In this episode of the Pull Hook Golf podcast, host Matt Cook delves into the dynamic intersection of golf and entrepreneurship with guest Matt Erley of Old Tom Venture Club. As we dive into the world of venture capital within the golf industry, listeners are privy to groundbreaking insights on what it takes to invest in the sport's future. Matt Erley shares his journey from building startups like Drizzly and Havenly to channeling his investment acumen into Old Tom Ventures. He discusses how traditional golf is blending with new market segments, and the significance of supporting ventures that are innovative yet resonate with the core values of golf. Matt emphasizes looking beyond golf-themed concepts to substantive businesses capable of flourishing within the golf ecosystem, all the while sustaining a broader market appeal. Key Takeaways: Preeminent aspect for investment is identifying compelling founders who can demonstrate grit and adaptability. It's crucial for startups to have not just a great idea, but a calculated growth model showing momentum before seeking investment. Founders should develop businesses with a sound structure and sizable market instead of relying solely on their passion for golf. Old Tom Venture Club invests in diverse golf-related ventures, from tech startups like Drivebox and Fair Game to innovative products like Putter, and even extends to niche areas like Sweden's Cove Spirits. Future of golf is represented by a fusion of traditional, simulator-based, and digital experiences that expand the sport's reach and inclusivity. Notable Quotes: "It's about survival, right? Like, when you're an entrepreneur, your spirit animal is a cockroach because it's the last to die." "Focus on building a good business that just happens to be in the golf space, not building a golf business." "Golf is going to be whatever somebody wants golf to be for them, and it's going to be a much less confined or defined sport." "Don't qualify your opportunities with your group of friends... Go talk to people who don't even like golf." Resources: Old Tom Venture Club: Old Tom VC - Website for syndicate investments and inquiries for interested accredited investors or golf startups. About the Guest(s): Matt Erley is an entrepreneur and investor with a significant background in company building and startups. As an early team member at Drizly, he played a crucial role in scaling the alcohol delivery business. He also contributed to the development of Havenly, an online interior design service, and has been involved in other startups. Most recently, Matt Erley is known for his venture into the golf industry as the co-founder of Old Tom Venture Club, a strategic investment group entirely focused on golf innovation and entrepreneurship. His passion for golf and expertise in venture capital makes him a pivotal figure in shaping the future of golf ventures. Emily jokes that she builds businesses based on the phase of life she is in, and she's not lying. Her first business came from a shared need with her sister for online interior design. There's no shortage of advice out there for founders. Just do a quick google search and you'll find list after list of things “every entrepreneur should do,” or “10 rules of being a founder.” But what if you know doing things the way everyone else does isn't right for you? And, how do you decide what is right for you and your company? To answer that, we're talking with Denver-based Founder and CEO, Lee Mayer of Havenly and venture capital investor Curt Roberts to bring you both sides of a Perfect Pitch. In this episode, we'll talk about: How founders can know when (and if) they're ready for fundraising Lee's experience with asking an early investor to resign from Havenly's board When giving away control can actually benefit your startup Changing consumer behavior with persuasion
Lee Mayer describes how patient, disciplined growth was the key to building Havenly, the only online interior design company that has not only survived where competitors failed, but also flourished.
