This week's episode is a re-run of a conversation with Dr. Kelly Starrett (also known as K-Starr in the Crossfit world) from 4 years ago. Kelly is a renowned expert in strength and mobility. He is a coach, physical therapist, two-time New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestselling author, speaker, and the co-founder of The Ready State, home to the world's most comprehensive collection of guided movement, mechanics, and mobility instructional videos. This is a great time of year to start new habits and if I was to recommend one addition to your daily routine it would be mobility. In our conversation, we cover a wide range of topics, including: The definition of mobility The importance of identifying what works and rejecting what doesn't The concept of ‘position transfer exercise' as an alternative term for mobility How to create a durable body for optimal ‘play' in everyday life Recommendations for daily mobility practices Using social media as an educational tool The significance of good mobility in controlling movement rather than compensating The debate around foam rolling: to roll or not to roll? Embracing ‘adventure fitness' over traditional racing Join us for an insightful discussion that will elevate your understanding of mobility and fitness! Kia ora e te whānau. Eugene and Matt spoke to New York Times Best Selling Author Christopher McDougall, and it ruled. Far from a traditional conversation, this one veered all over the map, with McDougall just having returned from a run to the hardware store for things to pack up his house pending his imminent move to Hawaii. We discuss the impetus for writing the follow-up to Born to Run with coach Eric Orton. In a fever Matt offers violence, Christopher talked about drinking one's own urine, and Eugene put it out there that whilst not everyone might, he certainly always has a little bit of mule inside him*. There is a cameo from Lola, Matt's 15-year-old daughter, and a general trove of amazing conversation about movement, the search for authenticity, and just the remarkable fact that we were all coping in such whacky times from the man who brought us Born to Run, Natural Born Heroes, and Running With Sherman. This conversation is at once funny, disarming, poignant, and surreal. Also this week on the show we give away ONE of our Tarawera entries, encourage you all to submit a Greatest Run Ever to win ANOTHER entry and run down the news, races, and details about our 200th episode live show. What it was like for Jesse, the pros and cons, to grow up in a household where his parents were more hands-off and gave him lots of personal space. How we choose to see different events and perceive them in different ways. His parent's deep involvement with helping refugees from Central America as his father become Director of a halfway house. Jesse's experience witnessing his father being arrested and being found guilty in court for helping these refugees who were illegal aliens when he was 10 years old and how that pushed him to grow up instantly. The story that Jesse could have created for himself that his father loved other people more than he loved his family and so he left them but Jesse knew that wouldn't be helpful for him. Why many parents are limited in creativity and courage plus how to increase your levels in both. The importance of allowing children to explore different experiences to fully embrace their humanity. Power Quotes From The Show Mind Vitamins & Non-Resistant Flow “Time behaves very differently when you're operating in a vacuum of judgment. When you are completely free of the past and free of the future, and you are filling this time in space with who and what you actually are…and being fully, really powerfully yourself. It is beyond cathartic and a restoration of your child-like qualities of being timeless." - Jesse Elder | The Art of Resiliency Achieving Functional Mastery "I'm hungry and I'll do whatever it takes to be around other people that I can learn from. In that way, my ego is extremely involved too. I'm not competitive with anybody and I don't see how it can be a useful frame. After a while you absorb so much information, you're constantly testing, and then before you know it you have a mastery that might have taken ten years of trial and error if you hadn't compressed it in a short amount of time. Calendars are irrelevant to success; all achievement is really an emotional journey of normalization." - Jesse Elder How to be in Alignment with Universal Frequency "While we're in this physical experience, we're here to observe and create. We create by feeling our emotions as they constantly act as a beacon of attraction, but also a way to give feedback. When we feel good, happy, and have that powerful sense of well-being - then we're in alignment with the universal frequency. When we don't feel good because of our perception or because of other people's influence that pulls our perception, it's just a sign that we've gotten away from who we really are." - Jesse Elder Links From Today's Show Jesse Podcast The Upgraded Life David R. In today's show, I’m joined by a man who helps people to run faster, and he calls himself a movement coach. Shane Benzie has a coaching philosophy that leads him to take an anthropological view of a runner. Shane believes that if we move like a human is designed to move, that will make us a good athlete. To maximise our potential we must take that human movement and turn it into human performance. His coaching is designed to create an intelligent runner that has the correct perception of their movement. It encourages them to see changes in gait as a software change rather than teaching the physical body new tricks. This is a great conversation that looks at running improvement from a completely different perspective and we chat about a diverse range of topics including: How everyday movement patterns influence your running style The benefits of using a stand-up desk Counting strides and why it leads to an imbalance in run technique The role of the fascia The ’tensegrity model’ and the ’sea of tension’ Understanding what good movement looks and feels like What is the optimal running cadence? Foot strike and the ’tripod landing' Running drills and why they are not necessarily a good thing Shane’s 4 tips for better running To find out more about Shane please visit his website, RunningReborn.com You can also find him on the usual social media channels: Facebook - RunningReborn Instagram - Shane.benzie Twitter - @runningreborn Here are some of the links we discussed: We talked about Shane’s book “The Lost art of Running” And also about this book “Natural Born Heroes”, which references the involvement of fascia in movement generally, and running specifically. The topic of this podcast is a form of resilience: heroism. Christopher McDougall, the author of Natural Born Heroes, describes heroism as a skill that can be practiced, rather than a virtue or personality trait. My guest is Dr. Alan Ogle, an operational Air Force psychologist and firefighter who, among many accomplishments during his military career, developed an alcohol prevention program that became the model for use across Air Force and DoD. He also implemented the 360 multi-dimensional assessment for Military Training Instructors in BMT. In this episode, we discuss heroes and heroism in the military, courage in every day life, compassion as the driving force behind heroism, embedded mental health teams, and applying 360 multidimensional assessments when selecting those to positions of power, including political leaders.

