He has worked for several top advertising agencies, and his strategies and creative contributions have led to the success of Budweiser's Made in America music festival, the launch of the Brooklyn Nets (“Hello Brooklyn!”), and State Farm's “Cliff Paul” campaign, among others. Prior to his advertising tenure, Marcus worked on iTunes + Nike sport music initiatives at Apple and ran digital strategy for Beyoncé. Marcus delivers keynote talks across the globe for companies and conferences such as the Cannes Lions International Festival for Creativity, SXSW, Social Media Week, Adcolor, Hyper Island, TEDx, and Talks at Google. He is the author of For the Culture: The Power Behind What We Buy, What We Do, and Who We Want to Be*. Whether you're in a sales and marketing role or not, every leader needs to appreciate the psychology of why people buy. Often we assume people buy because of what the product or service provides. But as Marcus and I discuss in this episode, people often buy because of who they are. Key Points For getting people to move, nothing is more powerful than aligning with culture. Anaïs Nin said, “We don't see things as they are, we see them as we are.” Audiences buy because of what the product is, but congregations buy because of who they are. Many leaders assume people love their brand -- but it's not really about the brand, it's about how people view themselves. Begin with examining your own thinking and language regarding customer relationships and transactions. How you view these influences the actions of others. My fellow neuro-divers,Joanna and I are thrilled to give you the first episode of NeuroDiving, "A Productive Irritant."You can find a transcript of the episode here. I know that you all are itching for that sweet, sweet "theory of mind" content. It's coming next week! But in this first episode, we give you some crucial background for what's to come.“A Productive Irritant”Dr. Chloe Farahar (she/they) is an Autistic academic, and an astute observer of current tensions in autism research. Along with many other Autistic people, Chloe is challenging the foundations of mainstream autism research--and she has a vision for how autism research could be so much better.Topics Discussed* The importance of focusing on the practical applications of research (00:45, 09:25)* Why Chloe thinks "autism" doesn't exist (but Autistic people definitely exist) (01:20)* The challenge of being autistic and disabled in academia (03:35)* The two main camps in autism research: mainstream and autistic-led (06:19)* Tensions between autism researchers and the Autistic community (10:14)* Spectrum 10K (12:26)* Why we can't simply “follow the science” (16:06)* Why autism researchers need to be honest about their values (17:20)* Philosophy! (18:35)* Theory of mind look-ahead (19:04)* How autism research can improve (20:38)Resources Mentioned* For more about the OG productive irritant in the field of autism research, the late great Dinah Murray: https://monotropism.org/dinah/* I love that Dinah Murray and Chloe Farahar refer to themselves as “productive irritants.” They're real-life gadflies!* In Plato's Apology, Socrates defends himself against the charges of the Athenian state using a gadfly analogy. From 30e-31a: “For if you kill me you will not easily find another like me, who, if I may use such a ludicrous figure of speech, am a sort of gadfly, given to the state by the divine; and the state is like a great and noble steed who is tardy in his motions owing to his very size, and requires to be stirred into life. I am that gadfly which the divine has given the state and all day long and in all places am always fastening upon you, awakening and persuading and reproaching you. And as you will not easily find another like me, I would advise you to spare me. I dare say that you may feel irritated at being suddenly awakened when you are caught napping; and you may think that if you were to strike me dead, as Anytus advises, which you easily might, then you would sleep on for the remainder of your lives, unless the divine in his care of you gives you another gadfly.” For a translation of the Apology, see: https://classics.mit.edu/Plato/apology.html* Aucademy: https://aucademy.co.uk/ * The National Autism Trainer Program: https://www.annafreud.org/training/health-and-social-care/national-autism-trainer-programme/* Example of autism research being described as "a field in crisis," featuring none other than Dr. Chloe! * Spectrum 10K: https://spectrum10k.org/* Stop Spectrum 10K: https://www.change.org/p/university-of-cambridge-stop-spectrum-10kCreditsHost: Amelia HicksGuest: Dr. Chloe FaraharResearch, Fact-Checking, and Script Editing: Amelia Hicks and Joanna LawsonAudio Production: Amelia HicksMusic: Amelia HicksEven More Thank-YousA huge thank-you to Chloe Farahar for speaking with me about the current state of “autism” research! And thanks to the Marc Sanders Foundation and the Templeton Foundation for their support of the show. Jeffrey Bellomo decided to specialize in estate planning and elder law because of a health crisis in his own family. He discusses how that difficult situation motivated him to make sure that what happened to his family does not happen to others. Today, members of the Bellomo team emphasize client education, fair billing practices, and proven systems and processes to ensure a predictable yet personalized client experience. It's how they create outcomes that protect the personal and financial freedom of their client families. Key Takeaways  Takeaway 1: Jeff's mother became ill, and it was eye-opening - 01:39 Jeff's family lacked knowledge of estate planning and elder law. They did not have a good experience trying to care for the personal and financial well-being of his mother and the family. He vowed to specialize in this area of law and committed himself to fair billing practices and client education. Takeaway 2: Bellomo & Associates developed a better way – 08:07  After launching Bellomo & Associates, Jeff founded “Lawyers with Purpose” to provide law firms with an education-based model of operation that results in predictable yet personalized experiences and outcomes for clients. The model features repeatable systems and practices, including free workshops and consultations for clients. This approach helps the Bellomo team get to know the client, understand their needs/goals, and learn what's important to them. The client, in turn, learns the key concepts of estate planning and elder law, along with details of plans and pricing, so that they can make informed decisions aligned with their needs and goals. Working together, the Bellomo team and the client create a personalized, no-surprises plan to protect the family into the future.  