Lee Mayer is the co-founder and CEO of Havenly, an online interior design company that makes interior decorating services more accessible and affordable to all. In 2013, Lee had just relocated from a small NYC apartment to a larger home with considerably more space in Denver, Colorado. Overwhelmed by all the furniture and decor choices to be made, Lee was frustrated by the lack of quick, simple, budget-friendly interior design options that were available to her. As someone who never thought of herself as an entrepreneur, especially growing up with certain cultural expectations from her Indian family, Lee tried to convince all her friends to start an online interior design company to solve the problem. After spending months in an empty home, Lee, encouraged by her sister Emily, quit her lucrative career in finance and the two started the company together. Neither of them had interior design or tech backgrounds but were confident that there was a need in the market.Under Lee’s leadership, Havenly has raised $58 million dollars in funding from top tier investors and is now the leader in the world of online design while many competitors have struggled or even failed to stay afloat. In this episode, we'll talk to Lee about:* How Lee’s upbringing and cultural expectations of her Indian family impacted her career trajectory [2:25]* Lee shares how she never thought of herself as an entrepreneur & how her own narrative for becoming a tech founder changed [6:00]* Before taking the leap to start her company, Lee walks through how she thought through financial security and leaving her lucrative career [13:33]* Lee opens up about the early days of Havenly, mistakes she made along the way and what she thinks held her back [18:30]* The importance of not taking anything personally in business and blaming yourself for failures [24:35]* How to change your perspective on success and live a more purpose driven life [27:50]* Lee’s experience raising $58 million dollars from venture capitalists & how she dealt with 140 no’s [29:14]* How to overcome imposter syndrome and deal with the naysayers [40:40]* Lee walks through the silver lining of her divorce and how it pushed her to ask for help which benefited both her personal & professional life [44:53]* How Lee manages her family life and a high growth business & why the partner you select in your life is one of the most important decisions you'll ever make [48:38]Follow Lee:* Personal Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/leeathavenly/* Havenly Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thehavenly/* Website: https://havenly.com/Follow Yasmin:* Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/yasminknouri/* Stay updated & subscribe to our newsletter: https://www.behindherempire.com/ See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Interior design platform Havenly is raising $32 million in new funding to create its first private label brand as the startup aims to integrate its own products into its design recommendation engine. The Denver-based startup is an online interior design consultancy of sorts that pairs with expert designers users looking to redesign their homes or apartments. For Havenly, there have been two sides of the business, commercial partnerships with vendors and the paid design services for users.
Lauren Cox and CJ Willey work at Havenly, which pairs you with your own personal interior decorator. With designers all over the country, Havenly has built a custom platform to get to know your unique style preferences and help you - or your client - design the perfect space. Whether it's a closing gift, a home staging, or your own treat to yourself, check out Havenly at Havenly.com.
Lee Mayer began by trying to get other people to start her company. It was 2013 and she needed a quick, affordable design service to help with a new home in Denver—a reluctant entrepreneur, it took a push from Mayer’s sister to get her to found the company herself. Six years later, Havenly has outlasted many of its competitors in the world of online design, and Mayer continues to innovate the model. In this episode of the Business of Home podcast, she shares her startup journey, discusses the difficulties of scaling a high-touch business, and explains how her company is priming a whole new audience to the benefits of great design. This episode is sponsored by High Point Market and Crypton.
Lee Mayer is the Co-Founder and CEO of Havenly - the popular online interior design and e-commerce company. In 2014, Lee created Havenly to make decorating a home easier, and more budget-friendly for everyone after buying her first home and struggling to find an affordable designer. Before Havenly, Lee attended Harvard Business School. Lee oversees Havenly’s work with 200+ professional designers nationwide, and manages the company’s 600+ furnishing partnerships that filters through millions of products. Lee has also spearheaded Havenly’s business to grow 14x over the past two years, landing the company a spot on CNBC’s 2018 Upstart 100 list. In this episode, Lee touches on the importance of creating an authentic space for yourself through design, judgment she's faced for creating her company, the importance of representation in big positions, ways to network, and much more. Lee also shares her thoughts on what she's learned from being a CEO and the many struggles and sacrifices that come with having that vital role.FOLLOW HAVENLY:INSTA: @thehavenlyWEBSITE: www.havenly.comCONTACT TARA: INSTA: @tara.mont / @trustandthrive FACEBOOK: bit.ly/FBtaramontWEBSITE: www.tara-mont.comEMAIL: tara@tara-mont.com

