal stories and industry examples, we examine how clinging to outdated thinking can hinder progress. elcome to another episode of the Testing Peers podcast, this time we have a slightly different show for you.Regular host, Chris is joined by the wonderful Heather Reid, as we look back over the brilliant article Heather wrote back in 2017 - 30 Things Every New Software Tester Should Learn on the Ministry of Testing site. Before we look back at Heather's article, we talk about anything from our past online that we might find a little cringey. Then we review the article, written almost exactly six years ago, talking through all 30 tasks, and Heather provides some insight into each task, as well as where she would make changes, remove or replace any task.We cover a lot of interesting topics, and below are links to some of the things we discuss.QA In Your Job Titles? - Ministry of Testing (The Club)Learning How to Learn: Powerful mental tools to help you master tough subjects - CourseraMaking Work Visible: Exposing Time Theft to Optimize Workflow by Dominica Degrandis (Book via Amazon)Ministry of Testing - Go Pro!Team Guide to Software Testability: Better software through greater testability by Ash Winter and Rob Meaney (Book via Amazon)Fifty Quick Ideas to Improve Your User Stories by Gojko Adzic and David Evans (Book via Amazon)Starting Your Software Testing Career by Nicola Lindgren (Book via Leanpub)How Can I Test This? by Nicola Lindgren, Mike Harris, Suman Bala, Philip Wong, and Shawn Shaligram (Book via Leanpub)Testing Web APIs by Mark Winteringham (Book via Amazon)Contemporary Exploratory Testing by Maaret Pyhäjärvi (Book via Leanpub)Would Heu-Risk it? About Eva KeiffenheimEva Keiffenheim left teaching in Summer 2020 to become an EDUpreneur. Her life's mission is to make education fairer and better for as many learners as possible. She is a writer, and helps research, consult, and implement education projects. She also co-founded Speed Up, Buddy!, an NGO to support first-gen students. She shares in her weekly newsletter of +3K subscribers, Learn Letter, where she shares useful tools and resources.Key takeaways:Eva shares the three things that organisations can do to help their employees become lifelong learners:Provide opportunities for continuous learning. This might be a formal learning pathway that is made up of courses or collections of resources. It could be structured stretch projects, peer groups or suggested workplace learning activities.Leverage from powerful technologies. Studies have shown low completion rates come from limited engagement, e.g. just watching videos, and there are plenty of EdTech solutions that help provide more active learning, for example Maven, a cohort-based course (CBC) platform. Ultimately, adopt technologies that can help facilitate ways of engagement, e.g. testing, leaderboards and immediate feedback.Make space and time to learn and practice. It helps learners get into the flow of absorbing information, and gets them out of the ‘content consumption' trap. The main thing is to make sure that learners have enough time to repeatedly practice what they're learning. The human brain's ability to recall information diminishes, and it's no flaw of human memory, so include this fact in your corporate learning designs. E.g. revisit the topics, don't just lecture!Good grades alone don't reflect acquired learning. Having just a visual dashboard and tracking time spent are not enough. Consider accountability systems and ways to embed motivation within your learning platform.Encourage learning exchange and the concept of learning in public through feedback and connections. For example, share your notes or internal blogging.Segmented time stamps:[02:50] The three things organisations can do to help their employees become lifelong learners[05:41] Why it's important to schedule in time for learning[07:47] Key strategies to practise new skills in the corporate environment[09:12] Leveraging technology to acquire new skills[13:36] The role of dashboards and measuring real progress[20:28] How to make the most out of note taking[22:27] Applying cognitive science to your learning design[27:22] Eva's key advice to L&D expertsLinks from the podcast:Connect with Eva on LinkedInEva's WebsiteFollow Eva on MediumFind more about Roam Research Read the book Make It StickRead the book Atomic HabitsDo a course on MavenDo the course Learning How to Learn: Powerful mental tools to help you master tough subjects with Barbara Oakley

