In this special Saga Brief, we visit historic Reykholt, once home to Snorri Sturluson, for a fascinating conversation with Sigrún Guttormsdóttir Þormar, department manager at Snorrastofa. This interview is the second installment in our four-part series recorded on-site during our recent trip to Iceland. Sigrún generously met with us on a Saturday to talk about Snorri's life, legacy, and the important work being done at Snorrastofa to continue the long tradition of learning at Reykholt on the site. Along the way, she shared insights into Snorri's role as a chieftain, writer, and political figure in 13th-century Iceland, offering a more nuanced portrait of the man we often call “infamous.” If you're planning a trip to Iceland, we can't recommend a stop in Reykholt highly enough. In addition to its rich history, the Snorrastofa cultural and medieval studies center offers an engaging exhibition on Snorri's life, an inviting research library, and an exceptional gift shop. For more about Snorrastofa, including visitor info, exhibitions, and ongoing research, visit: https://snorrastofa.is Enjoy the episode and let us know what you think about Snorri's legacy after hearing from someone who engages with it every day.

Snorri Sturluson, the great Icelandic poet and historian and lawspeaker of the Althing, got involved in Norwegian/Icelandic politics, and it ended very badly. For him, for one thing, as the king of Norway arranged for 70 men to stab Snorri in his basement, and for Iceland, which devolved into chieftain battles and eventually unified with Norway and the Norwegian king became the boss of everything. The Althing still exists, though, and Iceland is independent now, and Snorri is one of the most influential poets of the early middle ages. We explain all this. Anne still wonders why you need 70 people to stab somebody in his basement, and Michelle is shocked, shocked, I tell you, that there isn't any historical fiction about all this, though she is slightly mollified by the fact that there is now a Snorri ap, for Android and IOS. Well, then.

This episode is all about the Icelandic geothermal bathing culture in Iceland. Many of you might be aware that Icelanders love to soak in a hot tub no matter the weather. However, you might not be aware of some of the history, modern day culture and etiquette involved with this tradition. Before I jumped into it, I’m excited to announce that this episode is sponsored by the new Sky Lagoon geothermal spa in Reykjavík. I have to point out that I only like to promote places or things that I have personally gone to or used and can vouch for the experience. I will share some insight a little later in the episode about the Sky Lagoon because I was blown away by this new geothermal spa. A Little History About Icelander's Geothermal Bathing Culture Bathing in a geothermal pool in Iceland is a national pastime, and the origins of this activity dates back to the settlement times. When farmers from Norway came to Iceland, they found that there was an abundance of hot water coming out of the earth in different areas of the country. Washing clothes and soaking in natural Icelandic geothermal pools were two of the most common uses. The heat and steam from the geothermal water were also used to make delicious Icelandic bread called rúgbrauð.Iceland’s harsh weather takes a toll on the skin and those with skin conditions found that soaking in the warm water seemed to alleviate some symptoms. Because the water from geothermal sources is often rich with minerals, it can provide healing properties for those that immerse in it. Iceland’s Most Famous & Historical Man Made Geothermal Bathing Pool Snorri Sturluson, a revered Icelandic historian, poet and politician, had a man made geothermal bathing pool in Reykholt back in the 13th century. It is aptly named Snorralaug, which translates to Snorri’s pool and is fed hot water by the nearby hot spring Skrifla.. What’s even more interesting is that Snorri had a tunnel built that went from his house straight to the pool so he could be sheltered to and from his beloved geothermal bathing pool. I visited this location in the summer of 2020 and the pool is beautiful. Unfortunately, it’s not possible to bathe in it today because the hot water that fills the pool can sometimes be scolding hot. While Snorralaug was once thought to be used only by Snorri, it appears that this pool was mentioned in the Landnáma, or book of settlement, back in the 10th century. Of course, it was not called Snorralaug back then but the pool in the book of settlements was in the same location. Modern Day Icelandic Bathing Culture While it is still possible and quite fun to bathe in natural geothermal hot springs out in Icelandic nature, the majority of Icelanders opt for local pools and spas. These facilities provide a comfortable place to change, lockers to store your things securely, showers to clean off, and a relaxing place to gather. Many of these places still use geothermal energy but it’s a major upgrade from what their ancestors used.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7LceJtnzj_0&t=12s Sky Lagoon Iceland - Incorporating Icelandic Geothermal Bathing Culture & the Modern Spa Experience And this is what brings me to talk more about our sponsor for this episode, which is the new gorgeous Sky Lagoon in Reykjavík. I had the amazing opportunity to check out the Sky Lagoon the weekend it opened. If I recall correctly, it opened on Friday, April 30th and we went on Sunday, May 2nd. What’s nice is that it is only about a 10 minute drive from the downtown area. This new geothermal spa in Iceland is unique because they have incorporated Icelandic culture and history into the experience.I was blown away by how beautiful the facilities are and how thoughtful the architects were when they designed the place. For starters, the outside of the building was made using Icelandic turf, which is essentially dirt and grass. That is how Icelanders made their homes for centuries after...

