Mainframes, the early giants of the computing world, were massive and expensive, accessible only to large corporations and the government. These machines were housed in special rooms and were far from being personal or portable. Transition to Client-Server Models and Personalization: Computing started evolving with the development of client-server architecture. From the large, centralized mainframes, the industry moved to a model where computing was more distributed. Time-sharing systems allowed multiple users to access mainframe resources, leading to a gradual democratization of computing power. This shift laid the groundwork for the development of personal computers. The Era of Desktops and Handheld Devices: The next significant shift was the move to desktops and eventually to handheld devices. This evolution represented a dramatic change in how people interacted with computers, making them more personal and portable. The podcast mentions how devices like the Apple II brought computing into educational settings, revolutionizing how people could use these tools. The Impact of the Palm Pilot: The Palm Pilot is highlighted as a significant milestone in personal computing. Before the Palm, handheld devices were simply smaller versions of existing technology. The Palm Pilot, however, adopted a different approach. It did not try to replicate all functionalities of a PC. For instance, it did not support printing directly, positioning itself as a window or client to the PC, thus embracing a kind of client-server model. This decision not only made the device more practical and focused but also less expensive to support. Evolution of Form Factors: The podcast discusses the evolution of computing devices in terms of form factors. There were three main form factors: desktop (too big to carry), notebook (fit in a briefcase), and handheld (fit in a pocket or purse). Each form factor was defined by how users could physically carry and interact with these devices. It was believed that devices falling between these form factors would not be successful, although this was later proven not entirely accurate with the success of intermediate devices like tablets.

Despite how consistently and relentlessly the boys have dissed ICFs, this episode takes ICFs seriously and fairly (or as best as Jake, Steve, and Pete are capable of...).Pete's Resource(s)1. "Costs & Benefits of Insulating Concrete Forms for Residential Construction" (https://www.huduser.gov/publications/pdf/icfbenefit.pdf): A bit dated but still useful given that the PATH program (Partnership for Advancing Technology in Housing) is a decent backdrop for a fair analysis of this building technology.2. Mike McSherry is the CEO of Xealth, a platform that facilitates clinicians prescribing digital health tools to patients, tracking usage, and improving digital health recommendations. Brandon Weber is the co-founder and CEO of Nava, a benefits brokerage firm that facilitates high quality healthcare to employers. Sean Mehra is the founder and CEO of HealthTap, a virtual-first, affordable urgent and primary care clinic. Key Insights:Healthcare presents a unique ecosystem for entrepreneurs. No market is as complicated, regulated, and confusing as healthcare.Advancing Technology. Entrepreneurism in healthcareis extra challenging because healthcare often lags in adopting new technology. A hospital may have cutting edge MRIs, and yet still use fax machines. Unpredictable adoption can be due variable reimbursement plans, conflicting incentives, and government regulations. (1:39)Fixing the Bottleneck. There is a huge explosion of innovation on the supply side of healthcare, but it is not reaching buyers. Part of the bottleneck is in the benefits brokerage industry. Brandon thinks the future might already be here, it's just not evenly distributed. (3:30)Expanding the Production Possibility Frontier. In the next 5-10 years, Sean predicts that technology innovation will make supply and demand transactions more efficient, such as telehealth better connecting patients to providers, and make supply itself more efficient, like AI and algorithms to help providers. Alchemist Nation Podcast With Gualter Amarelo The Real Estate Mentor
In this episode of the Alchemist Nation Real Estate Podcast, I talk to Ben Steinberg who tells us more about what draws him to read more business and success books. He says that his advice and what drives him is that life is about continuous learning and continuous improvement and you learn a little bit when you're in school but what is done in school is learn how to learn. So those are lessons you need to take with you as you go through life that is learning something new every day, continually read and take advice from other people because there isn't only one person with all the answers. The reason why my partner and I brought Ben onto the podcast is that he is in a very unique space and I wanted to know what he does right now. He says that the new company that they have just started is called Tapa. It is a company that is looking at next-generation smart IOT and those types of things and the impact they can have on not only the commercial but also the residential real estate space. We've all seen where Amazon, Google, and others have introduced smart devices into the home, and in reality, the commercial real estate space is lagging behind in many instances of homes and a lot of that is because traditional big building automation systems are extremely expensive if you look at the Honeywells of the world, the siemens, and these multi-million dollars building automation systems. What is shifting now is that smart IOT devices are being introduced so that they can be applied in the commercial space at a much lower price point. An example of an IOT would be a smart bulb when used with Alexa can turn off the lights or change the light's colors and being able to do that in the commercial building space with similar type of devices where it isn't only light bulbs but sensors for air quality which is extremely important right now. Occupancy sensors that tell you how many people are in a particular area within a building or within a gym or conference room. So being able to connect all these devices to improve the experience and the safety of occupants of those buildings is a heart of a lot that they're trying to do right now. Ben offers 3 pieces of advice to a 20-year-old self on how to get where he is faster and happier. 