I find this topic personally intriguing, as it's a mindset that I struggle to fully comprehend. With an anthropological approach, we aim to explore this subject without constantly passing moral judgment. Sadism, the pleasure derived from causing pain to others, is contrasted with consensual acts of physical pain or humiliation for sexual gratification known as BDSM. I believe that as long as these behaviors are consensual and don't result in irreversible harm, they may not be a moral concern. Furthermore, I argue that many dysfunctions in society may have a sexual element, such as the behavior of a stereotypical Karen or couples engaging in hostile fights. Additionally, the power dynamics and domination present in public rituals or workplace hierarchies can harbor sadistic components. While I personally feel perplexed by sadism, I'm interested in exploring it without constantly condemning it.Chapters0:00:00 Introduction to the Fascinating Topic of Sadism0:03:50 Society's Dysfunctions and the Relationship to Sadistic Tendencies0:07:05 The Suspension of Disbelief and Sadistic Satisfaction in Fictional Violence0:07:29 The Complexity of Sadism and Paraphilias0:12:48 Paraphilias and the Distinction from Healthy Sexuality0:18:16 Hypermasculinity and the Capacity to Avoid Empathy0:21:05 Women's Expectations of Selective Empathy in Men0:28:12 The dynamics of power and masochism in relationships.0:32:10 The nature of women's thrill in being desired.0:35:50 The importance of bravery in pursuing attractive partners.0:38:42 The Pitfalls of Settling for Less0:47:22 Freud's Observations on Sadism and Masochism0:49:06 The Purpose of Pleasure: Selfishness or Pair Bonding?0:54:15 Gifts and Abilities: Serving Self or World?0:56:51 The Dehumanization of Excellence and Competition1:00:03 Domination and Submission: The Absence of Reason and Negotiation

Check the website here: http://enlites.com/   Dr. Jessica Nowicki is a Research Scientist at the Wu Tsai Neurosciences Institute at Stanford University. She is interested in the mechanistic basis of prosocial behavior in early vertebrates. She uses poison frogs, which display considerable variation in sociality among closely related species, for comparatively identifying neural correlates of pair bonding within the clade. In order to verify the functional involvement of these correlates, she then couples this with functional tests on the strongly pair bonding species, Ranitomeya imitator.   In this episode, we talk about the evolution of prosocial behavior. We talk about what prosocial behavior is, and how old it is in evolutionary history. We go through affiliative behavior, pair bonding and parental care, and empathy. We discuss how important it is to look beyond mammals, and the role of gene expression in prosocial behavior. Finally, we talk about the extended evolutionary synthesis, and how we should be wary of our own cultural biases when studying animal behavior. -- A HUGE THANK YOU TO MY PATRONS/SUPPORTERS: PER HELGE LARSEN, JERRY MULLER, HANS FREDRIK SUNDE, BERNARDO SEIXAS, OLAF ALEX, ADAM KESSEL, MATTHEW WHITINGBIRD, ARNAUD WOLFF, TIM HOLLOSY, HENRIK AHLENIUS, JOHN CONNORS, FILIP FORS CONNOLLY, DAN DEMETRIOU, ROBERT WINDHAGER, RUI INACIO, ZOOP, MARCO NEVES, COLIN HOLBROOK, PHIL KAVANAGH, SAMUEL ANDREEFF, FRANCIS FORDE, TIAGO NUNES, FERGAL CUSSEN, HAL HERZOG, NUNO MACHADO, JONATHAN LEIBRANT, JOÃO LINHARES, STANTON T, SAMUEL CORREA, ERIK HAINES, MARK SMITH, JOÃO EIRA, TOM HUMMEL, SARDUS FRANCE, DAVID SLOAN WILSON, YACILA DEZA-ARAUJO, ROMAIN ROCH, DIEGO LONDOÑO CORREA, YANICK PUNTER, ADANER USMANI, CHARLOTTE BLEASE, NICOLE BARBARO, ADAM HUNT, PAWEL OSTASZEWSKI, NELLEKE BAK, GUY MADISON, GARY G HELLMANN, SAIMA AFZAL, ADRIAN JAEGGI, PAULO TOLENTINO, JOÃO BARBOSA, JULIAN PRICE, EDWARD HALL, HEDIN BRØNNER, DOUGLAS FRY, FRANCA BORTOLOTTI, GABRIEL PONS CORTÈS, URSULA LITZCKE, SCOTT, ZACHARY FISH, TIM DUFFY, SUNNY SMITH, JON WISMAN, DANIEL FRIEDMAN, WILLIAM BUCKNER, PAUL-GEORGE ARNAUD, LUKE GLOWACKI, GEORGIOS THEOPHANOUS, CHRIS WILLIAMSON, PETER WOLOSZYN, DAVID WILLIAMS, DIOGO COSTA, ANTON ERIKSSON, CHARLES MOREY, ALEX CHAU, AMAURI MARTÍNEZ, CORALIE CHEVALLIER, BANGALORE ATHEISTS, LARRY D. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2023.07.26.550685v1?rss=1 Authors: Gustison, M. L., Munoz-Castaneda, R., Osten, P., Phelps, S. M. Abstract: Sexual bonds are central to the social lives of many species, including humans, and monogamous prairie voles have become the predominant model for investigating such attachments. We developed an automated whole-brain mapping pipeline to identify brain circuits underlying pair-bonding behavior. We identified bonding-related c-Fos induction in 68 brain regions clustered in seven major brain-wide neuronal circuits. These circuits include known regulators of bonding, such as the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis, paraventricular hypothalamus, ventral pallidum, and prefrontal cortex. They also include brain regions previously unknown to shape bonding, such as ventromedial hypothalamus, medial preoptic area and the medial amygdala, but that play essential roles in bonding-relevant processes, such as sexual behavior, social reward and territorial aggression. Contrary to some hypotheses, we found that