We love the natural born hero. Superman didn't learn to be superman. He didn't practice being superman. He was born superman. Superman has done more harm to us than any villain ever could. We know superman isn't real, but we still hold on to the natural born idea. We love to pick the winning horse early, to spot a tendency and extrapolate into the future. The trouble with our natural born idea is that it's wrong. The research is plentiful, but we still hold on to an old idea. I have a humorous story to introduce the possibility we've got it wrong. My wife and I adopted our children. Our oldest is Native American. When she was about 8, she went to a summer camp. One of the events at camp was archery. She didn't tell anyone, but she knew she would be a natural at archery. She was Native American after all, and everyone knows Native Americans are naturally great with the bow and arrow. She walked up to the line with all the confidence of an Olympic medalist. You might have guessed the outcome. She had never shot an arrow before. I'm not even sure she had ever held a bow. The arrow went wildly to the right and into the grass. She learned the hard way that morning that you have to practice, even if you are a Native American. What about a genius? A genius is the same idea as a natural born hero. Even I believe in some variation. Just like some people are tall and others aren't, I do think some people have a greater capacity than others, but the range is much narrower than I had previously thought. We can be fooled into thinking someone is a genius. We see years of concentrated effort, and we want to believe they were born that way. What about a natural born salesperson? Again, it doesn't exist. We learn to be a salesperson. Some people might learn early. My Mom sold Mary Kay cosmetics my entire childhood. She was listening to Zig Ziglar talk about selling as long as I can remember. I'm sure my early education combined with my need to make money played a much larger role than any natural born talent. Maybe you've seen the scene from the movie, Wolf of Wall Street, where the main character asks, “Sell me this pen?” It's a famous and odd test of selling ability. Can you sell the pen? What I want to take away from the scene isn't how to sell a pen. What I want to show in the scene is how to sell a pen must be taught and can be taught. Everyone can sell a pen once you are shown how to sell a pen. You can get better with practice. Someone who's already been selling might not know the pen example. After being shown once, they'll quickly be an expert. You might be looking in and see this as proof of natural born talent. All the expert did was transfer prior knowledge and skill to the pen test. The expert didn't need to practice as much because they didn't require as much new learning. The framework was already in place. I'm writing this is to give you hope. Most of us didn't focus on one topic or skill long enough to reach any special ability or success. We might give up and believe we aren't smart enough. Don't confuse Hollywood scripts for the real world. In the real world, there's always hope. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/greg-dyche/support

Rebecca Lewis joins us to discuss her journey through life from non-athlete to conventional athlete to coach and practitioner of natural human movement. We discuss:-her background-how she went from being a practitioner of yoga to being a teacher of yoga to being disillusioned with yoga-her experience and expertise with running-how MovNat and natural movement changed everything-principles of good movement-principles of good training-how some aspects of our modern lifestyle affect us, and what those aspects are-what we can do to move well and enjoy itAbout Rebecca: "Rebecca is an efficient movement and running coach, living and working in the incredible natural setting of the UNESCO World Heritage, Tramuntana Mountains, Mallorca, Spain. "I love the freedom of running and moving with confidence and ease in nature. And my passion is to introduce others to feel confident and competent within a natural environment. Seeing it as a natural, outdoor playground, to interact with and enjoy, rather than be fearful of."By optimising our human movement potential, we can resolve pain, prevent injury and improve performance, in whatever we do. If we can move well, we feel better and enjoy our body’s more."One of my main focal points is to help others understand the role of the feet as integral to whole body movement. Through rewilding the sensory organ, that is our feet, we have more opportunity to sense and read the environment we are moving through. Enabling us to move more efficiently and effectively with confidence."We sense the world through our senses, so why dumb down your first point of contact with the earth by wearing constrictive, rigid and cushioned footwear. We miss so much by this disconnection. "I believe, if we take time to understand our biological needs, move in alignment with our physiology, we are on the road to being a happier, healthier and more capable human being."Contact Rebecca: https://www.barefootmallorca.com/contactContact Michael:1. ccerppodcast@aol.com2. http://www.goldams.com 3. https://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-gold-2883921/ 