Oh Death, You Are Dead To Me!Isaiah 25:7-8 "On this mountain he will destroy the shroud that enfolds all peoples, the sheet that covers all nations; he will swallow up death forever. The Sovereign Lord will wipe away the tears from all faces; he will remove his people's disgrace from all the earth. The Lord has spoken.”This morning, I was thinking about using a song that I have heard a lot lately, which I thought would be really good and go with the theme of mentoring for this month. Then, while I was driving my son to school, this other song came on the radio, and I felt like it was a song we all needed to hear. The song is called “Oh Death” and is sung by MercyMe. I will go into the song in a bit, but first, let's talk about this verse. It begins by saying, “On this mountain He will destroy the shroud that enfolds all peoples, the sheet that covers the nations.” It was believed that there was a veil of sorts over the whole land that prevented people from seeing and following the Lord and living the way He wants us to live. I would say this is still true today. The enemy tries to put a veil in front of us so that we don't want to live the way God wants us to live. He tries to separate us from the Lord. Before Jesus died on the cross, there was a veil separating us from the Lord that was put there by God. After Adam and Eve ate from the tree, they could no longer have free access to God. From then on, only certain people could see God and talk with the Lord. However, once Jesus died on that cross, that veil was torn in two, literally. (Matthew 27:51). Now we have free access to the Lord. There is nothing separating us from talking with him. He did not want that separation anymore. However, the enemy likes to put up walls and make us believe that the Lord is too busy for us or that God is too great and we are not worthy to talk with Him. There is definitely some sort of veil over the world that tries to dim God's light and separate us from Him. The enemy wants us to feel separate from God because when we feel apart from Him, fear can creep in and try to turn us away from God. This verse is reminding us that God will destroy that veil just as he did the other one.The next line is the one that reminds me of the song. It says that the Lord will swallow up death forever. I know so many people who are afraid to die. And that makes sense because we don't want to leave our loved ones and our friends. We aren't ready to say goodbye yet, or maybe we aren't sure our loved ones are ready. Will they be ok without us? Will they be ok on their own? These are all questions that go through our minds when we think about death. We also might be worried about death because no one knows for sure what it is all about. No one knows quite what to expect. We hope that we will be in heaven with God, but then we have the enemy whispering in our ear, telling us we won't be. He reminds us of all that we have done wrong and tells us there is no way that we will get to be with God, not with what we have done. The enemy is a liar! Don't believe him. Yes, you may have done some pretty bad things, we all have. Yet, Jesus took all of that to the cross with Him, so don't let the enemy pile it onto your shoulders again. The verse above also says, “The Sovereign Lord will wipe away the tears from all faces; he will remove his people's disgrace from all the earth.” God is so gentle and caring that He wipes away the tears from our faces. He not only takes away our pain, but he wipes our tears too! He also removes all disgrace that we have. The devil wants us to keep our disgrace and our shame. He reminds us of it so often that it seems like we will never forget. However, verses like this remind us that God does not hold onto the things we have done after we repent for them. So, if God isn't holding on to it, why are we?I wanted to share this song with you today because I know a lot of people who are pretty sick. Several people listening to this podcast are chronically in pain. There are several who are listening who worry about loved ones who are sick. What I love most about this song is the upbeat music and the lyrics. When you feel down, or when you feel like you might be scared of death, or scared that the enemy might be winning the fight, listen to the lyric video of this song and sing along with it. I bet your fear will disappear. The song begins:You said my fate was sealed, you said my days were numberedCase closed with no appeal, my future six feet underMessin' with my head in ghost fashionMy heart was holdin' its breath (holdin' its breath)Terrified of takin' my last oneOh death, you scared me to deathThis is what the enemy does. He whispers all these lies in our ears and he does it so often that we start to believe them. This is why it is so important to spend more time reading the scriptures, and surrounding ourselves with people who speak light and truth into our lives. If we hear the lies more often then we hear the truth, of course we are going to believe it. We have to make sure we are hearing the truth more often!Whoa, you ain't my king thoughWhoa, where did your sting go?Oh death, I will not be afraidIn the end, you will loseI will dance on your grave with the one who buried youYou ain't nothin' but a stone that my savior rolled awaySet you straight and set me freeOh death, you are dead to me(Oh dear, you are dead to me)This chorus is great because it shows the enemy that we are not