We get skeeved out by the latest accusations of "Making a Murderer" defense-lawyer-now-judge Len Kachinsky (cue your own cat noises). There's a notable cameo in "Sword & Scale." And we toss around our thoughts on the Onion's new true crime parody podcast, "A Very Fatal Murder." Does a send up of the crime podcast world seem like it's about three months too late? Then a no-blarney, spoiler-free review of Audible's new 13-part series, "West Cork." The famous1996 murder of Sophie Toscan du Plantier is relatively unknown to American listeners. Not since "Serial" have we had such access to a prime suspect. We'll tell you whether you should make time for this one. FOR A LIMITED TIME, YOU CAN LISTEN TO WEST CORK FOR FREE ON AUDIBLE - EVEN IF YOU DON'T HAVE A SUBSCRIPTION. Our review is truly spoiler-free, but if you still want to skip right to our verdicts, go to 53:22. Then in Crime of Week, how else are you going to carry all that dough around? To many, the mere thought of Richard Ramirez evokes terror. During the mid 1980s, Ramirez terrorized the Los Angeles and San Francisco areas as a serial killer, rapist, and burglar. He murdered at least 13 people and victimized many more. The press would dub him "The Night Stalker".Join Mike and Gibby as they discuss this serial killer whose talk of Satanism and lack of remorse for his crimes would captivate the world. What happened to Richard Ramirez during his formative years that may have led him to become him the monster he did? Oh no! We went there! The Crime Writers discuss the controversial Netflix doc "Amanda Knox." Why are we still intrigued by the murder case? Does any of the evidence add up? Is the motive believable? Is Knox herself credible? As she says, "Either I am a psychopath in sheep's clothing or I am you." Rebecca and Kevin welcome back Dr. Elizabeth Yardley to explain why the British have such a different (and more visceral) view of the case than Americans do. Could it be they were each seeing a different case in their papers and on their TV screens? Bigger question: how bad are the writers going to get trolled on Twitter for their views? Because it seems some people - not everyone, but some - feel really, really, REALLY strongly about this case and you better agree with them in 140 characters (or the 140 consecutive tweets with which they will flood your feed)! In Crime of the Week...a SWAT team takes out an 81-year-old woman for growing a single marijuana plant. Good thing she wasn't stealing cable TV...she'd probably be dead. The Crime Writers take on what's good - and what's *not* so good - about the The Case of JonBenet, the four-hour CBS special featuring profilers Jim Clemente and Laura Richards and an all-star cast of forensic investigators. We talk about the case, the show's WTF moments (THEY BUILT THE HOUSE??), and dive deep into the potential defamation of Burke Ramsey, who is (in the experts' opinions) a leading suspect in the cold case. We also chat with Ann Bartow, a law professor at UNH Law School and expert on all things defamation and internet speech, and tie that conversation in with issues raised in this week's episode of the excellent In The Dark podcast. Finally, our crime of the week has Rebecca airing an old grudge with her favorite public radio host, Ira Glass. Episode sponsors are the Havenly app (use promo code "crime") and Modcloth (also use promo code "crime") - and yes, we sometimes flub the ads, as you'll hear in the outtakes. Lee Mayer, CEO of Havenly, joins Sue Heilbronner on the Real Leaders podcast to talk about the rapid growth of this cutting-edge design service. Lee shares reflections on the last two years and the role luck and gratitude has played in getting Havenly to where it is today. What comes through is that Lee has almost no sense of entitlement, and she values diligence and hard work in her staff above all else. Lee says “the hard problems are the profitable problems.” Leaving a cushy, well-paid job in New York to begin a new life and career in Colorado, Lee says she has grown more personally and professionally while developing her company than ever before. Havenly's core value is to "deliver on the delight factor," and Lee is finding savvy ways to turn this esoteric notion into a model that can be used across multiple products and markets for Havenly. Listen in as this founder and CEO discusses her high bar for hiring, her views of looking at the competition, and her sense of what makes for a great day at Havenly.