Sponsored By: Show Notes [00:00:50] Ben starts things out by telling us he’s always trying to hack on new technology methods and trying to keep up with new libraries getting released, so he asks Ari and Tessa what would be their first instinct to learn about Vue 3 Teleport? Tessa’s answer is the BEST! [00:04:31] The topics of comments, context, and conference talks are discussed here. [00:11:00] Ben asks Ari when she starts getting into the deeper level things, the written piece, what are some things she finds that have been helpful or things that have not worked when she reads blog posts or those kinds of things? Tessa has some things to share as well. [00:18:40] Ben asks Ari and Tessa when it comes to learning new things, are there things that they have come across, whether it’s writing styles or talks and are there things that get in the way of your learning? [00:24:00] Tessa brings up something in animation called “Onion skinning” and she explains what it does. Ben talks about writing and how it’s a difficult skill which most people don’t have a lot of training in. [00:27:57] The panelists all discuss language in writing code and how the intent is to make something less intimidating, but it frustrates people sometimes. [00:33:01] Tessa tells us a great story here about some advice she got from a product manager she met. Ben also has a great story and advice to share. [00:38:35] Tessa mentions Linux and included language and how it is hard to figure out how to sign up for it, but there is a website that will help you which is linked below. [00:39:15] Tessa talks about learning journeys and how everybody’s situation is slightly different. Ari mentions how it’s a very important skill being able to teach a concept as well as to be able to give constructive feedback. Today’s guest joins us from Knoxville, TN. Zach Tetley is relatively new to the real estate investing business but has already figured out some of the keys to success. In today’s episode, he shares some of his story of how their business got started and what they learned along the way, as well as some steps you can take as someone first starting out to help you scale, make smarter hires, start making deals, and manage your SEO. This episode is full of actionable steps you can do today! Key Takeaways: [2:00] Zach has been wholesaling for a little over a year now, after coming from a background of restaurant management. He decided to move from one career into real estate investing to see what kind of opportunities there were. [4:27] Zach took a big risk giving up his career to do real estate full time. He prepared by listening to podcasts and finding guidance on YouTube and the internet. Now he’s in a place where he has a team in place that is successful. [9:30] Zach spent the first few weeks of being in this business falling down and getting right back up again. Now he has built a team, but it wasn’t always easy. They would pour their capital back into the business, and continued to build the team. [12:20] Zach talks about some of the mistakes they made at beginning of their business. One of the big ones is that they didn’t have their core values defined. The second is that they realized they weren’t making enough offers, and this is something they fixed quickly. [15:15] If you’re brand new to the business, and you’re being consistent on deals within a market, then you might be ready to hire someone to take over aspects of the job that you don’t want to have on your plate. [17:27] Working in your business and working on your business aren’t the same thing. If you want to have a business though, you have to be willing to put in the work. The first steps to take are write down every single process you have in your business, and also expectations. This will help you make smarter hires. [21:08] Once you start making money, you can start building out your business’s SEO. It is important to have a website, with original and unique content that will drive traffic to your website. [26:00] Start by doing some research on where you feel comfortable getting a website, and what the best businesses are. Get referrals from people who have what you want in their business. [30:03] Once you start getting out there and talking with sellers, you have to master negotiating. When you’re talking with potential sellers, make sure you really listen to what they’re saying and calculate your response before you give it. This allows you to ask the right questions and really figure out the seller’s motives. [34:57] In Zach’s business, they are looking to expand into the Chattanooga market, and they are getting ready to launch a company to offer their systems and training tools to other people. [39:32] One of the most important takeaways from this episode is the importance of making deals. You won’t be able to make any deals if you’re not making offers. There is a lot to focus on when you first get started but make sure you’re focusing on bringing in some money first. If you've ever wanted to improve at a skill, sport or job or become the best at whatever you do, but have been told you're not talented enough, didn't start early enough, or that you don't have 10,000 hours to spare, then do we have the show for you! Today we'll be talking with Anders Ericsson, a preeminent leader