afraid. God is our King; He is the one who decides everything. The enemy has no say. If we can stop thinking of the enemy as this giant thing that can take us down and start thinking of him like it talks about him in this song, I am sure we would feel stronger. This song says, “I will dance on your grave with the one who buried you. You ain't nothin' but a stone that my savior rolled away. Set you straight and set me free.”God already defeated death and sin when He sent His only Son to be sacrificed for us. We don't have to be scared of death. Death was already defeated when Jesus rose again. We don't have to be scared of it! God already won the war of good vs. evil and death vs. life. I love how the song says that we will dance on the devil's grave with the one who buried him!My faith don't flinch, it's alrightDevil, come get off of my shoulderYou thought you had the last laughYou thought this song was overWhoa, you ain't my king thoughWhoa, where did your sting go?Oh death, I will not be afraidIn the end, you will loseI will dance on your grave with the one who buried youYou ain't nothin' but a stone that my savior rolled awaySet you straight and set me freeOh death, you are dead to meOh death, you are dead to meThe enemy always thinks he has the last laugh or the last word. He refuses to accept that he has lost the war. We need to be on guard to protect ourselves from the enemy but we don't need to be afraid of him. If we are constantly turning back to the Lord. If we are rooted in the Lord and His love for us, then the enemy doesn't stand a chance! The song goes on to say:Yeah, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of youI know I'm just passin' through, oh yeahThough I walk through the valley of the shadow of youI know I'm just passin' through, oh yeahOh death, I will not be afraidIn the end, you will loseI will dance on your grave with the one who buried youYou ain't nothin' but a stone that my savior rolled awaySet you straight and set me freeOh death, you are dead to meI like this last verse too because it reminds us of something very important. It says, “Yeah, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of you. I know I'm just passin' through.” This is important for us to know. Yes, we will be in the valley sometimes. Yes, the enemy will attack us sometimes, and yet the Lord is always there with us. He will always be there to save us. We are stuck in that valley, and no matter how much it feels like it, you aren't going to stay there forever. You are just passing through to pick up whatever you need for your next adventure in life. Maybe you need more perseverance, resilience, strength, peace, healing, whatever it is that this valley is teaching you. You are just passing through to level up so you can make it through the next season of your life.I pray this song makes you smile. It makes me smile when I hear it on the radio. It makes me smile when I imagine myself dancing to this song on top of the devil's grave with Jesus. It makes me smile when I think about how God rolled away the stone and rose so we could be forgiven. It makes me smile to remember I am just passing through this valley, and even though it seems like I have been here forever, I will get out of it. I invite you to look up this song on YouTube, Spotify, or wherever you listen to music and hear this song today. It really is a great song with a great beat.Dear Heavenly Father, I ask you to bless all those listening to this episode today! Lord, we love you. Please help us to remember we are just passing through this valley. Please help us to see that you have already defeated death, and we have nothing to be afraid of. Please help us to walk in your light and not in the darkness. Please help us to stand firm in the truth that you are our Lord and you have defeated evil. We thank you Lord and we ask all of this in accordance with your will and in Jesus's holy name, Amen!Thank you so much for joining me on this journey to walk boldly with Jesus. I look forward to meeting you here again tomorrow. Remember Jesus loves you just as you are, and so do I! In this episode, the hosts had the pleasure of welcoming the incredibly talented Jon Tyler Wiley from Jon Tyler Wiley and his Virginia Choir. The conversation kicked off with a light-hearted and humorous tone as they navigated through a minor mix-up about Wiley's participation in the Rock by the Sea event, which led to some playful banter about unexpected gig announcements.Wiley shared insights into his busy schedule, hinting at exciting developments and reflecting on the bustling year he's had. The discussion took a deeper dive as they explored significant events coinciding with their meeting, such as surviving a tornado and experiencing an eclipse, which Wiley humorously noted he wasn't too keen on.A significant portion of the conversation centered around Wiley's new record, "Pictures in the Dark," released on March 28th. Wiley expressed his relief and excitement about the album's release, describing it as a snapshot of his life during the pandemic. He detailed the creative process behind the album, revealing that while some songs had been in the works for years, many were born out of the recent global upheaval, capturing the essence of his experiences and emotions during that time. One of the most poignant moments of the episode was Wiley's discussion about the song "Flowers," which he described as the most personal song