It's such a heated issue—and people on each side believe those who disagree with them are abusing children. In the last 10 years, we've witnessed an exponential increase in the number of kids who feel as if they're the wrong sex. Although Gender Dysphoria Disorder remains a psychiatric illness per the DSM-5-TR, it currently is viewed quite differently when compared to other mental conditions. We don't “affirm” Obsessive Compulsive Disorder or Bipolar or schizophrenia. We treat clients by providing coping mechanisms and helping them ground themselves in reality. But, we don't do this with Gender Dysphoria Disorder.  Why is this? Why do we abandon logic, reasoning, and science when addressing Gender Dysphoria? As a psychiatric nurse, David Wayne finds this confusing, frustrating, and appalling—especially as it pertains to the US's current approach to treating kids who decide they're actually the opposite sex.  Join us for an insider's take on what's really going on with gender “affirming” care.  Sponsors: Authentixx  Website: http://www.authentixx.com Code: LOVELIFE for 10% off your order! We started an occasional series a while ago called, “Empowered Evolving” in part, because I saw so much shifting all around us. Beliefs that had once been considered integral to folks with certain philosophical ideology, now seem to be embraced by those on the opposite side of things. Furthermore, over the last several years, we've witnessed the abolition of core American rights I thought we all valued.  Very strange times, indeed. I called the series, “Empowered Evolving” as a way to remind myself—and anyone else who might have been feeling unsettled, as I've felt over the last several years—that evolving IS empowered. We used to encourage people to question authority and do our own research and think for ourselves and ask for second, third, and fourth opinions. We warned each other to resist tribalism and group-think. Americans were pioneers, independent minded. We read Thorough's Civil Disobedience in high school and lived by Shakespeare's “To thine own self be true”  Naturally, when you live out such principles, you often evolve. Evolving can feel lonely. You may lose friends, your community, even your identity. This all happened to today's guest, former psychiatric nurse turned holistic health coach, Dave Wayne. On episode 457 of The Nurse Keith Show nursing and healthcare career podcast, Keith welcomes back psychiatric nurse practitioner Claire Ellerbrock, DNP, APRN, PMHNP. In the course of their conversation, Keith and Claire discuss the common challenges faced by new psych NPs, what Ms. Ellerbrock loves most about this particular role, what psych NP students fail to learn during their education, and how her services support these newly minted providers in thriving in life and professional practice. Claire Ellerbrock is a psychiatric nurse practitioner in Columbus, Ohio. Claire found that while her graduate program provided her with a degree to practice, she could have benefited from more clinical guidance to confidently enter practice treating complex patients. This realization led her to create Stress Free Psych NP, an online educational platform that guides both new and experienced psychiatric and family nurse practitioners to more confidently and competently treat their patients with mental health needs. Claire's flagship course, the Mental Disorders Crash Course, helps providers to more effectively diagnose and treat the most important mental disorders commonly encountered in practice. Her vision is to help empower all nurse practitioners with the knowledge needed to not only excel in practice, but do so with less stress along the way. Passionate about health equity and providing quality mental health care to marginalized and under-served populations, Claire received her DNP from Kent State University, MSN from Case Western Reserve University, and BA in Psychology from Washington University in St Louis. In the introduction to this episode, I mention the financial bum rush of companies providing mental health apps to clients, patients and customers. Still working on that tact thing.   There is a small but growing segment of entrepreneurs that see gold in them there mental health hills.   Some of those entrepreneurs have honest intentions about making mental health accessible. They have hired psychologists and psychiatrists to help shape their product.   Others vendors are more focused on building chat bots that provide rote services that can be sold to businesses.   Probably as a checkbox for saying "Hey, we have provided this mental health gizmo, saves you money and that will allow you as business person to give us money. Win-Win."   But sometimes, you need a living licensed professional that will meet with you and your problems.   HMO doctors ain't got the time or the training for that kind of service.   Psychologists will talk to you but cannot provide medication treatment or management. Psychiatrists are in short supply. Many are ageing out of the profession. Those that haven't are either booked solid or priced out of the range of most people.   There is another option. Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners. That is the topics of this episode.   In the episode, I mentioned that I was going to post an image or maybe a video about accessing the two psychiatric nurse search engines.    