Takeaway 3: Estate planning ahead of time is best, but we're prepared to help with the unexpected crisis – 15:25  Our Medicaid Crisis Workshop is conducted on demand and can be attended online. Call us or make contact via our website. We're also prepared for unexpected probate or trust administration when needed. (See Episode 11: Probate v. Non-Probate Assets)  Takeaway 4: Bellomo & Associates offers a range of services to meet specific challenges - 20:04 Services can be divided into three major categories: estate planning, probate, and Medicaid. Clients with special medical needs are part of the estate planning category but also have special planning needs. It's crucial to develop a plan tailored to the individual. (See Episode 6: Special Needs Trusts) With the low-cost maintenance program, long-term clients can keep their plans updated as their needs change and/or the law changes. The 20+ member Bellomo team is very proud of what they have built. There are so many founders and companies around the world with incredible potential, but they may find it difficult to become successful if they can't penetrate the US market. With so much knowledge, creativity, and innovation to offer, it would be a shame to keep them confined in a limited market. In this episode, our host Kathi Sharpe-Ross discusses the opportunities and barriers in scaling businesses based outside the US and building bridges to different markets with Lee Moser and Roy Geva Glasberg. They also share how AnD Ventures works to build the ecosystem around them and create an impact. Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation: Having a partner on the ground is essential in scaling a business. Investing right will open the door to more opportunities and help you overcome difficulties. The medical, education, crypto, and metaverse fields will most likely undergo significant changes in the coming years. [07:33] Dealing with Borders Everything has become more easily accessible and scalable, but it's still difficult to find investors for Israeli-based companies. Having a partner on the ground who can help you understand the culture and market often makes the difference between success and failure. [24:04] Helping Founders Scale Lee and Roy's business model prioritizes supporting their founders. They work with companies that are making an impact. It's impossible to have enough money to bring the exact expertise you need for every startup that you want to work with so Lee and Roy allow founders to build their portfolios through their platforms. [27:16] The Impact of COVID Despite COVID, Lee and Roy were able to gradually build their business and ensure they were capable of supporting companies. If you invest properly, more opportunities will open up for you. The startup world is currently full of opportunities, but also difficulties in growth. [31:23] Emerging Lifestyle Trends The medical care and education fields will undergo the most changes in the near future. The pandemic made it clear that online methods are more efficient than physical interactions in these fields. Cryptocurrency and the metaverse can also bring significant changes, but they're currently unregulated and need time to mature. Getting older is a tricky double-edged sword, especially in the workplace. While being tenured is proof that we've solidified our expertise through experience, there is also the looming fear of aging out of our jobs. But now more than ever, the workplace calls for experienced leadership. In this solo episode, our host Kathi Sharpe-Ross delves into the growing need for Reinvention in the current hybrid workspace. Listen as Kathi explains how embracing the era of “Aging In,” an expression she has coined, opens up endless opportunities for growth in companies. Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation: Recognize that the current era of hybrid working requires experienced leadership. Open up opportunities by embracing the concept of “Aging In” in the workplace. Adopt the mindset of “Aging In” instead of aging out of companies. [0:58] The Process of Reinvention in the Hybrid Workplace More companies, brands, and agencies are creating opportunities to work in a hybrid environment. With all the complexities involved in this process, effective leadership is fundamental. It calls for experienced leaders with years of exposure to a multitude of management to step up. [02:19] The Impact of “Aging In” in the Hybrid Setup “Aging in” is the polar opposite of the fear of getting older and getting aged out of a company. There has been no better time in history to respect and consider the value older people offer in the workforce. Remote and hybrid companies need this “adult supervision”. As older employees have been in the workforce longer, they have greater skillsets to help navigate working in a hybrid setup. [04:39] The Era of Aging In More and more companies are requiring senior leadership roles to ensure everything is cohesively running on track. In fact, the labor force of people aged 75 years and older is projected to grow by 96.5% over the next decade. We're now in the era of aging in.