he has ever written. The song was inspired by his and his wife's painful journey through miscarriages, capturing the essence of grief and support they experienced. Wiley's candidness about such a personal and often taboo subject touched on the universal themes of loss and the healing power of community and shared experiences.Listeners also got a glimpse into Wiley's life beyond music. He gave them a virtual tour of his studio, filled with memorabilia, instruments, and even a foosball table, painting a picture of a space that is both a creative haven and a personal retreat. As the episode wrapped up, Wiley reflected on the impact of his music on listeners, particularly how songs like "Flowers" resonate with others who have faced similar hardships. He shared his appreciation for the music community, especially the unique connections formed through events like the Rock Boat music festival.Overall, the episode was not only an exploration of Jon Tyler Wiley's latest musical achievements but also a deep and meaningful conversation about life, creativity, and coping with the challenges that life throws our way. It was an enlightening and heartfelt addition to the podcast series, offering listeners both entertainment and profound insights.Stay Connected with Jon Tyler Wiley: Website: https://jontylerwiley.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/JonTylerWiley/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jontylerwileyhvc/ BandsInTown: https://www.bandsintown.com/a/15467173 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC-J4ciVRj08K1lPyXEeueKwTimestamped ChaptersTimestamped Chapters00:00:00 - Introduction and Greetings John Tyler Wiley is introduced and welcomed to the podcast.00:00:21 - Updates from John Tyler Wiley John discusses his busy year and upcoming plans.00:01:04 - Miscommunication about Event Attendance A humorous mix-up about John attending the Rock by the Sea event.00:02:11 - Signature and Identity Theft Joke John jokes about his signature potentially being forged.00:02:24 - Climate Events and Eclipse Discussion Discussion about recent climate events and the solar eclipse, including personal anecdotes about viewing the eclipse.00:05:32 - New Record Release: "Pictures in the Dark" John talks about the release of his new record and the feelings associated with its release.00:06:21 - Recent Performances and Special Guests John recounts his record release show and mentions special guests who performed with him.00:07:44 - Songwriting Process for "Pictures in the Dark" John explains his approach to songwriting for his latest album, focusing on themes and life events.00:10:25 - Personal Stories Behind the Songs John shares the deeply personal stories behind the songs "Flowers" and "Oh Death," including themes of mortality and personal loss.00:18:57 - Studio Setup and Equipment John describes his home studio setup, including equipment and the environment for recording.00:21:59 - Listening to Album Masters and Band Feedback Discussion about the process of finalizing the album with the band and listening to the masters.00:24:13 - Album Artwork and Concept John explains the concept behind the album artwork for "Pictures in the Dark."00:27:24 - Importance of Song Stories and Writer's Rounds John expresses his appreciation for hearing the stories behind songs and hosting writer's rounds.00:29:14 - Tour Plans and Favorite Venues John discusses his tour schedule and his favorite venues to perform at.00:31:31 - Worst Green Room Experience John shares an anecdote about his worst experience with accommodations while on tour.00:35:13 - Closing Remarks and Future Hopes John expresses gratitude for the podcast interview and his hopes for future opportunities, including returning to the music festival on the boat. The BoatCast would like to thank our sponsors, www.TheFITCollective.com for supporting us in promoting Rock Boat Artists. Pastor Eric took us on a journey involving two people in the story of Jesus and his journey to his death and resurrection: Nicodemus and Mary. Two very different people and yet they both had these moments with Jesus that essentially changed their entire lives. One was apart of the religious establishment which made the decision to crucify him and the other sold her body for a living. Here we see how Jesus was able to touch two very different people and because he rose from the dead he created pathways for people to move from being dead to alive. Editor of Delano Magazine, Duncan Roberts joined Tom in the studio to discuss next year's general Elections. The discussion began with a comparison to the current situation in the UK where the conservative party are in the process of choosing their 3rd leader in 4 months. Comparatively Luxembourg's Leadership has been extrememly stable with 3 prime ministers serving since 1984. Luxembourg is currently ruled by three parties, the DP the LSAP and Dei Greng in coalition. Going into the next elections, the housing crisis, mobility, inflation and possibly the war in Ukraine if it continues into next year will all be pressing issues for an incoming Government to face. Duncan's event picks for this week included: Wednesday 26 October to Thursday 27 October : Arch Summit Thursday 27 October : Molly Lewis at Rotondes Thursday 27 October to Friday 28 October : Korean film festival And his personal pick was a new track by Swedish band Goat "Under No Nation" from brand their new album Oh Death.