1) - Do what you love to do and getting up and going to work isn't work. 2) - Continous learning is the key to success. 3) - Stay flexible, keep your eyes open, don't be afraid to pivot, keep your end goal in mind and enjoy the journey. Founding director of the Center for Microbiome Innovation and professor of pediatrics and computer science & engineering at UC San Diego, Rob Knight, discusses several aspects of his past and ongoing contributions to the field of microbiome research. He also discusses his recent focus on the COVID-19 pandemic. On this episode, you'll learn the following: Why COVID-19 is causing a very time-sensitive need for serology tests to detect antibodies What dietary factors affect the microbiome in certain viral and bacterial diseases (e.g. salmonella, influenza) Why planting eucalyptus trees outside Australia was a terrible idea, and how this relates to pathogenic bacteria and microbial communities in the human gut Rob Knight helped develop the technology that enabled the field of microbiome research to get where it is today. For example, Knight's lab has developed software for microbiome analysis, lab protocols for looking at thousands of microbiomes simultaneously, and the American Gut Project, which analyzed hundreds of thousands of microbiome samples from humans to plants to soil and oceanic environments. He explains that while the human genome is fixed, the microbiome is constantly changing. The idea is that if it can be understood what causes or leads to changes in the microbiome, then it may be possible to control the microbiome in ways that confer health advantages. When COVID-19 began spreading globally, Knight was working on a project that aimed to determine the relationship between diet and the microbiome, and how it might make people more or less susceptible to disease. He's now carrying out this research with an eye towards the current pandemic, and hoping to identify whether there are dietary or supplemental interventions that can help people combat the virus, or prevent symptoms of the virus altogether. Knight is currently trying to develop technology that will allow for a broader, simultaneous view of the entire metabolome and microbiome, and the influence of diet upon them both. “In many ways, COVID-19 is providing a stress test of what we can do right now, which is going to be very useful for pointing the way towards what we need to develop over the next few years,” says Knight. He continues by explaining the importance and challenge of being able to detect antibodies to COVID-19, as this would indicate whether someone has been exposed to the virus and is therefore likely to have immunity against it. Armed with this knowledge, people could re-enter work spaces where the risk of COVID-19 exposure is high, and do so knowing that they are unlikely to contract and fall ill from the virus. He also explains the protocol he's developing to this end, which includes COVID-19 surveillance of individuals who are at risk but currently unaffected by the virus, testing of individuals who are showing symptoms, and testing of people who have recovered from the virus. Knight dives deep into the fascinating details of this work and the continuously evolving field of microbiome research. He offers listeners with an impressive amount of information on microorganisms, the latest research on virus-host microbiome mechanisms based on animal models, how bacterial and viral infections respond to certain dietary interventions, how microbiome analysis can be predictive for the development of certain diseases, and more. In this episode, Russell Weaver, Professor of Law and Distinguished University Scholar at Louis D. Brandeis School of Law, University of Louisville, and Steve Friedland, Senior Scholar and Professor of Law at Elon University School of Law, discuss Prof. Weaver’s new book From Gutenberg to the Internet: Free Speech, Advancing Technology, and the Implications for Democracy. In From Gutenberg to the Internet, Prof. Weaver argues that the history of free expression is inextricably intertwined with advances in speech technology. However, until recently, most forms of communication were limited and controlled by so-called ''gatekeepers'' who had the power to limit or control the ability of ordinary individuals to communicate with each other. With the advent of the Internet and new forms of technology (e.g., personal computers, iPhones, etc.), people have a much greater capacity to communicate with each other. Although both governments and private entities have attempted to control discourse over the Internet, new technologies have enabled ordinary individuals to more easily communicate with each other and to participate in the political process. As a result, Weaver argues, the internet is reshaping political debate and political action for good and for bad. While enabling greater participation, it has also led to so-called “fake news” and the creation of opportunities for governments and people to meddle in the elections of other countries. Our conversation will begin with Prof. Weaver’s short introduction to his book, and will be followed by Prof. Friedland’s comments to which Prof. Weaver will respond. The two authors will then engage in a bit of a back-and-forth dialogue. As always, the Federalist Society takes no position on particular legal or public policy issues; all expressions of opinion are those of the speaker. We hope these broadcasts, like all our programming, will serve to stimulate discussion and further exchange on the topics they address.