4. https://www.facebook.com/groups/1152144714995033/Join us at CCERP on Facebook! https://www.facebook.com/groups/1152144714995033/Show notes:1. Pete and Tyler chat with Chris McDougall about his new book, Running with Sherman, burro racing in Leadville Colorado and his iconic book, Born to Run. Chris, on the genesis of Born to Run; “I was just trying to huff out a few miles and do the basic minimum physical requirement to not be morbidly obese, that was my goal in life, and I just kept getting injured all the time. I think that’s the reason Born to Run really resonated with people, was because I think it came at them from a perspective that a lot of people shared. We’re just trying to work out a little bit, why is so hard? Why is so unpleasant? Why do I have to force myself to do it? And that, to me, was the starting point of Born to Run”. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/adventureaudio/support

The other day I found myself re-reading our Notes on Christopher McDougall’s great book Natural Born Heroes. Although we’ve talked (many times) about the fact that the ancient word for hero literally meant “protector,” I realized that (somehow!) I’ve never shared McDougall’s brilliant wisdom that catalyzed my emphasis on the whole idea of all of us becoming modern heroes. So… Let’s take a quick look at how McDougall so wisely puts it. He tells us: “And what Plutarch taught them is this: Heroes care. True heroism, as the ancients understood, isn’t about strength, or boldness, or even courage. It’s about compassion. When the Greeks created the heroic ideal, they didn’t choose a word that mean ‘Dies Trying’ or ‘Massacres Bad Guy.’ They went with hērōs—‘protector.’ Heroes aren’t perfect; with a god as one parent and a mortal as the other, they’re perpetually teetering between two destinies. What tips them toward greatness is a sidekick, a human connection who helps turn the spigot on the power of compassion. Empathy, the Greeks believed, was a source of strength, not softness; the more you recognized yourself in others and connected with their distress, the more endurance, wisdom, cunning, and determination you could tap into.” That’s Today’s +1. Heroes care. It’s that simple. And… As aspiring modern heroes, we demonstrate that love and compassion by building the strength for two. So… For whom do YOU aspire to have strength? And… How will you build just a little more strength Today? Plus… How can you use the strength you have in service to the world just a little more Today? Modern Hērōs unite!! Let’s do this.

Chris McDougall is the author of the bestselling books “Born to Run” and “Natural Born Heroes.” His new book, “Running with Sherman,” documents the adventure of his family's adoption of a donkey named Sherman who had been neglected by an animal hoarder. Their solution to getting Sherman happy and healthy was to give him a purpose and teach him how to burro race. It's a must-read if you like animals or just want to hear an amazing story about running with donkeys, human performance, and so much m

This week we dive into the trend of natural movement and the ancient Greek secrets of fitness (hey, who invented the Olympics?). The discussion is fueled by a best-selling book, "Natural Born Heroes", that details how the naturally athletic (and very ballsy) natives of the Greek island of Crete, were able to kidnap a Nazi general and totally f*&k up Hitler’s plans to defeat Russia! So this week it's a little history, a lot of fascinating ancient fitness theories and, as usual, some sophomoric humor!!! Please follow the show for future interviews like this one. Chris McDougall is the world wide best selling Author of Born to Run and Natural Born Heroes. Two books that have revolutionised the running world and bought to the fore the discussions around human endurance, the history of running, the ability of people to run incredible distances and the barefoot running revolution. In this fireside chat we discuss how he writes his incredibly entertaining and intricately woven stories despite have ADHD. How he manages to sit still long enough to get anything down and what impact the stories he has shared have had on millions of readers around the world. Trained as a foreign correspondent for the Associated Press, Christopher McDougall covered wars in Rwanda and Angola before writing his international bestseller, Born to Run. His fascination with the limits of human potential led him to create the Outside magazine web series, “Art of the Hero.” Born to Run is currently being made into a feature film starring Matthew McConaughey. The book - "Born to Run" was about a Hidden Tribe of superathletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen. It was a 2009 best-selling ethnography. The book has sold over three million copies. Natural Born Heroes: Chris in this book travels to the Mediterranean, where he discovers that the secrets of ancient Greek heroes are still alive and well on the island of Crete, and ready to be unleashed in the muscles and minds of casual athletes and aspiring heroes everywhere. After running an ultramarathon through the Copper Canyons of Mexico, Christopher McDougall finds his next great adventure on the razor-sharp mountains of Crete, where a band of Resistance fighters in World War II plotted the daring