On May 9, 2023, Jay Nordlinger delivered a talk titled “Adventures in Journalism” at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Missouri. During the talk, Nordlinger surveys today's media landscape with what has become frequent dismay. “We've never had so much journalism and so many outlets, which is great,” the National Review senior editor says. “But politics and journalism have merged, and … I've seen a lot of journalists begin to act like politicians with political calculations. That's crippling to a writer.” “You've got to be free at the keyboard,” he says, “to pursue the truth as you find it.” Nordlinger, who lives in New York, writes the column “Impromptus” for NationalReview.com and is a book fellow of the National Review Institute. He's the author of two books: Peace, They Say: A History of the Nobel Peace Prize, the Most Famous and Controversial Prize in the World and Children of Monsters: An Inquiry into the Sons and Daughters of Dictators. Selections of his work have been republished in two anthologies. He also is a music critic for The New Criterion and the host of two podcasts, Q&A and Music for a While. The event was co-presented by the Show-Me Institute, National Review Institute, the John W. Hammond Institute for Free Enterprise, and Show-Me Opportunity

TCU (Texas Christian University) will be playing for the college football national championship against defending champions Georgia in Los Angeles on Monday, Jan.9. Coming into the season, the Horned Frogs were not considered serious contenders for their conference (Big 12) title much less for the national championship. As unlikely as TCU's meteoric rise to the championship game is, the story of one its star players, Darnestown native Johnny Hodges' story is arguably more remarkable. Hodges took a very non-traditional route to get to this point. The three-sport star at Quince Orchard received only two scholarship offers to play football. He ended up at Navy - playing lacrosse. And now, he's 60 minutes of football away from being a college football national champion. Hodges spoke to MyMCM Director of Content Joe Yasharoff in the latest episode of the MoCo's Most Famous podcast about his amazing journey.
The Quince Orchard High School football team completed their second straight undefeated season last Thursday beating CH Flowers 32-7 in the Maryland 4A state championship game. After 255 episodes we're just surprised as you that we haven't covered this one yet! But here we are 2022 , the year of our Lord, covering what is probably the MOST FAMOUS "true crime" legend of all time....JACK THE RIPPER. I'd say probably the most famous serial killer as well. Jack's ripping spree spanned between August - November of 1888 in the East End neighborhood of London known as "White Chapel". All of Jack's victims were women of the same ilk. Alcoholic Prostitutes who no longer had substantial ties to their families. There's some debate that he may have begun killing earlier in the year as there were 11 violent murders against women that spanned from April of 1888-February of 1889. These murders were conveniently labeled as the "White Chapel Murders" However, there are 5 core murders that most experts agree were definitely his , the "Canonical 5". We'll cover these 5 murders as well as discuss some POSSIBLE suspects. Not gonna lie, WE LEFT A LOT OF INFORMATION out as there is literally thousands of episodes worth of material here on this subject. Hootie & the Blowfish was one of the most popular rock bands in the world in the 1990's. Fronted by Darius Rucker, the band had a string of hits including Only Wanna Be With You and Hold My Hand and won two Grammys. Rucker met guitarists Mark Bryan and Dean Felber - two buddies from Seneca Valley High School - at a dorm at the University of South Carolina in the mid-80's where the three went to school. They hit it off right away, formed a band and the rest was history. All have gone their separate ways professionally although the band still performs shows together on occasion. Bryan, born in Silver Spring and now living in South Carolina, has released a new solo album called Midlife Priceless. He performed songs from that album plus old hits from Hootie at a show at Ram's Head Tavern in Annapolis in September. Bryan talked to Joe Yasharoff recently about the new album, the old days and the rush he still gets performing in the latest episode of MoCo's Most Famous podcast. Is the MOST FAMOUS verse in the Bible also the MOST FAMOUS verse IN MY SOUL? Maybe it should be. I probably should think about its' value in general, and especially its' value to me and my soul. With that in mind, let's soberly consider it.For God: It starts with Him; is sourced in Him; is initiated with Him. Without this, we'd all be lost. This is the foundation the rest of this great wonder rests on.So Loved: God has lots of great qualities. Hesed, faithfulness, justice, mercy. Sometimes I even get a shine about God's wrath on my holiest of days. I am also thinking of His creativity, correction and forgiveness. But today, He majors this whole rescue plan on LOVE. I drew a picture in my head and in my Bible. An arrow zooming out of the heart of God.The World: Yup, that means all the enemies of God. Which is everybody.Gave His only Son: He uses family language here to help us understand how much this hurt. We glimpse at it when some thing or some one messes with my children or grandchildren. When God gives His only Son, to the tribes of the world, out of love, in an initiation by Him to do something for us, WE PROBABLY SHOULD PAY ATTENTION. Wonder. Consider. Admire. And then what? What should I DO? Listen 7 minutes and find out.