Dennis van der Wiel, co-founder at Polariks (polariks.com/en/home), provides an overview of their groundbreaking technology that can help farmers assess their agriculture and improve their production. Polariks is all about precision agriculture and remote sensing. Polariks has developed a precision agriculture analysis method that is directly based on Hyperspectral Imaging. Their innovative technology enables better harvest planning with increased efficiency in resources, as well as early detection of diseases. And, importantly, it significantly reduces overall inspection costs. Dennis discusses the premise of his company, Polariks, that uses reflected light to determine properties. By using their technique of light they can determine whether a plant is sick or healthy, which ultimately helps farmers to make better decisions. Dennis explains how their technology can be integrated with drone and aerial tech to make the assessments regarding agriculture. From strawberries to grapes, Dennis discusses how their robotic and stationary systems-implemented technology can help improve agriculture and prevent outbreaks. He states that humans can easily detect coloring and other issues that could be indicative of a plant's ailing health, but the real test comes from looking deeper, beyond what the naked eye can reveal. He outlines the infrared analysis that can assess photosynthetic activity. The tech guru explains some of the overall goals that Polariks has in the works. He talks about the differences between outside farming and greenhouse growing. He states that greenhouses promote very homogeneous qualities and plant disease can spread quickly in a greenhouse environment. He explains that two plants side by side may both appear green and healthy, but one could already be well into a deep stage of sickness. This is why the Polariks technology is so useful, because the Polariks technology can identify problems with plant health several weeks before even the most trained human eye can. He explains the advanced principles of their technology and how it generates much more information that can be utilized to understand plant health. Dennis discusses modern farming techniques and he talks about the importance of regular monitoring over time, in regard to plant disease or plant health conditions, including the effects of drought. Finally, the farming technology expert provides some thoughts on predictive modeling and other advances that Polariks expects to promote as they develop their innovative technology and platform further.

In this podcast I’ll focus on product innovation in the Higher Education space and my guest is Ray Blackwood, Vice President of Product Management at Campus Management Corp Ray is a futurist who is passionate about technology, business intelligence and leadership. He’s in particular passionate about solving problems in higher education through technology. As he puts it on his LinkedIn profile: “I invent solutions that run colleges”. Ray received his undergraduate degrees from the University of Advancing Technology in Multimedia and Digital Animation and Production and his Master In Business Administration and Technology Management from the University of Phoenix. In my hunt for compelling stories about the value we can unlock when technology and people blend in the right way, I stumbled upon Campus Management’s new product: Occupation Insight. It’s promise: “How institutions can better align academic programs and student skills with industry needs”. This triggered me, hence I invited Ray to my podcast. We explore the big changes in the education space, where the focus is now shifting from graduation to employability as the ultimate outcome. We discuss product innovation approaches on how technology can play a meaningful role to help students stay on the optimal path to achieve their aspirations in a world where teachers are a scarce resource. Here are some of his quotes:“It's hard for students to choose the right thing or we have so much advisement to coach the student. That it can be overwhelmingI wanted to know what I was going to learn in a class more than what classes I needed to take. How cool would it be if I was a student, and I was sitting there and I just wasn't being told what to take because I needed a certain number of credit, but I could actually see what skills am I going to learn and what careers could I be interested in while I'm in school and be thinking about that."Technology is changing so rapidly. What you're going to learn in the classroom your freshman year might even be irrelevant by the time you graduate. The skill that technologists need to learn is not the technology itself, but it's how to learn. It's how to solve problems and how to think.”By listening to this interview, you will learn three things:Why the challenge is not to solve the problem at hand, but to prevent it all togetherHow you can create larger impact and circumvent scarcity by changing behavior – and one thing to do that is to inspire curiosity. What mindset you should create as a business software vendor to transform and accelerate your success. Welcome to The Shaun Tabatt Show! In this episode I speak Tom Horn about his documentary film Inhuman: The Next and Final Phase of Man is Here and his book Forbidden Gates: How Genetics, Robotics, Artificial Intelligence, Synthetic Biology, Nanotechnology, & Human Enhancement Herald The Dawn Of Techno-Dimensional Spiritual Warfare. About the Film: This film is not fiction or a mockudrama but a new investigative documentary from the internationally acclaimed team at SkyWatch TV. INHUMAN travels the globe to unveil for the first time how breakthrough advances in science, technology, and philosophy -including cybernetics, bioengineering, nanotechnology, machine intelligence, and synthetic biology - are poised to create mind-boggling game-changes to everything we have known until now about Homosapiens. As astonishing technological developments push the frontiers of humanity towards far-reaching morphological transformation (which promises in the very near future to redefine what it means to be human), an intellectual and