abduction of a German general from the heart of the Nazi occupation. How did a penniless artist, a young shepherd, and a playboy poet believe they could carry out such a remarkable feat of strength and endurance, smuggling the general past thousands of Nazi pursuers, with little more than their own wits and courage to guide them? McDougall makes his way to the island to find the answer and retrace their steps, experiencing firsthand the extreme physical challenges the Resistance fighters and their local allies faced. On Crete, the birthplace of the classical Greek heroism that spawned the likes of Herakles and Odysseus, McDougall discovers the tools of the hero—natural movement, extraordinary endurance, and efficient nutrition. All of these skills, McDougall learns, are still practiced in far-flung pockets throughout the world today. Chris’s Wild Idea: To explore the limits of human potential, and to write amazing stories about it. Chris McDougall is the author of the bestselling books, Born to Run and Natural Born Heroes. His first book spawned the barefoot running movement and altered the running shoe industry forever. It’s also being made into a movie starring Matthew McConaughey. Natural Born Heroes dives into the history of how every-day citizens and amazing athletes on the island of Crete withstood the German forces during World War II. This is the kind of thing he loves: finding amazing stories about less-known athletes achieving amazing feats, and digging in to learn about their strategies, training, diets, and more, then sharing them with readers. In 2011, I traded Chris surf lessons for barefoot running lessons. Since then, Chris has become not only a great writing mentor, but also a friend. On this episode, we talked about his life since the success of his books, what techniques he learned while researching them (including movement based exercises used by the Cretans), why he may discourage you from becoming a writer, and why donkeys (yes donkeys) make great running partners. Chris is an amazing storyteller and I think that really comes through in this podcast. Listen to this episode if: You’ve read Born to Run or Natural Born Heroes. You’re interested in the minimal running footwear revolution. You want to shift your diet and improve your performance. You’ve thought about moving to the country. You’re a runner of any distance. You want to be a writer. You want to know how the heck he trains with donkeys. The fundamental flaw in our civilization is that it’s convinced itself that it’s the best way to live. But there are cracks in the drywall. In a conversation that starts off about running, veers into politics and concludes with donkeys, Christopher McDougall and I examine the damage. Then, a visit with Paul Sherban, a recent college graduate who rode 4,500 miles on his bicycle in search of slowness, not speed. He rode in effort to forget himself and found that the real lesson he learned was that he couldn’t have done it without the help of the many strangers he met along the way. This episode first aired on WLRI 93 FM on Saturday 3/25/17.From Dec 27, 2016:Christopher McDougall is well known for his 2009 book Born to Run, which, among many other things, tells the story of the Tarahumara (Rarámuri), the tribe who (literally) ran away from the Spanish Conquistadors in the 16th century – and never came back. The book features the stories of several colorful characters including the peripatetic runner known as Caballo Blanco, who died in 2012, the podcaster/antelope-chaser Scott Carrier and the effervescent ultra-runner Scott Jurek. For me, it was singularly important because it convinced me to take off my shoes and run barefoot.Ever since seeing him on The Daily Show and then reading the book, I’ve wanted to ask Chris about the irony of embracing barefoot running in the 21st century, when every single technological advancement (and accompanying advertising) seems to implore us to do otherwise. This notion goes beyond athletics; our culture has deliberately forgotten myriad practices that our ancestors employed tens of thousands of years ago. Are we better off as a result? Chris and I seem to agree that we’re not.Chris has recently taken up another ancestral activity: animal partnerships. As he details in his New York Times series “Running With Sherman,” Chris’s latest endeavor is burro-running, which more than anything else requires a quality our culture seems to devalue: patience. He’s currently working on a book about this venture, to accompany Born to Run and Natural Born Heroes (2015).http://samschindler.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/WWWA_035_Running_Riding_032517.mp3DOWNLOAD this episodeSUBSCRIBE to this podcast See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Christopher McDougall is a brilliant story teller (and author of Born to Run). In this great book, he weaves together a number of different narratives, with an emphasis on two: one about an extraordinary wartime adventure on Crete and the other about Natural Movement. In the process, he shares a ton of Ideas on how we can each tap into the extraordinary superpowers latent within. Big Ideas we explore include the ancient Greek meaning of the word “hero,” the mantra of the hero, why weeds + fat are optimal fuel and a great test.

