There's a common perception that if you wish to pursue academia and tenure, then you need to solely focus on institutional work. Today I'm speaking with Dr. Bukola Salami, an Associate Professor of Nursing and Director of the Intersections of Gender Program at the University of Alberta, who is living proof that that isn't the only way. Dr. Salami received her Ph.D. in nursing from the University of Toronto, where she studied the experiences of Filipino migrants, who work as caregivers in Canada. In her short career, Dr. Salami has established a robust program of research that intersects Immigrant Health and Workforce Mobility, Black Canadian Health and Well-being, Immigrant Mental Health, Nurse Mobility, and COVID vaccine hesitancy. In this episode, Dr. Salami first outlines her doctoral journey and its valuable work on the intersection of immigration experiences and workforce development, before imparting her top tips for graduate students and new faculty members when navigating the politics of an academic department. Hear her recommendations for collaborating with other scholars to increase publication, as well as how to develop a program of research to advance your career. This episode is overflowing with hard-won and discerning advice for those already in academia or wishing to begin with the right footing; we hope you join us today!Connect with Dr. Salami on Twitter and LinkedIn. Our episode today covers a debilitating and life-threatening condition that disproportionately affects those in developing countries around the world. Affecting more than 150,000 people annually, Noma is a fatal infection of the face and mouth with the mortality rate approaching more than 90 percent and the morbidity/sequelae are permanently debilitating. Noma is a result of acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis (infection of the gums) which can rapidly spread and destroy other facial tissues. This can lead to struggles with eating, talking, and even breathing for affected individuals - if they even survive. Not only does this affect their activities of daily living, but it also affects their social interactions; often becoming shunned or excluded from societies and families due to the severely disfiguring and unpleasant aftermath. Further, the social and economic deprivation and political insecurity are staggering. A simple internet search before this episode will put the condition in context. Despite the high fatality rate and crippling aftermath, noma is a sorely neglected disease that can be prevented with multidisciplinary treatment. Join us in this episode as we speak with Dr. Bukola Oluyide and Charity Kamau as we discuss Noma as a condition, efforts that are being done to tackle it, and the sociological/anthropological aspects that remain following disease in its many forms.

Guest Jason Polites joins Stephanie Wong and Bukola Ayodele this week to talk about advances in serverless computing with Cloud Run and how developers and wallets are benefiting. Cloud Run, a managed service which allows developers to run containers, is now available in all GCP regions, offers increased resource access, global load balancing, and more. Jason tells us how this evolution of Cloud Run has led to the support of bigger, more complicated, and even legacy software fully and efficiently functioning in a serverless environment. The team at Google continues to expand offerings in order to afford the benefits of auto-scaling and other managed services to all workloads. Always On CPU, for example, supports projects with running background functions. Later, Jason gives us examples of projects that best fit a serverless infrastructure and the cost benefits of using Cloud Run. He offers cost-saving tips for projects, like committed use discounts and auto-scaling limits. Balancing cost efficiency with global reliability is important, and Jason tells us how this is easily achieved with Cloud Run features like scaling to zero. To limit the barrier to entry for new Cloud Run and container users, Jason and his team have been working on open source build packs. Developers can turn code into a container without creating Docker files. The containers running in Cloud Run are highly portable as well, giving companies the freedom to move their containers freely. Jason Polites Jason leads the Serverless Compute product team in Google Cloud, including products like Cloud Run and App Engine. Mark Mirchandani is back this week with cohost Bukola Ayodele. We’re talking with Eric Schmidt and Bruno Aziza about all the awesome new analytics, data, and AI launches from last week’s Google Cloud Next conference. Our guests start the show outlining the challenges clients face when storing, organizing, and analyzing data in the cloud. These needs have inspired Google solutions that focus on simplifying data management for customers. Next announcements like BigQuery Omni, which helps customers achieve full data visibility with cross-cloud analytics, and DataPlex, which facilitates data management at scale, will change the way companies think about their data. This week on the podcast, hosts Stephanie Wong and Bukola Ayodele speak with Nikhil Kaul and Victor Szalvay about security in the software supply chain. Cloud OnAir will be offering a virtual event on supply chain software security on July 29th, and our guests start the show by telling us more about it. The recent cyber attacks on US companies have brought to light the importance of cyber security. A new set of guidelines for securing these components and software as a whole will be released soon, impacting not just software developers but the users as well. The Cloud OnAir event will breakdown these new guidelines and educate attendees on steps to take to ensure more secure software and software components. Internally, Google has been optimizing their software supply chain security for years with solutions like BeyondCorp and internally developed solutions that Google has since adapted for their clients. These solutions will be discussed in detail in the Cloud OnAir event. Victor goes on to explain the three areas of supply chain security and how they fit into the overall security of online platforms. Software projects are often built using many small pieces of software sourced from third parties, which can create vulnerabilities. The new guidelines will help ensure quality and security at all levels of development for software and its pieces, thus strengthening security at every level of the supply chain. Nikhil and Victor talk about issues that contribute to supply chain security, including the risks that a microservices architecture can introduce and the use of open source software and their dependencies. We hear about Google’s contributions to the supply chain security effort, like OpenSSF that strives to bring the open source community together toward the goal of cyber security. Our guests give listeners tips on starting the supply chain security journey. Join the Cloud OnAir talk to learn more! The one about life after losing a loved one. Grief /gri:f/ : An intense sorrow, especially caused by someone's death. Research suggests that we have a 100% chance of dying. Sarcasm aside, there's a high chance 1 of 2 people reading this have said the words “I'm sorry for your loss” at some point. Even worse, there's also a chance some of you reading this have had those words said to you, especially after the loss of a loved one. Grief is often not the topic of conversation on any random day. But for those who experience it, it never truly leaves their minds, even on those random days. When you lose someone close to you, your life and identity as you know it changes. There's a new normal. We want to thank Ade and Bukola for joining us and co-creating a safe space to have this 100-minute conversation about grief and share their experiences about all of the above and more. They showed us courage, truth, patience, and much more. We can't thank them enough. To everyone who has lost a loved one, whether recently or a long time ago, please remember grief has no expiry date and we pray you find strength not to move on, but to keep moving forward as you live with your loss. ❤️ . . . How to succeed in the food and beverage space
On today's edition of The Aid Station we travel to Lagos, Nigeria to meet Bukola Olopade, CEO of Nilayo Sports Management Limited & Access Bank Lagos City Marathon. He shares the extreme challenges of life for people in Nigeria under the COVID-19 including his own hospitalisation for three weeks with the virus. "Many people in Nigeria live from hand to mouth so if they do not work there is no money to make their soup at night." "The heroes for me are the doctors, nurses and domestic people who looked after me and the ability to look at things and say 'together we can conquer' which has really epitomised the attitude and changed my views about the way we do things in this country" Listen for his story of the immense impact of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon and the trail-blazing role he has played in creating an event with over 75,000 participants. Bukola shares an interesting take on leadership taught to him by his Mum. It embodies the importance of giving young people the opportunity to lead and is reflected in his organisation which is filled with young, bright, passionate people blazing a path which embraces the digital age.
