Recently, I finished reading the book Designing Virtual Worlds by Richard Bartle. Made by the creator of MUD (widely considered to be the first MMO), it goes over best practices for creating a persistent, multiplayer experience. One thing I noticed about DVW right out the gate, however, is that it's pretty old — so old, in fact, that the book came out just one year (!) before World of Warcraft, the game now considered to be the ultimate template in MMO-crafting. This antiquity made me curious… just how much have MMOs changed? Dr Huu Kim Le is an Australian child analyst and psychiatrist, specialising in video game addiction. Based in South Australia, Kim can reach young and remote Australians across Australia thanks to telepsychiatry. Growing up as a gamer himself, he’s combined the two loves in his life — video games and medicine — and is an expert in the rapidly growing field of gaming addiction. In today’s episode, he discusses types of gaming disorders, insights into the type of gamer who is at risk, how gaming designers appeal to the types of personality traits that we each possess, how they use financial incentives to maximise gaming promotion and participation, and the potential inherent issues that can negatively impact children who are susceptible to addiction.   Key takeaways: In China, the government is imposing a curfew for children after 10 pm and restricting the number of hours they're allowed to play games. Richard Bartle, the first virtual world game designer came up with the 'Bartle Player Types': The Killer, The Achiever, the Socialiser, and the Explorer. Research from Singapore suggests that there is a relationship between social competence, anxiety, depression and video gaming time. According to the Interactive Games and Entertainment Association in Australia, female players are just as likely as their male counterparts to be playing video games. Girls are having more problems with their internet usage, even though boys are playing more video games, with the rise of social media addiction. Telehealth is a powerful medium to overcome physical barriers and limitations. It allows people across Australia to get access to help who otherwise wouldn't be able to receive help.   Resources and links: https://cgiclinic.com/ LinkedIn - Dr Huu Kim Le Game Quitters Website Call To Mind - Supporting people to find the right mental health solution for them, anytime, anywhere.   Connect: Listen to other episodes of Reimagining Healthcare Connect with Yianni Serpanos on LinkedIn Follow HealthTechX on LinkedIn Follow HealthTechX on Instagram Follow HealthTechX on Meetup

In this conversation with Dr. Richard Bartle, Mr. Wes Schantz and I discuss the creation of virtual worlds, the difference between playing and designing a game, and whether the goal of developing a better world, rather than simply bettering the world, is possible. Richard Allan Bartle, Ph.D., co-wrote the first virtual world, MUD ("Multi-User Dungeon"), in 1978, thus being at the forefront of the online gaming industry from its very inception. A former university lecturer in Artificial Intelligence, he is an influential writer on all aspects of virtual world design and development. As an independent consultant, he has worked with almost every major online gaming company in the U.K. and the U.S. over the past 20 years. Richard lives with his wife, Gail, and their two children, Jennifer and Madeleine, in a village just outside Colchester, England. He works in virtual worlds. Richard Bartle is best known for having co-written in 1978 the first virtual world, MUD (Multi-user dungeon), and for his 1996 Player Types model (killers, socializers, achievers, and explorers) which has seen widespread adoption by the MMO industry. His 2003 book, Designing Virtual Worlds, is the standard text on the subject, and he is an influential writer on all aspects of MMO design and development. In 2010, he was the first recipient of the prestigious GDCOnline Game Legend award.

This past week at the Alaska Society for Education (ASTE) conference in Anchorage, I met a whole lot of great people with interesting ideas about education. Two of those people were Nicole Fuerst and Matthew Turner, who collaborated on a set of presentations at ASTE exhibiting their experience with and the promise in using badges and gamification for K-12 education. Their practice, as well as their proposals, were grounded in the works of Sebastian Deterding and Richard Bartle, both of whom come up in the podcast.