Death is universal, an undeniable fact of existence that every single one of our ancestors faced, just as we will. So mythic traditions around the world are full of stories of death. Many initiatory rituals directly enact death, taking the initiate through a process of dying while alive. For Ancient Egyptians and Tibetan Tantrikas, death was not something to run from, but something to actively embrace, as acolytes regularly plunged into the intermediary state. Yet modern culture tries to run from the reality of death. For in an individualistic world, what could be more terrifying than individual death? So billionaires feverishly seek to reverse the aging process and 'solve death.' And yet, in seeking to stave off death at all costs, and in the absence of a healthy intimate relationship with death, modern consumerism also enacts death on a massive scale. For modern culture to reconcile its terror of death requires a deep re-orientation around the place of the individual within the universe. For if “I” am not an isolated unit but rather a continuum of ancestry, then what actually dies? If "I" am water molecules momentarily repurposed as a human on my way to become streams and summer thunderstorms, then what actually dies? So death, as described by tradition after tradition, is a great continuance, a great cycling of matter... and perhaps more. This episode dives deep into the mytho-somatics of death, providing a felt journey into a place many fear to tread, but a place that for many traditions was absolutely essential to navigate while alive. Join us as we explore Tantric death texts, Japanese death poems, Siberian death realms, heroic death epics and culminate with a journey into 4500-year-old Egyptian funerary texts in which death and spoken poetry are intimately linked. Rising Appalachia reprise the old folk classic 'Oh Death' specifically for this episode. Last week we discussed the urgency of living life toward the Kingdom in the face of our limited time on this side of eternity. This week we talk about the other end of eternity and the beautiful promise we have in Christ's resurrection. Christ, Himself makes it clear that death is nothing to fear, it is a defeated enemy, and discipleship to Christ is the safest place in this world!
Why is Death and Dying so scary? Is it the unknown? Fear of pain? In this episode, Amie and Sara discuss all things related to death and dying. How do nurses and other healthcare professionals deal with death and dying? Are we expected to be desensitized to death? Does this impact our emotional wellbeing or the way we deliver palliative care to patients and families? We also discuss the narrative on death and how it has been depicted in films and television and how this shapes our viewpoints and perspectives. We would like to dedicate this episode to Dr. Nadia Chaudhri, whose grace, fearlessness and poise in life and death will continue on for decades to come. https://www.chaudhrilab.com/ https://www.concordia.ca/alumni-friends/giving-to-concordia/fundone/nadia-chaudhri-wingspan-award.html https://www.nytimes.com/2021/10/20/health/nadia-chaudhri-dead.html How Death Anxiety Impacts Nurses' Caring for Patients at the End of Life: A Review of Literature Brene Brown on Empathy Nadia Chaudhri, beloved Montreal neuroscientist with fans worldwide, has died Thank you to our sponsor Samuel Merritt University! Let us begin to be mindful that God IS the God Who sees....He is El Roi. Our sin offers us death not life eternal or while we are yet living. He is watching the fruit we bear and the sin we commit. Let your testimony be BUT THANKS TO OUR LORD, JESUS CHRIST! Let God save and deliver you from sin. Death is a part of life, and many people have realized that over the years. But our present society has an irrational fear of death. Part of the Christian life is a recognition of the mortality of man, and the eternity of our souls. Here is why this is important. 1 Corinthians 15:54-58 Psalm 37:4

In this season it is important to understand that an end will surely come. The enemy may try but the Lord fights for HIS people. Therefore, at this point it is pertinent to recognize whose side you are on. Be in right standing with God, ask for mercy, repent of your evil ways and be baptized with water in Jesus name and in the Holy Spirit. 2 Samuel 24 will enlighten us a little bit about our current situation which will eventually fizzle away, it surely will not exceed the number of days it was sent to destroy. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/anne9431/message