fast-growing cultural movement known as transhumanism intends the use of these powerful new fields of science and technology as tools that will radically redesign our minds, our memories, our physiology, our offspring, and even perhaps-as Professor Joel Garreau, Lincoln Professor of Law, claims- our immortal souls. The technological, cultural, and metaphysical shift now underway unapologetically forecasts a new future dominated by a new species of unrecognizably superior humans, and applications under study now to make this dream a reality are being funded by thousands of government and private research facilities around the world. As viewers will learn, this includes rewriting human genetics, combining human and animal DNA, and interfacing our brains with strong artificial intelligence systems. As a result, new modes of perception between things visible and invisible are expected to challenge bioethics in ways that are historically, sociologically and theologically unprecedented. Without comprehending what is quickly approaching in related disciplines of research and development, vast numbers of indiviuals could soon be paralyzed by the most fantastic - and widespread - implications. The destiny of each individual - as well as the future of their families - depends on their knowledge of this new paradigm, an extraordinary time in the earth's history already being called the "Hybrid Age". FEATURING: Dr. Thomas Horn - CEO, Defender Publishing: best-selling author Dr. James J. Hughes - executive director, Institute for Ethics & Emerging Technologies; past President, World Transhumanist Association Dr. William B. Hurlbut - U.S. President's Council on Bioethics; Consulting Professor of Neuroscience, Stanford University Dr. Hugo de Garis - retired director of Artificial Brain Lab (ABL), Xiamen University, China; author, The Artilect War Dr. Natasha Vita-More - faculty, University of Advancing Technology; chairman, Humanity+; fellow, Institute for Ethics & Emerging Technologies Wesley J. Smith - senior fellow, Discovery Institute; special consultant for the Center for Bioethics and Culture Sharon Gilbert - biologist; futurist Dr. Chuck Missler - technologist; founder, Koinonia House About the Book: While Forbidden Gates includes fresh insights for traditional, tried and true methods of overcoming darkness, it also unveils for the first time how breakthrough advances in science, technology, and philosophy—including cybernetics, bio-engineering, nanotechnology, machine intelligence, synthetic biology, and transhumanism—will combine to create mind-boggling game-changes to everything you have ever known about spiritual warfare. How so? In recent years, astonishing technological developments have pushed the frontiers of humanity toward far-reaching morphological transformation that promises in the very near future to redefine what it means to be human. An international, intellectual and fast-growing cultural movement known as transhumanism intends the use of genetics, robotics, artificial intelligence and nanotechnology (GRIN technologies) as tools that will radically redesign our minds, our memories, our physiology, our offspring, and even perhaps, as Joel Garreau in his bestselling book Radical Evolution claims, our very souls. The technological, cultural, and metaphysical shift now under way unapologetically forecasts a future dominated by this new species of unrecognizably superior humans, and applications under study now to make this dream reality are being funded by thousands of government and private research facilities around the world. As the reader will learn, this includes among other things rewriting human DNA and combining men with beasts, a fact that some university studies and transhumanists believe will not only alter our bodies and souls but could ultimately open a door to contact with unseen intelligence. As a result, new modes of perception between things visible and invisible are expected to challenge the Church in ways that are historically and theologically unprecedented. Without comprehending what is quickly approaching in related disciplines of research and development, vast numbers of believers could be paralyzed by the most fantastic—and most far reaching—supernatural implications. The destiny of each individual—as well as the future of their family—will depend on their knowledge of the new paradigm and their preparedness to face it head on. Dear fellow game developers and journalists, My name is Nicolas Jackson and I am a game designer that has been studying the craft in my personal and undergraduate educational time for the past five years. For the majority of this time, I have devoted myself to completing my undergraduate education on-site in Phoenix, Arizona at the University of Advancing Technology. Since I am in my last semester (to be completed Dec. 19th 2007) and am not required to be on site, I have decided to relocate to a game industry hub (Seattle or San Francisco) as soon as possible. This relocation is to take place no later than January 1st, 2008, though I am likely to relocate earlier provided an employment commitment. Should any of you have employment opportunities or know of colleagues with opportunities that might allow me to move sooner, please let me know. I have benefited greatly from the educational opportunities afforded to me by long standing relationship with colleagues such as yourselves. And, I can only imagine how much more I would be able to benefit from relationships like these while living in one of the industries central hubs. I am happy to travel to any central industry area as required. This week, for example, I will be traveling to the Bay Area. I specialize in game system design and balance, along with audio engineering and non-liner content creation. I am most interested in simulation development, however, I would enjoy contributing to most any game project that revolves around a complex system. Thanks for your time and consideration. I look forward to many meetings in the cozy coffee shops that seem to pop up around industry hubs. Please find a copy of my resume and sample system design work attached to this message.
