On our third Movie Night Dystopia episode, Forrest, Conan Neutron, Kristina Oakes, and Kt Baldassaro talk to filmmaker Jared Skolnick about Marc Caro & Jean-Pierre Jeunet's the City of Lost Children. The City of Lost Children is a fairy tale like surrealist black comedy about a mad scientist who kidnaps orphans in order to steal their dreams. Two years ago, on Movie Night Apocalypse, we talked to Jared and Kt about Caro-Jeunet's earlier film Delicatessen. The City of Lost Children stars Ron Perlman, who learned literally just enough French to say his lines, as well as Dominique Pinon, Daniel Emilfork, Jean-Claude Dreyfus, Cemetery Man's François Hadji-Lazaro, and Judith Vittet. #ronperlman #french #frenchcinema #surrealism #dreams #jeanpierre #marccaro #jeanpierrejeunet #amelie #filmpodcast #moviepodcast #horrormoviepodcast #cinema #frenchmovie #dystopian Jared's latest project is WOODFELLAS: While traveling to the countryside to 'deal with' an informant, three Boston mobsters run afoul of a murderous woodland cult. Cornered in a cabin, they must band together to survive a siege of zealots ready to make them their next sacrifice. Born in the '70s, raised in the '80s, and grew up in El Paso, Texas, Christopher was a troubled kid who needed an artistic outlet, He always loved watching Elvira, not for her physical attributes, but for the cheesy horror and sci-fi movies, she screened every week. Christopher started making home horror movies when he was 12 and was particularly interested in the special effects make-up side of filmmaking. "I was obsessed with Tom Savini and Stan Winston. And I loved directors like John Carpenter and Wes Craven." He's always leaned toward the darker, more experimental side of the arts. In the '90s, he formed an experimental band called The Fold, which was off to a hot start until drug use and alcohol abuse derailed those ambitions. For the past 11 years, he's owned a pizzeria in downtown El Paso. A silver lining to the pandemic was the rekindling of his love for filmmaking. Dada Noise is his first professional film project. He's currently writing a TV series called On Bloody Paths with Ingmar Koch and Mary Susan Applegate. Applegate wrote the music for the film Bend It Like Beckham. Marc Caro, the director from City of the Lost Children and Delicatessen, will direct a few episodes. And Christopher has a film in this year's Experimental Film Fest titled Dada Noise 2. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/experimentalfilmpodcast/support

EPISODE 141 - BRUNO DELBONNEL - Cinematographer Team Deakins has a great conversation with cinematographer, Bruno Delbonnel. He speaks about his experiences working with Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Marc Caro, on Amelie and Delicatessen, respectively. We learn about how he achieved the look on Amelie and how, in France, it was the first film to involve a DI, and how the digital workflow has changed. When he chooses a project, he is not looking for the challenges as much as discovering the director's vision and figuring out how to implement that. He also shares his experiences with working director Tim Burton. We speak of how he prepares his lighting and the importance of determining what you really need on a shoot and hearing what it is that production needs. It's not about compromise but about finding the right method. And, of course, we speak about The Darkest Hour and the look. Not an episode to miss!

Once more, Kalum from “The Rolistes Podcast” takes us to France with “Delicatessen” a post-apocalyptic dark comedy from 1991 by Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Marc Caro. As a reminder, for Film Studies, members of the Network sometimes joined by non-Network guests, will review a film and discuss ways it could inspire tabletop RPG adventures, characters or practices. Our competent academic team is completed by Bianca from “The Broadswords” and Scott from “Lawful & Orderly”. Tabletop RPG settings systems and setting mentioned included: “Fantaji Universal Role-Playing Game” by Anthropos Games, “Monster of the Week” by Evil Hat Productions, “Dread” by The Impossible Dream, “Dungeon Crawl Classics” by Goodman Games, “Star Wars - The Roleplaying Game” by West End Games and its “Darkstryder Campaign”, as well as “Curse of Stradh” by Wizards of the Coast. The next film in our curriculum will be Neil Jordan‘s “High Spirits” from 1988. Let us know ahead of the recording about if this one inspired you some tabletop RPG adventures and maybe we will discuss it on the show. This new series is still in its early stages and we are still fiddling with the format. Please send us your feedback so we can fine tune it for your enjoyment, to tell us about your own experience with the movies discussed or even suggest films you would like us to cover in future episodes. Its not everyday that we watch a film that is strikingly different than cinema on the whole, but this beautiful, dark, twisted, French fantasy really is something to behold. Equal parts Laika, Tim Burton, Terry Gilliam, and German Expressionism, Marc Caro and Jean Pierre-Jeunet take us somewhere that can only exist in dreams or nightmares […]