This episode is all about the Icelandic geothermal bathing culture in Iceland. Many of you might be aware that Icelanders love to soak in a hot tub no matter the weather. However, you might not be aware of some of the history, modern day culture and etiquette involved with this tradition. Before I jumped into it, I’m excited to announce that this episode is sponsored by the new Sky Lagoon geothermal spa in Reykjavík. I have to point out that I only like to promote places or things that I have personally gone to or used and can vouch for the experience. I will share some insight a little later in the episode about the Sky Lagoon because I was blown away by this new geothermal spa. A Little History About Icelander's Geothermal Bathing Culture Bathing in a geothermal pool in Iceland is a national pastime, and the origins of this activity dates back to the settlement times. When farmers from Norway came to Iceland, they found that there was an abundance of hot water coming out of the earth in different areas of the country. Washing clothes and soaking in natural Icelandic geothermal pools were two of the most common uses. The heat and steam from the geothermal water were also used to make delicious Icelandic bread called rúgbrauð.Iceland’s harsh weather takes a toll on the skin and those with skin conditions found that soaking in the warm water seemed to alleviate some symptoms. Because the water from geothermal sources is often rich with minerals, it can provide healing properties for those that immerse in it. Iceland’s Most Famous & Historical Man Made Geothermal Bathing Pool Snorri Sturluson, a revered Icelandic historian, poet and politician, had a man made geothermal bathing pool in Reykholt back in the 13th century. It is aptly named Snorralaug, which translates to Snorri’s pool and is fed hot water by the nearby hot spring Skrifla.. What’s even more interesting is that Snorri had a tunnel built that went from his house straight to the pool so he could be sheltered to and from his beloved geothermal bathing pool. I visited this location in the summer of 2020 and the pool is beautiful. Unfortunately, it’s not possible to bathe in it today because the hot water that fills the pool can sometimes be scolding hot. While Snorralaug was once thought to be used only by Snorri, it appears that this pool was mentioned in the Landnáma, or book of settlement, back in the 10th century. Of course, it was not called Snorralaug back then but the pool in the book of settlements was in the same location. Modern Day Icelandic Bathing Culture While it is still possible and quite fun to bathe in natural geothermal hot springs out in Icelandic nature, the majority of Icelanders opt for local pools and spas. These facilities provide a comfortable place to change, lockers to store your things securely, showers to clean off, and a relaxing place to gather. Many of these places still use geothermal energy but it’s a major upgrade from what their ancestors used.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7LceJtnzj_0&t=12s Sky Lagoon Iceland - Incorporating Icelandic Geothermal Bathing Culture & the Modern Spa Experience And this is what brings me to talk more about our sponsor for this episode, which is the new gorgeous Sky Lagoon in Reykjavík. I had the amazing opportunity to check out the Sky Lagoon the weekend it opened. If I recall correctly, it opened on Friday, April 30th and we went on Sunday, May 2nd. What’s nice is that it is only about a 10 minute drive from the downtown area. This new geothermal spa in Iceland is unique because they have incorporated Icelandic culture and history into the experience.I was blown away by how beautiful the facilities are and how thoughtful the architects were when they designed the place. For starters, the outside of the building was made using Icelandic turf, which is essentially dirt and grass. That is how Icelanders made their homes for centuries after...
