Welcome back to our “Beasts” Double Bill! Last time, we watched "The Dummy" from the infamous anthology series by General Witchfinders hero Nigel Kneale. We now leave the smashed-up movie set of "The Dummy" with its snarling Y-fronts-wearing jilted actor and join Angie and Roger Truscott in their secluded Hampshire home for "During Barty's Party." This episode features the only actual 'beasts' as the main threat: in this case, large, super-evolved, intelligent rats. Elizabeth Sellars plays Angie Truscott, known for "The Mummy's Shroud," and Anthony Bate plays Roger Truscott, heavily channeling Michael Bryant's Peter Brock character from "The Stone Tape." Bate was cast as Doctor Fendehman in "Image of the Fendahl" but dropped out, with Denis Lill taking the role. Colin Bell plays Barty Wills, the local DJ hosting the titular "Barty's Party," his regular rock and roll radio show. Like the rest of the cast, Bell is only heard, not seen. He is seen, however, in "The Sea Devils" and "Invasion of the Dinosaurs," both Jon Pertwee stories. Norman Mitchell plays the Police Sergeant. Supposedly, at 18, Mitchell walked from Sheffield to London to become an actor, leading to nearly 200 film appearances, 500 radio broadcasts, and an estimated 2,000 television appearances. He developed a niche of playing policemen, appearing as such in 12 episodes of "Worzel Gummidge," "Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell" (more on this very soon), "And Now the Screaming Starts!", "Oliver!" and the first Doctor Who Christmas episode, "The Feast of Steven." John Rhys-Davies plays Peter Newell. Famous for his parts in Lord of the Rings and Raiders of the Lost Ark. Rhys-Daviesis a supporter of the British Conservative Party, Rhys-Davies was a radical leftist in the '60s, who tried to heckle a young Tory MP. But the parliamentarian "shot down the first two hecklers in such brilliant fashion that I decided I ought for once to shut up and listen". The MP was Margaret Thatcher. He is a supporter of Brexit. On 25 April 2019, he appeared as a panellist on the BBC's Question Time. His conduct on the programme towards politician Caroline Lucas was later described as "thuggish and sexist" by some viewers. In this episode, Sahar Zand goes back to speak to Brian Glendinning about his experience in Iraqi jail, and the harrowing impact of his unforeseen arrest. But Brian, compared to some people, is still lucky. For dissidents and opposition figures around the world, the Red Notice is the latest tool for transnational repression by autocratic governments. These people often end up in prison indefinitely, or extradited to the countries they had long fled for safety. With expert analysis from Rhys Davies and Ben Keith - authors of Red Notice Monitor - we take a look at the worst case scenarios for being on the wrong end of a Red Notice.Sahar meets Zeynure and her three children. They are Uyghur exiles living in Istanbul. Zeynure's husband, Idris Hasan, has been in prison in Morocco for two years facing extradition to China. Uyghur activists like Idris are increasingly at risk of Red Notices, experts tell us, as China has increased its use of Interpol as a tool of transnational repression. Sahar talks to Idris, who says this Red Notice has been a death sentence. A potential return to China is “worse than death.”Plus, Alicia Kearns, the Conservative MP who chairs the UK Parliament's Foreign Affairs Select Committee, tells Dirty Work about the committee's “grave concerns” over how the system works. She calls on the Home Office to find a way to inform British nationals if they're the subject of a malicious red notice.WARNING: This episode contains strong language. Is there a more iconic Harrison Ford role than Indiana Jones, the bullwhip-snapping, fedora-clad, globe-trotting archeologist who fights Nazis and pillages artifacts from their cultures of origin, which was the style at the time? It can be difficult to step back from this movie's cultural primacy and just watch it as a movie. When you do, it's an adventuresome thrill ride, impeccably made, as Indy and his pal's zip from one precarious encounter to another. Part of the charm is Harrison Ford's portrayal of Indiana Jones, toeing the line between heroic and roguish, and - unlike modern action stars - often surprised by the peril in which he finds himself and occasionally in danger of getting badly injured or even dead. But is Indiana Jones, as a character, the hero we are led to believe? Or is he, as Hemal maintains, "like every bad boyfriend you've ever had"? In this episode, Hemal and Brian also interrogate the ideological valence of the film, from the troubling way in which Marion Ravenwood, the movie's sole woman character (played with delightful grit and humor by the underrated Karen Allen) is portrayed and treated, to the questionable choice of having the film's Egyptian and Nepali characters played by white guys - including John Rhys-Davies, noted Welshman, as Indy's loyal and resourceful sidekick Sallah Mohammed Faisel el-Kahir. Though it must be admitted, we also thoroughly enjoyed Rhys-Davies in the role. Do we contradict ourselves? Very well then, we contradict ourselves. We are large, we contain multitudes.