Will Collins emailed: “Hey Marc (if I can call you that), I only found your podcast at the beginning of October but it's already got its hooks in me. I am a junior in college dual majoring in engineering and math. This isn't as exciting as anyone else, but I listen to the newest episodes and the giant backlog that exists every saturday during my 8-hour study sessions. It really makes the time fly, and I really appreciate all the work you put into making the best podcast around! Hope this finds you merry,“ Thanks Will. I’m so glad you found the show. It’s funny. You say that listening while studying for eight hours isn’t as exciting, but man, I love to hear it. Sure it’s nice to think that we are all traveling in Ireland or Scotland, and listening to the podcast. But the truth is I listen while cleaning house, giving the girls a bath, or playing it to wear out overactive daughters right before bed. Most of our lives are spent in mundane tasks. And while you may think it is uninteresting, personally, I find those mundane pieces of life to be fascinating and inspiring. And it lets me know how to make the show better. So thank you
In this episode we discuss the very peculiar lack of details surrounding the Las Vegas shooter, but remind the listeners that Jesus told us not to fear the likes of Stephen Paddock -- who can only kill the body -- but to fear those who can kill both the soul and the body (even if they are members of the Society of Jesus). We also talked about the Filial Correction delivered to the occupant of Casa Santa Marta and which factors are working to destroy the Papacy and the Church at the moment. Remember: the most important thing you will ever do is die, and the state of your soul when that happens determines your eternal destiny. I listened to several versions and used "mmuussiiccaall's" tabs and came up with this version. It has a few "flub ups". Maybe you will like it anyway. I am playing my homebuilt 12 inch cherry banjo and recorded this on a zoom H5. Larry

1- YOU'D PLAYED FOR A LOT OF DIFFERENT KINDS OF PEOPLE, LIKE SOMETIMES YOU'D PLA YED FOR JUST P ARTIES AND THEN SOMETIMES YOU PLA YED FOR HIGH-PRICED MONEY. "Well, played where we'd collect off each person come in, you know -- pay so much. " WHAT KIND OF... WAS THAT A SHOW YOU PUT ON? "Yeah, it was a show, a musical show, you know. I had other musicians with me then. I had a real good fiddler and two guitar players part of the time, and sometimes I had a girl that played a ukelele -- and she danced, too. They was four in my band one time, they danced. " WHAT WERE THEIR NAMES? "I played with Beulah Boatwright, Scott Boatwright - - both them was very good musicians. " FROM AROUND HERE? " Y es,from Scott County over here. Scott lives over there now.I think Beulah lives back over there. I played with Charlie Powers and (an) old man, his father, was a fiddler, old time fiddler. He made phonograph records, they did, for Victor back years ago, before ever I made any, and Charlie he come stayed with me for about a year and he played the guitar with me. And Scott Boatwright come stayed with me a while, and also Melvin Robnett -- played the fiddle, he's a very good fiddler. We played country theaters, schools, high schools -- schools in the country we'd have plumb full. Lot of times we'd make three, four hundred dollars a week. " ABOUT WHEN WAS THAT? "That was back in '2-- I believe it was '29. " ' AFTER YOUR RECORDS HAD COME OUT? "Yes." DO YOU THINK THAT HELPED YOUR RECORDS, OR THE RECORDS HELPED THAT? "The records helped get the crowds, I'm pretty sure, because a lot of them that had my records had never heard me play in person. They came out to hear us play. " 2- THIS TUNING, KEY, THAT YOU USE HERE IN THE KEY OF D, WHERE YOU PLAY'THE COUNTRY BLUES,' DO YOU REMEMBER WHERE IT WAS YOU EVER FIRST HEARD THAT, OR DID YOU JUST WORK THAT OUT YOURSELF? " No, Homer Crawford played "The Country Blues, " or "Hustling Gamblers, " in that key, and there's so many more pieces I play: "Oh Death, " "Drunkard's Lone Child, " and " Calvary, " and "Prodigal Son" -- play that all in that. DO YOU REMEMBER WHAT TOWN THAT HE WAS FROM? "I don't know what town he was from in Tennessee. He's a photograph man made pictures for people like they used to. Carried a'camera around on his shoulders. Come up through this country and went over through The Pound. Used to stay at my uncle'S over on The Pound through there. Stayed all night with me after I was married, and he could playa fiddle and a banjo both. " HE'D PLAY AS HE CAME ALONG? "Yes, if you had an instrument, why he'd stay all night with you and play some mUSic, you know. Never did pay nothing for his lodging or anything like that. People's glad to have him because he knowed a lot of old songs. Most people liked music and they wasn't so much of it back then. They wasn't but just a few colored fellows you see played guitar then. NOW, anybody you see nearly can pick a guitar. In nearly all the Holiness churches now they have guitars. Women play them a lot. We've got two people in the church, Free Pentecostal Holiness Church of God where I belong, up on Guest's River, plays music. " I WONDER IF THIS HOMER CRAWFORD WOULD STILL BE LIVING? "I don't think he's living yet. He was a great big fleshy fellow and I heard he was dead. I've not seen him for years and I think he's dead. If he was living, he'd be getting awful old, 75 probably. I have an idea he'd be 75, maybe 80 years old now. I think he's dead. " I WONDER HOW I COULD FIND OUT WHAT TOWN HE LIVED IN? "I really haven't got no idea. " SOUNDS LIKE HE TRAVELED A LOT. "Yeah, he did. You can find lots of people knowed him. He made pictures. He had an awful good disposition, turn, every- body liked him, you know. He could Sing good. People liked that, too you know. " 3- "Well, I practiced an awful lot, and I even took a watch and timed myself, 2 minutes and 40 seconds, and if my song wasn't hardly long enough for to go the 2 minutes and 40 seconds, why I'd alternate a verse. Just pick it open and not sing, and then -- or either I'd sing from the start go or maybe I'd alternate one, pick over a piece if I didn't have hardly enough to make a record, 'till I'd make it come out to a 2 minute and 40 second record. We had different records then what we got now. And 2 minutes and 40 seconds is all we had to do it, and we had altogether different technique and way they made the record than the way they do now, I suppose. I made records in New York the first time, in Chicago the second time, but they record them now down in Memphis Tennessee and different places. " ' WHO DID YOU RECORD FOR IN CHICAGO? "For 'The Lonesome Ace -- Without A Yodel.' He's a fellow in- dividual, from up here at Richland, Virginia. W. 'E. Myers. M-y-e-r-s, Myers. W. E. Myers." DID YOU MAKE A COMPLETE LIVING PLAYING MUSIC FOR A WHILE? "Yeah, for a little while they was a few months that I didn't do anything when I was over in Kentucky. " IS THAT WHEN YOU WERE RECORDING, YOU MEAN? "That was just after I'd make those records and I figured on making some more. I was playing in schools and theaters, and I'd play for private dances or anything and make some money off it. I played for old Senator Brock and his family when they was visiting up in Kentucky over there, swimming pool. They paid me pretty good for playing; me and my band played for them. This Combs, this governor of Kentucky, I played some for him over there, too. I think it was Bert Combs. I'm pretty sure it was, can't hardly remember. It was before he was ever elected. " WHAT DID YOU CALL YOUR BAND? "The Cumber- land Mountaineers, Dock Boggs and His Cumberland Mountaineers, I believe. I've got a handbill here, where I had printed with it. Cumberl.and Mountain Entertainers, Dock Boggs and His Cumberland Mountain Entertainers. " DID YOU EVER RECORD FOR THE PARAMOUNT RECORD PEOPLE UP THERE IN, I GUESS IT WAS CHICAGO? "No, I never did make no records for them. " WAS THAT YOUR FIRST TRIP TO NEW YORK WHEN YOU WENT UP THERE? "Oh, I'd never out of these DID YOU MAKE A COMPLETE LIVING PLAYING MUSIC FOR A WHILE? "Yeah, for a little while they was a few months that I didn't do anything when I was over in Kentucky. " IS THAT WHEN YOU WERE RECORDING, YOU MEAN? " WAS THAT YOUR FIRST TRIP TO NEW YORK WHEN