The much talked-about and written-about Brood X cicadas have started to arrive, showing up on trees and in backyards. Millions more are expected to emerge from their 17-year long slumber in the coming days. Central Maryland is expected to be the epicenter of the madness meaning that Montgomery County could be ground zero for cicadas. MyMCM wanted to get the best information on cicadas for County residents – some who are eagerly awaiting the insect invasion and others who can’t bear the thought of it – so we sought the counsel of one of the country’s foremost experts on cicadas, Dr. Michael J. Raupp, an entomologist at the University of Maryland. Raupp has been studying the mysterious creatures for decades and has appeared on Good Morning America, The Tonight Show, and CNN to share his knowledge – and love – of cicadas. Raupp joined host Joe Yasharoff for the latest episode of MoCo’s Most Famous. Available now on MyMCMedia, Overcast, Apple Podcasts, RadioPublic, Spotify, Stitcher, Facebook, Pocketcasts, and Twitter. Lewis Black is that angry, ranting comedian you've seen in several stand-ups specials and who essentially played himself as the voice of Anger in the Pixar animated, Oscar-winning film Inside Out in 2015. Black grew up in a funny household in Silver Spring attending Springbrook High School in the 60's. He won a Grammy for best comedy album in 2007 and is still going strong at the age of 72 although not doing any shows - live or virtual - during the pandemic. On the latest episode of MoCo's Most Famous, MyMCM's Joe Yasharoff talked to Black on the eve of an MPCS event he was invited to take part in discussing careers for middle schoolers and high schoolers. Take Me Home, Country Roads was a big hit for Rock and Roll Hall of Famer John Denver in 1971, peaking at number two on the Billboard charts. It is considered Denver's signature song and became one of West Virginia's official state songs in 2014 but the song has strong Montgomery County roots. Two of the song's co-writers - Bill Danoff and Taffy Nivert who were married at the time - lived in Montgomery County for years. The song's genesis can be traced back to a car ride in 1970 on a very rural at the time Clopper Road with Danoff and Nivert on their way to a family reunion in Gaithersburg singing and strumming along the way. Many versions of what happened after that car ride have been told for years including one that claims the song's original title was Take Me Home, Clopper Road. MyMCM wanted to get the real story so we tracked down Nivert in Florida - where she has lived for the last several years - to set the record straight in the latest edition of MoCo's Most Famous with Joe Yasharoff. Five years ago, Jake Funk helped lead Damascus High School to an undefeated 14-0 record and the 3A Maryland state title scoring seven touchdowns in the championship game against Dundalk. Now he's a senior running back at the University of Maryland. Injuries have ended his last two seasons and it looked like he would miss his senior season when the Big Ten announced in August that they had postponed the 2020 season due to safety concerns over COVID-19. But last week, the conference reversed its decision announcing an eight-game schedule for all 14 schools beginning in late October. Funk, a three-time academic all Big Ten, is finally healthy and says he's ready to go for Maryland's season opener against Northwestern on October 24. Mark Ein might as well be called DC’s Mr. Tennis. He made his name as an investor, entrepreneur, and philanthropist in Washington D.C. but most people know him as the owner of the Washington Kastles, a professional team that won six championships (including five in a row) in World Team Tennis. He is passionate about the game having grown up in Chevy Chase where he captained the tennis team at Bethesda Chevy Chase High School. Before that, he was a ball boy at the Citi Open and – in a Hollywood script-worthy turn of events – he now owns the tournament that has been played at the courts located 16th and Kennedy for 50 years. Ein and his team have made some creative changes to the fan experience for this year’s Citi Open. He talked about the changes, the mania over 15-year old sensation Coco Gauff and much more in the latest episode of MoCo’s Most Famous. #MoCosMostFamous Available Now on MyMCMedia, Overcast, Apple Podcasts, RadioPublic, Spotify, Stitcher, Facebook, Pocketcasts and Twitter.