I'll figure something out. If you need support contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 988 or 1-800-273-8255, the Trevor Project at 1-866-488-7386 or text “START” to 741-741. Resources Mentioned:  Association of American Medical Colleges post about the psychiatrist shortage.   The Myth of Normal, Trauma, Illness & Healing in A Toxic Culture by Gabor Mate, M.D. with Daniel Mate. Published by Avery Books, an imprint of Penguin Random House.     I also recommend that you check out a video that he talks a bit more about the myth of normal.   American Psychiatric Nurse Association page About Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing   Nurse Journal page on What to Know About Seeing a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner   The American Association of Nurse Practitioners web site has a Find a Nurse Practitioner search engine for those practitioners.      Psychology Today has a therapist search engine. It also is a little fiddly but you can use it to locate psychiatric nurse practitioners.   Disclaimer:  Links to other sites are provided for information purposes only and do not constitute endorsements.  Always seek the advice of a qualified health provider with questions you may have regarding a medical or mental health disorder. CRAZYYY how life works out right?! Liz and I met so briefly at Dr. Joe Dispenza's Advanced meditation retreat in Cancun and it wasn't until she saw an interview of me on Dr. Joe's IG page that we actually got connected!! You can't make this up! Liz was a psychiatric nurse for 15 years in NYC, a writer, script consultant and now the Head of Health and Safety on film and TV sets. She shares her incredible health & professional journey with us! Also for the record this conversation is in no way sponsored hahaha we just both love Dr. Joe's work and have had such an incredible impact from doing his meditations (if you haven't checked him out by now please do). Liz has an incredible health story as she fully recovered from appendix cancer over the course of 9 years of being sick and was even told that she would never eat solid food ever again after one of her surgeries...until she did after she DECIDED she was going to. Her story goes so much deeper than that so give this interview a listen and see how she healed by deciding not to focus on the cancer and start focusing on her health. This lead her down a path of trying to make sense of what she was doing and how she was actually healing...everyone asked her "what are you doing??" she was even in a clinical study after spontaneously healing to see if they could figure out what happened! She found Dr. Joe's work within this process of learning about epigenetics and felt so relieved that there was evidence of your thoughts literally being able to heal you. As always...take what resonates from these episodes and use your own personal autonomy. This is not medical advice in the podcast. Today's show features a guest that can give us some perspective on the current climate around two important topics: abortion and postpartum depression. She's a psychiatric nurse practitioner, who experienced an abortion in the 1970s and peripartum and postpartum depression in the 1990s. She's written about her experience. In a piece, titled “No Stranger”. Here are some excerpts from her writing. First, she writes:“How do you know?” the patient might ask. I lean forward a bit in myoffice chair, a magic mix of science and empathy, or so I would like tothink. The woman sitting across from me may be dabbing at her eyeswith her fingers. If her nails are chewed to bloody shreds, I will fold myown more tightly in my lap.“I've been a nurse practitioner for a long time,” I will say. “Morewomen than you think go through this. It's hormonal…”And a little later in the piece she writes:Early on I figured that postpartum depression wasa risk for me, but expected I could balance my emotional happiness andstability against my physiological tendency towards clinical depression,if I was ever so lucky as to get pregnant. And besides, I was aprofessional. With training and resources. So here's the thing with training and resources: Depression robsyou of the clarity to use any of those skills or supports.Let's get to her storyFor extended show notes, see: https://warstoriesfromthewomb.com/

In this episode I'm joined by my own psychiatric nurse practitioner Cecelia Howard PMHNP to talk in detail about the tricky subject of mental health medications. It's an area that still carries a ton of stigma, and it's a serious matter to go down the road of taking antidepressants, mood stabilizers or other psychiatric meds. We use my own very positive experience of working with Cecelia and taking a couple of different drugs (A mood stabilizer called Lamotrigine and an SNRI antidepressant called Pristiq) to highlight her unique approach to working with patients. We talk about her lengthy intake process which includes using DNA testing to assess what medications a patient might need. We cover how to know when you might need meds, why you should avoid any practitioner who writes you a prescription after a 15min consultation, and how to get off meds in the right way at the right time. There are quite a lot of scientific terms used so here are some links if you are not familiar with some of the neuroscience behind this. Neurotransmitter Overview.