circuits active during mating and bonding were largely sexually monomorphic. Moreover, c-Fos induction across regions was strikingly consistent between members of a pair, with activity best predicted by rates of ejaculation. A novel cluster of regions centered in the amygdala remained coordinated after bonds had formed, suggesting novel substrates for bond maintenance. Our tools and results provide an unprecedented resource for elucidating the networks that translate sexual experience into an enduring bond. Copy rights belong to original authors. Our final episode of our 2312 season is here! First, we talk about the topic on everyone's mind, the New York Times Crossword puzzle and how bad it is. We wrap that up around 6.5 minutes in. Then, we reveal the topic of our next season, and it's....drumroll....GREEN EARTH! I know this delights many of you and disappoints an equal amount, and then the final third just can't wait for our mellifluous voices to lull them back to sleep. But whatever your reaction, we're going to dive into this 1000-page behemoth starting around February 2022. We'll probably, hopefully, have a movie episode in the meantime tide over the "true heads." We talk then about resolutions that don't resolve things, closures that leave a lot open, comedy and the marriage plot, and the mode of the novel. Is this a novel? Is it an anti-novel? We talk a lot about punishment, prison, exile, and the police. Genette reveals another side of Genette-self---and we find some prounouns attributed to "him"! ***ATTENTION STAN, ATTENTION STAN, THERE ARE STILL PRONOUNS ATTACHED TO GENETTE!!!*** We conclude that, in the end, Genette is not the noir detective, in that the inspector does not see Genette as implicated in the rot at the core of the system. Genette is not crushed by the resolution, Genette does not fail in victory. Rather, the Inspector is confident in the Inspector's [holy shit it's hard to write without pronouns!] correctness, righteous in the outcome of which Genette [*pant, pant, pant*] was crucial in bringing about. Huberman Lab Podcast Notes Key Takeaways Testosterone and estrogen fluctuate across the lifespan but there are lifestyle factors and supplements which can impact levelsYou have to breathe properly to get sleep to avoid apnea states which can adversely impact sex hormone levelsSleep apnea increases carbon dioxide in the body, which decreases testosterone and estrogenNasal breathing is cosmetically optimal for features of the mouth and jaw, and more importantly dilates sinuses, improves lung capacity, and reduces apnea in sleepBarring swimmers and maximum effort, learn to breathe through the nose when exercisingJust getting breathing and bright light exposure on track can optimize sex hormonesTo optimize sex hormone levels: (1) control apnea; (2) reduce light exposure in the middle of the night and increase bright light to eyes; (3) cold exposure such as ice bath, cold shower, cold water swimHeavyweight training (70-90% max effort) – but not weight training to failure – leads to the best increases in testosterone for the subsequent 24 hour periodRead the full notes @ podcastnotes.orgThis episode I discuss the hormones testosterone and estrogen and how they impact the brain, body, and behavior at ages after puberty. I also discuss how various behaviors such as exercise (resistance and endurance training) and sex, or observing sex impact these hormones and their levels. I ask: "what specifically is it about such activities that impacts testosterone and estrogen?"; the resounding theme is that when our nervous system is activated in particular ways it drives our endocrine system and vascular system to activate or repress certain hormone networks in predictable ways. I also discuss peer-reviewed studies and protocols addressing (at a mechanistic level) how light, cold and heat, and respiration (breathing) can positively or negatively impact testosterone and estrogen. And we discuss specific supplements and compounds that peer-reviewed studies illustrate can adjust testosterone and estrogen levels: by changing their binding to other proteins, by raising them directly, or by changing other hormones released from the brain and pituitary. I discuss optimization in the normal reference ranges for these hormones, and I discuss pheromones, apnea, menstrual cycles, menopause and andropause. As always a mix of basic science, biological mechanisms and tools and protocols are discussed. **Note: Future episodes will focus on the science of prescription hormone replacement therapies, the science of hormone-based birth control and the role of testosterone, estrogen and other compounds in fertility, athletic performance and recovery.   Thank you to our sponsors: Four Sigmatic - http://foursigmatic.com/huberman Blinkist - http://blinkist.com/huberman Theragun - http://theragun.com/huberman   Bloodwork sponsor: InsideTracker - http://insidetracker.com/huberman   Our Patreon page: https://www.patreon.com/andrewhuberman   Supplements from Thorne: http://www.thorne.com/u/huberman   Social: Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/hubermanlab Twitter - https://twitter.com/hubermanlab   References: http://examine.com “Behavioral Endocrinology” by Nelson and Kriegsfeld 5th Ed.