in new science of expertise, and the researcher behind Malcom Gladwell's 10,000 hour rule from his book Outliers. He's also the author of a brand-new paradigm shifting book I believe and hope will set the stage, for backbone of education and performance for decades to come. Today we'll talk about expertise, what it is, where it comes from, how you can achieve it, what we all can learn from others who have it, how to help develop it in ourselves and our children, and why we can almost all dramatically improve our performance in almost any area we put our minds and hearts too. That plus we'll look at homo erectus and homo exercens, Maverick, Viper, and Iceman, Blue Bunny Ice-Cream, Paganini and the Broken Strings, and What a Banana Monk and a Pot have to do with anything. Questions and Topics Include: Expertise – how you can achieve How we can develop expertise in almost any area we put our hearts and minds in What does Mozart have to do with expertise Why Mozart wasn't really ‘born' with his music skills Why perfect pitch can be trained (particularly early on) How a study of Japanese children showed they were all able to learn perfect pitch What powerful lesson we can learn from the Sakihabara study How learning Mandarin as a first language can help you as a musician or singer What is the story of Steve Falloon What our memory can be expanded much more than we ever thought How we can improve our memory What is the new science of expertise? What's the typical approach we take to practice or learning and why doesn't it get us very far? What can we learn about Malcolm Gladwell's 10,000 hour rule (business, career) that came from Anders Ericsson's work. Why doing what you already know how to do is NOT very effective practice What is the right sort of practice? What's the importance of getting outside of your comfort zone How to improve endurance running performance How to improve running speed How the right training helps the body to adapt tremendously What is purposeful practice and feedback? Why tasks require the “correct” action. Why the 10,000 hour rule needs to be corrected Why practice doesn't make perfect Why experience is not necessarily an advantage or the answer Why feedback is so important for improvement How do we harness adaptability What do the brains of London Cabbies have to do with anything? What do Maverick, Viper and Iceman (and the Top Gun Program) have to do with anything? How to refine and entrench your new skills Why it's so important to have a situation where you can make decisions and get immediate feedback How to simulate tests (such as GRE, LSAT, SAT or otherwise) Natalie Coughman Olympic Medalist – how she had a breakthrough moment in training by shifting her focus What's wrong with the concept of “will power” How do you build your motivation up? What's the importance of a teacher or a mentor? Why parents should find an activity they can do with their children Why having an expert on your side is so important Why having a parent who supports and helps the child is so important How important belief in your child is, even if they don't display talent The story of Olympic Runner Gunder hagg Why belief that you can do something is so powerful Why we should all make the assumption we can do something (until really proven otherwise) Why giving children an early experience of what training can do for their performance is so important Laslo Polgar and Clara and their experiment with their kids Stages to improve our performance First improve the motivational aspect – get motivation first What does it mean to “get serious” Why a good parent wants to start with 15-30 minutes and gives good feedback Why the worst thing you can do is to push someone well beyond the point at which they can concentrate Why you do not want to burn someone (especially a child) out. What's missing from Malcolm Gladwell's 10,000 hour rule Why the Beetles 10,000 hours is inaccurate or doesn't explain their composition. Why sleep and rest is so important – especially for experts Why napping is so important for performance Why shorter chunks are so much more valuable for training Why you're never too old to change, but why having an advisor is so helpful to help you gradually make the change What are some of the things that would motivate someone to begin making the changes Why the age ceiling for change is a myth What we can learn from violinist Paganini playing on a single string Why childhood prodigy's are not what we think What we can learn from the University of British Columbia and an experiment then did Why deliberate practice means deliberate improvement Why we should all have a goal or a project World's Reigning Expertise Expert Anders Ericsson Shares Secrets to Mastery, Expertise, and Peak Performance For Adults & Children, How to Improve at Anything, Why Talent's a Myth & Why Malcolm Gladwell's 10,000 Hour Rule Needs Updating.