During World War II the Greek island of Crete was occupied by the Nazis and was a strategic stronghold. To take back the island, Great Britain created a small band of misfit resistance fighters consisting of poets, historians, and Cretan shepherds. Their job was to muck things up for the Nazis, but one day they decided to do something completely audacious: kidnap a German general and get him off the island. Against all the odds, they accomplished their mission. How’d they do it? My guest today on the podcast went to Crete to follow in the footsteps of these WWII resistance fighters and along the way discovered that they had tapped into the ancient Greek art of the hero. His name is Christopher McDougall and in his book Natural Born Heroes, he takes readers on a whirlwind tour through history, psychology, and fitness to show how these clever, courageous Englishmen emulated Odysseys and other Greek heroes and what regular Joes can do to live more heroically. In today’s episode, Chris and I discuss the mindset, the virtues, and the skills needed to become an ancient Greek hero.
How important is diet to running performance? It's a question Food Programme listener and runner Nicole Marais wanted answers too and so she emailed the programme's production team. This programme explains what happened next.... When Dan Saladino went to meet (and run with) Nicole she explained she had tried lots of different diets, from one based on meat, to a vegetarian diet and onto veganism. She was keen to hear the experience of other runners and athletes and how they eat to run. Dan hears from Kevin Currell, Head of Performance Nutrition at the English Institute of Sport, to find out about the dietary advice given to Britain's elite athletes. Adharanand Finn, author of 'Running with the Kenyans', shares his insights into running, racing and eating in Iten, the town where many of the world's most successful distance runners live and train. Kenyan runners eat a lot of ugali, a carbohydrate rich porridge made of maize flour and water. Elsewhere however, others are arguing that a low-carb, high-fat diet will help runners reach peak performance. Author of Born to Run and Natural Born Heroes, Christopher McDougall, profiles diets based on this principle, that fuelled long runs by resistance fighters during the Second World War and early Iron Man events in the 1980's. It's a controversial approach and many believe it's just the latest food fad to be picked up by people in the running world. The programme also features Scott Jurek who eats a carbohydrate rich, vegan diet. It's enabled him to dominate runs like Badwater, a 135 mile race through America's Death Valley. Will these athletes and running writers give listener Nicole Marais the information she needs to break her own record in this year's London Marathon? Listen, find out and perhaps go on a run afterwards. Produced and presented by Dan Saladino. Researcher: Camellia Sinclair.

In this week’s episode I interview bestselling author, athlete and publishing sensation Chris McDougall. Chris is the author of ‘Born to Run’ which is arguably responsible for the modern barefoot running movement and he has more recently published ‘Natural Born Heroes’ which tells the remarkable tale of the defence of Crete during WW2. Along the way the novel explores such diverse themes as diet, parkour, martial arts, instinctive throwing and just what it takes to be heroic. Chris learned to throw knives and tomahawks under the tutelege of Joe Darrah and Patrick Brewster and demonstrated his own skill by throwing everyday kitchen knives while on the stage before sell-out audiences during his international book signing tour in 2015. In this interview we discuss throwing, training, reconnecting to our instincts and his current magnificent obsession which involves mountains, running and a donkey called Sherman!

"Turn running into play" - Chris McDougall I am super excited for this episode because my guest is one of my personal adventure heroes! He is the very definition of a curious explorer, and all his work ties back into the simple truth of having fun being a human. Chris McDougall is perhaps best know for his phenomenal 2009 book, Born to Run, where he explores running as a human birthright, by following the Tarahumara indians of Copper Canyon, Mexico. Born to Run is one of the main reasons I started eating chia seeds and got back into train running when I lived in Montana. Born to Run is also currently being made into a movie with Matthew McConaughey. Chris has another amazing new book out in Natural Born Heroes which tells a further story of Cretan resistance runners in WWII, parkour, and human performance. This episode was a ton of fun for me, as Chris and I share a lot of common interests. We go over both his books, and broadly covers diet, running, athletic performance, movement, evolution, and mindset. I think you will be fascinated at how many different ideas Chris can bring into the conversation. If you are at all interested in optimal human performance, running, or health, this is the episode for you!