The train's pulling into the station and you've got a ticket, because this week we're talking all about hype. Why do we get irrationally excited about games we know nothing about? How much should we listen to our overly excited inner selves? So many contests! If you haven't yet, check out the BGA Patreon (patreon.com/bga). We've unlocked weekly game giveaways that you're automatically entered into as a backer of the show. We've also launched the annual Board Game Bracket contest, now live on our website (http://boardgamersanonymous.com/2019-board-game-bracket-contest/). For the show this week, we kick things off with our question of the week, asking the listeners "What's your favorite non-playing part of your board game collection (e.g. punching, sorting, painting, etc.)?" For acquisition disorders, Anthony looks at the new expansion for Teotihuacan, Late Classical Period, and Chris looks at the expansion for Feudum, Rudders and Ramparts. At the table, Anthony digs into Reykholt, the lighter new game from Uwe Rosenberg via Renegade Games, and Chris looks at CVliziations, the civ-themed take on a show-favorite, CV. Finally, for our feature, we're looking at six games you might like if you're a big fan of Imperial Settlers. Question of the Week: 6:18 Acquisition Disorders: 10:02 Reykholt Review: 16:23 CVlizations Review: 22:57 If You Like Imperial Settlers, Try: 28:14 If you haven’t yet, be sure to connect with us on Facebook (www.facebook.com/boardgamersanonymous), Twitter (http://twitter.com/bgapodcast), and on our website (www.boardgamersanonymous.com). The Peter Principle observes that people tend to get promoted to their level of incompetence. Namely if someone does a job well, they'll be promoted, until such time as they cease doing a job well and persist at that level of ineptitude. We mention this not because it accurately describes the arc of Mark's life both professionally and personally--which, let's face it, it does--but rather because we have decided to promote the AYURIS from off-hand remark into Full Fledged Segment (AYURIS, FFS [tm]). Stephanie and Greg are pretty negative in this one, you may not want to listen. Ok, ok, if you're going to listen let's give you a rough idea of what you're in for. Our first game review is Reykholt (7:39), next, Planet (11:30), then The Quacks of Quedlinburg (14:41) and lastly Pirate Tricks (18:46). We then get super cranky about hype in relation to board games and board game media (21:58) and lastly we tackle a listener question in Stephanie's book segment (41:21). Listen, and then get off our lawn!
Was haben isländische Tomatenbauern, norwegische Fischereibetreiber und bayrische Glasbläser gemeinsam? Wahrscheinlich gar nichts.

Matt and Quinns are joined in this episode by Microsoft Powerpoint(!) to discuss their experiences with Heaven & Ale, Reykholt, Captains of the Gulf, Trapwords and Between Two Castles of Mad King Ludwig. In a rare mailbag double-bagger, the pair then field two questions, one about the phrase "The Teach", the other about theoretical business ventures for SU&SD. Quinns wants to open a new telephone hotline and Matt wants funding for... well, it's not exactly clear?

Recorded in War Room Studios - Albuquerque, NM : 10/24/18 This episode brought to you by Power to the Meeple, Arcane Wonders & Meeple Realty. Year in and Year out the "Horror in the War Room" is one of our very favorite episodes to plan and produce and our 4th annual installment is no different. Tune in and hear our reenactment listener Jaci Bell's story "A Proper End - An Eldritch Tale". No Halloween special would be complete with Dracul and Igor - so we sent Cat on location to interview them. We flash back to previous Halloween episodes and discuss Fury of Dracula, Mythos Tales & Gates of Loyang (can anyone say Uwe-Tober?!?). It's that time, and we roll the dice and lay out the games that have caught our attention in this year's Essen preview show. First we cover 10 games nominated by our guild using a complex and patented formula. Then we each take a shot at adding five games of our own discovery. Throw in some expansion discussion, and you have a show of partially educated guessing that is sure to wow even the most cynical gamer. I visit the Snorrastofa, a research and cultural center at Reykholt, the farm in southwestern Iceland where the great medieval Icelandic historian and writer Snorri Sturluson built his home, a church, and later a small fortress. Snorrastofa Project Manager Sigrun Guttomsdóttir Þormar and I talk about Snorri's dramatic life, his legacy, and his hot tub, which is still in perfect working condition 800 years after its construction. The music in this episode is by the Iceland/German band Árstíðir lífsins, who take their inspiration from the Old Norse literature. ________ Museums in Strange Places is a podcast about Icelandic museums and museum culture. Subscribe to Museums in Strange Places and you can expect fascinating conversations with Icelandic museum professionals, world class exhibitions, private museums in gas stations, an introduction to Icelanders and their knack for storytelling, and a unique window into the inner workings of museums on this strange but wonderful little island. Get bonus material from each episode (photos, further reading, links) at hhethmon.com. Use the hashtag #MuseumsinStrangePlaces on social media. The podcast is hosted by Hannah Hethmon, an American Fulbright Fellow living in Reykjavík. You can find her on Twitter and Instagram @hannah_rfh or on the web at hhethmon.com. Hannah has a BA in English Literature from the University of Maryland, College Park and an MA from the University of Iceland in Medieval Icelandic Studies. After completing her MA, she spent two years as the Marketing Coordinator for the American Association for State and Local History, a Nashville-based national nonprofit dedicated to serving history museums, historical societies, and other public history institutions.
Sendt første gang i 2008.
Programmet sendt første gang i oktober 2008