Episode 027 of Berk Reviews Movie Club features the Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Marc Caro directed film Delicatessen from 1991. Corey really enjoyed this movie on her previous viewings, but Jonathan had never seen it. Considering this podcast had already watched Jeunet's Alien: Resurrection and Amelie it made sense to check this one out as well. Delicatessen stars Marie-Laure Dougnac, Dominique Pinon, and Pascal Benezech. Next Week - Episode 028 - XX (2017) If you've listened to Top Five Movies over the last year, you've probably heard Corey discuss her affinity for anthology movies. XX (2017) has four female directors: Roxanne Benjamin; Karyn Kusama; St. Vincent (Annie Clark); and Jovanka Vuckovic. The film is comprised of four short horror films and is currently available to stream on Netflix. Submit your comments or reviews of the film prior to the recording of episode 028 for your chance to have them read on the podcast. With influences ranging from Chaplin and Fellini to Rube Goldberg and Terry Gilliam, DELICATESSEN by Jean-Pierre Jeunet and occasional co-director Marc Caro defies easy summary. Maybe you'd better just give it a try? Set in a single apartment building in a dystopic future France, Jeunet et Caro imagine a world of hidden connections, quiet desperations, quirky comedy, light-hearted cannibalism, and a roster of peculiar residents whose dependence on their barbarous landlord-butcher is challenged by an erstwhile clown still mourning the tragic death of his chimpanzee partner. Also on this episode, we discuss the directors' famous feature follow-ups, little-known earlier short films, other movies set in just one location, and the discreet charm of Dominique Pinon.  DELICATESSEN links  IMDb ◇ Wikipedia ◇ AV Club ◇ 366 Weird Movies ◇ "The Bunker of the Last Gunshots" ◇ "Foutaises" ◇ "Charcuterie Fine" Enter The Void links  iTunes ◇ Tumblr ◇ Facebook ◇ Spotify ◇ @enterthepod We did good? We love doing our Listener’s Choice episodes — it’s a great way for our listeners to get us to finally talk about movies about which conversations are long overdue. Cameron Ryan, our 2014 Pony Prize winner, got to pick the movie this time, and ended up picking the fantastic black comedy “Delicatessen,” a movie that we both love but for whatever reason just hadn’t gotten around to discussing yet. So now finally, join us — Pete Wright and Andy Nelson — as we enjoy another Listener’s Choice episode with one of our faves, the Jean-Pierre Jeunet & Marc Caro 1991 film “Delicatessen.” We talk with Cameron about why she chose this film and what it means to her, as well as the joy of winning the Pony Prize. We discuss the look of the movie — Jeunet and Caro each come from graphical backgrounds and, when paired with Darius Khondji’s beautiful cinematography, as well as the amazing production and costume design, created an unforgettable post-apocalyptic world. We chat about the indelible performances, starting with Dominique Pinon, a perfect choice for someone who was a former circus performer. And we talk about the nature of the story, a very upside down world with hell on earth and underground saviors. It’s a marvelous film that deserves to be talked about, so tune in! Hey! You know what would be awesome? If you would drop us a positive rating on iTunes! If you like what we’re doing here on TNR, it really is the best way to make sure that this show appears when others search for it, plus, it’s just a nice thing to do. Thanks!!