YOU WENT UP THERE? "Oh, I'd never out of these hills, this mountain here. I studied - - I didn't know how I was going to do, or how -- I was self- conscious enough and always had thought enough about myself to care about what people thought about me, and wanted to act as near like a human being as I should, as I could. I was afraid I'd make a lot of mistakes, but I come to find out after I went with these other fellows up there, with John Dykes and Hub Mahaffey, and Miss Vermillion. Poor old man Dykes, he was a good friend of mine -- I don't want to say any harm or anything, but he pulled some awful boners. " DO YOU REMEMBER ANY OF THEM? "Yeah, he lost his pocketbook. Got it picked in New York's Central Station in New York going in there, and didn't lose too much money, but the president of the (record) company asked him -- Brophy, I believe his name was -- asked him, 'How much did you have in your pocketbook?' He says, 'Boggs,' he turned around to me, 'Boggs, I've lost my pocketbook.' And he turned around to him and said, 'How much did you have in there, Mr. Dykes?' He said, 'Had about 12 dollars.' Said, 'Well, I wouldn't worry about that if that's all you had, ' he said. 'The worst part about it, ' he said, 'it was your fellows'.' He said, 'Well, don't let that bother you at all.' It was theirs, he give it to him to pay the expenses, you know. And then he called the waiter around while we was in New York eating in a hotel cafe: I wasn't at the table with them at that time. Miss Vermillion was telling me about it; she said she felt like sinking through the floor. He took his finger and wiggled, motioned for a waitress to come over to the table and asked her how much she got a week! "
Tribute to Dr. Ralph Stanley featuring Don Rigsby, Nathan Stanley and The Clinch Mountain Boys ABOUT DR. RALPH STANLEY Dr. Stanley is the legendary icon, that for over 6 decades, has become one of the most influential artists of all time. In 1946, along with his older brother Carter Stanley, they formed the legendary Stanley Brothers duo. The Stanley Brothers and the Clinch Mountain Boys became one of the most popular brother acts in Country Music history. After Carters death, Stanley shifted the bands musical emphasis from hard-driving bluegrass to an older, sadder, less adorned mountain style. In 2002, Stanley received his first ever Grammy Award for Best Male Country Vocal Performance of the haunting rendition of “Oh Death that was featured in the movie and soundtrack of “O Brother Where Art Thou. DON RIGSBY has remained true to his mountain roots and made his own marks as a powerful tenor and distinctive mandolin player. He has a life-long passion for the music of Dr. Ralph Stanley. His latest release, 'Doctors Orders: A Tribute to Ralph Stanley', are all songs Stanley recorded throughout his 67-year (and counting) career. Some are rare gems the Old Master seldom or never performed in his stage shows. Don is a two-time Grammy nominee and two-time winner of the SPBGMAs Traditional Male Vocalist of the Year awards. NATHAN STANLEY is the grandson of Dr. Ralph Stanley, Nathan has been called the "Prince Of Bluegrass" and an heir to the Stanley Music Royalty. His new album, 'The Legacy Continues', salutes his bluegrass forebears and introduces some newer tunes that have all the earmarks of enduring including the heartfelt self penned song "Papaw, I Love you". THE CLINCH MOUNTAIN BOYS has been the name of Dr. Stanley touring band since he and his brother started performing together as The Stanley Brothers in 1946. The band has produced some of Country and Bluegrass musics biggest stars including Ricky Skaggs, Larry Sparks and the late Keith Whitley. The Clinch Mountain Boys will be the backup band for both Nathan and Don for this historic WoodSongs broadcast

While this is not the last time I will try recording this song and tune, it's what I did a few years ago. I like the idea of singing acappella at different times in the song though those times are not set in stone. O Death is adapted from Dock Boggs banjo version and Glory in the Meeting House is from Luther Strong. The fiddle is tuned EDAE (a tuning which I think works much better than standard for those who have adapted fiddle versions of Hobart Smith's banjo tune "Last Chance").