Many times in Golf (love & life!) we hear people talk about “The One that got away”, like in episode #3 of this podcast with Mike Hearne and his infamous “Tiger King” podcast. In this episode though, I share with you a podcast with Welsh Golf Professional Alastair Jones that should have got away but didn't! For a long time, many fellow golfers told me that Alastair couldn't be reached and wasn't available for any podcast interviews and this caused quite a bit of intrigue given his fame. After calling in a lead from an old contact (thanks Dad!) I was able to get in touch with Alastair and he shared his story with me and also told me about one colossal match that also "didn't get away" from him! I finally reached Alastair, in Dallas, Texas (USA), where he is currently attached to one of the most exclusive Golf Clubs in the World - the Preston Trail Golf Club. The Club is famous for being Byron Nelson' s home club, as well as hosting the Byron Nelson Classic PGA tournament from 1968- 1982, this was a true golden era of golf, seeing the likes of Niklaus, Palmer, Player & Watson. Former president George Bush is also one of the most distinguished members along with many other famous Americans including many famous golfers, hockey players and other sports stars and celebrities. Alastair's father, Ron Jones, was a well known sports journalist in Wales and he introduced Alastair to the game at Radyr Golf Club in Cardiff (UK) and they started playing together. Later on, Alastair also joined my home course Royal Porthcawl (South Wales, UK), which gave him the experience of playing a top links course and this would really prepare him later on for a career run in the British Amateur, as well as claiming the Welsh crown at Tenby. With Royal Porthcawl being a Senior Open Championship venue, Alastair tells me he has had some great conversations with many pros in America, regarding how great a course Royal Porthcawl is! Royal Porthcawl is regarded as the best Golf Course in Wales and is a top 50 course in the UK. Alastair won the Club Championship there, which is no mean feat, following in the footsteps of great players such as John Jermine and Rhys Davies. In 2010, Alastair would go on to achieve a feat that no other Welsh player ever had, in winning the Welsh Youth's and Welsh Amateur Championships in the same year. Alastair shares with me how he achieved a remarkable second place finish in the 2011 British Amateur Qualifying around Hillside and Hesketh and the story of his titanic matchplay battle with Findland's Toni Hakula in 2011, Hakula was also a British Amateur finalist in 2013. #alastairjonesgolf #golf #golfingtales #holinonegolfpodcast #golfpodcast https://www.walesonline.co.uk/sport/other-sport/golf/golf-alastair-jones-makes-history-1900836 https://www.dmagazine.com/publications/d-ceo/2014/november/the-most-exclusive-private-dallas-clubs/ https://golfhistorytoday.com/1975-tom-watson-byron-nelson-classic/ https://www.walesonline.co.uk/sport/other-sport/golf/golf-alastair-jones-enjoys-success-1929048.amp https://txstatebobcats.com/sports/mens-golf/roster/alastair-jones/2433

Joining me is an old friend and former Glamorgan team mate Llewellyn Matthews from Southerndown Golf Club (Wales, UK). Llew is regarded as one of Wales' greatest ever Amateur Golfers, having won the Welsh Amateur title back to back in 2006 and again in 2007, the first player to achieve this since the legendary JR Jones (Langland Bay) in the mid 1980s. He tells me how he quickly rose through the ranks at Southerndown Golf Club where there was a large & highly competitive junior section. He learnt from the senior mentors around him and leveraged rivalries with fellow juniors, playing up to 54 holes a day. Llewellyn really got into his Tournament Golf career at the famous “Duncan Putter” Tournament, held annually at his home club Southerndown GC, aged 16, being fortunate to watch many great GB & I Walker Cup players such as Simon Dyson and Gary Wolstenholme MBE. Southerndown is a superb links Golf Course in South Wales (UK), laid out in 1905 and then redesigned in 1918 by the famous course designer Harry Shapland Colt. His job was to make it play easier! https://www.southerndowngolfclub.com/…/course-history-colts… Late in 2005, Llewellyn won his first professional tournament as an amateur, at a local event at St. Pierre golf club, winning by a remarkable 7 shots. Llewellyn would then rise to prominence on the World Stage by winning the qualifying at the 2006 British Amateur at Royal St George's and reaching the final 16 after beating Richie Ramsay in the first round (Richie went on to win the US Amateur that year). Later that summer, he narrowly edged his good friend Rhys Davies on the 36th green around Pyle and Kenfig to take his first Welsh Amateur title. Llewellyn won the 2007 St. Andrews Links Trophy, sealing his biggest tournament win, smashing the tournament record with a total of 273, -15 under over 4 rounds and setting his sights on British Open qualification. On arrival at Monifieth, he discovered 200 players going for 3 spots but he seized his chance to grab 1 of the spots at the 136th Open Championship where Padraig Harrington would go on to win his first major, after beating Sergio Garcia in a playoff. Llewellyn enjoyed a practice round with US Open Champion Angel Cabrera. He was then drawn with future World Number One Luke Donald and Charles Howell III. After winning his second Welsh Amateur title in 2007, he earnt a highly coveted spot on the 41st Walker Cup Team, held at Royal County Down in Northern Ireland. The 2007 Walker Cup Team on both sides would go down in retrospect as perhaps the strongest sides of all time, featuring players such as Rory Mc Ilroy, Dustin Johnson, Webb Simpson, Ricky Fowler and Danny Willet. The BreakPoint Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 18, 2020 4:21

Last week, actor John Rhys-Davies, best known for playing the dwarf Gimli in “The Lord of the Rings” films, gave a strong defense for Christianity.          Speaking to the Christian Post from the red carpet at the Movieguide awards, Rhys-Davies said, “We seem to forget that Christian civilization has made the world a better place… We owe Christianity the greatest debt of thanks that a generation can ever have...” he went on, crediting it for the ideas of religious liberty, free speech, and individual rights.          Rhys-Davies, who recently starred in an animated adaptation of “Pilgrim's Progress” and is the lead in an upcoming biopic of Saint Patrick, said he often finds himself sticking up for Jesus in his line of work.          The strange part of this story is that Rhys-Davies is a self-professed “rationalist and a skeptic,” not a Christian. Yet he is still able to see how the faith of Christ's Church, as author Alvin J. Schmidt puts it, “changed the world” for the better.          Rhys-Davis is just one of many skeptics, atheists, and secularists of late who reject the rhetoric of Richard Dawkins and Sam Harris and recognize the immense good the Gospel has done for the world. Whereas the so-called New Atheists slandered Christianity as being backward and poisonous, a new crop of unbelievers see it as beneficial, beautiful, and maybe even in some limited sense, true.          Take Douglas Murray, British journalist, political commentator, and author of the new book, “The Madness of Crowds.” Though a self-professed non-believer and gay man, Murray admits to admiring Christianity and “the positive role it has played in building Western civilization.” He even labels himself, somewhat tongue-in-cheek, a “Christian atheist.”          In a recent dialogue with Christian writer Esther O'Reilly on the “Unbelievable” podcast, Murray praised Christianity's “revolutionary moral insights” such as the command to “love and forgive your enemies.” “The more atheists think on these things,” he confessed, “the more we may have to accept that...the sanctity of human life is a Judeo-Christian notion which might very easily not survive [the demise of] Judeo-Christian civilization.”          But even more than recognizing Christianity's usefulness, Murray sees the faith as meaningful. Describing a trip he took last year to the Sea of Galilee, Murray admitted he couldn't stop thinking that, as he put it, “something happened here.”          Murray was one of several “Christ-haunted unbelievers” discussed on a recent BreakPoint Podcast conversation between Shane Morris and Esther O'Reilly.          In addition to her recent interaction with Murray, O'Reilly also contributed to an upcoming book about clinical psychologist Jordan Peterson, another who has articulated a strong respect for Christianity from the perspective on non-belief.          According to O'Reilly, skeptics admitting to the Christian faith's positive influence on history is only the headline of this story (although we'd be remiss to not include the recent book Dominion by Tom Holland as yet another example). O'Reilly thinks that under the surface, spiritual truth is being found too, much like the skeptics C. S. Lewis describes in the essay entitled “Myth Became Fact.”          Lewis, himself a convert from atheism, wrote, “A man who disbelieved the Christian story as fact but continually fed on it as myth would, perhaps, be more spiritually alive than the one who assented [to it as fact] and did not think much about it.”          With O'Reilly, we hope the flame of myth and meaning fans into full-blown belief, that they will come to see Christianity as “the place where the heart's deepest longings and deepest intuitions about what is good...connect(s) with the mind's deepest understanding [of what is true.]”          After all, no unbelief can survive that moment. Just ask C.S. Lewis.          Catch Shane Morris' conversation with Esther O'Reilly on the BreakPoint podcast.

Welcome to episode 71 of The All Seeing Guys. This episode we are joined by Gregs just turned Eighteen year old Godson, Rhys Davies. Our youngest ever guest brings a fresh perspective to our angry point of view on modern living as we dive into a few bizarre news stories. From fetishes, penis bleaching, people eating Tide laundry detergent to sex worker injuries and much more. We go in and let the conversation grab us by the wrists and drag us down some dark back streets. It's a real fun episode and Rhys fits in perfect as a third host rather than a guest.  We end with a new track from Greg and Joes hiphop alter egos... Dicerollers.
